Academic Award Assembly 2016
Principal’s ColumnAcademic Recognition
In previous issues of Kingy Spirit I have written about our
School Plan, based on a comprehensive process of
community consultation conducted in late 2014 and early
2015. The intention was to identify key aspects of the school
which, if addressed, would support our overall school
purpose of ‘inspiring students to be lifelong learners and
aspirational citizens’.
This year, as part of our planned approach to school
improvement, we have sought to ‘reinvent’ our approach to
acknowledging and celebrating student academic
achievement, with a longer term view of building a culture
where our students continue to show the pride in academic
achievement in high school, that I have observed during my
visits to primary school academic ceremonies over recent
days. Accordingly, we have introduced an evening academic
recognition ceremony for high achieving students in Years 7
to 10. I very much enjoyed attending this ceremony last night
as it proved to be a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the
positive outcomes of our core business. Congratulations to
all students who were acknowledged last night, and a
particular “thank you” to Mrs Wiggins for her outstanding
work in coordinating the event.
In order to ensure we could keep such an event within a
workable timeframe, and accommodate all of our students
and their families in our relatively small hall, the decision
was made to acknowledge students who did not achieve a
‘top three’ result in their subjects at a less formal year
meeting earlier in the week, to which parents were invited. It
is my understanding that some parents may understandably
have felt let down by the lack of formality at these
assemblies. I sincerely apologise for any confusion caused
and would like to assure those concerned parents that we
will certainly take their feedback on board in our evaluation
of the changes we have made, and ensure that our
academic recognition program in 2017 meets community
expectations.
Other School Plan Achievements in 2016
Given the above, I remain proud of our achievements as a
school in implementing improvements which we, as a school
community, have identified as carrying the greatest benefit
for our students. These planned initiatives are made
possible by the additional Gonski funding about which so
much has been debated in our national media.
I am of the very strong view that, given the necessary time
for these planned measures to take their intended effect,
our work together, supported by the additional funding that
NSW schools still have access to, learning outcomes for our
students, as measured in PISA and NAPLAN, will begin to
improve. This is the case not only at Kingscliff High School,
but also at schools across NSW and Australia - needs based
funding to support equitable student learning outcomes
should not be a matter for debate, but should be a ‘given’.
At Kingscliff High School we have worked across the
following areas in 2016:
Encouraging parent and community engagement
by upgrading our website, newsletter and facebook
page, launching our schoolstream ap and working
with our partner primary schools to launch our
quarterly Coastal Learning Community newsletter.
Investigating and trialling a range of different
teaching styles to identify which is best suited to
Tweed Coast students, with a particular focus on
project based self directed learning.
Providing learning extension opportunities in the
creative and performing arts, STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering & Maths), literary analysis,
sports & nutrition and sports leadership.
Teaching students proven ‘best practice’ study
skills.
Supporting and encouraging students to meet
Tweed Coast community behaviour expectations
through our PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning)
and WAVE (We All Value Education) programs.
Supporting student needs through the wealth of
student wellbeing initiatives offered throughout the
year.
While schools ultimately aim to achieve excellent academic
outcomes, an wholistic approach to the development of
lifelong learners and aspirational citizens is the only genuine
and sustainable way in which meaningful academic success
can be achieved. This wholistic work, at which public schools
excel, does not readily translate into NAPLAN and PISA
results in the short term
2016 HSC Results
I am very proud of our HSC results this year. Given that Band
6 results encompass the top 10% of results in each subject,
Band 5 the next 10% and so on down, it is very pleasing to
note that our Year 12 students this year, between them,
achieved 23 Band 6 results and 80 Band 5 results. In
particular, our Band 6 results have grown from 6 in 2014
and 18 in 2015.
Congratulations to all of these high achieving students, their
parents and families, and their teachers who worked with
them throughout their journey. These results reflect the
“pointy end” of our work as a school and they are a credit to
all involved.
Wishing all of our school community a safe, relaxing and
enjoyable festive season and summer break to follow.

