61 very excited athletes participated in the A division of the LSSSA

carnival on Tuesday. Congratulations to all members of the team

– Riverside had a comfortable win with some outstanding

individual performances, some very determined and gutsy efforts

and some very slick team work.

Amongst the stand out performances of some of our students,

who are either state representatives or future state

representatives, there are several special moments. Two

students who had one event each as part of their grade relay – a

first time school rep in Grade 3 who waited for their only event

in the relay and was so excited they held the relay baton for a

good hour and Tara Baker who was so excited with her one and

only event where she ran a very determined leg and the sheer joy

of being part of the winning Grade 5 relay team. Priceless

moments! Full results in the next newsletter.

Our Athletics Captains accepting the trophy – Will Bottle,

Lachlan Brewer, Callie Griffin and Kara Kitto.

So this is one opportunity that students have to represent the

school. But there is certainly lots happening that we don’t

regularly promote that support the needs of many other students.

These include regular and ongoing programs to support children

experiencing grief, those that need support regulating their

emotions, those that need more focus on working co-operatively,

those that need help around their personal safety, those that need

support in dealing with anxiety and some that just need some

downtime from their class because family life is not great.

PHP

It’s the hidden support that we do through our senior staff,

teachers, social worker, school psychologist and Chappy that

might not be on the front page of the newsletter because we

value the confidentiality of our families but it’s still happening.

Your child might not need this support right now but one day

it may be their need. So whilst we may publically celebrate the

Athletics team, as one aspect of Riverside Primary, there is a lot

more to our school.

Grade 5/6 Camp

Next week our Grade 5’s and 6’s will be attending camp at

Gumleaves, Swansea. A special appreciation to staff and parents

who are attending.

There will be some changes in specialist times and days for the

remainder of the school.

Lost Property

There are a significant number of unnamed jumpers in lost

property.

Capital Works Update

After a consultation phase with staff, students (representatives

from Grade 4 and 5) and parents, through both the RPSA

meetings and a meeting during school time, the new 4

classroom inquiry hub will be built in the area outside the

terrapins and the current Grade 4 classrooms of 4BC and

4MW. These classrooms will be linked by an open courtyard.

The terrapins will have doors opening onto a deck linking them

to the new learning spaces.

Costings are now being undertaken. It is hoped that we will be

undertaking some additional improvements to the school but

this depends on the budget.

Calling on Donations Can you donate a gift to the stall, either purchased or

handmade?

Can you donate items that can be made into gifts? For

example; box of chocolates, coffee sachets, hankies,

socks...

Maybe you have a business and can donate items or

vouchers to our stall?

We would appreciate and welcome any donations big or

small.

COMMUNITY NEWS

The Riverside Lego Exhibition has once again drawn to a close, with more than 100 children participating this year. It was plain to

see the efforts and time put into all the models. Those that made it into the library were particularly intricate. Wonderful scenes

such as the Cops and Robbers soccer game, “Jake” the Adventure Time dog and a well-constructed tree house. In the end, only

three winners could be chosen. Congratulations to Kate Carter who won the 3-4 category, Hamish Blazely won the P-2 category

and Keelia Lambert won the 5-6 category. Each of these children received a Brixhibition medallion for their creativity. One model

from the entire school was also selected to be displayed in the official Brixibition this year. Hamish’s motorised chariot showed

amazing creativity and ingenuity, combining a motorised crane, levers and pullies. As a result Hamish will have his displayed in the

Hotel Grand Chancellor 22 and 23 April. Thank you again to all those who participated.

What is Autism?

“Autism is a life-long developmental disability that affects how a

person communicates with, and relates to, other people. It affects

how they make sense of the world around them”.

(National Autistic Society, UK).

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition that

affects an individual’s communication, socialisation and

behaviours.

The word ‘spectrum’ describes the range found in autism and the

degree in which people may be affected.

It is not known what causes an individual to have an Autism

Spectrum Disorder. There is no known cure for autism. However,

an early diagnosis and targeted intervention can assist in reducing

the impact of a child’s autism on their functioning.

Autism is not caused by parenting styles or social circumstances.

Why do we care at Riverside Primary School?

Research suggests around one

in 100 Australians are on the

autism spectrum. It is diagnosed

more in boys than girls. Riverside

Primary School currently has a

number of students diagnosed with

an Autism Spectrum Disorder

(ASD)

As a school we aim first and

foremost to understand;

we support and we include

students with ASD.

Our Science challenge was to design and create a working water wheel.

We tested our waterwheels to see how they worked. Then we redesigned them to make them even better!

We had to choose materials to make the wheel, the axle, the water scoops as well as the fixing agents.

Decisions, decisions!!
