Making Saving Money a No-Brainer for College Students

Page 2: Issuu kg sm jp eb

Keeping track of your money is new and confusing... We know you can do it!

Students often struggle with making decisions with savings due to many different factors. Most students never have to think about saving or even handling their own money until college and they become independent.

Page 3: Issuu kg sm jp eb

Saving money in college can seem impossible because...

★ You have the cost of living★ You have student loans★ Materialistic items★ Not disciplined★ You just don’t know how to save, or the most

effective and efficient ways to save★ Parents have helped so they don’t necessarily know

how to budget their money.

After talking with Bruce from my local 5/3 Bank

Bio: Bruce Ponsaran is Branch Manager at 5/3 bank on North and Dayton St. After graduating from Ithaca college in 2003, he began working in banks around the country. Now, 11 years later, Bruce has become a branch manager in the most competitive banking field in America.

Tips: When it comes to banking in college, Bruce believes that saving is very important. Most college students don’t start saving until later in life. He believes the earlier you start saving the better, even if it’s only a few dollars a month. Set aside a certain amount of money for yourself to save a month. Also create a budget on how much you want to spend. Stick to it! Bruce also keeps track of his spendings in an excel spreadsheet, which his wife monitors closely.

The Average Student Banking Experience

Page 6: Issuu kg sm jp eb

I then went straight to the source, college students, here is what I found.

We interviewed a total of 40 students ★ 85 % wanted to focus on saving ★ 65% wanted to save to pay for school related expenses

★ 100% wished saving was easier

Page 7: Issuu kg sm jp eb

Quotes

April said “It is hard trying to save money because of the expenses you have to pay for in college (i.e. tuition, food, books, etc)”.

Amanda said “It is hard saving money because I buy things I do not need”.

Page 8: Issuu kg sm jp eb

Quotes“It is hard to save money while in school because it is easy to splurge.”- Danna

“I find myself transferring more money from savings into checking instead of the other way around”- Bridget

Page 9: Issuu kg sm jp eb

After all the interviews I realized that college students have more resources than they realize

★ Bank workers are more than willing to answer any questions college students have.

★ There are mobile apps that make banking easier and more accessible.○ Save the change○ Virtual Wallet

★ There are programs that do some banking for you, like as soon as you get a paycheck it goes into your account automatically.

Page 10: Issuu kg sm jp eb

I then thought of unexpected resources we could use to make some improvements.

Improvements-● Some students still rely on

their parents for their banking.

● Some students can not find info sessions about banking and how to do certain things.

Unexpected Resources● Classroom● Projectors, powerpoints● Books● TV shows

● Youtube Clips● Buzzfeed● Student Union● Bank Fair

Page 11: Issuu kg sm jp eb

Then we quickly came across this question...

How can we make saving money a no-brainer for college students?

Page 12: Issuu kg sm jp eb

I had three main ideas on what to do

★ Have a class about it for freshman in college. (Students need to take a freshman seminar, maybe take one day out of that to talk about banking.)

★ 2 months before spring break (or other time like it) have a assembly about banking and asking if they have saved enough, then give tips on how to save.

★ Sell books back but instead of getting cash, it gets put into a savings account and the bookstore will match that by 10%, that you can’t touch for x amount of years.

Page 13: Issuu kg sm jp eb

After reviewing my 3 options, I figured out which was best.

Sell books back but instead of getting cash, it gets put into a savings account and matched by 10% by the

bank, to encourage savings, that you can’t touch for x amount of years.

Page 14: Issuu kg sm jp eb

ExplanationAll college students need to buy books for their classes. At some point, they sell back their books, and most of them would spend that extra $30 or $50 on a new pair of shoes, or a new shirt. This solution idea allows a student to save in a no-brainer way because this mobile apps does the saving for them. It eliminates all the challenge a student will have with saving.
