Music Rocks

This term we have been learning quite a bit of music theory which has been challenging but interesting.

We participated in a concert at Bandlands in Maylands on Saturday 15th September which was a blast.

We have been practising our numbers for the end of term school assembly that will be held on Tuesday 18th September.

It is fantastic that we have the opportunity to participate in this course.

We at MS1 have been very busy completing our class work as the term is approaching an end. We are well underway completing most of the planned work for this term. As part of our Enterprise lessons the class decided to open a Nail Spa. Together as a class, we decided to call it “Polish Me Pretty”. We open the shop every Wednesday in Session 5. MS1 students have been very dedicated in running the shop. The roles that were given to students were: cashier, nail specialist, usher and customer services person and wellbeing music DJ. Students took their given roles seriously and the project was a huge success. It has been wonderful to see these young minds take on their project sincerely.

This term we also had an opportunity to participate in a Right Track incursion. Right Track is a Public Transport Authority (PTA) program that is all about safer travel which also encourages young passengers to become more responsible for their own safety and to make positive choices. This incursion was aimed to create awareness amongst our students on staying safe in the streets and further educate them on positive roles they can play in their community. The Year 7s participated and enjoyed the incursion.

All MS 1 students participated actively and gave their level best during this year’s Athletics Carnival. Students had a go at all sport activities and it was overall a great day. As we are approaching the end of Term 3 we at MS1 would like to wish all our students and their families a safe holiday.

MS3 have been very busy the last few weeks raising funds for an end of term excursion. The class came up with the idea of making morning tea for the staff for a small donation. Menus and order forms were created and the students went class to class taking orders. The first 2 weeks were big breakfasts served with a freshly made juice, there were lots of hurdles to overcome in preparing a large number of meals at the same time but the students did a great job at pulling it off. The third week we simplified things a little and went with a choice of quiches served with chips and salad. The feedback was great and the hard work by the students paid off as they raised the majority of the money needed for their excursion.

Term three has been a very busy and effective one for SS1. Our students were engaged in a variety of different programs around the school. Individual year 10, 11 and 12 students participated in Workplace Learning, Community Service, and individual transport training. In the classroom, students actively participated in programs targeting the individual needs of each student. Students have shown keen interests in completing their ASDAN modules and enterprise projects. On the 21 of August students participated in the Kailis Bros Leederville all day outing, where they learnt about sustainable fishing and enjoyed fish and chips lunch. Thank you to all parents for your ongoing support throughout the term and wishing you a safe holiday.

Senior School Camp

On Wednesday 12th September 2018 the senior school students from SS1, SS2, SS3, and SS4 attended a Bushrangers camp at the Bickley Outdoor Recreation Camp site. The students, for the first time, were to sleep in tents instead of the usual dormitories to get the full outdoor camping experience. The camp was packed full of activities including Raft Making, Canoeing, Flying Fox, Crate Climbing, Team Building, Damper Making and Search and Rescue (Orienteering) and at the end of each night the staff and students would sit around a fire managed by our fire master Mr T and have sing-a-longs and stories into the night. Each of the students showed fantastic team work skills and supported each other during the activities. Highlights of the camp include the Harry, Shukran and Seth shuffling showcase and the vocal performances from Jedd.

In Term 3, Year 12 students participated in a variety of educational programs that enhanced their academic learning and social behavioural skills.

As a part of the Right Track program our students had an opportunity to meet Jonathan Beninca from TransPerth. TransPerth is concerned with the number of risk behaviours on buses, trains and at stations. In an effort to help children and young people understand the implications of their risk- taking behaviours TransPerth has been working with Jonathan Beninca, who was seriously injured after engaging in at-risk behaviour on a railway line when he was still in his teens. He learnt his lesson the hard way – that risk- taking behaviours can have serious consequences. Jonathan is a regular visitor to schools in Western Australia, talking to students about his experience and helping them understand the consequence of their actions. This in school presentation has been designed to help students understand how the consequence of Jonathan’s actions have impacted on his life and the lives of those around him.

To encourage positive social behaviours and interactive skills, we in SS3 open the classroom up for discussions in Protective Behaviour. The students discussed the concept of personal space and the difference between public and private place. In Social Skills, the students participated in an array of activities that taught teamwork, communication skills, and sportsmanship.

Throughout this year, Year 12 students were working on ASDAN Meal Preparations, E- safety and My Future Choice programs. The students finally achieved their success and completed the ASDAN courses.

On Monday 20th August the Year 12/13 students doing the ASDAN course Wider World visited the Perth Cultural Centre to view the exhibitions at the Perth Art Gallery and partake of some international cuisine at the Carillion International Food Hall. The students found the art gallery a beautiful and interesting place and enjoyed looking a wide range of paintings, ceramics, sculptures and installations. They enjoyed the landscape around the gallery as well and were intrigued by the recreation of a wetlands-

type pond to remind visitors that much of Perth is built on wetlands. After ranging over three floors of the gallery the students were hungry and ready for a meal from any number of countries at the Carillion Food Hall. The day was fine, the students happy and well-behaved and a great time was had by all!

