School Hymn “Soldiers of Christ Arise and put your armour on;

Strong in the strength which God supplies through his eternal son”

These are the opening lines of the School Hymn which was first sung on the 3 February 1959 when The Illawarra Grammar School first opened its doors. It has been sung at every major event since and is an important part of the tradition of the School.

There are actually 12 verses to this great Charles Wesley hymn which was written in 1741 in a style that some might say has long become irrelevant to those living in the 21st Century. Words such as “put your armour on”, “arm you for the fight”, walking in your captain’s sight” and “wrestle and fight and pray” are not commonly found in contemporary Christian music.

Charles Wesley wrote many of his hymns as a means of teaching biblical principles in a way that can be easily remembered. In writing 12 verses to this hymn he must have had a lot on his mind to pass on to others. The three verses that we sing as the School Hymn are actually an amalgamation of sections of a number of the original verses.

In reviewing our version of the hymn, and sifting through the 18th century imagery Charles Wesley used, it is clear that those who chose our hymn believed that we should be continually reminded of the fundamental principles on which the School is built: that Christ is the source of our strength and that it is through our relationship with Him that we become complete.

It is not surprising that our motto, From Strength to Strength, is found in the third verse. These words are found in Psalm 84:7 and are represented in the School Crest in the Latin form ‘de virtute in vertutem’ and through the symbol of the Cedar Tree.

Given the wealth of instruction embedded in the three verses of the School Hymn, I can assure everyone that there are no plans to sing all 12 of Charles Wesley’s original hymn at future School events.

The Founders of the School had a burning desire that students who attended TIGS would come under the influence of the teachings of Jesus Christ. The School Crest, School Motto and the School Hymn were all chosen because they represent this desire and would serve as a constant reminder for the generations that followed.

On Thursday, our School will hold Easter Chapel Services in both the Junior and Senior Schools. We will focus on the sacrificial life, awful death and remarkable resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is our hope that all will understand the liberating and life-changing reality that the resurrection of Jesus Christ enables for all people.

I offer best wishes to all members of the TIGS community for the coming Easter break and hope that we all find time to reflect on the relevance of the truth of the resurrection of Jesus for our own lives.

“At the crack of dawn on Sunday, the women came to the tomb carrying the burial spices they had prepared. They found the entrance stone rolled back from the tomb, so they walked in. But once inside, they couldn’t find the body of the Master Jesus.

They were puzzled, wondering what to make of this.

Then, out of nowhere it seemed, two men, light cascading over them, stood there. The women were awestruck and bowed down in worship. The men said, “Why are you looking for the Living One in a cemetery? He is not here, he is risen.” Luke 24:1-6

Soldiers of Christ, arise and put your armour on,Strong in the strength which God supplies through His eternal Son.Strong in the Lord of hosts, and in His mighty power;Who in the strength of Jesus trusts is more than conqueror.

Stand then in His great might with all His strength endued;and take to arm you for the fight, the weapons of our God.To keep your armour bright attend with constant careStill walking in your Captain’s sight and keeping watch with prayer.

From strength to strength go on; wrestle and fight and pray;Tread all the powers of darkness down and win the well-fought day:Till, having all things done and all your conflicts past,You overcome through Christ alone and stand complete at last.

The Difference Easter Makes Some events have little impact on the world. Others events are so dramatic they can’t help but change the world for good. Easter is one such event. I can think of three ways the events of Easter make a difference for good. Of course, there are many more than these.

First, the events of Easter mean our pasts can be forgiven. That’s good news. We have all done things, said things, or thought things we wish we hadn’t. We all have regrets. We all have guilt. The good news of the Bible is that when we put out trust in Jesus God forgives us all our sins. In fact in Colossians 3.14 we read that God has taken everything that stands over us and condemns us and nailed it to the cross along with Jesus. Because of Easter our pasts can be forgiven.

Second, the events of Easter mean our present problems can be managed. How often do we feel our lives are beyond our control? What we need in life is a power that is greater than our problems. God’s Spirit is that power. God gives his Spirit to all who trust in Jesus. In Ephesians 1.19-20 we read that God’s desire is that the same power which raised Jesus from the dead - God’s Spirit - might be unleashed in our lives to help us manage our problems. God’s Spirit won’t take away our problems but he will help us to manage them more successfully. Because of Easter our present problems can be managed.

Third, the events of Easter mean our future can be secured. Death is the great blight on life. Whether we like to admit it or not death has a stranglehold over us while we live. The promise of the Bible is that those who trust in Jesus have been transferred from death to life. In John 3.16 we read that

God sent his Son into the world so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but have eternal life. Because of Easter our future can be secured.

As far as events go I would think Easter is the greatest. It changes the world for good; it changes my world for good! And I have only said a fraction of what could be said. Have a great Easter celebration!

Senior School A Sense of CommunityAll the literature and research on developing resilience and establishing robust mental health stresses the significance of social cohesion, the importance of developing a sense of community and of service to that community. It is significant within the family group, the School and the wider community. One of the ways that this is developed here at TIGS is through House.

