She had most of the school students and staff watching, as various people helped shave her head. Over $850 was raised for blood cancer research. Well done Erin! The Understorey Theatre Hi all! I will be starting after school Drama Classes for children 8-12 years in Evans Head. Next term we will be learning about Improvisation and Stage Craft through drama games. My goal is to create an opportunity for children and young people to engage in the performing arts, creating an understorey of creativity in the community, so young people can create and share their stories. This is not part of my work as Drama Teacher in the High School at Evans River K-12 School, but is a way I can build the performing arts and share my professional skills within the school community. If you are interested please send an email to [email protected] with your preferred days. The class will run 4-5pm. Ajita Cannings
Outdoor Recreation Excursion On Tuesday of Week 8, students from the senior PDHPE class canoed Jerusalem Creek. The students are currently studying Outdoor Recreation unit of work. The day provided perfect conditions as we paddled over the glassy water. Also making use of the smooth water was a massive brown snake which interrupted our paddling rhythm. Inquisitive Wedge-tailed Eagles and White-bellied Sea Eagles circled overhead as the day went on. The students worked together to reach the mouth of the creek, where we stopped for lunch, and then headed upstream to where we could paddle no longer. Josiah Hoyle, 7-12 Teacher

Big Brother Comes to School Shake & Stir Theatre perform George Orwell’s 1984 at Evans Head. Students in Years 9-12 will be attending a performance of George Orwell’s classic dystopian novel 1984 in week 2 term 2 at the Performance Hall. The performance has played at Q-PAC and toured nationally, and is a chilling tale of Orwell’s predicted future which follows Winston Smith as he tries to evade his watchful colleagues, the brutal Thought Police and the omniscient Big Brother. The play also explores the role of love in escaping the oppression of the underclass. The Shake & Stir actors will host a Playbuilding workshop for any students who wish to learn about adapting a novel to the stage, and learn some playmaking skills. Students are to return their notes and $10 for the performance, plus $20 if they wish to attend the workshop, to the office. Ajita Cannings, 7-12 Drama Teacher
Year 5/6 Video Conference During the week, Year 5/6C and 6S participated in a video conference with the State Library of NSW to find out more about 'Migration to Australia' -from the days of first contact through to the twentieth century. In the video conference, they
were joined by Shellharbour Public School and together with the State Library examined a collection of items relating to migration. They explored some of the reasons for this movement of people and learnt a little about some of the people involved and their migrant experience. They got to see a variety of artefacts including journals and tickets dated back to 1882.
