BEFORE

AFTERModernise & add value to your homeCeilink will turn your hot and uncomfortable verandah into a moden outdoor living area that you can use all year round. Ceilink panels instantly insulate, and are designed to fit under any verandah, pergola, awning, patio, sunroom, garage or shed.

From back verandah to comfortableoutdoor living

At last an easy to install, ready to use insulated ceiling that will help you survive the extreme heat and humidity of the Australian summer; with the added bonus that it will also keep the chill away in winter.

The Ceilink insulated polystyrene centre re-duces radiant heat transfer by more than 90% and achieves an R2.75 thermal performance, making it ideal for outdoor living areas such as verandahs, pergolas, sunrooms and sheds. When used in enclosed areas, the insulation properties help negate the need for air conditioning in sum-mer and heating in winter, appealing to home owners concerned by increasing energy costs, with a bonus attraction of a dramatic reduction in mould and condensation.

The Ceilink 900mm wide panels are light-weight, manageable and prefinished with a white steel ceiling face. Compared to traditional retrofit ceiling installations, lead time is dramatically reduced, installation is a breeze and there is no need for painting or any of the mess — making it an ideal DIY ceiling solution.

As Australians continue to embrace the use of outdoor entertaining areas, Ceilink is an almost instant outdoor living insulation solution and with some of the comments from its customers, it’s on its way to becoming an Australian require-ment.

“With the entire family around for Christmas Day, sitting under our pergola was unbearable due to the extreme heat that radiated through our steel roof; it was like sitting in a sauna. The Ceilink pan-els have provided us with both the alfresco look and the comfort level we craved. We no longer feel like we are sitting in a microwave whilst entertaining guests. We are truly amazed at how good it works. It was completed in less than a day as due to the pre-finished surface there was no messy painting required.”

7 REASONS WHY...you should invest in ducted reverse cycle air conditioning as an ideal solution for year-round indoor comfort...

1. A variable capacity system. For example, a digital scroll system can operate from 100% capacity (giving faster cooling) and down to 10% to save energy while maintaining your desired temperature.

2. A vertical discharge style outdoor unit. The advantage is that it discharges its hot air up and away from the unit where it dissipates easily. If a traditional horizontal discharge unit is installed too close to a boundary fence, the expelled air can create a hot spot which could make the air conditioner trip out, work less effectively and cost more to run.

3. Look for a brand with a guaranteed operating range of 50oC. This assures good, economical performance even on very hot days.

4. Choose zoning, because the more zones, the more flexibility you have to save running costs.

5. Look for a product with energy-smart technology which can save money in the long term. For instance, energy modelling indicates ActronAir ESP Plus ducted air conditioning can save up to 60% on running costs, versus fixed speed models.* As well, you can turn down ESP Plus to just one zone when you wish.

6. For the ultimate in comfort, choose ActronAir ESP Ultima which allows different temperatures to be set in up to eight different zones of the home.

7. Choose a ducted system that is built in Australia, designed to handle our harsh conditions. ActronAir units are designed to operate at temperatures from -10oC to 50oC.

Turning off a light when it’s no longer required is a standard way of conserving energy and keep-ing power bills contained. But leaving an air con-ditioner on in an unused room for just one hour can sometimes equate to leaving 10 light bulbs on for the same period. So there goes your sav-ings! ESP Plus and ESP Ultima, by Australian air conditioning company ActronAir, offer an Energy Smart Zoning feature in their ducted systems. This zoning feature allows areas or rooms to be turned off when not in use, saving on running costs. Their Energy Smart Zoning intuitively matches the right amount of airflow according to how many zones are on, even down to just one room. ESP Ultima also allows different tempera-tures to be set in different zones of the house. For instance, a sleeping child can have the room a little warmer; while the kitchen can be set at a cooler temperature. Up to eight temperature zones can be created with ESP Ultima.

Finishing-off landscapingPaving a driveway, garden path or courtyard can be tackled in an afternoon with Sika’s ready to use

landscaping products. For a professional and lasting finish, Sika® Pave Fix Plus [from $70] is a self-setting jointing compound for pointing gaps of 5mm or more between pavers. Easily brushed into place with a broom, the product will not wash or blow out and is also shower resistant during curing. Ideal for reviving tired patios or finishing off a freshly laid surface, Sika Pave Fix Plus can cover an area of around 12.5 square metres per pack and has a sand-like consistency that easily nestles into joints.

Requiring no activation (added moisture) to cure, the finished paving can be used immediately after brushing the product into joints. Minimising down time, patio furniture, plants and the barbecue can be quickly placed back into position. Available in grey or buff to blend with contemporary pavers, it prevents weed growth and insect attack to keep the outside of the home looking polished for entertaining. For narrower gaps, Sika® Block Paving Fix [from $65] can be applied to narrow joints of 2-4mm. This moisture curing compound sets hard, with the paved surface ready to be used immediately once the product has been activated with a light mist of water. Sika landscaping products are available from Bunnings in the Building Supplies Department, plus from other hardware stores.

Encaustic tilesOriginally crafted by monastic potters of the Cistercian Order

around the 12th century, they were then known as inlaid tiles. Popu-lar from the 13th through to the 16th centuries, interest was later renewed in the Gothic Revival of the 19th century. But since the Vic-torian era, the rise of the term encaustic tile has overshadowed the previous term of inlaid tiles. Traditionally these tiles were made for use in cathedrals and churches, and today these same stone tiles lay, after centuries of use, still presenting their definitive designs with grandeur.

Today the tradition lives on in both technique and craftsmanship. Where traditionally a design is applied to a tile almost as a secondary process, the encaustic tile undergoes a very different journey in its creation. In the first stage the intricate design is established by the exacting hands of a craftsman pouring a mineral pigment into a metal mould be-fore the cement base of the tile is added. After that, each tile is pressed under a 10-tonne weight to permanently bond the mineral pigment to the cement biscuit. Allowing for the colour to then be absorbed 2-3mm into the base tile, the impregnated design is then left to cure for two days. This results in a naturally matte, colourfast finish.

Borders, feature tiles and solid colours can be arranged in many different patterns, and formulations can be made to create a decorative and lasting impression both indoors and out. Historically proven as most durable, these tiles can be easily cleaned with a simple soap solution. They can be left in their raw matte finish, or treated and sealed with a stone- or slate-sealer prior to laying to provide a gloss effect. Schots Home Emporium (Mel-bourne) has recently added such a range of encaustic tiles to their large collection of tiles. Solids start at $3.95/tile, with features from $2.80/tile.

Energy efficient ovensILVE’s top of the range professional oven series, Quadra, has a

variety of functions designed to save on energy such as: high-out-put burners; an 8-minute pre-heat function; and a warming drawer that does not have extra heating elements built-in but instead utilises heat generated from the oven to keep food or plates warm. Moreover, they have fan-forced ovens and high-density reflective insulation that distributes the heat evenly within the oven, leading to an even temperature and a reduction in overall energy consump-tion. The Quadra Professional Oven series is available in stainless steel, gloss black or bright white finishes.

Hidden rangehoodItalian brand Smeg has introduced a high

powered rangehood specifically designed for those of us who love to stir-fry, sear, boil pasta or cook on a griddle or teppan-yaki plate. The SHC965X [$2390] is a high powered, concealed undermount rangehood that will remove large quantities of smoke, fumes and grease-laden air from the kitchen making the space more comfortable to work in. It is designed to be installed within a wall-mounted cabinet so it is completely concealed from view. Yet it will quietly and efficiently remove up to 1600m3/hour at a minimal noise level – between 55 and 75dBA depending on the speed. It offers two 250W centrifugal motors with three speeds, three metal baffle filters (that can be washed in the dishwasher) and optional charcoal filters. It is 965mm wide and can either be ducted to the atmosphere [recommended by the manufacturer] or recirculated. For shadow-free cooking there are three 50W halogen globes.

Bushland vistaA garage door and entry to a home

located on Sydney Harbour were given a huge makeover thanks to the talents of Peter Campbell of Campbell Barnett, Graham Day Garage Doors and Axolotl. The clients wanted to capitalise on their stunning harbour views, as well as deviate from the traditional idea of a garage. In response, Peter devised a contemporary and multi-layered bushland image taken from trees on the property. The concept was enabled by the availability of Axo-lotl’s special processes and materials.

First, the panels were precision cut to the design that allowed maximum visibility through, whilst concealing the customised frame. They were then applied with several layers of Axolotl Bronze in smooth, light and cast textures, to illustrate the layers of the contemporary bushland graphic. As possible as it was, it wouldn’t be true to say it was a simple project as it spanned over a year and involved in depth design discussions and meticulous planning. The efforts of the team did not go unrewarded however, as the result is an awe inspiring, captivating entry for a stunning home.

Energy ratings for windows

When you talk about the energy efficiency of windows, it is not just the glass but the whole window system, which includes the frame, glass, seals and spacers. All com-ponents contribute to the energy-use in your home.

Tested window products receive a rating called the U-value. A lower number indicates more energy efficiency. The U-value can be as high as 7.5 in some windows and doors and as low as 0.8 for very energy efficient products (such as Paarhammer’s best rating).

The testing of energy efficiency must be performed by a rating organisation which is accredited by the AFRC - Australian Fenestra-tion Rating Council. This ensures the testing is consistent for all products and follows the Building Code of Australia. These ratings are published by WERS (Window Energy Rating Scheme), which is independent of any manufacturer and is managed by the AWA (Australian Window Association). You can get more info on www.wers.net

Comfort, amenity and resale value are improved by using high-performance windows. Not unlike buying a fridge, washing ma-chine or other appliance for their star rating, the window industry has progressed to offering consumer goods viewed as performance appliances for energy, noise and security.

Solar powered roller blinds

Dynaveil have developed a range of roller blinds powered by natural daylight, repre-senting a viable alternative to not only ex-isting motorized blinds but also traditional manually operated blinds. With no electric power supply needed, these solar powered blinds provide cost savings by eliminating the need for hardwiring and electrical work. This is especially ideal for retrofit ap-plications during renovations, where minimal impact on surroundings is often a primary concern. With local fabrication facilities Dynaveil can supply your preferred fabric with standard sizes ranging from a 300mm wide single or dual cassette, to systems over 3m wide. Working in most conditions with reasonable access to daylight, Dynaveil systems do not require direct sunlight to work effectively.

There are sometimes reports of tragic accidents where children are seriously harmed by the looped chains or cords from window coverings. The clever SmarTUG™ mechanism is designed to com-pletely eradicate such dangers whilst offering extra convenience for operation of blinds. The SmarTUG™ mechanism is a simple single chain that can be lightly tugged to open or close the blind or stop it in any position. As a fool-proof child-safe solution, the system is also highly suited for schools, hospitals, hotels, child care facilities, etc.

visit www.autoslide.com

The Autoslide Au-tomatic Pet Door Kit ($399+p/h) includes two wireless push buttons for human-use plus pet mats. Once Autoslide is fitted to your existing sliding door, it can be opened automatically either via the wireless push buttons or via the built-in pull-assist. Doors will automatically close after the adjustable time delay. To activate the automatic pet door function, you first position the pet mats and then set the pet-opening-width to suit the size of your pet. It’s a simple two-step-process.

There are two modes with these kits: Automatic mode; and Pet mode. In Pet mode, the door will automatically open for you and your pet. But when it’s time to stop your pets from going in-and-out, you switch back to Automatic mode to temporarily disable the pet mats [eg at night time]. With the pet door kits, one wire-less battery operated pet mat is placed on the inside of the house under a regular door mat to let your pet out; while the other wire-less mat is placed outside for your pet to come back in.

