Greyhound Monthly Victoria (GMV) magazine is produced

by Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV), the governing body of

greyhound racing in this state.

GRV strongly encourages all Victorian greyhound racing

participants - in particular breeders and trainers - to take the

time to read each issue of GMV to ensure they are across

relevant key issues.

Each edition of GMV aims to provide an overview of key

happenings in relation to Victorian greyhound racing that

occurred during the previous month, as well as promoting

significant and relevant upcoming activities and events.

It is GRV’s goal to have each edition of Greyhound Monthly

CEO’s UpdateFirstly, it’s good news that Victoria is further relaxing its

COVIDSafe Settings, giving us more opportunities to get to the

track, enjoy the racing and catch up with each other. However,

some density restrictions still apply in indoor areas, so I ask you

to please keep following each club’s directions when you visit.

The lifting of interstate travel restrictions is also great to see, and

Victorian trainers are taking advantage of this to enter some of

our best dogs in the heats for the Group 1 Golden Easter Egg at

Wentworth Park in Sydney. Unfortunately, NSW’s severe weather

conditions means some dates for this event have been affected

so if you’re following the fortunes of Victorian racers in the Egg,

check www.thedogs.com.au for the latest details. These weather

conditions are also affecting parts of Victoria, especially around

Gippsland and Otway Coast so please keep checking weather

alerts, take all precautions and stay safe.

In other news, I’d like to thank all participants, clubs and

Greyhound Clubs Victoria for their generous support of the

Royal Children’s Hospital’s Good Friday Appeal by sponsoring

GRV Chair Peita Duncan, Melbourne Storm superstar and

greyhound racing enthusiast Ryan Papenhuyzen, and myself

on Neil’s Wheel on 12 March. Thanks to all your pledges, GRV

raised more than $17,000 for this very worthy cause, well

above the $5,000 target, placing us 7th of 21 on the Neil’s

Wheel’s Leaderboard and once again highlighting our sport’s

commitment to our community.

Turning to our race program, our sport continues to perform

well despite all the challenges of the past year. As at January

2021, total races were up 10% over the previous year while

prizemoney paid out rose by 9.7%. The number of starters and

unique dogs racing were up 10.4% and 4.6% respectively over

the same period while the average field size reached 7.3, slightly

up on the previous year.

And for the week ending 21 March, we hosted four additional

meetings and 54 more races compared to the same week last

year. Like many jurisdictions, including Queensland which has

increased their race program from nine to 11.5 race meetings,

and NSW which has increased from 16 to 21 race meetings per

week, the Victorian race program continues to grow. Growing

the race program is something Victoria has done consistently

since 2007.

As the number of races increases, it’s more important than ever

that we provide the safest possible working environment for

our greyhounds. So, in addition to the $2 million Safe Racing

Program water management package announced last month,

which you can read more about in this issue of the Monthly,

GRV’s Racing Safety and Infrastructure team are currently

carrying out a quarterly review of track diagnostic and injury

data at all Clubs. These discussions with each club also include

topics such as water management, harrowing issues and the

extent of GRV support required. As February was the 12-month

anniversary of current reporting processes, these meetings have

also included a full review of the previous 12 months diagnostic

and injury data and overall track performance as well as the new

reporting processes.

I am pleased to report that construction of the new Traralgon

track remains on schedule to open around September 2021,

with major earthworks now completed, the dam cleaned out

and relined and the sub-base almost finished. The new battery

powered, remote controlled lure that will be used at Traralgon is

now also being trialed at Sandown.

We have an exciting program planned for the coming months

with the Ballarat, Geelong, Warrnambool, Sandown and Bendigo

Cups, the Speed Star series and the new Pink Diamond series

in June. 2021 is shaping up to be a great year for Victorian

greyhound racing - one that we can now enjoy again back at the

track itself.

third in a tidy 30.02sec. It was Jazz Opera’s second victory

from only five starts and her second win from three starts at

The Meadows.