When new students come to TIGS they often comment on how surprised they have been by our students’ commitment to House activities. Commitment to House extends well into post school years: often when ex-students enrol their children their first requirement is that the continuity of House membership is maintained. This can be a problem if Mum and Dad came from different Houses! It is usually settled amicably......... I think.

Term I House Competitions really exemplify TIGS House Spirit. All students were expected to attend the Swimming Carnival and to attend the Cross Country on 4 April. They are expected to participate and represent their House. Every student can contribute to winning House points, no matter what their skill level. Everyone can achieve a Personal Best on the day! Even if students are injured, or are unable to swim or run for some reason, they can still come along, help in the running of the Carnival and in supporting their House until the end of the day. It’s about House not about individuals; it is about ‘we’ and not just ‘me.’

Another BIG EVENT is the Music, Dance and Drama Competition. This is a proud TIGS Tradition that sees every single member of the House take the stage to sing and represent their House in the House Song. Other sections of the program may have evolved and changed over the years but since its beginnings over 30 years ago when it was a whole day devoted solely to

Music alone, there always has been the House Song which also exemplifies that corporate sense of ‘we’ rather than “me.” The introduction of the Dance section to the Competition has seen House Competition hit a never before imagined level of group commitment and dedication. Rehearsals began for this year’s competition at the end of last year!

Please come to the Music, Dance and Drama Showcase on Thursday 11 April to see what your children achieve in the name of House, in their commitment to the School Community and commitment to others by fundraising for the Year 12 Charities: Barnardos and Nganambala School (Emu Point.) it is true service to their community.

Mother’s Day StallIt is that time of year again where the Junior School children have the opportunity to participate in the Fundraiser Mother’s Day Stall. This may seem a long way off but with the School break finishing a week before this event we thought we would get things rolling. Once again, we will pre-purchase a wide range of presents that the children will be able to choose from.

For your child to participate please send in $10.00 for each present they wish to purchase, $5.00 of this will, as always be for school fundraising. Please enclose the money in an envelope which is clearly marked with:

CHILD’S NAME, CLASS AND AMOUNT ENCLOSED

(Remember NO gift is required)

All monies should be sent in to either the Junior School Office (Years K-6) or the Piper Centre (Pre-prep and Prep) before Friday 3 May. It is important that your child’s money is handed into the correct office so that their names are marked off correctly and there are no disappointments on the day.

The Mother’s Day Stall will be held over 2 days:

AICES Hockey Championships Last week the NASSA Girls Hockey U16 team travelled to Bathurst to compete in the AICES carnival. TIGS had 8 girls named in the NASSA team which is a great achievement. They were Teagan Johnston, Chloe Johnston, Maudie Skyring, Brittany Smallhorn, Rachel Craft, Isabella Sandy, Ellie Burnett and Margo Allison. The girls went very close to winning the tournament, however in a very close final against Western Associated Schools went down by one goal. To their credit the girls put in maximum effort right till the end of the game. They were an absolute pleasure to travel with and represented the School in a professional and sportsman like fashion. It was wonderful to then have four TIGS girls selected in the U16 girls AICES Hockey team. Congratulations to: Isabella Sandy, Teagan Johnston, Maudie Skyring and Brittany Smallhorn. We wish them luck next Tuesday as they represent the School at the CIS carnival at Pennant Hills.

NASSA Cricket Thursday 21 MarchThe TIGS Senior and Junior Cricket

Teams competed last Thursday against respective teams from Thomas Hassall Anglican High School. The senior team won the toss and elected to bat only to lose a few early wickets after a good opening spell from Thomas Hassall’s opening bowler. The innings was consolidated through a gritty performance from Teja Cherukuri (Year 10) 30 runs with some timely assistance from Noah Gibbs (Year 9) with 19 runs. Defending a modest team total of 115, Thomas Walker (Year11) (2/21) and Cameron McMillan (Year 9) (2/8) led the way with the ball. Raman Wadhwa (Year 10), Sachin Gasper (Year 10) and Adam Galanti (Year 9) all took one wicket each. Although the fielding was a high standard they ended up going down by two wickets.

With a number of Year 7 students playing their first match for the School it was a great opportunity to initiate and check out the new crop of potential cricketing superstars. The junior team batted first after also winning the crucial toss of the coin. The top order batted magnificently (Noah Butler 86 and Samuel Shalala 61) to construct a very strong team total of 212. Noah Koder (Year 7) (17 runs) and Samuel Okely (Year 7) (9 runs) executed their role (‘swinging from the hip’) in the latter stages of the innings perfectly, displaying some fine array of cricket strokes. With the ball, James Seal (3/10) and Samuel Shalala (3/17) were the standouts with some genuine outswing bowling. The junior team’s unified approach in the second innings resulted in some excellent fielding efforts across the board. They came away with a winner’s grin comfortably defeating Thomas Hassall by 92 runs.