As an alternative, the pet sensors are mounted on your door frame and activates whenever your pet walks towards it. The Autoslide pet mode allows the door to open just enough for your pet to use it, thus reducing loss of heating or cooling.

Professional-quality ovenThe final element in Smeg’s collection of new generation, high

performance ovens is their Classic design 90cm pyrolytic built-in oven [model SAP3900X, $4990]. Innovations include the Thin Film Transistor display with its clear graphics; S-Logic interface that provides intuitive, simple control of multiple functions; and Smart Sense self-guiding cooking programmes. Smart Sense allows you to access 50 pre-set recipes for meat, fish and vegetable dishes that will advise the optimum temperature, shelf height and duration for the best results. All of these recipes have been written for Austral-ian produce and Australian culinary preferences. And you can add 10 of your own recipes to the oven’s memory. Special functions within the cooking programmes include proving mode (for baking breads etc), slow cooking, Eco energy-saving fan-forced mode plus nine other baking functions such as fan assisted, supercook, fan grill and baker’s function.

Cleaning the 90-litre capacity oven is made easy via pyrolytic cleaning with a three hour cycle for heavily soiled oven interiors or an eco-energy-saving pyrolytic option that takes 90 minutes for lightly soiled ovens. Other features include: Thermoseal technology whereby the interior of the oven is perfectly controlled; a quadru-ple glazed door to ensure its exterior is cool to the touch no matter how high the internal temperature; and it is finished in fingerprint-resistant satin stainless steel.

Matching white goods Haier has recently

released three new appli-ances: a Frost-Free 256-litre upright freezer [model HVF-260, $959 in white, or$1049 in satina]; a 575-li-tre capacity white side-by-side refrigerator [model HSBS582AW, $1,099]; and a compact 36-bottle wine-chiller [model JC110GD in aluminium & glass, $599]. The dimensions of the freezer are 1655mm high x 595mm wide x 685mm deep, ideal for compact kitchens. And at only 980mm high the wine-chiller is also ideal for tight spaces.

A glass door, interior light and anti-condensation technology keeps it perfect for easy viewing. A ventila-tion control works with an interior fan to ensure even air circulation, while the adjustable tempera-ture control allows you to change the temperature to suit whatever you are storing.

New gas burner technologyScholtès has renewed the heat diffusion

on its gas hobs with its Planar technology to make it more efficient. This state-of-the-art flat gas burner, with a vertical flame output for uniform heat distribution, achieves boiling point on average 20% faster than some older technology burners [according to the manu-facturer]. The Planar technology burner has a 3kW power due to the vertical flame but when compared to an older tech 3kW burner consumes 30% less gas. It is made of enamelled steel in one piece and is easy to clean, even in the dishwasher. The new Planar technology hobs [in a choice of stainless steel or black glass finish] are equipped with cast iron pan supports for strength, and the front controls offer ergonomics and safety.

6-star dishwasherSmeg has released a new range of 6-star WELS rated dishwashers capable of washing and rinsing a full load

in less than 10-litres of water. All the six star dishwashers use just 9.8L of water for a full 15 place setting for the Normal Eco Wash Programme. There are numerous efficiency features that place this range at the pin-nacle of dishwasher innovation, such as: quick time programmes; aquatest wash technology; enersave energy efficiencies; and many convenience factors. The Normal Eco wash programme uses just 9.8 litres of water to wash a 15-place setting – a cold pre-wash, full wash at 49°C, a rinse at 41°C followed by condenser drying.

A standout feature of these new dishwashers is the Flexi Duo Basket – a clever design that enables the top cutlery basket to split in two for one to slide under the other to allow extra height for long-stemmed glasses. Another smart feature is the 24-hour delay enabling you to take advantage of off-peak power rates; and there are five wash programmes – soak, normal ECO, ECO, intensive 65°C wash and Ultraclean (for those washes that are heavily soiled and require a higher level of sterilisation). All Smeg dishwashers utilise their Orbital wash technology that features two spray arms operating in opposite directions to ensure water is evenly dis-tributed. There are six models including freestanding, semi- and full-integrated and underbench priced from $1590 through to $1990.

Chalk PaintChalk Paint™ is a development by Annie Sloan

[England]. It is not simply paint with chalk added to it. It is not chalkboard paint. It is not made by adding plaster of Paris or grout or even bak-ing soda to an existing paint. Chalk Paint™ is the unique decorative paint Annie Sloan developed for furniture, floors and walls, drawing on a life-time of research and experience in working with paint and colour. It adheres to most surfaces and creates gorgeous results quickly and easily. You can use it for a textured finish, a distressed fin-ish, a smooth contemporary finish or even as a wash. Chalk Paint™ is a non-toxic, water-based paint that is lead-free, EG-free, odour-free and has no volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Annie Sloan has chosen her palette of col-ours carefully. They range from soft, pale hues to bright, vivid tones reminiscent of historic European décor as well as strong 20th century colours. They are rich and strong so they may be lightened, mixed together, dulled with dark wax or used as washes without losing their intensity and depth. You can add interesting patinas to your surfaces with Annie Sloan Soft Wax - avail-able in Clear and Dark. Chalk Paint™ decorative paint by Annie Sloan is available through a net-work of independent shops, trained in the Annie Sloan method. Each offers workshops and prac-tical advice on colour and techniques.

Aussie paints for the trade

Haymes’ latest innovation Elite Professional paint is a comprehen-sive range of advanced exterior and interior finishes for profes-sional painters. Incorporating all aspects of a renovation or new paint job, Elite Professional deliv-ers on durability, longevity and high quality. The range comprises six new products: Interior; Ceiling; Trim; Exterior; and Prepcoat, which incorporates both an Acrylic Sealer Undercoat and a Tricoat Primer Sealer Undercoat [PSU].

Interior produces no fumes or odours; is easy-to-clean, scrub-bable and stain-resistant; is 100% acrylic; and 99%VOC-free. Ceil-ing has excellent hiding power; is tintable; and its super flat/high opacity minimises light-reflection and surface-imperfections. Trim, oil-based enamel, is hard-wearing; mark-resistant; and offers excel-lent levelling. Exterior has excellent UV-resistance; is self-priming; and intended for use on decking, cladding, weatherboards, outdoor furniture, doors and window frames, fences, walkways, pergolas, screens and external timber. This 100% acrylic has a 12-year guar-antee against blistering, peeling and flaking.

Prepcoat Acrylic Sealer Undercoat has excellent filling properties and is easy to sand. Meanwhile, Tricoat [primer, sealer, undercoat] has superb coverage and adhesion; is also easy to sand; and can be used on masonry, timber, galvanised iron, Zincalume®, alumini-um, plasterboard, MDF, plus previously painted items.

All-purpose paint sprayer

Powerful, ef-ficient and ver-satile, Wagner’s FLEXiO 585 can spray any paint undiluted. It is suitable for almost any DIY-project – from interior walls and ceilings, doors, window frames and indoor furniture, to wooden fences, garden furniture and sheds. Projects can be primed, lacquered, varnished, oiled, sealed, preserved or simply given a new colour with this new sprayer. The powerful X-BOOST™ turbine means that conventional coatings can be applied without being diluted.

The volume of paint can also be adjusted to suit the material being sprayed and the project type. With a working speed of 3m2/min you can spray a standard room in around 12-min-utes. You can also spray thick exterior acrylics onto coarser surfaces. Instead of applying two coats of paint with a brush or roller, you can spray the same amount of paint in less than half the time. In addition to the i-SPRAY at-tachment, the FLEXiO 585 also comes with a PerfectSpray attachment for spraying lacquer, varnish, stain and other thinner materials. Achieve a perfect, smooth finish every time. Available from Bunnings Warehouse and paint specialists.

Wash and DryBosch has expanded its laundry care

range with the recent launch of its premi-um-quality HomeProfessional 8kg washing machine [WAY32540AU, $2349] and 7kg heat pump dryer [WTY88700AU, $2549]. The washing machine offers a 5-star WELS rating, using 58l/wash, and 4-star energy rating; while the dryer with an innova-tive self-cleaning condenser is 33% more efficient. The washer has a 13cm LED display panel with touch buttons and a high-resolution text display, as well as an illuminated knob selector. The washer features VarioPerfect technology whenever you want to save time (SpeedPerfect) or energy (EcoPerfect); while an Auto Power Off mode enables it to switch-off after 15, 30 or 60 minutes. Utilising a brushless DC motor, it is quieter, faster and more energy efficient than previous Bosch washing machines.

The matching heat pump dryer comes with innovative ActiveAir technology, which operates without conventional heat-ing methods. Drying air is warmed with the help of the heat pump to ensure all heat is efficiently re-used throughout the cycle, making it one of the most energy efficient dryers. Similar to the washer, the dryer has VarioPerfect for speed or energy efficiency. With 7kg capacity, the washing is supported by the sculptured drum surface while being cradled with warm air from the SoftFlow paddles. The new AntiVibration design increases stability of the housing and reduces vibrations for a quieter operation.

Matching laundry appliances

Fisher & Paykel’s WashSmart™ and QuickSmart™ top-loading washing machines have been tipped on their sides to create re-engineered WashSmart™ [$1019 - $1189] and QuickSmart™ [$919 - $1079] front loader versions. These new front loaders of-fer an impressive 4 Star Energy Rating and 4.5 Star WELS Rating. Water usage for each model is: WH8560P1 73 litres per wash; WH7560P1 64 litres per wash; WH8560J1 73 litres per wash; and-WH7560J1 64 litres per wash. Its Vortex Wash acts mid-cycle to ensure your clothes get the best wash possible in the shortest amount of time (the Super Quick cycle in WashSmart™ takes just 15 minutes from start to finish; while 9 of the 13 wash pro-grammes take less than an hour to complete). The WashSmart™ and its AeroXL™ 8kg Condenser Dryer partner [$879] can sit side by side, or the dryer can be fitted above the washer with an optional stack-ing kit. Stacking the two appliances is perfect for laundries that are short on space. The condensing dryer requires no venting, so it’s ideal for installations where venting is difficult.

cialist, Smeg, has re-entered the laundry market with a new genera-tion of front loaders that delivers high energy and water efficiency, sophisticated wash programmes and low-noise operation. The new models offer the choice of 8kg and 7.5kg capacity along with 20 wash programmes, with a mix of cycles suitable for heavily soiled, wool-lens, denim, cotton, delicates and synthetics. DIY pavingBoral Masonry has developed

segmental paving for home-renovators to add a DIY-touch to gardens and outdoor areas. Seg-mental paving is a cost-effective, simple option for a DIY project; and there is a range of sizes, finishes and colours to suit dif-ferent landscaping styles. Unlike concrete paving, which is poured in one batch and can require specialised equipment and labour, segmental pavers can be laid one-by-one, providing flexibility for design changes along the way.

Pavers can be mixed and matched in patterns that make the most of the space. For example: combine different coloured pavers to create an entertaining area; or interweave pavers with grass for a stepping stone path. Segmental pavers are also cost-effective. They do not have to be laid by contract-ed installers. Provided the correct laying techniques are followed, the end result can look profes-sional. You can download a copy of Boral’s Guide to Laying Pavers from the website, or pick a copy up from paving suppliers.

The best timber deck nish is always achieved using a quality bristle brush.

Chemical Developments Pty. Ltd. (Port Stephens, NSW) in 1996 developed a build-ing material that looks, feels and wears exactly like natural stone, yet comes in liquid form, right from a can.

Megatreat Liquid Stone is a revolution-ary high-quality building material that has all the qualities of natural stone because it’s made with natural stone. Megatreat is a flexible material that will not crack, is super economical, easy to use on any type of horizontal or vertical surface, and can be tinted or textured to a wide range of finishes.

