A Note From MPMA
With mail cost increasing annually, MPMA would like to find a way to reduce the number of pieces we
mail. One way we can do this is to e-mail MPMA quarterly newsletters. It would be e-mailed in a PDF file. All you need is an e-mail account
and Adobe Reader Software. You can download the
software for FREE at www.adobe.com. You can either
read the newsletter on your comput-er or print it. If you would like to
receive the newsletter electronically please e-mail Rhonda Wise at
[email protected] to let her know you would like to receive the news-
letter electronically. If you choose to receive the electronic version of the
newsletter, you will no-longer receive a copy in the mail.

As I write this newsletter article, it looks lake old man Winter has finally released his grip and the
warmer weather of Spring is finally upon us. I have heard many reports from member firms that business is rolling right along and the bed bugs don’t seem to be relenting. Unless you have been under a rock dur-ing the Winter, there have been pretty much daily reports regarding the Zika virus. Let’s make sure we are staying up to speed on the latest developments so that we may be able to provide sound science based
facts to Michiganders about the mosquitos that are carrying the virus and stay vigilant regarding the
mosquitos we encounter this year. I would suggest that you visit the NPMA website regularly regarding
updates.
I would also like to report that the Winter Meeting at FireKeepers Casino was a great success.
Congratulations and thanks to John Koval, Smitter Pest Control and Pam Blauvelt, Griffin Pest Solutions for doing a great job on the Winter Meeting. In addition, I want to thank Todd Brown for being the test lure
for his encounter at the meeting. We all had a little fun at his expense.
I am also pleased to report that NPMA Legislative day had the biggest Michigan contingency ever this year. Russ Ives was busy training a bunch of rookies this year including myself, on the ways of the hill and meeting with our Representative and Senators. I want to thank Andy Peterson - North Shore Pest Control, Chuck Bellgraph - Aardvark Pest Management, Jeff Spencer - Griffin Pest Solutions and Joe Kucik- Real Green Systems for making themselves available to attend the meeting. I encourage our members to con-
sider attending this event. There is a lot of training that also takes place before the meetings with our
representatives. I would also suggest that you plan an extra day or two so that you can take in the sights
while you are there.
Speaking of Government Affairs, Scott Faustyn from Karoub and Associates received a call from
Representative Iden’s office and he set up a meeting with us and Rep Iden in regards to HB4520. It’s a Bed Bug Bill that outlines interactions between landlords and tenants regarding the control of bed bugs and who is responsible for what and payment of such services in terms of additional rents charged to the tenants. However, that portion of the bill isn’t our fight. While I sympathize with the property owners, with the costs associated with bed bug control. I offered a couple of things for them to think about and sug-gested that their approach may have counterproductive results and actually exacerbate the bed bug problem. I suggested that they get more proactive on their bed bug problem rather than reactive based upon reporting from tenants. For some tenants, they will report right away to get the problems resolved, however, others will not, due to the fear of being charged additional rents for a wide spread problem be-ing blamed on them. It’s kind of like, pulling over a police officer and asking for a ticket for speeding…… I don’t know anyone that would do that. I also suggested it reference the NPMA Bed Bug Best Practices document and forwarded it to him. As some you may recall a pretty much similar bill was introduced last year in the senate and it never made it out of committee. We will keep an eye on the bill and let you know if it gets legs or not. However, this also shows that Karoub and Associates is a well-respected firm when
the Representatives are calling them to set up meeting with MPMA regarding the bill.
Lastly, on behalf of the Michigan Pest Management Association, I would like to extend our condolences
to the Griffin family for the recent passing of Linden Griffin. As you know, he served our industry and rep-
resented Michigan both in the MPMA along with his service at the national level with NPMA. He will be
missed.

Please join us at the 2017 ACE Workshop hosted by the Michigan Pest
Management Associaon in conjuncon with the 2017 Winter Meeng.
MPMA is excited to announce we’re hosng this workshop to help pest management professionals achieve the Associate Cerfied Entomologist Cerficaon through the Entomological Society of America. We have so many eligible and qualified PMPs throughout the Midwest who have been planning on geng their ACE, but have kept pung it off. Well, here’s your chance.
Why get ACE Cerficaon? Cerficaon can lead to beer visibility, opportunies, and jobs. In today's increasingly complex and high-ly-specialized economy, credenals are so important. Sure, you know you've got the skills to do the job, but how do you convince potenal customers and employers you do? For many career-minded profes-sionals, cerficaon is oen the answer. Learn more at hp://www.entocert.org/ace-cerficaon
Why is the ACE Workshop for me?
MPMA will offer guidance and assistance throughout the applicaon process, suggest study materials, and then host a one day training and proctoring event. We can help with leers of recommendaons,
quesons about the applicaon, creang a resume, etc…