Kalamunda Soccer Carnival

On Tuesday 28th August my class attended a soccer carnival in Forrestfield hosted by Kalamunda Education Support Centre. We played short games of soccer against students from other schools including Kenwick School, West Coast Learning School, Kalamunda School and Leeming ESC. We arrived on the school bus which was driven by Mr Mac. Everyone had fun especially when the rain started. It was wet and wild like a water park. I enjoyed slipping and sliding on the wet grass. Everyone laughed when we all fell over into the wet muddy grass. Jarell, Seth and Aiden received a participation medal for their team work and skills shown on the playing field. We all had a fun day and appreciate and thank Mr Adamson for organising the excursion. By Curtis Melling MS3

New staff to AESC

We would like to welcome Vance Thowless (Mr T) to our HUB as the new Student Support Officer. Mr T has been working with AESC for the past year as an EA. Within that year he has become part of the Student Services HUB doing an awesome job. Mr T has made a huge impact on the students here at AESC. We would to wish Mr T good luck in his new role and once again welcome to the HUB.

Jenni Sorensen (Mrs S) comes to us from Kalamunda Secondary Education Support Centre as a Student Support Officer. Mrs S will be implementing Certificate I in AgriFoods and assisting the team in implementing the School Community Garden. We would like to wish Mrs S luck in her new role and welcome her to our staff.

Congratulations Gabby on becoming our full time permanent Administration Assis-tant. Gabby has worked with us previously, but went off to learn new and exciting skills and has now returned with great innovated ideas. Bushfire Zone Information

Bushfire Zone Register The Department of Education (the Department) is committed to maximising the safety of its students and staff. Armadale ESC has been added to the Bushfire Zone Register. Inclusion on this register means that the school may be required to invoke a pre-emptive closure on a day for which a Catastrophic Fire Danger Rating (FDR) has been declared for the City of Armadale in which our school is located. A Catastrophic FDR means that if a fire starts, it is likely to be uncontrollable, unpredictable and fast moving.

What does this mean for our school? When given advance warning by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) that a Catastrophic FDR has been forecast for a given day, the Deputy Director General, Schools may direct the pre-emptive closure of Armadale ESC. If the school receives such a directive, you will be informed of the possible planned closure by a letter sent home with your child. Parents of students absent on the day this letter is sent home will be contacted by telephone, so please ensure the school has up to date contact details for you.

In the intervening period between the declaration of the pre-emptive closure and the day of planned closure, DFES will keep the Department informed of any change to the FDR forecast for the declared day. The final decision to pre-emptively close the school will be confirmed with the principal no later than 4.30pm on the day before the planned closure. If the forecast changes after that deadline, the closure will stand, regardless of improvements to the weather conditions later in the afternoon of the day before the planned closure or overnight. The intention is to limit confusion or uncertainty for parents and to allow you ample time to make alternative child care arrangements.

Parents will be advised of the confirmation of closure, or its reversal, by a note sent home with your child on the day before the planned closure. Again, parents of students absent on this day will be contacted by telephone.

How will I know when the school is reopening? It is anticipated that the school will typically only be required to close for a single day at a time, however this will depend on the weather. You will receive an SMS text to advise you whether the school will reopen the day after the planned closure, or whether it will remain closed. The school website will contain a notice to advise you of the current status of the school closure and when it is expected to reopen.

I ask that you monitor local media for current information about fire danger ratings and notification of schools reopening. Staying tuned to ABC Local Radio in your locality is advisable. You can also check with DFES on 13 DFES (13 33 37) or www.dfes.wa.gov.au and Emergency WA website: www.emergency.wa.gov.au. Alternatively, you can email me [email protected] or text me on 0455 028 856 or ring Regional Education Office on (08) 9336 9563.

Please contact the school on 9497 6435 if you have any questions about planned closures during the bushfire season.

Kind regards,

Sandra Boyd (Principal)

The course is a bit tricky (The Theory). The work is going fine, it is enjoyable but sometimes a bit boring. The best part is I get to do different jobs nearly every week. I am saving up to go on holiday with my family. There is one job I dislike (counting screws) but I know I have to do it. Traineeships are great you get to meet other people from different schools.

It is quite good pay you get. We cut wood, count screws and pack. I’ve learnt the basics of PPE, manual handling, hazards and safety precautions. I find the paperwork side tiring, but I’m learning heaps. The best part is learning to saw correctly and being able to lift stuff. The worst thing is the presentations and having to speak in front of everyone. I advise people to try this traineeship and see how they go.

Seth and Hayden are both doing School Based Traineeships at GMS Solutions, completing a Certificate II in Warehousing.