The high-grade natural sandstone, terracotta and limestone have a unique combination of stone aggregates and an acrylic-based crosslink polymer. It has been designed for both interior and exterior applications, for vertical and horizontal surfaces, in residential as well as commercial properties.

Cover that surface to give a cement rendered look.

Right from the can, with no mixing or measuring, Megatreat can be spread, brushed, bagged, trowelled or sprayed onto almost any surface. For example; peb-blecrete, concrete, slate, tiles, brick, wood, plastic, steel, wrought iron, glass, asphalt, fibro, blue board, hardiflex and laminates. For example: walkways, wall, roofs, floors, bench tops, pots, pool surrounds, patios, driveways, ceramics, even styro-foam planters.

These products can be coloured using a non-organic pigment or paint tint from your local paint store. These should be stirred in slowly to achieve the best effect. After application, simple finishing tech-niques can be used to create a wide range of natural stone and masonry results. It can be used in place of wallpaper, paint or panelling. Megatreat can be applied to achieve an effect that looks and feels like real stone.

There are four types of Megatreat Liquid Stone products:-

Liquid Sandstone: 3 natural colours - Natural, Sydney White and Desert Gold. Also the stock Tinted Charcoal Grey

Liquid Terracotta: Real TerracottaLiquid Limestone:White and stock

tinted Concrete GreyTextured Primer Coat: White and Tint-

able (filler for pebblecrete, rough surfaces and/or joint colour.

Megatreat Natural, Satin or Gloss Sealers, are applied once the Liquid Stone is dry (around 24 hours after application). These tried and proven range of sealers are easily applied, wash up in water and have no of-fensive smells. A slip resistant additive can be mixed in to the Satin and Gloss sealers for pool surrounds, shop floors and bath-rooms. The long lasting sealers give up to 5 years protection.

All of these products have been thor-oughly tested by C.S.I.R.O. in Australia and Marshall Laboratories in the U.S.A. They passed all tests for flexibility, strength, fire resistance, ultra-violet light, crack resistant and mould resistant. These products are environmentally friendly, and wash up in water. Because of its advanced polymer base Megatreat products can flex with vari-ations of temperature and moisture.

Features and Benefits Summary:

• Looks, feels and wears like natural stone

• Lower cost than traditional natural stone and masonry products

• Easy to use straight from the can, fast and easy to apply

• Works on virtually any surface, vertical or horizontal, inside and outside

In 1986 our now, ex tiler Director Stephen Rapaport was the first to invent a solution to fix that “Leaking Shower Recess” with-out the need to remove tiles. The Hitec Shower product was commer-cialised in 1990 and has been available in some tile stores since then.

The Hitec Shower Pack comes complete with Copyright instructions to seal that leaking shower yourself. You also have access to the inventor and manufacturer of the Hitec Product for technical or trade re-lated training and sales. The Hitec Shower Pack retails for around $50 but if it is una-vailable in your area it can be purchased direct from the manufacturer for $49.95 inc P&H. The product is also available from Masters Home Improvements and selected tile stores.

Flooring suggestionsFlooring is the foundation of

any interior on which to build and enhance a specific look. By starting with colour and texture of the floor, the flavour and ambiance of a room can be established. White flooring is a bold and dramatic choice. With white floors, a room oozes spaciousness and is beckoning for soft furnishings and wall hangings in dramatic colours. A white floor will also allow the colour palette to dance in a room, especially fuchsias and exotic greens – guaranteeing to create a pic-ture of summer freshness.

The array of timber flooring hues, especially in beiges, light oak, classic neutrals and pale yellow tones is as inviting as a secluded beach in summer. Timber flooring adds much aesthetic appeal and elegance. Perfect for any living or kitchen areas, the room can come alive with lashings of blues and whites in the curtains, cush-ions and rugs to complement the timber flooring.

Darker flooring found in a plethora of laminates and natural tim-bers can also emulate summer by adding an array of neutral tones in furniture. This will offset the darkness of the flooring, creating an inviting and warm presence, like an impressive sunset.

Quick-Step is an international brand in timber, bamboo and laminate flooring, active in more than 100 countries, and has been in Australia since 1995.

Sandstone building blocks

Cleverly produced by exposing the face of blended sands, GB Elegance Masonry Blocks, from Austral Masonry, offer the finish of natural sandstone with the design flexibility of masonry blocks. Utilising high quality raw materials the fine surface fin-ish creates a distinctive, natural look that complements both traditional and contem-porary architectural style. The blocks have been honed back to create a smooth finish to give them a subtle sheen. This premium product combines the colour and character of natural sandstone with the consistency, strength and durability demanded in mod-ern construction. Available in three colour blends, Brisbane, Sydney and Endeavour, the GB Elegance range can easily blend and highlight with other building materials. They come in two versions, 200mm and 100mm series, as well as four choices of capping tiles for intricate finishes.

Save money on tiling jobs

A new Australian product is helping DIY-renovators with their tiling projects, as well as professional tilers do a better job. MitreWiz attaches to a grinder to create perfectly-cut 45o mitred-edges on tiles in a few seconds. It’s easier than using a wet-saw; and there’s virtually no risk of chip-ping the tiles. Selling for less than $20 at Bunnings, it saves on time and money as you don’t need to use a wet-saw for angled edges or attach trims to finish the corners on tiling jobs. The tool cuts at a precise 45o angle and when the corner tiles are grouted together it forms the perfect 90-degree edge for clean and modern lines for all indoor and outdoor tiling.

Safety & style from Amsterdam

Trading Downunder has released their first product from the Puma Safety Metro line, expanding their Puma Safety foot-wear range. The Puma Metro shoe 642717 Amsterdam is stylish, highly flexible and breathable. It has a TPU torsion control ele-ment built into the waist of the sole to pro-vide greater support and stability; features BreathActive functional lining for rapid absorption and release of moisture; and has a pierce-resistant midsole as a safeguard against sharp objects. The drawn up scuff cap in the toe area avoids leather abrasion; while an aluminium toe cap with 200 joules impact protection is used to reduce weight.

Decorative switchesA new range of decorative switches is available from Memory

Lane in Ascot Vale, Melbourne. The switches are ideal for fitting into high end glass kitchen splashbacks. Each switch has an acrylic surround in a bright red, a black, a grey or a white and these can be matched with either a white or grey inner mechanism to offer many choices. The mechanisms for the switches are all good qual-ity HPM brand and the options range from 1 gang switches up to 6 gang as well as double powerpoints.

To go with the new switches is a new push button 450VA dim-ming mechanism. The push button dimmer does not require an extra on/off switch, the first push turns on the light and then hold-ing down the button will dim the lights. As with the switches the push button dimmers come in the grey or white finish.

These new switches are proving popular in modern style kitch-ens as well as an eclectic decorating feature in large family rooms where decorators are mixing them with modern artworks.

Innovative tap systemMany people put up with dripping/leak-

ing taps. It can develop into mould and mildew, and can possibly rot the structure of your home. But there is an innovative solution to fixing leaks and preventing the problems caused by leaks. The Reno Trans-former from Quoss is a patented single mixer system that can be effortlessly, and cost-effectively, retro-fitted in just a few minutes to upgrade your bathroom, kitchen and laundry plumbing systems without breaking walls and tiles or other construc-tion hassles.

It provides a permanent fix even for damaged in-wall recessed pipes, and is maintenance-free, as you don’t have to replace spindle washers in the future. It enables you to convert a two-handled shower into a single flick-mixer in as little as 10-minutes. It has an in-built flexible shower-hose for washing the kids, and you can shower with one turn of the mixer at a preset temperature with the thermo-range, thus avoiding the start-up shock (or waste) from cold water first filling the shower.

If you have a 3-hole vanity- or kitchen-tap there is a version that transforms all of that into a single-mixer, with their innova-tive connection fitting through the small middle-hole. It’s ideal for replacing dam-aged bathtub and vanity taps also spoiled with rust stains. It can provide an instant upgrade to a bathroom at a small cost, especially relevant at the time of selling a property. And if renting-out a property it can free you from future plumbing problems related to leaking showers and taps. And if renting, you can install one of these transformers and revert back to the old plumbing, taking the transformer with you, whenever you move on. It is a drill-free and interchangeable system. It’s available from plumbing outlets (Reece, Tradelink, etc) and hardware stores (Bunnings, Mitre 10, etc).

Interior designer Darren Palmer has collaborated with Carpet Court to create Provincial Lane by Darren Palmer, an affordable designer flooring range, available from Carpet Court. The range includes: hard wearing laminate, a European vinyl plank, and bam-boo hard flooring; as well as 100% wool carpet range from Cava-lier Bremworth, and the latest generation solution dyed nylon. Pro-vincial Lane showcases stormy greys and earthy tones that anchor the design elements of an interior space to offer a sense of calm and stillness. In contrast, the dramatic hard flooring ranges create a bold signature look with dark bamboos and dreamy oaks. The Provincial Lane hard flooring range sparks the imagination with a striking palette of timber tones. Taking the traditional woodgrain look to the next level, Casablanca Oak, Blackbutt, Summer Oak and Spotted Gum add luxury and sophistication to any interior, while the deep, rich hues of Bamboo add exotic elegance to any home. Meanwhile, The Provincial Lane carpet range offers two distinct fibre options: a luxurious 100% wool range from Cavalier Bremworth; and a stylish solution dyed nylon, featuring the latest generation fibre designed for durability and busy households.

Doors on doorsEarly-2013 a pair of home-renovators

approached Axolotl to help create an entry for their home, a small terrace in Sydney’s inner west. One of them had captured an aerial shot of their home and surrounding suburbs in a helicopter, with the idea of recreating the image using Axolotl’s special processes. Axolotl then carved the image onto the door, replicating the fine detail of the houses, cars and trees in the photo. Finally the door and panel were coated in aged-aluminium. The overall effect is that the door was carved from a solid alumin-ium block. What was realised is a unique and personal design that celebrates the owners’ love of their home and family from the outside in.

Perfect solution for pond cleaning

This is the time of the year when you like to give your garden pond a good old drain and clean. Well here is the ideal pond drainer. PUMPS-A-LOT is a submersible pump, which uses no motor power yet drains an amazing 600 litres of water in 10 minutes effortlessly. And it’s just a fraction of the cost of motor driven pumps. The device drains down to a level of just 5mm, so there’s no tedious bucket-ing required at the end. It also acts as a vacuum cleaner and will suck up small leaves and other small debris from the bottom of the pond through the generous 3cm diameter opening.

To operate simply click your garden hose onto the pump inlet at one end and push your pool hose onto the other end. Sub-merge the pump and turn on the garden tap. Your mains pres-sure will suck up water at the rate of 6 litres for every 1 litre of water from your tap. Because there’s no electricity involved, it’s so much safer to use. The drained water can be directed onto your garden or stored for later watering.

Patented PUMPS-A-LOT is made of high impact ABS plastic and is ideal for draining ponds, spas, pools, aquariums, boats, building sites, flooded premises or any place where water is lay-ing. It sells for about $29.95.

Laying down pavers for a path, enter-tainment area, or driveway can transform your home. Before you begin make sure you have all the right materials and enough pavers to compensate for cutting around edges and obstacles. As well as the pavers, you will need road base, bedding sand, and jointing sand.

The right tools can make for a more efficient and stress-free worksite. Kennards Hire can provide you with everything you need to get the job done right with a wide range of tools from shovels, levels, and string line, through to plate compactors, brick saws, and block splitters.

