will need a fuel stop

CAPTAINS REPORT

Busselton Mid-Week Run 15/7/15

A disappointing turn up, only 5 riders turned

up, one of them from Bunbury. Darryl came

down to see us off, as he is still on the no ride

list, his Medico says it could still be a few

weeks before he is fit to ride. It was a very nice

day, clear skies, no wind, although a bit cold at

first. John again lead us off over to Kirup via

the Vass Hwy. and Cundinup Rd where we en-

joyed coffee & pies.

We then headed off to Capel via the Upper

Capel Rd and Goodwood Rd where we had an-

other coffee, then heading back to Busselton

via Stirling Rd (John was going to take us

down Mallokup Rd but he got ahead of us

when we crossed Bussell Hwy.

He said he was standing on the corner but we

didn't see him, so we were trying to catch him

up all the time he was behind us!) Ludlow Rd,

Tuart Dr and Layman Rd arriving back in

Busselton about 1PM a very nice ride.

P.W.

Midweek PM Ride 15-7-15. 12 Riders

Last ride before we leave on our cruise. I

stayed home while John P. led the group thru

Dardanup West, Crooked Brook, Dardanup and

back to Eaton where Kate C. and I had after-

noon tea waiting.

Sorry I didn't plan a longer ride especially as

the weather was fine however I hope the toast-

ed sandwiches made up for it. After quite a few

discussions the group left about 330pm. Thanks

to Kate for helping once again.

Busselton Midweek Ride 05-08-15

10 Riders

A cold clear morning greeted us with no wind.

10 bikes attended, 2 from Bunbury with one

passenger, there was 3 club eligible bikes. John

again lead us off along Bussell Hwy, L into Tu-

art Drive, L at Ludlow North Rd, R into

Mallokup Rd to Capel from Capel we headed

along Gavins Gully Rd, L into Boundary Rd R

at Lowrie Rd, R at South Western Hwy L

into Argyle Rd, (I left the ride hear to return

to Busselton for Doctors appointment at

11:15) L at Hurst Rd through to Boyanup for

morning tea.

From Boyanup the ride headed along Bo-

yanup West Rd. L at Elgin Rd R at Gavins

Gully Rd to Capel for refuelling stop, then

headed down Goodwood Rd, R at Capel Tu-

tunup Rd, R at Tutunup Rd, L into Ludlow

Hithergreen Rd, R at Princefield Rd, R at

Wonnerup South Rd, across Bussell Hwy in-

to Layman Rd to Sensation s Cafe at Port

Geographe for a light lunch, where I met up

with the group again.

Thanks to John a good ride with no mis-

shapes and to my knowledge no one got lost.

Peter Whiteside

Country Run 09-08-15. 11 Riders

The Ride started on a chilly morning from

the Entertainment Centre and meandered

along Ocean Drive, Washington Avenue,

Roberts Road, Ludlow Road North, and Tu-

art Drive.

Then onto Bussell Highway, Sues Road,

Vasse Highway, Ludlow Hithergreen Road,

Tutunup and Goodwood Roads to arrive at

the Capel Bakery for Morning Tea.

On the narrow Bridge on Tutunup Road there

was a set of Traffic Lights directing the traf-

fic to just one lane across the bridge.

When Bill Pike stopped at the lights he had

trouble restarting his newly restored Match-

less Bike.

After several attempts and realizing that the

decompression lever was jammed they final-

ly got it started again.

Bill continued on to the Capel Bakery with

the rest of the riders.

At the Capel Bakery several of the riders said

that they would not go on a run again if it

was along Tuart Drive because the road is

too narrow, bumpy and dangerous.

Bill Pike had trouble starting his bike again

after leaving the bakery; he also noticed that

several bolts had fallen out of his Bike’s seat.

Bill and Matchless travelled back to Bunbury

in the Back-up.

The Heritage day will incorporate Bikes,

will be enough interest generated so that

the Heritage Daye will not be shifted to the

Metro area due to lack of interest. Please

contact Bill Pike if you are interested in

taking a bike early, so that he can reserve

a good position for a display.