How the race was won: After bombing the start from Box

7, Shima Shine ($1.60F) displayed explosive acceleration to

hit the lead rounding the first turn. The dual G1 winner then

powered away to defeat kennelmate and G2 Cranbourne

Cup winner Jax Bale ($4.40) and Barooga Smoke ($28.80),

who dead-heated for second, by 3.7L in a sizzling 26.90sec

(Best). It was his 32nd win from 52 starts, and the $47,000

first prize spiralled his stakes to $618,283. A week earlier,

he set a new track record (26.79sec) in a heat. He’s also

unbeaten from three Horsham starts and it was his first

country cup win at his fourth attempt!

an exhibition of unadulterated speed. Flying out of Box 8,

Ferdinand Boy ($4.50) accounted for gallant ‘show stealer’

Catch The Thief ($3.60F) by 1.34L, with ‘ultimate professional’

Tiggerlong Tonk ($5.70) a further 1.05L away third in a

scintillating 24.75sec. Winner of the Shepparton Classic in

the lead-up to the Cup series, Ferdinand Boy notched his

16th win from 29 starts and took his prizemoney to $108,880

courtesy of a $47,000 first prize. It was also his sixth win in

seven starts from the ‘pink’ alley, and his fifth win from seven

starts at Shepparton.

Keeping the tracks on trackNew irrigation equipment is being provided to Victorian

greyhound racing clubs by Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV)

as part of a $2 million boost to its Safe Racing Program,

GRV’s Director of Safe Racing and Infrastructure, Scott

Robins, said today.

GRV’s Safe Racing Program is aimed at delivering the best

possible working environment for all greyhounds racing in

Victoria.

The five-year plan, launched in 2019, is focused on a range

of issues that affect track safety. These include the design of

the tracks themselves, related infrastructure such as safety

rails, track cambers, starting boxes, catching pens and lures,

race day management practices and skills and training for

track curators and their teams.

Mr Robins said a crucial component that has a major impact

on safety and consistent racing performance is track surface

quality.

“A track that’s too hard or heavy increases the potential

for injury, so good water management is critical, especially

during the hot summer months,” Mr Robins said.

“To help all Victoria’s clubs ensure their water management

practices meet the required standards, GRV is investing

more than $750,000 in new equipment such as water carts

and tractors for towing them too, so that track curators can

apply water as evenly as possible to prevent the tracks

drying out and compacting. This is just one of the ways in which we are providing a safe workplace for our dogs.”

“Clubs across Victoria are now receiving this new equipment as another Safe Racing initiative to make sure the dogs enjoy a safer run, on consistent tracks that also deliver great racing for everyone.”

Independent Chair for Greyhound Clubs Victoria Brett Jones, CEO of Greyhound Clubs Victoria, has

announced an independent chair has been appointed to GCV, commencing April 1. “After conducting a thorough

recruitment process, I am delighted to announce that the

GCV Delegates have endorsed the Executive’s

recommendation that Mr. Greg Davies be appointed as the

inaugural GCV Independent Chair.

He added "Greg brings vast knowledge and experience in

the areas of governance, leading member-based

organisations and building strong stakeholder relationships."

“Greg has had a distinguished career including various roles

with Victoria Police, performing the role of Secretary (CEO) of

The Police Association and was the inaugural Victorian

Victims of Crime Commissioner.

Milestone story:

Hagrid GrangeEach month we like to recognise the milestones racing

greyhound have reached in Victoria in recognition of their

longevity. This month, it’s ‘hats off’ to Hagrid Grange, who

has just clocked up 167 races, including 100 at Bendigo, and

was rewarded for his achievement with a rug from the club,

and retirement.

Lockwood South trainer Sebastiano Gibilisco has owned

Hagrid Grange (Hesa Felon/Hoofla) for his last 120 starts. His

passion for the dog is palpable. “He’s just a lovely dog, but a

little bit more, he’s really loveable, you know?”

“He has magnificent character. Always ready to go, and a

very strong dog. He’s never had any major injuries, just little

things, so he just comes out, comes in, lovely dog.”

Hagrid turned six in February 2020, but Sebastian reckons

“he could have gone another six months, but I wasn’t going

to risk it, so now he’ll stay with me.”

Hagrid comes from an impressive line, which includes

Australian Cup winner Brett Lee and, on his sire’s side,

Melbourne Cup winner Hallucinate.

The Bendigo Greyhound Racing Club presented the dog

with an impressive rug to mark his century and posted the

event on social media.

when he chalked up his Bendigo century in his

176th & final racetrack appearance at Bendigo on

Wednesday... enjoy your retirement!

Sebastiano make it clear he’s not yet up for the same fate,

however. He still has Garage Sale (Dyna Double One/Molly

Monroe), who is closing in on Hagrid’s impressive numbers

at Bendigo.

Why not, Bazzar?BY PHIL WEIR

The first thing you need to know about Why Not Bazzar is

how to pronounce it. It’s not ‘Bazaar’ – it’s ‘Bazza’. The dog is

named after a mate of trainers Greg and Gail Carter of Devon

Meadows, who happens to be 328 game AFL/VFL veteran

and 1981 Brownlow winner, Barry Round.