When prepping the area to be paved, mark it out clearly with pegs and stringline, making sure it is level and free of all veg-etation. Remember to accommodate for the road base as well as the bedding sand and pavers.

The area should be kept level but keep drainage in mind. Aim for a 20mm slope on the finished pavers to help with this. If necessary, install drainage to carry water away from the paved area and away from the house.

Lay the road base over the whole area first, maintaining a 50mm thickness under paths and 100mm or more under drive-ways. For best results it is recommended

you use a plate compactor, which ensures a thorough compaction and a strong founda-tion for the remaining layers.

Spread the bedding sand over the area and screed to an even surface, 50mm in thickness with a straight edge. On larger areas, break it down to smaller, more eas-ily managed areas and smooth the next section after you’ve laid the pavers on the previous section. Keep in mind to regularly check the area with a builder’s level to en-sure the drainage slope is maintained.

Install the edge restraints, being mindful to use durable materials such as timber, concrete strips, or pavers set in mortar, and ensure they match the intended height of the rest of the paving when finished.

Choose your paving pattern and start laying the pavers from the corner. Lay the full-sized pavers first and then cut the smaller pavers to fill the gaps at edges and around obstacles such as posts. Pavers can be cut easily on a brick saw fitted with a diamond blade or alternatively on a block splitter. Lay the pavers in a strip, a metre or so wide, and work your way across the area. When you’ve reached the end at the other side, repeat the process until the whole area is finished.

Push each paver firmly into the sand and use a rubber mallet to tap down any

that protrude. Make sure the pavers are not touching and are left with a 2-4mm gap to be later filled with sand.

After the pavers are laid, compact them into the bedding sand with a plate compac-tor. To prevent the pavers from being dam-aged attach an old piece of carpet to the compactor.

To finish the job, spread the jointing sand into the gaps between the pavers.

To hire plate compactors, block splitters, brick saws or any other equipment you need for your paving job visit your local Kennards Hire centre. Kennards has a vast array of equipment to suit any job and experts in every field to offer guidance for the task at hand.

No flue fireplaceAchieving understated

elegance inside this beach-front apartment in New-castle was the prime objec-tive for Coco Republic’s designer. Drawing inspira-tion from the ocean-scape outside, the interior design scheme features soft blues and neutral sand colours with textures and finishes in natural wood, grass and stone. In contrast to these cool elements, situated as the centre-piece of the sitting room, is the EcoSmart Fire 1200SS [from The Fire Company] designed to add warmth and a sense of comfort to the space.

An EcoSmart fire was chosen due to the minimal service require-ments for the unit to run – no gas or flue outlet is required. This particular burner, with its long and low design, was installed in order to create a feature along what was an empty wall. Creating the fireplace chimney-frame in Gyprock and installing the firebox meant that symmetry and balance was also introduced, allowing the lounge-room furniture to sit comfortably around it.

The natural textures of the faux timber wallpaper covering the focal wall and custom-made cabinetry are enhanced by the natural light entering the room through the floor-to-ceiling glass doors. The modern finish of the satin polyurethane on the cabinetry complements the contemporary design of the EcoSmart firebox and burner and provides contrast to the rough, grainy texture of the timber wallpaper. And the soft look and feel of the furnishings speaks of ultimate comfort, while still maintaining a contemporary sophistication.

Shower-over-bath options

The Kaldewei Duo Pool is 50.05cm deep, only 1500mm long and 1m at the widest point! The shorter the length of a bath, the greater depth is required to complete the “comfort equation”. A shorter length means you are sitting more upright, therefore you will require greater depth in the “back” of the bath to support your neck. If you choose to put a shower over this bath it has ample standing room in the base for a generous showering area. Screening this shape of bath will be a challenge so perhaps you shouldn’t attempt that, but instead make the entire floor a wet area and locate the floor-waste close to the bath for rapid draining of the bath area.

Meanwhile, the Twin Pool offers ver-satile solutions for bathroom design, freeing up space for a double-bowl vanity, extra cabinetry or a bidet. In a 120cm x 120cm space, you get a 1700mm long bath which is a luxurious 1.0m wide and suit-able for single-person bathing, two-person bathing and showering. One end is sloped while the other is vertical. This increases the base-length for taller bathers, while making the end with the verti-cal sides safer for showering. The sloped “back” end of the bath also incorporates a “lumbar-support zone” to complete the “com-fort equation”.

Latest wall split air conditioner

The new Aurora Wall Split System air condi-tioners by ActronAir have been built to manage the Australian climate, engineered to comfortably operate in temperatures of up to 50OC to provide cool-ing when it is needed the most. The Aurora series also features an advanced DC Inverter technology on both its indoor and outdoor units, which means quieter operation as well as up to 35% reduced electricity use compared to those with con-ventional AC technology [as claimed by the manufacturer]. Other features include Quiet Mode that can reduce sound and Sleep Mode which maximises comfort by automatically adjusting the tempera-ture while you sleep. In many air conditioners the temperature sensor is located in the indoor unit, and in larger rooms this may result in temperature variations in different parts of the room. Aurora has one sensor in its indoor unit plus another in its remote control. This feature is called Follow Me, which delivers improved comfort exactly where you are in the room. For cleaner air quality, Aurora has a HEPA-BIO filter that captures 99% of particles such as dust, pollen, fungi and bacteria; then a specialized biological en-zyme attacks and kills the microbes. A four-stage indoor coil self-cleaning cycle minimises any build-up of dust and reduces mould growth.

Wicker for the outdoorsAs the lines between indoor and outdoor living continue to blur,

The Outdoor Furniture Specialists have recently sourced a range of new wicker pieces that work in any area of the home. Outdoor lounge suites and luxurious deep seat settings are set to continue to be a dominant feature in outdoor rooms around the country. Con-sidered by some as the epitome of sophistication, wicker settings add a little bit of grandeur to your outdoor space.

A new addition to the wicker deep seat range is the 4-piece Cin-tia Lounge. With its curved edges, it’s not only contemporary but comfortable. It is sold only as a 4-piece set with individual pieces not available. Meanwhile, the new Balerro Wicker Table fills the gap for those seeking a large round wicker table to comfortably sit four. You can use it inside or out and team it with the Lucia Wicker Arm-less Chair for a sophisticated look. And the cozy Wicker Pod swivels on its own free standing base.

The Outdoor Furniture Specialists are located nationwide.

[part of The Laminex Group] have recently introduced a 12mm profile to their range, offering a lean-and-clean European-look for slimline kitchen benchtops or bath-room vanities. And their clas-sic 20mm and 30mm palette has been updated with two new décors – Black Truffle and Basalto. Black Truffle is a dramatic, bold black which can be used as a hero or com-plementing décor to create benchtops, vanities or feature walls; while the finely speckled Basalto adds a darker grey to an already comprehensive col-lection of greys. The essastone collection can be effortlessly coordi-nated with the wider Laminex product portfolio to create first-class interiors. It is resistant to scratches, stains and chemicals.

Safer paint range as easy as one, two, three

New from FX Australia, the Lemon Tree Creek range of envi-ronment-safe coatings is designed as a numbered, easy to use system suitable for most interior and exterior surfaces. There are five water-based coatings in the range: FX Lemon Tree Creek Sealer Undercoat; FX Lemon Tree Creek Ceiling Flat; FX Lemon Tree Creek Low Sheen; FX Lemon Tree Creek Pre-Coat; and FX Lemon Tree Creek Water-Based Enamel.

All coatings have been specifically formulated using cutting edge technology that not only eliminates the health and environmental problems associated with some commonly used paint products, but also delivers superior performance, excellent opacity and easy maintenance. The Lemon Tree Creek range incorporates the latest resins and advanced molecular sieve technology and is APEO-free, and either VOC-free or low VOC.

FX Lemon Tree Creek Sealer Undercoat and FX Lemon Tree Creek Ceiling Flat use molecular sieve technology. Molecular sieve pigments absorb toxins and odours, so when combined with a final coat of breathable FX Lemon Tree Creek Low Sheen, as rec-ommended, toxins are absorbed through the Low Sheen, and stay inert in the Sealer Undercoat. All these coatings are VOC-free. FX Lemon Tree Creek Pre-Coat, formulated for use with FX Lemon Tree Creek Water-Based Enamel (Gloss and Semi-Gloss) on trims and doors, are both low VOC products.

Deck rejuvenationEnsuring your deck is in tip top

shape is relatively easy, with af-fordable and easy-to-use products from Cabot’s. Cabot’s Aquadeck is a durable, low odour decking oil designed to provide exceptional durability to all exterior surfaces. Its formula allows oils to penetrate and nourish timber, and create a durable barrier for additional protection. Cabot’s shopping list comprises: Cabot’s Deck Clean; Cabot’s Deck Scrub Broom; Cabot’s Aquadeck; & Cabot’s Lambswool Applicator.

Step 1: Deck Prep 9:00 – 10:30am: Firstly, prepare a mix of Cabot’s Deck Clean and water, and scrub it into the timber with a Cabot’s Deck Scrub Broom. This will help remove any surface contaminants that could affect the coating.

Step 2: Coat your deck 11:30 – 12:30pm: On your clean and dry deck, apply Aquadeck using a lambswool applicator. Apply liberally along the entire length of the board and coat about 2-3 boards at a time. For colour uniformity, be sure to stir Cabot’s Aquadeck thor-oughly with a broad, flat paddle before and during use. To avoid making application marks in the finish, never stop coating a board mid-way along the board. Always work up to the end of a board or find natural breaks such as joins or corners. Allow two hours between coats.

Step 3: Recoat your deck 2:30 – 3:30pm: Once your first coat is dry, apply a second coat of Aquadeck, following the same process as before. When you’re done wash your tools in water. Allow two hours before replacing furniture back on your deck.

Video intercomPanasonic Australia has re-

leased a convenient video inter-com system [VL-SW250BX, $699 not including installation] with a wireless handset that lets you see who’s at the front-door, as you move around your home. The new system uses a camera mounted outside the front door with a fixed and a wireless video monitor. Checking on visi-tors via the LCD screen of the portable wireless handset is more flexible and convenient than relying only on a fixed monitor. Via the handset or the fixed indoor monitor you can view and speak with visitors, and open the door. Both have voice-activated answering, so if occupied with cooking or other tasks, you can speak with the visitor without having to press buttons.

This new system is designed to be fast and easy for a professional installer to set up and can be expanded as required with additional wireless monitors and repeaters – for example in multi-storey homes and in outdoor entertaining areas. Another convenient feature is the ability to make calls between the indoor monitor and handset. It is also possible to record images of visitors when you are away from home. The maximum distance between the main monitor station and the door station is: using General Cable CAT-3, 50-metres; using General Cable 22AWG, 100 metres. It is available from Panasonic distributor EOS Australia.

The new Snapshot mode is ideal for keeping track of any unan-ticipated or missed guests - such as couriers, tradespeople, friends and family. You can record up to 50 photos of visitors at the door which can be saved, viewed and then discarded as necessary from the receiver. This digital system includes an intercom panel with a built-in camera and receiver with a 2.4-inch colour display for two-way communication with visitors. It’s particularly handy for older and less mobile residents to talk and view securely from inside the home. Just as effective after dark, the Night Vision feature deliv-ers sharp picture quality, even in dim lighting, to help you clearly identify any unexpected visitors. It is available from electrical retail stores nationally.