LICENSING LIAISON OFFICERS RE-

PORT

Jeff spoke about the proposed no fault

Page 6: ISSUE SEPTEMBER 2015 - Indian Harley Club (Bunbury) Inc ... · Registered by Australia Post-Print Post Approved PP631937/016 ISSUE SEPTEMBER 2015. 2 ... George HALL, Doug BRITTAIN,

6

insurance scheme, and the letter of protest

sent to the ICWA by Peter Boreham the Secre-

tary of the CMC.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that the accident

rates for historic vehicles are so low as to be

almost non-existent. We could find no evi-

dence that anybody had ever received a cata-

strophic injury in an accident in a historically

licensed vehicle in WA.

It is the view of the CMC and its member

clubs that there is no justification for a 115%

increase in third party insurance for historic

vehicles and that any increase should be lim-

ited to a maximum of 35% ($9.06) in line with

the percentage increase in fully licensed vehi-

cles. If future statistics indicate that the does

not represent the accident risk of vintage vehi-

cles, then the premium could be reconsidered

at that time.

Given the number of historic licensed vehicles

in WA, the $30 premium is only likely to rise

in the order of $150,000, which is not signifi-

cant in terms of the State’s total budget. How-

ever, for the many older enthusiasts who may

possibly rely on a pension or fixed income, the

additional insurance premium can become bur-

densome. This is exacerbated as many of the

owners of vintage vehicles often own more

than one vehicle, due in part to their dedication

to the preservation of Australia’s movable her-

itage, and it is apparent that the unjustified $30

increase will impact adversely on many of our

members.

Jeff also mentioned that if you buy a bike from

interstate you can no longer ride the bike home

on an interstate permit.

All other states except WA only require a med-

ical for licence renewal. It appears that our

state is discriminating against older drivers,

and there is no evidence that older drivers are

in more accidents and therefore there is no rea-

son for the discrimination.

As a Club we need to address the issue.

GENERAL BUSINESS

Bob welcomed new member John Feltham into

the Club.

Ron Gill is currently in the Restorative

Ward at BRH and would welcome some vis-

itors from the Club.

Ted Bailey is having trouble getting his motor-

cycle licence renewed, because of Department

bureaucracy. Ted apparently went to take his

test on a B31 motorcycle and was told he need-

ed to take his test on a modern bike. There is

no legislation to dictate what bike you ride for

a motorcycle license test. Bob suggested that

as a Club we contact John Castrilli to help out

in such cases.

Bernie McCormack has a Norton lay down

gear box for sale; the asking price is $1,000.

Murray Rudler is looking for a BSA flat top

fuel tank cap; if anyone has one or knows

where Murray can get one please contact him.

Frank Barron said there was a great day of

Racing and side cars at Wandering Moto-

cross Club on 23rd August from 9.30am to

3.00pm. Side car passengers are needed on

the day.

Murray mentioned the Burbs to the Bush Pre

48 Run on 6th September which is stopping at

Erica & Joe Zappa’s place in Boyanup for

morning tea.

Lunch at the Dardanup Tavern may need to

be changed at late notice. Contact Bolt for

more information.

Glen mentioned The Vintage Motorcycle Mo-

tocross Championships are at Jindong on 4& 6

September 2015, with club expecting around

100 entries.

Wayne said that the members wishing to go

on the Wheat Belt Run would need to ring

the hotels and book accommodation, and

then if they need to cancel for some reason it

is there responsibility to also ring and do so.

AMAL CONCENTRICS, HOW THEY

WORK AND TUNING

Summary: This is basically a reprint of a shop

poster produced by Norton Triumph in the 70's.

Several comments and part numbers have been

added. The Carburettor and part numbers:

1 Cable Adjuster (4/035)

2 Cable Adjuster Locknut (5/077)

3 Mixing Chamber Top (928/064)

4 Air Valve Guide Tube(928/103)

5 Air Valve Spring (622/129)

6 Air Valve (928/062)

7 Throttle Valve (928/060)

8 Jet Needle

9 Float Spindle (622/071)

10 Float Needle (622/197)

11 Banjo Bolt (622/078)

12 Banjo (376/097)

13 Filter Gauze (376/093)

11 Main Jet (376/100)

15 Float Chamber Body (622/055)

16 Jet Holder (622/128)

17 Float (622/069)

18 Needle Jet (622/122)

19 Float Chamber Washer (622/073)

20 Throttle Adjusting Screw (622/077)

21 Pilot Air Adjusting Screw (622/076)

22 Tickler

23 Throttle Spring (622/131)

24 Drain Plug (622/147)

Tuning:

There are four adjustments that can be made to

the concentric carburettor. The adjustments

should be made in the following sequence with

the engine at operating temperature. The bike

should be in operating setup (i.e., Exhaust sys-

tem installed, air cleaners installed, etc.).