The second thing, and probably the most unique, is that

Bazza has recently clocked up 103 races, at the same

track, over the same distance. Cranbourne, 311 metres; and

familiarity hasn’t bred contempt, rather comfort.

Bazza’s record shows he’s experienced eight other regional

tracks since his debut in January 2018, before settling in at

Cranbourne. So why the 311m?

Greg Carter explained “He can’t run much past it. He used to

run at Traralgon over 395 and 315, and Warragul over 400,

but then we took him to The Meadows one day and down

the back he was leading about six or eight length and once

he got to the straight it was like letting a balloon go. He had

just expended his energy. So, in the end, 311 it is.”

For a dog that turned five earlier this month, he’s showing

no signs of slowing down either. “I thought a few weeks ago

it might be about time, but I brought him back and he’s had

five placings since.”

“He’s physically pretty fit. I get him checked ever week, and

he only had a bit of a back muscle problem at one stage, but

time healed that and he’s back in action.”

Greg attributes his longevity on the track to his honesty.

“He’s just a good, honest dog that races against the top each

week. He’s a brilliant beginner who gets on the rails and

scrapes the paint all the way. For a sprinter, he’s got $96,000

on the clock and I think his biggest win was $5000.”

At home, Greg says “Bazza is just a good dog. When I’m out

there cleaning the yards, he just walks beside me. Just does

what he needs to do.”

He’s ruled out breeding from Bazza. “He’s by Fernando Bale,

which is in his favour, but you don’t want to breed from a dog

that’s short-course only.”

When retirement does beckon, Greg says he’ll go to GAP

and be a brilliant pet for someone.

Like his namesake, Why Not Bazzar will no doubt retire a

happy, relaxed, and ‘honest’ champion.

Neil’s Wheel – A dogs Day out Victoria’s Good Friday Appeal, for the Royal Children’s

Hospital, is one of the most popular and emotional annual

events in the state. The ‘unofficial’ launch of the appeal, as

described by its host, is ‘Neil’s Wheel’, when 3AW’s morning

host Neil Mitchell invites organisations to ride the Melbourne

Star Observation Wheel until they raise at least $5,000.

Once again, GRV was invited to take the trip to be elevated

120 metres over the CBD, and once again the target has

been reached, and is being exceeded.

GRV Chair Peita Duncan, CEO Alan Clayton, and GRV

General Manager Louise Martin took to the wheel at 8.40am

and were ‘released’ an hour later when the donations

reached just over $12,000.

Over the course of the proceeding week donations have

been pouring in from every facet of the industry, bringing

Team GRV to a total donation amount of $17,630.

The greyhound racing community is known for its generosity,

over the past three years at Neil’s Wheel alone Team

GRV has raised over $64,000 in donations for the Royal

Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

Team GRV thank each and every person and organisation

that has donated in 2021 and in previous years.

Updated Breeding Exemption Application Form

GRV has undertaken a review of the Breeding Exemption

Application Form and released a new form which includes

Code of Practice requirements. The new form will be

compulsory from 1 June 2021.

The new form replaces the two forms that were previously

used (two-step submission), with a single form to be

completed by both the breeder and their veterinarian (single

submission).

Prize money increase for longer racesPrize money for all Victorian greyhound races over 480

metres and beyond at Provincial and Level 3 race meetings

increased by 15 per cent from 15 March.

GRV CEO Alan Clayton said this will see an extra $300,000

injected into 480m+ distance racing from mid-March through

to the end of this financial year, while it will deliver an extra

$900,000 in prize money to participants annually.

Under the changes we are seeing:

■ Grade 5 races (480m to 594m) at Provincial Level be

worth $1,900 to the winner and a total pool of $2,725.

■ Provincial races from 595m+ will be worth $2,185 to

the winner and a total pool of $3,145.

■ Level 3 racing (Half Stakes/Tier 3) Grade 5 races

(480m to 594m) worth $950 to the winner and a total

pool of $1,365.

■ Level 3 races from 595m+ will be worth $1,100 to the

winner and a total pool of $1,580.

Mr Clayton said the increase is designed encourage our

breeders, trainers and owners to aspire to race beyond

480m+ and support our racing product at these distances.

“We have made these changes permanent after consultation

with key stakeholders such as GOTBA, to underpin our

commitment to longer races and provide our participants

with a clear vision for distance racing into the future,” Mr

Clayton told RSN’s Gareth Hall on 1 March.