Crash Cam recorderUniden has launched its second gen-

eration of easy-to-use in-car recording cameras, including a triple-camera model, designed for professionals frequently on the road and other drivers wanting to pro-tect themselves from disputes and claims in case of accidents. Three new models, the triple camera iGO Cam 850 [$199.95], dual camera iGO Cam 820 [$169.95] and single camera iGO Cam 320 [$89.95], offer the latest in vehicle accident recording black box technology. Mounted on the inside of the car windscreen, these cameras automatically detect sudden changes in car movement, such as the onset of an ac-cident, and immediately record the event in high definition. The iGO Cam 850 has a third camera bumper-mounted at the rear of the vehicle, which also operates as a reversing camera.

Packed full of state-of-the-art features, Uniden iGO Cam uses an HD camera for high quality recording. Motion Detection is designed to collect evidence even when the car is parked and without the driver present – with the camera instantly capturing footage if the car is bumped or scraped. Built-in G-sensor and Collision Detection Mode ensure the camera detects a change in motion which will instantly trigger recording. In the event of an accident, this gives you the ability to analyse the direction of impact and view how it happened.

The iGO Cam 850 also features GPS Geotag antenna enabling you to capture locations of where the recording was made. The free software is available from the Uniden website. The iGO Cam 820 is equipped with dual cameras and night vision cameras, so you can record what is going on in the front and back of your vehicle, ensuring all potential areas of the car are monitored. While the entry-level iGO Cam 320 features a single HD camera with Infrared Night Vision to record quality footage even in dimly lit areas. A plug-and-play device, the Uniden iGO Cams are easy to install, configure and operate. A compact and portable design allows you to transfer the camera between vehicles. All new models are compatible with a Micro SD card, and are available from consumer electronics retailers.

Window-glass typesGlass is an important factor for the performance of windows and doors. Here are some terms and

explanations and how glass can be used, provided by Paarhammer Windows & Doors.

• Annealed Glass: the common flat glass often used in double glazing. It tends to break into large jagged shards.

• Toughened Glass: annealed glass is heated to above 600 °C and the surface then rapidly cooled, resulting in increased resistance to breakage. If it does break it forms into small regular, mostly square fragments.

• Laminated glass: this is made of two or more layers of glass with an interlayer bonded in between, providing safety and security. In a breakage the glass is held together by the interlayer. Colouring, sound dampening, and resistance to fire or ultra violet filtering can be incorporated.

• Coated glass: surface coatings are applied to achieve low maintenance, scratch resistance, special reflection, transmission or absorption.

• Conventional single glazing offers little resistance to the passage of heat. Solar radiation that is not reflected or absorbed is transmitted through the glass.

• Tinted glass is the most common type of absorbent glass and comes in a range of colours.

• Reflective glazing maximizes light transmission while reflecting solar radiation and is often used to reduce heat gain especially on western elevations.

• Low E glass (low emissivity) has a metallic or oxide coating which reduces transfer of heat or cold through the glass while still allowing light through. Mostly used in double or triple glazed units.

• Double glazing comprises 2 panes of glass (any glass combination can be used) with a sealed space of ideally 12 to 16mm in between. This space can be filled with air or an inert gas (like argon). Argon gas has molecules that are larger than air molecules and can therefore provide bet-ter insulation properties, increasing efficiency by 7 to 15%. It is colourless, non-flammable and odourless.

• Triple glazing has 3 panes of glass (any glass combination can be used) with sealed spaces of ideally 2mm in between each. Some triple glazed windows can have a U-value as low as less than 1.0. Paarhammer’s best is 0.8 U-value.

Available now: self-cleaning glass; switchable I-glass; glass which generates energy; nano covered glass; sound protection glass; and bushfire resistant glass. In the future Australian window manufacturers will have access to glass with heat mirrors, hence increasing energy efficiency.

Attic bathroomsElegant and barrier-

free floor-level shower surfaces made of Kalde-wei steel enamel are becoming more popular in bathrooms. Provid-ing flush-to-floor access, they lend the room an airy and spacious char-acter. The enamelled shower surface Xetis, for example, features an integrated wall outlet which relocates the drain to a discreet position in the wall, hidden behind a design cover.

Stone bathroom walls

Caesarstone®’s recent introduction of six 13mm slab thickness options into their Classico Collection now makes their prod-uct suitable for use in vertical applications such as bathroom wall panels. Other bath-room applications include vanities, bath surrounds, inset shelving, shower recesses and window sills. These surfaces are non-porous, durable, and resistant to stains, scratches, common household chemicals, mould and mildew, making them suitable for wet area renovations. The large floor-to-ceiling panel sizes allow for less joins and enable the creation of clean, minimal modern spaces.

The teuco Outline BathDelsa Bathware & Design have introduced the teuco range of

spa baths, made from acrylic-based composite material Duralight®. Compact and non-porous across its entire thickness, this durable material is resistant to external agents, which allows for surfaces to be restored to mint-condition. With the use of Hydroline in the teuco Outline Bath, nozzles have been replaced by thin slits that are hidden from view, creating a seamless whirlpool bath. Capitalising also on the ben-efits of coloured lights to emotionally as well as physically cleanse, this bath makes use of a chromo-experience system, offering a relaxing and therapeutic experience. And with the effect of ultra-sound teamed with the whirlpool, Hydrosonic® makes the massage penetrate beneath the skin, for a deep and intense treatment for total well-being. Indulging in 20-minutes of Hydrosonic® is claimed to improve cellular metabolism, encourage lymphatic drainage, help muscles recover after exercise, and reduce stress and joint-pain. Energy efficient hot water

Small Australian households who are keen to save money [up to 78%] with more energy efficient hot wa-ter but don’t have room for a large 315L tank have new options with the launch of two smaller tank sizes (160L and 250L) from Sanden Eco® Hot Water Heat Pump (HWHP) sys-tems. Unlike solar, the Sanden system doesn’t rely on clear sunny days so you can receive the savings rain, hail or shine without the need for an electric booster. All Sanden tanks are stainless steel and manufactured in Albury.

The new 160L tank caters to one to two person households that don’t use a lot of hot water and have limited space. The 160L tank is also suited to townhouses and ground-floor units or those with large-balconies that have an outdoor space for the system. It can replace an 80-150L conventional electric storage system. The new 250L tank provides enough hot water for two to four people, suit-ing a small family or offering a smaller option for those who don’t use much hot water and don’t want a bigger tank. [This tank size is the most popular in the Australian hot water market.]

Sanden is a Japanese-owned global business with more than 50 years’ experience in the production of air conditioning compres-sors. It has applied their understanding of heat transfer technolo-gies to the home environment, resulting in the development of the Sanden Eco® Hot Water Heat Pump System, which uses up to 78% less energy than conventional electric water heaters, absorbing heat from the air to heat the water in the tank.

Automated toiletThe bathroom is becoming one of the primary rooms to showcase

the latest technology such as the Tece Lux, a new in wall cistern available from Candana Designs. The toilet of today can do so much more than simply press-and-flush such as: rinse and dry; purify the air; and flush automatically. TECE has developed a product that provides all these functions, with the technology hidden behind the wall; and visible only as a flat facing panel made of white safety glass. This plate provides non-contact flush activation, with the flush-ing controls illuminated only when approached. It comes with night-light, dual-flush, a large access area for servicing, and 6mm white toughened glass. It also features an air-purification system that oper-ates invisibly, quietly and without cover-up fragrances. This air purification system uses a new ceramic-activated carbon filter, with odours extracted where they occur and the puri-fied air then fed back into the room. It also includes new m-Lift technology, which enables the height of the toilet to be adjusted at any time, even after installation, so anyone of any height can use this toilet. It has a WELS rating of 4 stars and uses 5 – 6 litres for a full flush, or 4 – 6 litres for a half-flush.

Waterfall shower

Embodying current design trends in Italy is the Gaia Waterfall and Rain Shower, available from Christiaan’s [Brisbane]. This combination wall-mounted shower certainly gets your attention, emulating rainfall or a waterfall within your private bathroom. It has the option of adding LED lights to the showerhead, adding to its allure. It has a 2-star WELS rating and uses 11-litres of water per minute.

Precision tapware from GermanySkilful engineering and ergonomic design are the hallmarks of the latest

collection of bathroom tapware from German specialist Kludi. Renowned for its understated architectural profiles and leading-edge water-saving technology Kludi’s new arrival, the Logo Neo, confirms the trend towards softer lines and minimal water usage in basin tapware. The clever eco-aerator of this tap delivers 40% water savings and contributes to its 5 star WELS water conservation rating, using 6-litres/minute. The Logo Neo [$199], standing 126mm high with a spout reach of 115mm, has a ceramic disc cartridge with safety hot water limiter. There is a matching bath/shower mixer with diverter [$329] and without diverter [$269]; and on a more practical level its soft curves and lack of sharp angles make for ease of cleaning. Available from Tradelink stores nationally.

New Caesarstone benchtops

Caesarstone® has introduced seven new designs into their Clas-sico™ collection, available from kitchen showrooms nationally. Vanilla Noir™ is a classic rich black featuring wider delicate natural light veins. Alpine Mist™ has a white cool grey background featur-ing delicate natural crisp white veins. Bianco Drift™, inspired by light natural granites, incorporates delicate organic vein features with subtle colourations of light grey and white, with a hint of light brown. Calcutta Classic™ features stronger larger scale wider light grey veins on a white base. Raw Concrete™ was inspired by con-crete colours and surfaces and provides the modern industrial look of concrete but with the performance benefits of a quartz surface. Clamshell™ is a soft fusion of light grey with white features. Sum-mer Rye™ is a warm light brown structure with soft wisps of white throughout.

Caesarstone appCaesarstone® has developed an online Visualiser app to facilitate

the inclusion of their quartz benchtops into kitchen-and bathroom-designs. This app offers a photorealistic representation of a kitchen or bathroom, which can then be customised with a colour palette from the Caesarstone range. This allows you to simply and conven-iently exchange different design styles and refine colour choices between members of the family and design consultants. It also lets you select flooring materials, wall colours and even cabinet styles to accurately depict the overall tone and feel of your renovation-project with a visual design mock-up. You can then save your selec-tion, share it around, and see a summary of your design-options. This Visualiser app is available to try on the Caesarstone website www.caesarstone.com.au. For best results you should use a desk-top, laptop or tablet device.

For the outdoors kitchenClark has extended its Pete Evans

Kitchen Sink and Accessories collec-tion to include a range of alfresco sinks, accessories and mixer taps, designed for outdoor entertaining. The single and double bowl sinks have been constructed from cor-rosion-resistant, 316 marine-grade stainless steel to provide maximum durability; and come with a bam-boo chopping board, stainless steel multi-bowl, BBQ tray and a basket waste. The Multi-Bowl is ideal for food prepara-tion and marinating, and can be used as an ice bucket or drinks cooler; while the BBQ Tray is oven safe and can be used for transporting, warming and serving barbecued foods. Both fit neatly over the sink bowl.

Timber veneer alternative

Laminex has recently introduced a new High Pressure Laminate (HPL) option, Nuance HPL, to match their Impressions Textured Surfaces Nuance finish. Costing less than timber veneer, Nuance HPL enables designers, speci-fiers and architects to achieve the look of authentic timber on a budget. In an-swer to the growing trend of woodgrain settings in both residential and com-mercial interiors, Nuance HPL provides the solution for an integrated palette of High and Low Pressure Laminates; and has been made to match the existing Nuance pre-finished boards allowing it to be utilised where veneers would typically be used. For home renovations and construction, Nuance HPL allows designers and fabricators the ability to con-nect elements such as benchtops and kitchen cabinetry with open shelving – a growing trend in integrated living spaces – or corner shelving on island benches.

