KOLKATTA METRO PROJECT (EAST WEST METRO PROJECT \CONTRACT UG1)
Client Name: Kolkatta Metro Rail Corporation Ltd
This is Indias first underwater metro tunnel project and approximately 520m of the tunnel will go 20m below Hooghly river
bed. The Kolkata Metro currently operates using one line from Garia Bazar in the south to Dum Dum in the north
(Line 1). Two new lines are proposed to complement the existing Line 1. Line 3 will run from Thakurpukur in the south to
Dakshineshwar in the north and is in the planning stage. The East-West Metro (Line 2) will run from Howrah Maidan in
the west to Bidhannagar in the east. Line 2 will connect with Line 1 at Central Station and will connect with the proposed Line 3
at Sealdah Station
JV with Transtonnelstory Ltd of Russia
EPC contract (design and construction)
Cost of Project 938 Crore
Underground section from Howrah Maidan Station to the western end of Central Station
The Contract UG1 comprises approximately 3.7km of railway tunnels and 3 stations with the following major elements:
Howrah Maiden Station TBM tunnel between Howrah Maiden Station and Howrah Station
(East bound and west bound) Howrah Station TBM tunnel between Howrah Station and Mahakaran Station
(east bound and west bound) under passing the Hooghly River Vent shaft and connecting adits at midway between Howrah and Mahakaran Station Mahakaran Station TBM tunnel between Mahakaran Station and Central Station (by others) This is a very challenging landmark Tunnelling Project of AFCONS in the history of 50years using TBM which passing under water for a few portions (approx. 520m), the water table is at higher level along its entire alignment and heavily congested city where we will be constructing stations.
The TBM tunnels will be constructed between proposed cut and cover stations where no additional temporary shafts are required. The station will be constructed using 30m deep diaphragm wall which will act as the side walls and flat slabs at floor, concourse and roof levels. Top down method is adopted for the construction of stations except at Howrah maidan cross over portion, where it is bottom up technique since it will act as the key portion for TBM operation. The TBM will be lowered at this area and the segment feeding and the muck removal will
also carry out here. The tunneling will be done using tunnel boring machines (TBM
6.25m outer dia). The tunnel lining is made of RCC precast segments. Twin tunnels of
2.775m
internal radius and shell thickness of 275mm will be constructed through the soft soil (clayee) strata throughout the alignment.
The centre to centre distance and the depth below ground level varies along the alignment. The tunnel will cross the Hooghly
River between Howrah station and Mahakaran station.
The project director of this project is Mr. Branko Mischkulnig and the project manager is Mr. Bimal Kumar. The clients consultant
is a consortium formed by the consultants MAUNSELL|AECOM-YEC-CES-EGISRAIL-LHPA and the contractors consultant is W.S.