“The structure aims to the support our existing ‘Go Distance

Racing’ schedule, which already provides $300,000 annually

in prize money rewards for distance racing.”

“Supporting these monetary incentives will be a review of

some race programming initiatives, with the aim to provide

opportunities for races over longer distances that will

complement the new prize money structure.”

“These could include changes to field sizes required for

distance racing, and changes to the distances of regular

heats and finals at Provincial meetings.”

Two important charities join the chaseBY ANDREW COPLEY

GRV’s 2021 Chase for Charity program was launched today

with exciting news that two charities will join the competition

for the first time.

Louise Martin, GRV’s GM Strategic Communication &

Marketing, announced that McAuley Foundation and Time

2 Talk would be beneficiaries of the competition this year,

along with Ronald McDonald House.

Louise said that like Ronald McDonald House, the two new

charities were close to her heart.

“Danny Frawley was a dear friend. I worked with him at

the Department of Justice through the (AFL) Coaches

Association. We’re working alongside his organisation (Time

2 Talk), which is about men’s mental health, and we’re also

supporting McAuley House, which is about family violence

and helping women and children be safe,” Louise said.

Chase for Charity, part of the Off The Bench radio show

which is heard on 1116 SEN and across various regional radio

stations around Victoria every Saturday morning, sees hosts

Craig Hutchison and Liam Pickering place bets on Victorian

greyhound races each week with all winnings going to

charity.

The program has raised $170,000 for charity since it began

in 2017.

VACCINATIONS FOR GREYHOUNDSThe Code of Practice requires all greyhounds to have a current C5 vaccination. Please speak to your veterinarian

about when your greyhounds are next due for a vaccination and ensure your Kennel Cough vaccine is up to date.

Just a reminder that the vaccination requirements for acceptance into GAP are more specific, so please check with

GRV if you are planning to get a vaccination for this purpose. These requirements are also on the GAP page of this

magazine.

In addition to recording your greyhound’s vaccinations in its Greyhound Record, please also provide GRV with copies

of your vaccination certificates for GRV to upload into FastTrack so there is a permanent record. This is particularly

important if you are considering, or are already, breeding from your greyhound. These vaccination certificates are

required to keep the Pink Card active.

Updated Breeding Exemption Application FormGRV has undertaken a review of the Breeding Exemption

to breed from a female greyhound that is over 8 years of age

and/or already had 3 or 4 litters. GRV has released a new

form which includes Code of Practice requirements. This new

form will be mandatory from 1 June 2021.

used (two-step submission), with a single form to be

completed by both the breeder and their veterinarian

(one-step submission). GRV has informed all greyhound

veterinarians on the database and sent them a copy of the

form.

Greyhound behaviour and racing successThe behaviour of the adult greyhound is affected by its

early experiences with people, other greyhounds, dogs

of other breeds and other animals, as well as a range of

different environments. A greyhound’s ability to confidently

cope and adapt to different situations as it prepares for, and

undertakes, a racing career is key to racing success. A well

socialised greyhound:

■ will be calmer and more relaxed in a learning (rearing,

education and training) environment, as well as in the

race setting;

■ will interact in positive way with other greyhounds

and humans; and

■ will cope better in a variety of environments and

situations; and

■ when it comes to rehoming will recognise other

breeds of dogs, particularly small dogs, as dogs and

not as prey.

This Socialising greyhounds for racing success booklet

provides valuable information on how to expose your

greyhounds to positive experiences through socialisation

and habituation. It talks about what socialisation means for

racing success and what you can do to socialise greyhounds

at any stage of their lifecycle.

Surrendering greyhounds to a poundSurrendering a greyhound to a council pound is a breach of

the Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds

(Code). A council pound can either be a council-run facility or

a facility run by another organisation (including a shelter) that

contracts to the council.

If a participant is considering surrendering a greyhound to

a shelter (i.e., not a volunteer re-homing group) they must

check with that shelter and/or their local council to determine

if that shelter is acting as the contracted pound to their

municipality.

Robert Palmer – VRT Hearing 2 February 2021 – (GAR)

83(2), failed to present the greyhound “Sneakin’ Sally”

free of any prohibited substance ‘Arsenic’ for an event at

Cranbourne on 10 June 2020. Mr Palmer pleaded ‘Guilty’,

The VRT imposed a 6 mths suspension with 4 months

suspended and a $500 fine. Sneakin’ Sally was disqualified

from the event.

Gregory Neocleous – VRT Appeal 2 February 2021 – GAR

69A, the greyhound “Father Phevos” was charged with Fail

To Chase at Sandown on 28 January 2021. Mr Neocleous

pleaded ‘Not Guilty’. The VRT dismissed the appeal.