Designed to match all 24 Nuance decors in the Impressions Tex-tured Surfaces range, the biggest demand is for the popular Nuance woodgrains, ranging through light-washed, grey-brown and rich woodgrains. The washed look of Alaskan or the warm grey under-tones of Lustrous Elm are ideal for modern and on-trend spaces. The darker undertones of Domain and Burnished Wood are more of a classic look and can be teamed with neutrals for a sophisticated and stylish interior. Natural Zebrano is a mid-toned woodgrain and will effortlessly blend in with any room.

Stain-resistant penetrating sealer

A common problem with laying stone or concrete tiles/pavers is that the as-new appearance suffers over time. Stains from food, wine and oil, or mould/algae growth often occur and cleaning will therefore be required. However, due to the penetration of staining materials into the substrate, this is usually not successful. Accord-ingly, Tech-Dry has developed a new solvent-based stain-resistant sealer Protectaseal-S2 that uses state-of-the-art nanotechnology to significantly improve the stain resistant performance. The new Protectaseal-S2 is suitable for most masonry substrates including natu-ral or reconstituted stone, concrete pavers or blocks, terracotta and porcelain tiles, providing excellent stain resistant performance.

The key features of this sealer include: excellent resistance to oil or water-based stains; reduction of water absorption and algae/mould growth; deep penetration without significantly changing the surface appearance; UV stable & permanently bonded to the masonry with long term durability; no surface coating to peel off making it low-maintenance; and suitable for porous, dense or polished finishes.

Tech-Dry manufactures an extensive range of penetrating ma-sonry sealers in Australia with proprietary technology and therefore can offer these sealers at affordable prices with prompt customer service. The new Protectaseal-S2 is available from the Tech-Dry head office in Melbourne and interstate outlets.

Classic dishwasherThe new Beko freestanding dishwasher

[model DSFN6835 in white $1079, or stainless steel $1189] is quiet enough that even if you dine in your kitchen or live in an open plan, your conversation will not be disturbed. It has a Multipurpose Removable Cutlery Drawer that pulls out from the bottom of the dishwasher to enable you to wash smaller items like cutlery and espresso cups. With a 5-star WELS water rating it uses 11.2-litres of water/wash. Besides the main water safety system that shuts off the water in-let, Watersafe+ provides extra safety by automatically shutting off the water if the inlet hose begins to leak. The Flexible Half Load also offers you the choice to load the up-per, lower or both racks, to use only the required amount of water; while the smart dirt sensor works out the necessary water pressure so grimy items are subjected to higher water pressure compared to less dirty items such as glassware. Mums can keep bottles hygienic with the baby bottle holder accessory integrated into the dishwasher; and the Baby Care Program ensures bottles and plates are left germ-free via an extra hot rinse cycle.

It improves the way space can be used and cleverly accommodate pots and pans up to 24cm in diameter – in essence allowing larger items to be heated on compact cooktops. The smart induction technology automati-cally recognises the size and position of each pan, so everything can be moved about the cooktop with ease.

Offered in two sizes (heights of 14cm $1499, or 29cm), Neff’s fully extendable warming drawer is a handy all-rounder. It is not only suited to gently heating up to 12 place settings ahead of serv-ing food, but can also keep precooked food warm, defrost delicate foods, melt chocolate, make yoghurt or prove dough.

It features Neff’s Softlight® with dimmer func-tion, with the light intensity able to be adjusted to suit any mood or situation.

Induction cooktop innovations

Instead of the traditional circular in-ductors, ILVE’s new G5 range of induc-tion cooktops has been reengineered with a square-shaped inductor panel to maximise the cooking space. The cook-top has a slider touch control offering 11 heating levels; heat is instantaneous; temperature control is immediate; and the heat is evenly spread over the bot-tom of the pan. Its KeraBlack+ glass surface is both practical and stylish; incorporates ergonomic central positioning that allows more spaces for pots and pans; and can be kept clean effortlessly. It also has an auto-stop function that is triggered after 10 hours, plus a temperature-limiter in the event of boil-dry accidents. There are five sizes: 60cm, 70cm, 78cm, 90cm and 91cm; with prices ranging from $3199 through to $4599.

A cool & private summerFeeling a bit exposed to your neigh-

bours? Well here’s a way to keep your house cooler through the hot summer and enjoy some daytime privacy as well. Install ENERGY CONTROL Mirror Pri-vacy tinted film on your windows. Dur-ing the day it shields you from the view of nosy neighbours. You can see out but they can’t see in. It reflects up to 80% of the sun’s uncomfortable heat and helps cut down your air conditioning bills.

The peel ‘n stick film is so easy to install. First thoroughly clean the window and spray the glass with a solution of baby shampoo and bottled water. Then apply the film to the window, using a squeegee to press out the air and water bubbles. The job can be finished in minutes with a professional result. And yes, it can eventually be removed - with a little effort.

ENERGY CONTROL Mirror Privacy blocks out 98% of UV rays to help protect your furnishings from irreversible fading and to shield your eyes and skin from sun damage.

ENERGY CONTROL Mirror Privacy is distributed by Handi Home Supplies, Melbourne and is available from Bunnings and other hardware and paint outlets throughout Australia. It comes in 2 sizes, 2M x 90cm (around $34.95) and 2.4M x 1.2M (around $48.95).

Penetrol solves peeling and fl aking and makes paint stick to almost anything - even glass.Penetrol is unique. It creeps into the most minute crevices and pinholes of any surface where ordinary paint cannot enter. There it dries to a tough yet fl exible fi nish, form-ing a powerful bonding fi lm for the paint. Used alone as a primer/sealer or added to oil based paint, varnish, stains, metal or wood primers it enhances their inherent qualities and makes them stick to almost anything – even glass. Premature peeling, fl aking and cracking are things of the past.No more uneven paint fi lm - a major cause of early paint break-down. And, unlike thinners, Penetrol does not evaporate but actually makes more paint and saves money. Penetrol also stops rust and corrosion.Next time you buy oil paint ask for Penetrol for that perfect paint job.

2 ovens in oneScholtès 60cm

Multi-Function Grande capacity oven [$3699], with up to 11 automatic cooking functions, offers the flexibil-ity of two ovens in one while fitting into a standard 60cm oven space. With an 81-litre capacity the oven provides 4 levels of cooking. But the clever Bi-volume divider allows you to split the oven into two sepa-rately controlled cavities of 23-litres and 58-litres. Multiple dishes can be cooked simultaneously at separate temperatures saving time and energy, without odours and flavours mixing. Two electronic thermo-stats maintain accurate dual temperatures. Cleaning is a breeze with Scholtès Pyrolytic, a self-cleaning function. During this cycle the oven will heat up to 500o turning fat deposits into ash. With the door automati-cally locked during the cleaning process the triple glass cool touch door offers maxi-mum protection for children. The remov-able inner oven door consists of a smooth glass pane which ensures no fat or deposits in seals or crevices.

Commercial laminatesFormica® has updated with the

introduction of 29 new decors, with 9 now forming part of the Commer-cial Colour Range, including versatile woodgrains, modern patterns and flexible solid colours. Tailored for the Australian commercial market, the updated range offers designers a contemporary palette that enables the creation of modern, coordi-nated spaces. This latest update is integrated across the Formica range of laminate, decorated board and componentry products. The range is on-trend, versatile and timeless, and suitable for commercial offices, retail fitouts, relevant schemes for healthcare, and furniture in schools and classrooms.

Woodgrains continue to be a firm favourite in commercial spac-es, used in horizontal and vertical applications. The introduction of mid-toned woodgrains, Ash Woodline, Cinnamon Ash, and Charred Woodline add an extra dimension, perfect for creating durable timber looks. Finesse Sand and Finesse Stone are subtle patterned greys that can be partnered with new solid Sarum Grey for a mod-ern look; while Brushed Nickel adds a new moody metallic element to the range.

Formica has also introduced new magnetic metallic laminates in Glossy White and Matt Black finishes. Glossy White is ideal for whiteboard surfaces; while Matt Black can be used to create mag-netic chalk blackboards. The Formica Commercial Colour Range is available on large decorated board format, with colour-matched ABS edging available.

Retro kitchen appliancesSmeg has released a smaller version of its retro-style Victoria 110cm upright cooker. The

Available in traditional panna or black enamel, it offers multiple cooking options and a generous capacity. It features two ovens – the main at lower left and a tall auxiliary at right – plus a separate electric static grill and a six burner gas hob. Both ovens have easy-clean Ever-Clean enamel interiors – while the main oven also has Vapour Clean cleaning technology. through the renovation process. Visit our web site www.floodaustralia.net

The Flood Company has released a brilliant new product range that will rejuvenate and re-colour old tiles, laminates & appliances.

Flood Tile & Laminate Paint is an interior high performance coating designed to give a hardwearing high gloss finish. It will totally transform your kitchen, bathroom or appliances saving the cost of major renovations.

Save time and money when using Flood Tile & Laminate Paint as there is NO primer required.

Transform your tiles

Follow the easy 3-step-application system

Use Flood Tile & Laminate Cleaner to remove grime, grease, soap residue &

any other contaminates before application of the Flood Tile & Laminate Paint.

Scuff the surface thoroughly using a180-220 sanding block to

key the surface. Remove all dust after sanding with clean water. If there has been mould present in the past, apply Flood Mould Action, following the label instructions. Allow the surface to dry thoroughly.

Apply Flood Tile & Laminate Paint after stirring with a wide

blade stirrer. A good job requires a good quality brush. When brushing use even strokes in one direction, then the other, do not over brush the product. For larger areas we recommend using a roller with low pile; a mohair cover would be a good choice.

Apartment fireplacesApartment-living can mean

smaller spaces but that doesn’t mean you have to forego enjoy-ing a fireplace. EcoSmart Fires [from The Fire Company] offer complete Fire Design Solutions to fit compact urban spaces. Be-cause EcoSmart Fires are fuelled by clean-burning bioethanol, all of their Fireplace Inserts, Bioetha-nol Burners, and Freestanding Designer Fireplaces are vent free with no need for gas or electric lines. This makes EcoSmart Fires an ideal solution for high-rise buildings and areas with strict building codes.

American interior designer Kathy Adcock-Smith and architect Joe Eisner both had U.S. clients who wanted to add a luxurious and easy-to-install centrepiece in their high-rise apartments. She faced the challenge of finding a fireplace that provided an architectural grounding for the seating arrangement while also preserving the beautiful Dallas city-view. The Vision, with its clear glass back and ventless burner, offered an ideal solution.

Meanwhile, New York architect Joe Eisner needed a fireplace that met the design restraints of high rise construction, specifically a ventless fireplace similar to those he had seen in his international travels in high end hotels. The solution was the Firebox 650SS. Ventless, zero clearance, and made of brushed stainless steel, this model brought both high design and functionality to the renovation-project.

Sanding made easier

With the WORX WX652 Random Orbital Sander [$59] and its attached dust bag and collect-as-you-work technology, sanding jobs become both cleaner and healthier. It is designed as a one-size-fits-all sander with an impressive 125mm disc diameter. Additionally, the ability to switch between speeds means you are assured high debris removal on a variety of materials; while the large orbital diameter increases the removal rate of material and in turn reduces the risk of swirl marks on your material. Finally, switching between sandpaper sheets has been made easier with an intuitive hook-and-loop system.

Steam cleaningKärcher Tools’

SC2.500 Steam Cleaner [$349] is the perfect for keeping your home hygienically clean, eliminating 99.99% of all common household bacteria. Steam Clean-ing is fast becoming the method of choice for cleaning surfaces around the home: it’s effective; affordable; and environment-friendly. The SC2.500 is a green alternative to chemical based cleaning products. Simply fill the SC2.500 tank with tap water, turn on the steam cleaner, and start cleaning. It comes with a 2-metre steam hose gun, detail nozzle for grout and other tight areas, a hand tool for the shower recess and mirror, a round brush for scrubbing out stubborn dirt, and a steam flow regulation switch on the han-dle. You can even use steam to refresh your curtains, cushions and other upholstered household items.

