Chicken Storiesby ELLA & WINSTON WISELY

Hi. My name is Ella Wisely. Just after Valentines Day, I got to take the one week old chickens home. They were so small and fluffy. And now, they’re humongous! They’re almost two weeks from living in the coop full-time! Which makes me think of the weekend in March that my Grandpa, Bill Wisely, was here and built the Wonderland Chicken Coop. It was so fun having all my friends, my brother Winston and my mom and dad to help out. Even my garden teacher, Miss Gabrielle, Principal Wilson and his dog, Maggie were there!

I’m so happy the chickens are going to be at my school. I love all animals! Sometimes on Saturdays, I assist my mom at her veterinary clinic. I usually get the scared pets out of their cages and give them love. Someday, I want to be a veterinarian, but it’s not going to be easy.

I will help take care of the chickens at Wonderland if they get sick or are scared. I can’t wait to see them lay their first egg!

Having the chickens go to peoples’ houses is an important part of having the chickens at Wonderland. Everyone who takes care of them understands how great they are.

Our grandpa built the chicken coop because he is a builder and he wanted us to enjoy learning about taking care of chickens in the city.

I think the campus wants c h i c k e n s because it’s fun to watch them grow.

Dear wise Coyote,

I have been planning my birthday party for two weeks now and it’s a karaoke party. My dilemma is I’m inviting two friends that I have been telling forthe longest time I like classical when I actually like pop music. I acted like I liked classical because I thought they would like me more. Classical won’t even be something we’re singing. What should I say to my friends when they realize I have been a fake the whole time? Will they like my music? I need your help!

– worried Pop- Star

Dear worried Pop- Star,

First of all you don’t need to say much at all except a sincere apology that you told them something that wasn’t true and tell them the truth. They should be flattered that you did it for them and should realize you did it for them.

It seems like you tried hard enough to like what they liked and now it’s their turn to try to like what you like.

Plus, your friendship shouldn’t be decided on you guys liking the same things, like music. It should be that you guys like each other. I suggest not worrying because you did nothing wrong and to have the best birthday party ever!

Sweet Avocado Muffins INGREDIENTS

1 cup all purpose flour3/4 cup whole wheat flour1 teaspoon baking powder1 teaspoon baking soda1/2 teaspoon sea salt1 cup raw sugar2 large eggs1 1/2 cups very ripe avocado, mashed or pureed* 1 tablespoon fresh squeezed lime juice1/2 cup plus 2 tbsp canola oil1 heaping teaspoon vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS

Preheat oven to 350. Line muffin pan with muffin liners, set aside. Sift all dry ingredients together (flour, baking powder, soda and salt), set aside.

Beat sugar and eggs until fluffy; stir in avocado, lime juice, oil and vanilla. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and mix just until combined. Spoon the mixture evenly into prepared pan.

Bake 15 - 20 minutes or until tester (toothpick, fork, etc.) comes out clean. Remove from tin and cool.

If you want a lighter taste and texture, you can cut the amount of avocado back to 1 cup, but no less.

ChibaBy JACKSON GOLD

I picked this restaurant to review for the Coyote Howler, because it is Coach Evan’s favorite sushi restaurant and I didn’t think it was appropriate to review a restaurant that served chicken for this issue. I am also a big fan of sushi, so we decided to give it a try. When we got there, my little brother ordered Ikura (fish eggs) and he gave me a piece. It tasted fresh, little salty, and yummy, kind of reminded me of the ocean. After that I ordered the salmon sushi. It tasted amazing and I was sad to finish it. It made me want to order something else... Chiba restaurant is a nice place to spend with your family, if you love sushi. They have some of the best kinds too! Like uni (sea urchin), octopus, fresh water eel, and of course salmon! Unfortunately the uni wasn’t available, most likely because everyone loves it, and eats it all up! The octopus is amazing, and I suggest eating it all before someone else sees it. The fresh water eel comes with a very delicious sauce. The sauce is also good with avocado rolls. My favorite is the salmon sushi, it is best with a little wasabi. So next time when you go out to sushi, try Chiba restaurant, and you’ll understand why Coach Evan loves it! Make sure to sit at the right sushi bar, with Shig the Master Sushi Chef.

Interview with Mrs. Abu BakirBy SKYE TORRES and SOFIA DAILINGER

where are you from?I lived in Michigan, Louisiana, Massachusetts, and California.

where did you start teaching?I started my teaching career in Glendale, California at Thomas Jefferson El-ementary.

when did you decide you wanted to become a teacher?I was in medical school in Washington D.C. and I had a teacher who made the class so interesting. My teacher said that teaching was also very interesting. She was a teacher of organic chemistry.