Stan Bauer – VRT Hearing 3 February 2021 – (GAR)

83(2), failed to present the greyhound “Angie Ling” free of

any prohibited substance ‘Procaine’ for an event at The

Meadows on 26 February 2020. Mr Bauer pleaded ‘Guilty’,

The VRT imposed a of 3 mths suspension wholly suspended

and a $2,000 fine with $1,000 suspended. Angie Ling was

disqualified from the event.

Barry Anderson – VRT Hearing 5 February 2021 – (GAR)

83(1A) & 83(2), failed to present the greyhound “Barellen

Jewel” free of any prohibited substance ‘Ibuprofen’ for an

event at Shepparton on 20 February 2020. Mr Anderson

pleaded ‘Guilty’, The VRT imposed a $1,000 fine, with $500

suspended. Barellen Jewel was disqualified from the event.

Trevor Whitford – VRT Hearing 8 February 2021 – (GAR)

83(1A) & 83(2), failed to present the greyhound “Monaco

Lights” free of any prohibited substance ‘Arsenic’ for an

event at Healesville on 8 May 2020. Mr Whitford pleaded

‘Guilty’, The VRT imposed a 6 mths suspension wholly and a

$500 fine. Monaco Lights was disqualified from the event.

Robert Proctor – VRT Hearing 4 February 2021 – GAR

86(f)(iv) & GAR 86(f)(iii), On 2 December 2019, Mr Proctor

engaged in improper, insulting, or offensive language

towards an employee of the Ballarat Greyhound Racing Club

and towards GRV in the presence of a GRV employee. Mr

Proctor pleaded ‘Not Guilty’. The VRT imposed a $750 fine

on each charge. “Matter was appealed to VCAT, Awaiting

outcome”.

Colin O’Donnell – VRT Hearing 18 February 2021 – GAR

106(1)(c), GAR 106(1)(d), GAR 106(2) & GAR 86(f), On 10

September 2019, Mr O’Donnell failed to provide kennels

constructed in an approved standard, failed to provide

veterinary attention to a greyhound when necessary, and

failed to exercise reasonable care and supervision to prevent

the unnecessary pain and suffering of a greyhound. On 9

September and 4 October 2019, Mr O’Donnell engaged in

and published contemptuous, insulting or offensive language

in relation to the Controlling Body. Mr O’Donnell pleaded

‘Not Guilty’. The VRT imposed a 4-month disqualification

on GAR106(1)(c), a 2-year disqualification on GAR106(1)(d)

and a 3-year disqualification on GAR106(2), to be served

concurrently. Additionally, the VRT imposed a $200 fine on

GAR86(f).

spaces in the pre-entry assessment sessions are booked

through Racing Services during office hours on

All sessions for the next 2 months are listed on this page,

with later dates released each month.

To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound

must:

■ have a current C5 vaccination as per the specific GAP

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS described on this page

given at least 10 days before the pre-entry assessment;

and

■ not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one

month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day

(“wind-down period”). This will increase the likelihood

of your greyhound passing the temperament test. The

‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available

through Racing Services or at: greyhoundcare.grv.org.

GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS

Your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations:

■ Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 wasgiven earlier than 12 months of age); and

■ Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza)within the last 6 months where the Bordetellacomponent is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine.

The simplest method to achieve this is an injectable C3 vaccine plus the standard intra-nasal Kennel Cough vaccine.

Note the GAP vaccination requirements are more specific than a standard injectable C5 vaccination given annually. If you or your veterinarian have any questions on these requirements, please contact GRV.

Note: there is no fee for greyhounds being entered into GAP.

The principles of the GRV Hot Weather Policy also apply to

days when greyhounds are accepted into GAP. For days

when the temperature is forecast to be 32 degrees or above,

entry sessions may be subject to a time change. For days

when the temperature is forecast to be 38 degrees or above,

entry sessions will be cancelled. GRV will notify participants

by phone as soon as possible for all session changes and

cancellations. Wherever possible, GRV will endeavour to

replace cancelled sessions with new sessions in the local

area.

Bookings are essential for all trial sessions conducted at greyhound tracks in Victoria, except Longwood. Bookings can be made in person, by phone or via FastTrack (except Benalla, Horsham, Lang Lang, and Longwood).

Pen trials conducted after race meetings are required to be booked on the day by no later than race 8 via phone.

Satisfactory Trials are conducted following TAB race meetings. Trial sessions are subject to late change and weather conditions.