Asbestos may be in your homeAustralia has one of the highest rates of asbestos related diseases in

the world most likely because Australia has also been ranked among the top consumers of asbestos cement products per capita. In 2008, a study by Professor Anthony Johnson into asbestos exposure during home renovations in NSW revealed that: 60.5% of DIY-renovators reported being exposed to asbestos during home renovations [cutting AC fibro sheeting was the most common activity resulting in asbestos exposure]; 53% reported their partner and 40% reported their chil-dren were also exposed to asbestos during DIY home renovations; and non-DIY renovators were less likely to be exposed or have their families exposed.

Asbestos products can be found in any Australian home built or renovated before 1987 even brick, weatherboard, fibro and clad homes. Asbestos can be found underfloor coverings such as carpets, linoleum and vinyl tiles, behind wall and floor tiles, in cement floors, internal and external walls, ceilings, eaves, garages, around hot water pipes, fences, extensions to homes, outdoor toilets, dog kennels and backyard sheds – it could be anywhere! If you disturb products con-taining asbestos you risk inhaling asbestos fibres.

Many Australians may unknowingly be putting their health and the health of their children, and neighbours, at risk because they don’t understand the dangers of working with asbestos or know where it might be found in and around their home. During renovations or the demolition of homes containing asbestos, asbestos fibres can be re-leased into the air and be inhaled leading to asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma, sometimes many years later. Not only homes constructed of fibro contain asbestos.

Before renovating visit www.asbestosawareness.com.au to learn where asbestos might be found in your home, the dangers of disturbing it and how best to manage it. Asbestos inspections are the newest addition to the range of services offered by Jim’s Building Inspections.

Tough for tradies

Bosch Blue has launched their GBH 2-28 DBV Bulldog Xtreme Max Rotary Hammer [$319]. This hammer-drill is packed with state-of-the-art features that allow tradies to work with more power and for longer by reducing vibration, thereby minimising fatigue. Equipped with 3.2 joules of power, it can get through the toughest of jobs with an 850-Watt motor, and with higher drilling capacity (28mm) achieved at 40% faster speeds. It comes with Bosch’s inno-vative Counter-Balance Vibration Control to improve comfort for all day drilling and chiselling, which works by elongating the air cushion between the piston and the striker to dampen vibration levels created by the striker’s ‘backstroke’. Other features include: improved soft grip for all day ap-plications; 3-mode operation for hammer drilling, chiselling or drilling-only; variable speed trigger for accurate bit starting; and hammer-hook for quick and easy tool stor-age.

Luxurious master bathroomsFor master bathrooms

renovators are utilising smart spatial inclusions such as wall dividers, floor zoning and split levels to en-sure the perception of space is enhanced and an element of separation, say between bathing and toileting areas, is maintained. Freestanding baths often form the centre-piece with other luxury features including overflow and BubbleMassage baths, deluge showers, plus state-ment basins and taps. The bathroom pictured shows the sculptural Escale BubbleMassage bath [$2099] by Kohler separated from the minimal wall-hung Escale toilet [$1299, 4 star WELS rated, using 4.5l for a full-flush and 3l for a half-flush] with a head-high divider supporting the Escale countertop vanity [1010mm, $1199] with pedestal [$349].

Another option is Kohler’s Sok overflow bath [13,999] offering an ‘infinity pool’ effect with a continuous flow of water cascading over the sides. Its deep design provides enough room for two people; while the whirlpool options cre-ate thousands of tiny bubbles at varying intensities to massage and support. Meanwhile, Kohler’s RainCan overhead shower injects 2-litres of air into the water stream every minute, resulting in plump water droplets that give the im-pression of a ‘rain shower’ deluge, yet it uses only 9-litres of water/minute and has a 3-star WELS rating.

All Kohler bathroom products are available nationally from Tradelink stores and Mico Design together with Northern’s in South Australia.

Coordinated bathroomsThe updated Happy

D.2 series, available through Candana De-signs, offers a coordi-nated bathroom solu-tion. The slim, rounded corners featured give it a distinctive design. The freestanding bathtub also adopts the sleek radii of the ceramics; and relaxing in the bath is especially comfort-able with the optional neckrest. The washbasin is available with a va-riety of options to suit any bathroom design. The furniture washbasin option is available with a matching vanity unit or with a metal console; while the surface-mount-ed washbasin option is available as a classic washbasin with pedestal or siphon cover. One of the basins, which feature a curved rear rim, appears to float gently in its surroundings - creating the sense of weightlessness that translates throughout the series. The toilets and bidets are available as wall-mounted, floor- standing and back-to-wall options, both with and without the Soft-Close seat function. The wall-mounted toilet can also be combined with the SensoWash® Starck shower-toilet seat.

Innovative pool maintenanceTest strips are the most commonly used

means by which pool owners measure water chemistry, but they have two weaknesses: they don’t tell us which chemicals to use; and what quantities to add to the water. TWIST & DOSE is an innovative system designed by Zodiac to help maintain a pool between pool shop visits. It takes the guess work out of the pool chemical dosing. The TWIST is the key component. It is a simple-to-use, yet intelligent test strip reading-device that tells you which chemicals to add and in what quantities. It is simple to use, and easy to understand.

TWIST & DOSE tests 3 key parameters of your pool water: Total Alkalinity; pH level; and Free Chlorine. You simply twist each of the 3 yellow rings, starting from the top, to match the col-our of the TWIST & DOSE 3-in-1 test strip pad with the colour for Total Alkalinity, pH and Free Chlorine. You then turn around the TWIST and simply read (in the windows situated at the back of the product) the dosages of Zodiac chemicals to add to the water.

TWIST top yellow ring for Total Alkalinity level: The top yellow ring recommends the specific dose of Zodiac Alkalinity Up to increase TA level or Zodiac pH Down to decrease TA level.

TWIST middle yellow ring for pH level: The middle yellow ring recommends dosages of Zodiac pH Up to increase pH levels or Zodiac pH Down to decrease pH levels as needed.

TWIST bottom yellow ring for Free Chlorine: With the water now balanced, the bottom yellow ring prescribes the amount of Zodiac Pool Sparkle Purifier to achieve optimal protec-tion against bacteria and other nasties without over chlorinating the water.

CEMENT BASEDTILE ADHESIVE

Sandstone honed masonry

Austral Masonry has recently launched its GB Sandstone Honed Masonry Block range. Delivering classic beauty with soft textures and colours, this new range deliv-ers a finish to give any project a stylish and distinctive look. Produced by exposing the face of blended sands, they have the colour of natural sandstone with the design flex-ibility of masonry blocks. The blocks have been honed back to create a smooth fin-ish to give them a subtle sheen. This fine surface finish creates a distinctive, natural look that complements both traditional and contemporary architectural styles; and they come in three colour blends: Brisbane Blend, Sydney Blend and Endeavour Blend. There is a 200mm and a 100mm series; plus four choices of capping tiles for in-tricate finishes. The GB Sandstone Honed Masonry range is structurally strong; and, like other heavy-weight products such as brick, can provide resistance to the some-times harsh heat, when teamed with pas-sive design principles.

Metal-look bricks

With their new Urban Metal col-lection, PGH Bricks & Pavers’ latest product-development features bricks with fully glazed metallic finishes that literally shimmer with sophistication. The finishes give beautiful variations in colour as the light hits the surface in different ways and at different times. These ultra-modern bricks are avail-able to use internally or externally and can brave the elements without losing their metallic colour or shine. They help to create a sleek, modern ur-banised atmosphere that is dignified, deliberate and powerful. The Urban Metal collection comprises four fully glazed metallic finishes: Bronze Sheen, Copper Lustre, Silver Spark and Zinc Shimmer.

Robert Selkirk bricksThe Robert Selkirk Collection

celebrates the original values of his brick business established 130 years ago. The ILLUMINA range in this collection utilises technical expertise to create a lustrous surface inspired by pre-cious stones in three colours: Black Diamond is a blackened deep charcoal, moody and brilliant; Sil-ver Pearl is a softer greyed luminous tone; and Plum Sapphire is a shimmery, more col-ourful rich shade with red undertones. ILLUMINA is a sophisticated contemporary range with clean edges and a uniform semi-glazed face finish. Perfect with rolled or flush mortar in tonal or contrast for a design statement, it creates the look of luxury with an empha-sis on design.

The ARTISAN range reflects classic, timeless design with a tex-tured handcrafted appearance which acknowledges the beauty of its natural earthy origins, in 2 colours: Lydiard is a rich chestnut brown tone with a blue contrast; while Lonsdale is a timeless choice with deep charcoal tones. ARTISAN is a versatile range which com-plements both traditional and contemporary architectural styles. This adaptable range is available in both slimline 50mm and stand-ard 76mm dimensions.

Versatile spray glueFrom craft projects to permanent fixtures,

SikaBond® Spray Fix [$18.98] is a multipur-pose glue for a range of household and decora-tor tasks. This high performance aerosol spray can be used for upholstering, floor repairs and furniture laminating, as well as a range of art and craft projects. Easy-to-use, and with low odour, it is suitable for both high and low adhesion projects – making it a versatile addi-tion to the toolbox. It is possible to reposition materials within one to two minutes of appli-cation before it dries to a clear, neat finish. For small-scale projects that require light adhesion, such as scrapbooking or handmade cards and invitations, it can be applied on just one sur-face to provide long-lasting results. Free from chlorinated solvents, SikaBond Spray Fix is ideal for framing photographs and art prints, and will not damage delicate fabrics, papers or cards. In situations where high strength adhe-sion is needed, it should be applied to both contact surfaces to form a superior and per-manent bond. This method is recommended for more involved DIY projects including floor-covering installation, laminating and uphol-stery. It is suitable for use on a wide range of materials including felt, fabric, metal, foam, cork, most plastics, fibreglass, wood, laminate and carpet; and is available from Bun-nings Stores nationally.

Shapes of greyBoral is seeing a trend in the use of grey, blue

and black bricks for creating statement exteriors. Light greys are proving popular in Queensland; while Victorian homeowners have shown a preference for high impact, darker tones. New South Wales homes feature a consistent mix of both. The lighter hues of soft greys and silvers can create a low-key, coastal effect; while darker shades can make a contemporary, non-conform-ist statement. Dark bricks, such as Boral’s Nuvo Victorian Blue, are a good option for showing off the design of the home, as darker shades mini-mise distractions and encourage the eye to focus on the shape and structure of the house. Home builders and renovators can also choose to combine light and dark shades of charcoal and grey to create an interesting exterior or interior feature wall. The beauty of bricks is that they can be mixed and matched, offering design flex-ibility. Boral bricks are available in a wide variety of colours, textures, shapes and sizes. The bricks are kiln-fired up to 1130°C, locking in colour for the life of the brick. Bricks are available in stand-ard, 50mm and double height sizes.

Renovating with blondesJust like a coat of white

paint, light timber flooring and decking can add a fresh, neutral canvas for interior design schemes and landscap-ing. As a natural material, timber also helps to create a sense of tranquillity. Timbers from the ‘blonde palette’ are an attractive option for renovators wanting to cre-ate a sense of openness and space. Lighter timber species, such as Blackbutt, Messmate or Stringybark, can help open up a small living area to make it appear larger. While darker timber species need lots of artificial or natural light, pale timbers can pick up and accentuate available light.