How do you like teacher appreciation?I felt like dressing up and just being myself and I was happy that I got flowers and some other gifts. I loved my book of the student appreciation notes.

How do you feel on the first and last day?I always feel nervous on the first day and the students all behave really well on the first day. Most of all, I think that the kids want to know if I really care about them. The last day of school, I am very sad because I have created such a bond and I carry my students in my heart.

what are you going to do in your next career?I want to be a movie actress. If anyone can see me fitting in on a film, please call me or email me so I can audition.

How do you feel about Mr. ossay leaving? We sat at the table the two of us and Mr. Ossay said, “I don’t know if I should leave you or not.” We have worked together for four years. I am sad but also happy for him to make a change to make himself happy.

Interview with Tree PeopleBy GEORGIA DAVIS-BONK

who started the tree People organization? His name was Andy Lipkis and he was only 15 years old at the time. The reason he started Tree People was in 1970 there was so much air-pollution in Los Angeles he was told the forests would die within 20 years unless smog-tolerant plants replaced the dying trees.

How many acres is the park? About forty acres.

are willacre and fryman Canyon Park part of tree People? No, but the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy is a part of Tree People.

Since California is having a drought, how do you keep the trees and plants watered? are there any underground springs that you can redirect to water the plants and trees? No underground springs. We use highway barriers as drip irrigation.

During that last rainfall, our family collected fresh rainwater in clean trashcans and old baby pools we had. we’re still using the collected water to water our plants. Does tree People have rain barrels to collect and recycle the water? Yes!

How many different types of trees do you have on the grounds?Aproximately 900+ native plants and trees live here.

over the years, our family has bought tree Dedications from tree People to give as gifts or honor friends and family that have died. In one years’ time, how many trees are planted just from dedications alone?About 10,000.

I know many native animals live in the canyon. Do you ever run across any injured animals and try to help them? No, but the roots of the trees provide water to animals.

How old do you have to be to work at tree People? To volunteer you can be any age, but if you are under 16, your parent needs to volunteer with you. If you want to work here you have to be at least 16 years old.

Is there any message tree People would like me to take back to the students of wonderland?Yes, we want to help raise awareness of tree care and spread the word about how we can all help them. You can learn more on our website TreeMapLA.org. We also created a little guide you can share that shows the importance of trees to our environment.

ChickensBy AUGUST GOLD

Chickens, chickens never shop at Rite AidChickens, chickens never need a Band Aid

Chickens, chickens do what they doChickens, chickens never say moo

Chickens, chickens fly high in the skiesChickens, chickens don’t like french fries

Chickens, chickens like to have a bedWhat would it be like if a chicken didn’t have a head?

If a chicken is pecking you call Dr. WhoAnd he will see you

The DarkBy DASHIELL LENT

The man stood, wind hitting his pale face. His eyes were like black stones falling into oiled water, on the midst of corrupting with streams of its fluid. All this poor man could think about was why… why would anyone be so cruel as to let him shrivel in the darkness of his own night, let him feel the pain they said he deserved. Put him down, down, down, till no further did the abyss lead. And who did this… the filthy scum of day. The good, the ones who opposed him. He didn’t know why, but he did, however, know that they would not rest until this man of darkness was taken away, that the light would never shimmer or blow out.

But, in this man’s eyes, the light would never have its way, never proceed. It would shimmer. Then, it would be light no more. But dark…

To be continued…

Muppet Most WantedBy THEO TAPLITZ

The Muppets Most Wanted, in my thoughts, is a great movie for kids seven and older and even more fun than the first movie because of all the action.

Like the first movie, it is a musical. It takes place right after the Muppets have won back their studio and, with the persuasion of Dominick Badguy (pronounced Badgee), decide to go on a world tour. Along the way, a mastermind criminal frog named Constanine breaks out of jail, frames Kermit as himself, and takes Kermit’s place in the show in order to carry out his dastardly plan to steal the crown jewels with the help of... Dominick Badguy. Meanwhile, Kermit (believed to be Constantine) is imprisoned in a Russian gulag ruled over by the hilarious Tina Fey who convinces him to help put up a musical review with the prisoners – including the catchy song ‘Working in the Coal Mine’, ‘I Really Need this Job’ from Chorus Line and a ballet number which is extra funny being performed by grizzled men. I won’t spoil it for you by telling the whole story, but trust me it will make you laugh.

