COLLEGE NEWS
CollegePrincipal’sReport
Last Wednesday August 5, I had the pleasure to
attend the Great Lakes Learning Community (GLLC)
Academic Excellence Assembly at Tuncurry Beach
Bowling Club. This is a prestigious event that
celebrates and recognises the efforts of over 180
students from year 3‐12 from our six feeder primary
schools and the three campuses of the college. It was
wonderful to have so many parents and grandparents
joining the students, principals, P&C Presidents the
AECG president and the Director Public Schools on the
day. It is a showcase of not only academic talent, but
also musical talent, with our GLLC Band performing.
Events such as this demonstrate the outstanding
reputation the GLLC has on the North Coast and
within the NSW Department of Education. Thank you
to teaching and non‐teaching staff who helped
organise this celebration for our learning community.
In the coming weeks staff will be submitting Cross
Campus Teaching EOI applications. This is an integral
process of the staffing policy of the college. Staff have
the opportunity to apply to teach a class on another
campus, if available for a two year period. This is a
professional development opportunity which benefits
both staff and students.
Lastly, on behalf of the community, I would like to
wish our year 12 students all the best in their
upcoming Trial HSC examinations

AreyouResilient?
The journey through life is not unlike a roller coaster
ride. The challenges of the uphill climb, growing and
learning new skills, developing problem solving
capabilities, building resilience and gaining an
understanding that there will be times of coasting,
times of speeding out of control and times when you
can revel in your ability to cope. Coping strategies are
learnt from birth and evolve throughout a lifetime.
Every time you face a challenge you use your
resilience to help change what you can and accept
what you cannot. Connectedness is the key. Are you
connected to your family, your school and your
community?
Ways to get more connected – build
friendships, allow people to help you, join
teams and clubs
Be aware of your thoughts – “automatic
thoughts” go through our minds. If a thought
is not helpful then don’t dwell on it
Setting realistic goals – start with small
choices and build to challenges
Trust yourself – “If you believe you can do it,
you can”
Don’t turn every small set back or life
experience into a drama
Look after yourself – Healthy Body Healthy
Mind
Get to really know yourself and your emotions
and just “be in the moment” – Use
Mindfulness practice – not living in the past or
future, purposefully concentrating on what is
happening around you

GreatLakesCollegeAmericanTrip–January2017
Students currently in Years 9, 10 or 11 are reminded
that there is an information night on Tuesday, August
11th in the Tuncurry Site Lecture Theatre for the 2017
trip to the United States. The meeting will start
promptly at 7.00 pm. A representative from
Educational World Travel, who organise the trip, will
be presenting information to students, parents and
carers, answering questions about the trip. Most
importantly, application forms to officially become a
traveller on the trip will also be distributed on the
night.
We ask that only one parent or carer accompany each
student on the night as the MPH will be in use at that
time for the Year 12 Trial HSC examinations and so is
unavailable for use.
Please contact Mr Avery at the Senior Campus for
further information.

NSWStateSchoolSurfingTitles
NSW State School
Surfing Titles were held
at Port Macquarie on
July 15 & 16. Jade Gaul,
Shane Cadden and Rilea
Judson represented the
college during the
event. Everyone surfed
well and competed to
the best of their ability competing against the very
best in NSW. Jade and Shane both made the
repechage round in their respective divisions and then
bowed out. Rilea made it through to semi‐finals and
was placed equal 5th overall in NSW U19 girls division.
SurfingTripofaLifetime
Rilea Judson has won the surfing trip of a lifetime. Last
term Rilea competed at the North Coast Regional
School Surfing Titles and earned herself the highest
individual wave score of any senior competitor on the
day. The wave of 8.6 was in the excellent range and
put Rilea into the final where she ended up placing
second and moving on to the NSW state titles. The
wave also won her a trip to Fiji next year for schoolies
courtesy of Unleashed Travel and Surfing NSW.
Congratulations Rilea.

KnockOutBoysVolleyball2015
The KO Boys volleyball side qualified earlier this year
to the final 16 teams in NSW. We received a
favourable draw which quickly put us into Top 8. Then
we ran into the big boys. Predominantly our shorter
team struggled against Cabramatta High’s taller and
stronger team. We were then relegated to playing off
for positions 5‐8.

