We had a wonderful response to our December launch – HUGE thanks to everyone for your support and helpful suggestions. We have 17 films to choose from in February and March.

OVER 2,000 tickets have been sold since December 29th. This has increased the profile of the historic Abbey Buildings which will be helpful for funding applications – see page 21 for a letter from our hosts, the Friends of Abingdon Civic Society, Trustees of the buildings.

Thank you as well for signing our petition book on your way in for our plans to provide a permanent cinema in Abingdon. We already have over 1,500 SIGNATURES and hope to reach 2,500 by the end of February. Our online petition can be found at https://survey.netframe.io

On Friday 12th January, we presented NEW PROPOSALS to the town council to use the Abbey Hall in the modern part of the Guildhall to screen films, show live acts and host community events. We offered this as a means to reopen the building immediately, generate income for the council and most importantly to bring this space back into community use.

Hello and welcome......to our new programme!

We offered this as an IMMEDIATE SOLUTION while the council takes its time to secure approval for its own plans and then implement them.

Back in 2015 we tendered plans to the town council as part of the Abingdon Guildhall and Cinema Improvement Plan and were shortlisted. Our current proposal is to install STATE OF THE ART PROJECTION AND AUDIO-VISUAL EQUIPMENT with the latest high-tech retractable screen. We will also invest in LUXURY SEATING to provide a fabulous experience. Important features of our plan are that we will also bring LIVE ACTS to the Abbey Hall and will welcome COMMUNITY GROUPS who wish to use the space. At our cinema in Evesham, U3A come free of charge for their monthly meetings, we have salsa dance classes, art exhibitions, book signings, children’s parties, “girls’ nights out”, charity fundraisers and much more.

We will CONTINUE to screen films at the Unicorn until the end of 2018 at least...

Welcome to the Unicorn Theatre, part of the

remaining buildings of the great, medieval Abbey of Abingdon. Our charity has owned and maintained these buildings for almost 75 years; our predecessors saved them from demolition and now they are a scheduled monument of national importance, grade 1 listed.

The Unicorn Theatre is the original Checker Hall; look up at the stunning, 15th century timbered roof. It was converted to a theatre in 1953 and has hosted drama, music, films and talks ever since. It is the only theatre in the town centre.

Abingdon Abbey is at the core of the town’s history and one of the reasons that the town exists. The medieval Abbey was the 6th wealthiest in England and the church of St Mary, was almost as large as Westminster Abbey. It was demolished in the Reformation under the orders of Henry VIII in 1538.

By visiting us, you are helping support the maintenance of these buildings for the local community and visitors. So, do join us, membership is available on line or forms are available here and please sign the book in the Checker which supports our ‘Enhancement Project’ aimed at securing these buildings for generations to come.

The Friends have felt for a long time that Abingdon needs a cinema, obvious for a town of almost 40,000 people. So please support our colleagues, who run the cinema, by signing their book saying that we need a permanent cinema site in the town.