1, Adjust the Main Jet (Throttle at three-quarters

to full open).

2, Adjust the Pilot Jet. (Throttle up to one-eighth

open)

3, Adjust Throttle Cutaway. (Throttle one-eighth

to one quarter open)

4, Adjust Throttle Needle. (Throttle one-quarter

to three-quarters open)

5, Readjust the Pilot jet.

The adjustments for each or the five steps are

described in the next section.

How The Carburettor Works:

Throttle Setting, Full Closed:

The carburettor proportions and atomizes the

correct amount of petrol with the air that is

drawn in by the engine. With the throttle slide in

this position, the engine is idling, the needle

valve is shut and the pilot jet and air adjusting

screw control the mixture.

Tuning:

With the engine set at a fast idle, the twist grip

shut off, the throttle valve down on the throttle

adjusting screw, and the ignition timing correctly

set:

(1) Screw out the throttle adjusting screw until

the engine runs slower and begins to falter.

(2) Screw pilot air adjusting screw in or out until

the engine runs regularly and faster.

Carefully repeat these two adjustments to obtain

the best slow running

Throttle Setting, one-eighth to one quarter open:

Page 10: ISSUE SEPTEMBER 2015 - Indian Harley Club (Bunbury) Inc ... · Registered by Australia Post-Print Post Approved PP631937/016 ISSUE SEPTEMBER 2015. 2 ... George HALL, Doug BRITTAIN,

10

When the throttle is opened from the idling posi-

tion, the throttle increases the amount of air in

the mixing chamber and the needle valve begins

to open, this proportionally increases the amount

of petrol.

Tuning:

In this position the air is controlled by the throt-

tle cutaway. If there is spitting from the carburet-

tor, richen the mixture by fitting a valve with

less cutaway. If there is no spitting but the en-

gine jerks under load. Then a larger cutaway is

required to cure richness.

Throttle Setting, one-quarter to three-quarters

open:

The jet needle controls the amount of petrol

through a wide range of throttle opening during

acceleration. In this position the throttle cutaway

is no longer controlling the air.

Tuning:

If acceleration is poor but improves with the par-

tial closure of the air valve, raise the needle. If it

becomes worse try the effect of lowering the

needle. Experiment to find the most effective po-

sition.

Throttle Setting, three-quarters to full open:

The throttle valve is now fully open; the petrol is

no longer controlled by the needle jet but by the

main jet. And maximum power is developed.

Tuning:

If the engine runs heavily' at full throttle the

main jet is too large. If the engine appears to

have better power when the throttle or air valve

is slightly closed, the main jet is too smell.

How The Float Chamber Works:

The level of petrol in the float chamber is at

maximum level, the float has risen and the nee-

dle is located on its seat, sopping petrol from

flowing into the chamber

When the level of petrol in the float chamber is

low, the float drops and the needle is lifted from

its seat, allowing petrol to flow into the chamber,

petrol being gravity fed from the tank.

Several articles have been published about set-

ting the float level on Concentric Carburettors

and this is a summary of the important points

from people in the know:

The actual specification, from the engineer who

designed the Concentric Barry Johnston, gives a

gas level of between .170" to .240" below the

top edge of the float bow, 170” being rich

and .240" being lean.

This level has a dramatic effect on the running

of a properly tuned motorcycle. It pays testa-

ments to the design of this carburettor that the

range of miss-adjustment it can tolerate and still

have the motorcycle run, if only poorly. It is sug-

gested that you set the float level first before do-

ing any carb adjustment.

The level can be estimated by placing the round

edge of the plastic float between .060" and .090"

below the edge of the bowl when the needle is

depressed by a slight force on one of the float's

needle tangs.

You can turn the bowl upside down to establish

this. With the float above the top of the bowl, as

described in the Norton Tech manual, the float

can contact the bottom of the body and not allow

the float needle to seat firmly.

It also makes the carb rich through the jetting

range. With the float, level with the top of the

bowl, although not as rich as when it is above

the top, it is still out of the specified range.

The brass needle seats are installed and adjusted

cold by the factory. Using a proper sized drift,

you can adjust the brass seat on a solid surface.