Our next match was a fantastic game! Against a taller
team from Cherrbrook High who played a different
style of volleyball, we shone. Our passes improved
and our serving and hitting hit a new high. However,
in a really tight battle, we lost the deciding set 13‐15.
Buoyed by our improved game we then went into
battle against our Hunter Area rivals from Dungog
High, several of whose players represented Hunter
Region with five of our players. However, we did not
regain the standard of the previous match and
finished 8th. We all had fun and the boys enjoyed
catching up with people previously met. Overall, for a
team that has had no match play to speak of, it was a
good placing and they, like me, can be pleased with
their efforts. The stand‐out players for the team were
Ben Whitbread, Harrison Temple, Jarrod Horn and our
hard working specialist passer Jordan James.
The students who represented the College were:‐
Will Moran, Ben Whitbread, Luke Robertson, Jarrod
Horn, Harrison Temple, Sam Whitbread, Jordan
James.

P & C NEWS
Our last meeting in early June was again well
attended. Jennifer Miggins gave a report as a follow
up to the recent Community Forum which was held at
the Forster Campus a couple of months ago.
I have received media releases from the P&C
Federation regarding the inquiry into the closure of
public schools in NSW which has been initiated by the
Greens. This is essentially involving the closure of
small schools and the impact of such closures on local
communities. In addition, there has been an ongoing
call for continued funding for public education to be
the first priority for the government. There currently
remain over 4500 demountable buildings being used
as classrooms throughout the state, which were
originally placed as a ‘temporary’ solution to
increasing enrolment numbers.
I have received notification of a forum to be held in
Port Macquarie on Aug 8th regarding increasing parent
& community engagement within the P&C
association. Finally the P&C AGM is to be held on Aug
22nd in Petersham. These will all be mentioned at out
next routine meeting in early August.
Some issues regarding the menu at our campus
canteens were also raised during the last meeting,
and this will be discussed again during the August
meeting.
Again, thanks to all who are supporting the campus
canteens, both by purchasing the delicious food
available and assisting with volunteering if they can.

Congratulations to Ms Sunrae Baillie for her
sustainability grant application for $1000.00 to go
towards agriculture workings in the top area of the
campus grounds. Brendan Hogan from Interface
presented the cheque on Wednesday July 29, 2015.
The Agriculture Department has a new tractor! This
Tractor is fitted with all the latest safety devices and
will be used for student learning activities while
learning about agriculture.
Congratulations to the Boys and Girls Koori Groups
who danced at the Holy Name School’s NAIDOC
Assembly on Friday July 17. These students proudly
represented the Aboriginal community and the Great
Lakes College. Thank you to the Forster Campus staff
and Aboriginal community members who support
these students.
Congratulations to those students who have
completed the WEA Barista course this week. Apart
from successful coffee making, the students excelled
in their practical and theory test results. The trainers
also commented how fantastic the students were
throughout each course.
The 2016 Year 8‐9 Subject Selection Information Night
held on Tuesday 28th July was well supported by
students and parents. The faculty/course displays
were outstanding and demonstrated the types of
activities involved in each course that students may
select. Many teachers were available on the evening
to answer questions. A reminder to students that
Subject Selection Choice Sheets were due to the
Deputy Principals by Friday July 31.
Education Week “Our Local Heroes” ‐ Forster Campus’
recognition event was combined with our Higher
Achievement Students day with our partner primary
schools. The day had lots of fun and challenging
learning activities which also engaged our Local
Heroes as mentors for the day.
A big THANK YOU to those Heroes for taking the time
to support the students of the Great Lakes Education
Community.

Year 7 had a taste of Rugby Union at Forster Campus
today. Graeme Sonter from Rugby Union Mid North
Coast was on hand to deliver a two hour lesson on the
basics of the game. The boys learnt valuable skills and
tactics about the game and enjoyed playing against
each other. All year 7 and 8 sport classes will enjoy
attaining knowledge of the game throughout this
term.