The reason I say seven and older is that there are a few scenes in this movie that may be scary for younger kids. Let’s just say when Constantine is mad at people, he likes to bite with metal teeth.

The human actors’ performances were not as broad as they were in the first movie so it made me believe them a little bit more. While not all the songs were as catchy as in the first movie, there were still some really good ones. I’m still singing along to ‘I’m Number One, You’re Number Two’.

So, if you haven’t seen it yet, go watch The Muppets Most Wanted. It’s more fun than being imprisoned in a Russian gulag.

BearsBy DOMENIC SMITH

Bears is a movie about three bears. The momʼs name is Sky and the cubʼs names are Amber and Scout. They are all coming out of a long winterʼs nap and are ready to leave the den. So now they have to go on a big journey across the Alaskan mountains, in search of food. There are many obstacles, like Magnus, Chinnuck, and Takani the wolf. They are the villains of the story, always trying to eat something... or someone! Just as they think that all hope is lost, Sky and her cubs finally find the Golden Pond.

This movie was not only entertaining, it was also educational. Did you know that a bearʼs nose is seven times more powerful than a bloodhoundʼs? Or that a salmon will swim over thirty miles upstream just to lay its eggs?

I enjoyed this movie because I love animals and nature. I really identified with Sky and her boy and girl cubs because my mom is a single mom who also takes care of me and my sister. I would like to recommend this movie to anyone who loves animals and nature. I think itʼs appropriate for ages 5 and up.

Donʼt forget the popcorn!

Girl with a Pearl EarringBy Sascha Tappan

Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer was made in 1665, thats about 349 years ago! It is oil on canvas and has been displayed at Mauritshuis gallery since 1902. As you can most likely tell by the name the most famous part of the painting is the simple pearl earring on the left side off the woman’s face. When Arnoldus Andies des Tombe purchased the painting in 1881, he bought it for only two gold pieces and thirty five cents. This was because the painting was in very poor condition. The once dark green background and indigo on the girl’s scarf had faded away. When des Tombe died the painting was donated and restored at the Mauritshuis gallery. To me the three things that stand out the most in the painting are: Of course the woman’s earrings, half way hidden behind her scarf, her bright red lips, which seem almost open as if she’s going to whisper something to you, and her eyes, staring into an oblivion we will never know of. Girl with a Pearl Earring is an old painting, but it is a most favored one.

This holiday season is about giv-ing and sharing, not only about giv-ing presents, but about giving time and love to your family, friends, and people less fortunate. It’s the experi-ences that count. An experience can be shared and can last forever, that’s the gift I want for the holidays.

No matter if you celebrate Christ-mas or Chanukah we should all join together and celebrate the holidays as a time to have gratitude for our school, homes, food, health, family and friends.

So for the holidays, get your friends and family together and go on a hike, make delicious meals, or do some-thing special that you ordinarily don’t do and most importantly appreciate one another. Happy Holidays!

Selling Ad Space

by JACKSON GOLD

It was hectic getting the first edition of The Howler out on time. Thank you to all the staff for your excellent and hard work. We really appreciate those who bought ad space. I didn’t realize at the time that this would turn out to be the most daunting task in publish-ing a newspaper.

In the first issue, my brother August wrote a very favorable restaurant re-view of Teronni’s on Beverly Blvd. Leonard and I decided that Terroni’s would be our first stop in selling ad space. We confidently went inside the restaurant with a copy of The Howler in hand and showed the review to the person who was seating people. We said we would like to eat lunch and could we please talk to the manager.

We were seated and soon a man, named Cosmo, came to the table with The Howler in his hand and asked what we wanted. I told him we hoped that Terroni’s would purchase an ad

The Jolly Snowman by Lily Skwarczek

that would reach over 400 families in Laurel Canyon. He said that Terroni’s was a chain and they didn’t need to advertise. Leonard said that it was also possible to purchase an ad and claim it as a charitable deduction. Cosmo said Terroni’s didn’t do that either. Then he pointed to the review and said, ‘We don’t cut up the pizza because that’s the way it’s done in Italy!’ and he walked away.

We decided to stay and eat lunch at Terroni’s even though we felt bad that we were treated so poorly, but we didn’t want to be rude.

We went to several other businesses in the area and they thought our news-paper was really nice but they didn’t buy an ad either.

It was a very frustrating experience and Leonard and I both got a taste of what our parents must experience in their jobs.

Hopefully, the next round won’t be as difficult.