Sport Presentation
Our Sports Presentation on Monday 5 December was the
culmination of a hectic year in sport at Kingscliff High. The
presentation recognised the many outstanding
performances of the students throughout the year. These
include the Age Champions from our major carnivals the
North Coast Regional Representatives, NSW CHS
Representatives, Regional winning teams, the Sportsmen
and Women of the year.
This year we had two NSW CHS representatives for hockey,
Ella Fitzpatrick (Under 16s) and Tara Fitzpatrick (Under 18s).
Special awards were presented to Ty Payne for his boxing
(Number 1 in NSW and QLD for 45kg division), Dylan Rhodes
and Noah Pearce (QLD Rowing State Gold medallist), Danni-
Elle Townsend (Bronze Medal World Under 15s Table
Tennis).
The Junior and Senior Sportsman and Sportswoman awards
were hotly contested, with great performances from many
students in each category.
Senior Sportwoman- Tara Fitzpatrick
Junior Sportswoman- Helina Bishop
Senior Sportsman - Oscar Clarke
Junior Sportman - Eoghan Barnes
The Sport Star Award went to Danni-Elle Townsend for her
selection in the Australian U15 Table Tennis team that
competed at the Oceania and World Championships. This is
a great achievement as Danni-Elle is only 13 years old and
to win a medal at the world champions capped a great year.
It has been another wonderful year in sport and hopefully
2017 will be as successful.

Brainstorm Verbal Year 8
It has been an exciting and busy year for
the P&C. Lots of new members have
joined us throughout the year and there
have been significant changes in the
Executive team. Through the profits of our Canteen and
Uniform Shop some of the projects we have funded this year
are $10,000 for a school study program for the benefit of all
students, $30,000 to air condition the library, financial
support for school spectacular and numerous other funding
requests.
We have also moved to online payments for our staff and
suppliers. Shortly we will be introducing an eftpos facility in
our Uniform Shop, which will also be trialled in the Canteen.
We have also extended the Uniform Shop hours in the
holidays and the first week of term to try and reduce the long
line of people wanting to buy uniforms.
We look forward to next year and welcome those who wish
to join us to make our school a better place.
Merry Christmas from the Kingscliff High School P&C.

Mr Simon Byrne
Work Experience Overview
Work Experience was underutilised this year, with very few
students choosing to undertake this learning option. Those
that made the effort to participate found it very useful and
enjoyable.
Outcomes included part time work, school based
apprenticeship, a renewed understanding of pathways to
undertake for study or not to undertake.
A big thank you to all the wonderful businesses that support
this worthwhile initiative. I hope we have more students step
up in 2017 to give workplace learning a go
.
Year 8 Parents and Carers
I would like to thank you for your support in 2016. I will be
moving to Byron High temporarily for 2017 to be closer to my
own children. The students in this year group are a fantastic
bunch of students and I will miss them. Mr Williams from the
HSIE Department will be Year Adviser for Year 9 in 2017.
Again thank you for your support.
Mrs K Todoroska.
Pan Pacific Masters Congratulations to three of our staff members who won
medals when they competed in the Pan Pacific Games on
the Gold Coast. Ms Lorelle Morrissey won a Gold Medal in
the Over 35s Hockey. Ms Deb Shea won a Silver medal in
Division 1 Basketball and Mrs Karen Woodford won a Silver
medal in the 6 kilometres Outrigging Relay and a Bronze
medal in the 6 kilometres Outrigging. A fantastic effort from
all.
Kingscliff Christmas Lights
The very talented Bonnie Masters, Alyssa Mackenzie and
Ebony Walker performing at the switching on the light
ceremony at Kingscliff. Despite the rain, the show went on.
Working Together
On Monday 28 November, a group of Kingscliff High School students presented their
projects for the Working Together Project. The project is a joint initiative between the NSW
Department of Education and the North Coast Primary Health Network.
Our students, along with Tweed River High School developed innovative evidence based
projects that provide individuals, families and the local community with accurate and
current information about substance abuse.
The projects developed included stickers, ribbons, board games, information days for
younger students, informative videos and canvas paintings describing the effects of drugs
and alcohol on the body.
All groups created great resources, taking much care and pride in their work. Thank you to
all students and parents who attended the night. A special thank you to our Kingscliff High
School Kokorek dance group for opening the night.
Staff v’s Students Sporting Challenge
The Student Wellbeing Team held a staff vs students sporting challenge. We would like to thank all the staff and Year 11 students
who participated and helped out in all three sports. Each sport was played with a high level of sportsmanship and a friendly
competitive edge. It was an extremely enjoyable challenge and hope to do it again next year.
The results of the sporting challenges are as followed:
Tuesday 22 November outdoor Volley ball - teachers won in two sets, 21-11 and 21- 14.
Wednesday 23 November Netball - teachers had victory again 23- 9.
Thursday 24 November Indoor Volleyball - teachers won the first set 21- 15, students won the second set 21-17 and teachers
won the third set 17-15.
Therefore, the teachers won the sporting challenge 3-0.
