Erin Roe began playing the piano when she was a young girl living on a farm in the tiny Minnesota town of Great Eagle. Her own mother, an experienced pianist, was her first teacher and her main inspiration who paved the way for her to pursue a career as a professional pianist.

“I grew up going to all the musical rehearsals that my mom played for,” Roe recalls. “There are stories about cast members having to babysit my sisters and I while she was in rehearsals.”

As she grew older, Roe somewhat fortuitously found herself following in her mother’s footsteps while finding her passion for music, theatre and piano. “I have found myself, through no real planning, doing exactly what my mom does,” says Roe. “As I’ve taken lessons and worked with more artists, I’ve

really discovered what I like and don’t like. As an adult and as an adult musician, I’m discovering that I love all the stuff she does. She’s a wonderful musician and she’s a master collaborator. She never pressured me and that was just the thing I loved the most.”

Throughout high school, Roe kept playing piano but also stumbled upon opportunities that brought her to love musical theatre. “The summer after my senior year of high school I got to music direct my first musical and that was a ton of fun,” Roe says. “I had no idea what I was doing, but it was such a great time!”

After graduating high school, Roe continued her musical education at St. Olaf College where she studied Piano Performance. “During my time in college, I really got to explore every version of playing the piano,” says Roe. “I got to do a lot of classical stuff

and collaborative work, which is when I fell in love with collaborating and working with other people.”

The collaborative aspects are her favorite part of the process. “Playing piano can be kind of lonely sometimes,” says Roe. “The thing I love more than anything else in the world is working with other artists. Whether it’s with dancers or other musicians, I love sharing that mind meld that happens when you’re making great art. Musical theatre is a great extension of that because it’s everything all put together and that’s my favorite thing.”

Roe initially discovered Trollwood while she was attending St. Olaf with alum and current Vocal Director, Eliza Snortland. “I knew Eliza, our vocal director from my time in college,” says Roe. “We spent two years at St. Olaf together. She’s really great at bringing in

people who love music and art in the same way she does. I’m lucky to have gotten to work with her as much as I have.”

After graduating in 2014, Roe decided to work at Trollwood as the Rehearsal Accompanist. “And that brings us to today,” says Roe, “this is now my 5th year out at Trollwood.”

But what does a rehearsal pianist do? “I’m more or less a jukebox,” says Roe. “I work pretty closely with the orchestra and vocal directors to make sure that I’m creating music that’s reproducible by the orchestra,” says Roe. She also needs to ensure all departments are doing the same things and staying consistent with each other. ”Especially during tech week, we really need to be sure that the kids aren’t on stage doing one thing in rehearsal with me and then something totally different when they have their run at night,” says Roe.

With so many different duties Roe stays busy, but she says the array of activities under her belt is actually something she enjoys most about the job. She says her ability to take on so many different creative responsibilities is a unique opportunity specific to Trollwood.

“I get to wear as many hats as I want. Normally after the tech rehearsal in the afternoon, I would go home and that would be the end of my job for the day. [At Trollwood] I get to come back for the run and I get to listen and take notes for the orchestra and actors, making sure I love the art that is being produced,” says Roe. “I also get to help craft the show in small ways like reconfiguring music for scene changes, underscoring for dialogue, and the bows. I’m really lucky to be able to work with people who are open to all of my ideas. It’s not always like that.”

However, Roe says the pieces of the production she’s most proud of don’t involve her, but the kids at Trollwood. “I’ve never met such hard working kids in my life,” says Roe. “I get tired before they do and I’m supposed to be the professional. It’s really cool, inspiring and rejuvenating to come here every summer to see the kids and the creative team giving 130 percent all the time.”

When she’s not at Trollwood, Roe lives in Minneapolis where she takes on as many music jobs as she can. “I plan a lot of pits for shows and I help run a choir that meets every week” says Roe. “I also teach piano lessons and I occasionally get to music direct shows. I find that I use a lot of those skills in some way or another here at Trollwood.”

After this summer at Trollwood, Roe says she will go back home to Minneapolis and resume her regular life of teaching, rehearsing with choirs, and working with churches. “I drive back on Saturday which is so crazy. The summer always gets shorter and shorter every year,” says Roe.

But whatever life brings and wherever it takes her, she knows for a fact music will always be a part of her life. “I definitely want to continue working in musical theatre. I have found a niche for myself. I didn’t go to college for working with an orchestra or working with singers, but I found a spot where I get to do a little bit of both and I would love to find a way to continue doing that,” says Roe. “The goal is to just keep playing piano until I can’t.”

Totally Trollwood Musical Presents:

july 31 & august 1 at 2pm &7pmfargo north high school

Ugly looks quite a bit different from his darling duckling brothers and sisters. The other animals on the farm are quick to notice and point this out, despite his mother’s protective flapping. Feeling rather foul about himself, the little fowl finds himself on an adventure of self-discovery, all the while unknowingly outwitting a very hungry cat. Along the way, Ugly meets a whole flock of unique characters and finds out being different is not a bad thing to be.

Odds and Ends is a collection of ten minute plays written and directed by Kevin Kennedy. Each piece is a complete play within itself. Ten minute plays usually deal with a single issue and the plot is simple. Because of the shortened time, sets are minimal and the piece is focused on the characters. The goal of a ten minute play is to get the audience to think about a single issue or dilemma in a tightly focused format. Kevin Kennedy has written over 40 ten minute plays.