Whether traditional, country or modern, timber in lighter shades can add a fresh touch to any design. You can create a contempo-rary Scandinavian look with Blackbutt species; or fashion a French provincial feel with a lighter shade such as Stringybark. And con-sider using the same species for both timber flooring and decking to create a flow from indoors through to outdoors, another way to give an illusion of more space.

Boral’s timber flooring and decking is available in a range of Australian species. Blackbutt has natural fire resistant properties and can be used in bush-fire prone areas rated up to BAL 29. If you want to install a DIY timber deck consult the Timber Development Association’s Decking Design Guide, which outlines key design and construction considerations for light domestic timber decks. It is available for download at www.timber.net.au.

Cordless vac with full size punch

The latest Dyson Digital Slim™ DC59 vacuum cleaner is light-weight at 2kg, cordless, and packs the same power as a mains vacuum cleaner [according to Dyson]. With 20-minutes of powerful suction, it is easy to manoeuvre between high, low and hard-to-reach spaces. There is no more fiddling about with plugs or tripping over cords; you simply remove it from the docking station and go.

Dyson’s V6 motor is faster and stronger than its predecessor with a higher power density, giving the DC59 the performance of a mains powered machine – but without the cord. 15 cyclones work in parallel across two tiers to capture fine dust. Dyson engineers ensured an equal flow of air throughout the cyclone pack by engi-neering the airways to guarantee constant centrifugal forces and high dust separation.

Its small motor in the hand, instead of at the floor, makes it easy to clean up-top, down-low and in-between spaces. The lightweight aluminium wand can be detached for stairs, upholstery, cars and other compact spaces; while storage is easy via the wall-mounted docking station. It’s priced at $649 for the Animal model and $599 for the Multi floor.

Cork plank floorsReadyCork®’s engineered floating floor planks [from Premium Floors] are 1746mm long x 194mm wide

x 13.5mm thick, including a 3.2mm cork top layer and a 1.8mm cork backing for impact sound insulation. There are five shades available in the ReadyCork Vita range: Oak Blanc, Oak Pearl, Oak Antique, Oak Sienna and Oak Java. It can be easily installed without any need for sanding, glue or sealants. Cork is waterproof and the natural waxy substance inherent in cork, called suberin, makes it mould- and mildew-resistant.

Cork flooring is soft, comfortable to walk on and impact resistant thanks to the natural memory of cork - it always moves back to its initial shape. Cork flooring is warm underfoot in winter, yet refreshing underfoot in summer, utilising its natural insulation characteristics. Importantly, Cork is also a natural noise canceller, which makes it quiet underfoot. No glue or other adhesives are needed for installation. ReadyCork just clicks together and is installed floating over an underlay. The Uniclic system employs world’s-best-practice and it is therefore a DIY installation job.

Perfectly flat with no visible fixings, lightweight and with the versatility, beauty and durability of European Oak, these boards are189mm wide x 10mm thick (comprising a 2mm European Oak overlay over 8mm ply)and provide excel-lent insulation and noise protection. They can be applied over studs or existing wall finishes, such as plaster or plasterboard, and are available in a range of colours and finishes.

New decking design guide

For those considering adding a deck to their outdoor living spaces, the Timber Develop-ment Association has created a practical Decking Design Guide. This guide outlines key design and construction considerations for light domestic timber decks and applies to both raised decks and close-to or on-ground tim-ber decks. Information included in the guide covers decks that are associated with detached houses, villas and townhouses, as well as garages, sheds and swimming pools. This new guide will help home renovators realise what’s involved in build-ing a deck. A timber deck can last many years so before construction takes place it’s important for homeowners to consider all the options. In addition to aesthetic considerations such as colour and finish, lifestyle and location can be important factors when selecting decking timber. Whoever is responsible for the design and construction of the deck must be aware of the requirements of the relevant standards and regula-tion. The guide provides general information on decking boards, timber durability, fixings and fittings, finishing and maintenance. It also provides information on constructing a deck in bushfire prone areas. The easy-reference domestic decking guide is available for download at www.timber.net.au

Fire resistant timberWith their high density, toughness

and durability Australian hardwood spe-cies are recommended for the building of decks, verandahs and other exterior home improvements. Boral Timber advises that there are decking timbers available which are classified as fire resistant. Blackbutt is a good choice as it has naturally fire resistant proper-ties. Anyone constructing a deck in a bushfire zone must ensure they comply with the requirements of the Australian Standard (AS3959 -2009) Building in Bushfire Prone Areas.

There are many steps that can be taken to protect existing verandahs before and during the fire season to reduce the impact of direct flames and wind-driven embers. In the event of fire, shrubs plant-ed adjacent to a house or structure can act as a ‘ladder fuel’ which can allow a ground fire to travel via the shrub onto the wall or roof of the house. It’s important to cut back or remove shrubs, particu-larly those next to windows. Other tips:

keep verandahs well maintained by sealing timber with a non-combustible seal;

fill in small gaps around the deck structure where an ember might lodge - larger openings can be fitted with ember-guards [such as perforated mesh with 2mm openings];

check that decking is spaced at around 0-5mm; gaps of 5-10mm have been shown to be vulnerable to ember attack;

enclose the subfloor of the verandah using mesh or bushfire resistant timbers, such as Blackbutt or Spotted Gum.

Myths surrounding deck maintenance

Cabot’s are debunking some of the myths associated with deck maintenance.

Myth #1: New timber does not need to be cleaned prior to coating. Fact: New timber contains tannins, oils, dirt and in some cases mould, which must be removed before coating. If you’re installing a new deck it is important to know that new timber can contain a lot of tannins and oils. The tannins, oils and dirt will affect the look and longevity of the finish you ap-ply so they need to be removed before coating. The most effective way is by cleaning the timber with Cabot’s Deck Clean. Note that new, tannin-rich timber should be left uncoated for four to six weeks to allow the tannins to leach out before it’s sealed.

Myth #2: Oil-based finishes last longer than water-based finishes. Fact: Water-based deck fin-ishes which are based on modern technology, such as Cabot’s Aquadeck, are formulated to last longer than some traditional oil-based coatings. Like traditional oil-based finishes, modern water-based products, such as Cabot’s Aquadeck, penetrate into the timber, nourishing the grain. The added benefit of water-based finishes is the barrier it forms on top of the timber, protecting it against the elements for longer without risk of cracking, peeling or blistering. Cabot’s Aquadeck provides significant durability and resistance to UV damage for decking and exterior timbers.

Myth #3: You can’t use your deck for a week after coating. Fact: With fast-drying, water-based products like Cabot’s Aquadeck you can use your deck the same day as coating. While traditional oil-based decking oils can take up to 24 hours or more to dry, water-based prod-ucts generally have a quicker drying time, such as Cabot’s Aquadeck which has a recoat time of just two hours.

Myth #4: You need to coat your deck only once the timber begins to grey. Fact: Grey timber is a sign of decaying timber which should be avoided. Greyness is the first visible sign of decaying timber and signals when the surface layer begins to deteriorate and collect dirt. However this is also a sign that your timber is suffering. To test if the surface of your deck requires a fresh coat, sprinkle water onto the surface. If the water beads on the surface, the deck is still protected. If the water is absorbed it is a sign that the old finish has worn away, leaving the wood underneath unprotected. If left unfinished, it will begin to grey.

Adbri Masonry has recently developed a new vertical retaining wall system, Versastone®, which comes with standard blocks, corners and caps; and utilises Adbri’s spe-cial dry stack system. This system utilises self-locking lugs that allow each block to neatly lock into the next without the need for adhesives or mortar. It has a similar smooth finish as their Euro® Stone paver series, while incorporat-ing the innovative self-locking lug design of their Versa-wall® product line. The new Versastone® system is also lighter, making it an easy product for DIY outdoor projects. This retaining wall system has a premium shot blast texture and is available in four natural colours: Oatmeal, Steel, Ivory and Charcoal. These cool-toned colours were chosen to provide home renovators with the opportunity to incorporate

a modern, more industrial-styled aesthetic into outdoor spaces.

Retaining walls can help you transform underutilised parts of your garden. With the right flowering plant or palm tree, an ugly corner can be transformed into an attractive focal point. Or you can maximise the use of your retaining wall to have it double as a bench seat. Ver-sastone® blocks are perfect for this application and are available in specially designed corner units. If you can use a bit of help getting started, watch Adbri Masonry and Jason Hodge’s helpful short online instructional videos.

Jason provides step-by-step instructions, top tips and trade secrets for retaining wall projects. To view Jason’s instructional videos visit www.adbrimasonry.com.au/jason-hodges-diy-videos.

Schots Home Emporium has gathered together a special collection of Vintage Oak Doors, inspired by the grandeur and luxury of rustic French chateaux and Paris-ian apartments. The range comprises three types: Bordeaux; French Terrace; and French Double. Crafted from solid oak hewn from 60-year-old trees from sustainable forests, each door has an individual, distinctive grain that complements the design. The Bordeaux is based upon the 3-panel style commonly seen in chateaux throughout the Bordeaux region in France. The French Terrace includes raised, solid oak beading on the external surface echoing character-

istic Parisian styling. And the French Double floods any room with natural light whilst keeping with the distinctive design of pro-vincial terrace doors.

This collection combines beautiful 18th-century French aesthetics with modern construction and engineering. The solid, engineered core construction is covered with 3mm of highest-quality oak veneer. This special design prohibits excessive movement of the timber, which means the doors will not warp and can be used in a number of applications where solid doors may be unsuitable, while retaining the look and characteristics of a solid door. The col-

lection includes glass in the design to allow natural light to flow into the interior spaces. Specially-sourced 5mm toughened bevelled glass ensures energy efficiency and insula-tion from noise and weather. The glass is available with glazing options.

These Vintage Oak doors are prefinished with a smoked white grain and pre-sealed with a polyurethane varnish. This highlights the natural grain enhancing each door’s natural characteristics. Matching vintage oak door jambs, architraves and skirting are available to provide that classic finishing touch.

Hebel is Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) manufactured from sand, cement, recycled material, lime, gypsum and aerating agents. It is specially wet moulded to create the aerated structure; semi-cured so it can be handled and cut to shape in various lengths and profiles; then finally fully cured in a steam pressure autoclave to create the hard, finished AAC material. Hebel products are 100% Australian manufactured by CSR Building Products Limited. It is highly fire resistant so can be used in bushfire locations, offers high acoustic absorbing properties and assists substantially in im-proving energy ratings and the reduction of energy bills for cooling and heating. Hebel PowerPanels are often faster to build with than other material, which helps speed up the building process, saving time and money.

Built with GyprockSituated 320m above sea level, on a steep hill amidst a dense

landscape of trees, sits the spectacular Rumney Rest, an award-winning dwelling located in Mount Rumney, a suburb of Hobart. Designed with sustainability at its core, the client was looking for a minimalistic, contemporary two-bedroom pavilion-style home. The exterior landscape and environment blends seamlessly with the internal living areas with stand-out features like curved ceilings and a remarkable curved, red feature wall. To create the curved ceiling, the designer selected conventional 10mm Gyprock® Plasterboard CD, featuring Controlled Density technology and a recessed edge, employed over a large radius.

While the ceilings might work their charm subtly, the red curved wall demands attention without overwhelming you. To achieve this, Gyprock Flexible plasterboard was installed in two layers, allowing the board to move into a tight radius. Lightweight con-structed walls were fixed with Gyprock Superchek 10mm premium plasterboard due to its dense core and heavy duty facing. The green credentials of the recycled formula of the board were also a deciding factor. Gyprock’s Superchek allows for a smooth, even and environment-conscious surface across all walls. This property has won multiple awards, including the prestigious Australian Home of the Year Award at the 2013 HIA-CSR Awards.
