Social News

The Social Committee have arranged functions during the summer season which included cele-brating the Queens Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics. We have further functions arranged dur-ing the winter season. The first one was held on the 22nd of September which was a "Swinging 60,s" night. The hot buffet provided by Richard was excellent and the entertainer made the night

go with a "swing". The next function will be a Halloween Dinner Dance on October 27th. The enter-

tainer will be Robi Lee, a Vocalist Guitarist who has been booked for previous functions at

Palmerston. On Saturday 10th November Roy & Janet are holding a Race Night. This is a

very popular event and always good fun. Saturday the 17th of November is the 15th anniversary of the opening of the

Club. To celebrate the occasion arrangements are being made to have an after-noon of bowls followed by a Celebration Dinner. Watch for details that will be posted on the no-

tice board. A Christmas Fayre will be held on Saturday 1st December. A request for volunteers to have stalls will be posted on the notice board. A

snack bar will be provided. We will be holding a New Years Eve Party again which has been a success for the

past two years. Further details of all these events will be posted on the notice board.

Club Christmas Draw.

The sheets for the draw will be displayed in the Club foyer from the beginning of October. Selection of a number is 50p each and as the

saying goes "you have to be in it to win it". Your participation and support helps to raise funds for your Club.

Lunchtime bookings Parties of over ten people wanting to lunch in the restaurant must obtain authorization, from me, by completing a request form which are available at the desk. The maximum number allowed at the present time is 20. It has been noted that this policy is not being honoured and therefore action to control the num-bers will be introduced.

SUMMER LEAGUES 2012

This years summer leagues proved to be very competitive, with one league on a Wednesday finishing with the same number of points, and the shot difference de-ciding the winner. 24 games were played overall, with a break at the first week in August for general maintenance. Club night continued on Friday nights at 7.00p.m. with an average of 36 mem-bers, and this will revert to 8.15p.m. for the winter. Next season it is hoped to have more team places available in case any members wish to revert to indoor bowling from the wet outdoor season. Grateful thanks to those members who undertook the stewards duties during the summer, and kept the centre open for bowling and the usual lunches. Looking forward to the 2013 summer season indoors

Friendly Matches The friendly matches against other clubs are starting for the new season. These form an important part of the Palmerston culture i.e. meeting other clubs, bringing in revenue for the club and catering. Can I ask that members please support the fixtures for the 2012 / 2013 season especially with regard to the away match. The in house friendly matches have always been very successful so can I again ask that you continue to support these noting that the “Ann Broadhurst” trophy match with a Christmas dinner is in December . Thank you

JACKS We have eight nice new shiny jacks, please look after

them. Remember, if the jack is driven out of the rink during a

league game, it is re-spotted. If, on the first cast it is put into the ditch, or out of the rink the opposing skip places the jack, and the lead may move the mat. The player who was due to play first still delivers

the first bowl. IN A MATCH, if the lead puts the jack out of the rink then

the opposing lead delivers the jack. If this also goes out of the rink, then the jack is placed on the "T" and the first to

bowl adjusts the mat.

about a booking please contact me.

Club Night and Mixed Drives. These are open to all, and are ideal for mixing with other members, since teams are drawn at random. New bowlers are always welcome. Club Night is on Friday evening at 8:15 pm. and regular Mixed Drives are on Monday and Friday mornings at 11:30 am. Mixed Drives are also often arranged for Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday afternoon if there is no Friendly Match. For Club Night and specially arranged Mixed Drives check the Notice Boards and enter your name on the sheet posted. For regular Mixed Drives just turn up 15 minutes before the sched-uled start and register with the Drive Steward.

Mobile Phones Just a reminder that the use of mobile phones in the club generally and par-ticularly on the rinks is not permitted. There have been instances lately

where this ruling has been ignored so please remember to turn your phones off especially when you are going to play in a match.

Dress in the

Restaurant Would members and their guests please

note that the dress code when having a

meal in our restaurant is smart casual.

Notes on the leagues

A couple of problems to bring to your attention Late withdrawals of league teams Postponed matches not notified to League Secretary or opposition

Withdrawal of Teams It may help to understand the timeline for setting up the leagues. It is necessary to sort out the teams for the following indoor season leagues before most people disappear at the end of March to play at outdoor clubs. In order to accomplish this, I ask you to register your teams during the month of February. This means that we have March to see which leagues are full and where we will have capacity to accommodate new teams. Further team registrations can be made until end of June. During July the leagues will be run and programmes printed. The programme sheets will be available for collection immediately after the maintenance week shutdown, which is normally the first week in August. If circumstances force a team to withdraw from the league, you must inform the league secretary before maintenance week which gives an opportunity to re-run that league before the programmes are distributed. In exceptional circumstances for late withdrawal, the leagues could be re-run before the league starts and the amended programmes delivered to the team leaders, but this is not possible on only 24 hours notice which actually happened from one team this year. Postponed Matches At the start of each season there are several postponed matches due mostly to holidays and outdoor club tours. If it proves impossible to arrange substitutes, your opponent needs to be informed and arrangements made to postpone and rearrange the match. A form obtainable from the steward needs to be completed which informs the league secretary of the situation. If your team does not turn up to play a league match without informing the opponents, then the match is awarded to the opponent 10:0 and the offending team must pay the total rink fees to a duty steward at the earliest opportunity. The leagues are run for your enjoyment. I hope that this information will help understanding and coopera-tion for the benefit of all.

Bill Jackson

League Secretary.

World Bowls

Two players from Palmerston are members of the Professional Bowls Association and recently competed in a qualifying event at Bournemouth to try to gain one place available for the World Bowls Championship, which is held at Potters and televised annually during January. Bill Jackson won three matches on his way to the quarter finals where he met Gary Fountain from Dolphin IBC (Poole). In the first set Bill lost four on the first end. This must have spurred him into action, as Bill won the next five ends to win the first set. The second set was won comfortably by Gary which meant a three end tie break. Unfortunately Gary narrowly won the first two ends to win the contest. I say unfortunately because the reward for success would have been a match against Russell Gadd who had another successful event by reaching the semi final. (last year, Russell reached the final only losing to Neil Smith who thus qualified for Potters)

Unfortunately is the word again, as Russell also lost to Gary Fountain after winning the first set. (Gary Fountain then lost to Scott Edwards in the final) Bill and Russell teamed up the following day to try to qualify for the World Pairs Champion-ship. They managed to reach the quarter finals. Despite holding three in the last end of the first set with the score at five each, the opposing Skip, Ben Pordage scuppered their hopes with a perfect running last bowl to win the set. The second set was also lost which meant the end of their involvement.

And finally......Please remember to inform the membership secretary Lesley Howell if you change your address or telephone number.....it makes life much easier for everyone..Thanks.