HearttoHeart(H2H)
For eight days during the last school holidays, (June 29
to the July 7) five students from Forster Campus and
two from the Senior Campus, embarked on an
excursion to Vietnam. This excursion was the final leg
in an art learning journey that started last year when
these students participated in the ‘Heart to Heart’ Art
Program facilitated by Donna Rankin.
While in Vietnam we endeavoured to absorb the
culture, taste the food, meet the people, see the
sights and spend quality time in an orphanage in Vung
Tau for which the Forster community had helped raise
money. This money was used to build a massive
extension to their small one room kitchen that fed
hundreds of children each day with woks on burners
on the floor. Now… they have a three room facility for
eating, cooking, storage and a fully decked out
commercial kitchen which can give industry
experience to the orphans and set them up for future
careers. Their futures are much brighter thanks to the
fundraising of the community which paid for the
renovation and also the cost of the excursion for the
students. The staff and volunteers paid their own way.
The Great Lakes College students also taught art to
the children of the orphanage, spent time with them,
played with them and connected. They compared
their lives to those around them and came home with
a whole new perspective on life in Australia.

TUNCURRY CAMPUS
Principal’sReport
I would like to extend a big welcome back to all
members of our school community as we embark on
the very important second semester of the school
year. I would also like to extend a welcome to the
parents and families of our new students who have
enrolled this term.
We began the semester with an outstanding
Celebration Assembly (these assemblies are held
fortnightly throughout the year). What was on display
was an impressive array of learning across all facets of
school life. An amusing match report on the staff
versus student Touch Football game from the end of
last term, 40 awards for Eisteddfod performances in
Dance and Drama together with an amusing insight
into the Eisteddfod from Adele Brotherton and Cody
Clayton, short films from the Photo and Digital Media
class, 40 awards for the Australian Geography
competition together with a presentation from the
Social Science Faculty and sports awards completed
an excellent and varied program.
There have been some outstanding achievements in
sport recently with the boys netball team advancing
to the finals and the Girls tennis team reaching the
regional semi‐finals in the CHS knockout. I am
particularly pleased with the excellent performance
from students in the Australian Geography
Competition with Year 10 student, Mitchell Books
gaining a high distinction.
At the end of last term, the SRC organised a staff
versus students touch football match and lunchtime
barbeque. I was delighted with the leadership and
planning from the SRC, the great sportsmanship
shown on the day by the players and the excellent
behaviour from the student spectators. There was a
lovely sense of school community and I would like to
thank the SRC and Mrs Williams for their hard work in
making this happen.
Also at the end of last term, the school community
celebrated Naidoc with a school assembly featuring
dancing from both our boys and girls Aboriginal Dance
Groups and presentations to our new Year 7
Aboriginal students. A powerpoint presentation from
Lucy McBride gave an interesting insight into personal
culture and stories. This was followed by workshops
after which students and families enjoyed a barbeque
lunch and kangaroo tail soup prepared by the
students and Mr Thompson. Again I enjoyed the
opportunity to meet with parents and share the
richness of our Aboriginal culture. My thanks to Mrs
Cougle, Karyn Pol and Zane Spark for their hard work
and organisation of the day.
During this term we will be interviewing candidates
for the English/History Head teacher position vacated
by the retirement of Mrs Fran Ballard. Another
member of our executive team, Mrs Sue Macindoe is
also leaving us this term. Mrs Macindoe has been
successful in gaining the position of Principal
Executive Officer in charge of establishing and
coordinating the Specialist Network Centres. Mrs
Macindoe has made an outstanding contribution to
the school supporting many students and their
families and has played a significant role on the school
leadership team. On behalf of the school, I would like
to extend our thanks and best wishes to Mrs
Macindoe.
As a school, we have a busy, action packed semester
ahead. I thank all parents for their continued support
for the school and the excellent partnership we
experience.

Over the last week I have been distributing subject
selection booklets to Year 7 and 8 students for them
to nominate their preferred electives for 2016. I
encourage parents to discuss their child’s preferences
with them. When deciding which electives they would
like to study in 2016, students should take into
consideration their interests, the course fee and
career path.
Once students have returned their preferences, I will
be looking at which electives will be part of the
curriculum. Several factors will assist in determining
the final electives. These include student choice,
breadth of curriculum and available staff. The size of

the year group also determines how many elective
subjects are offered.
I have been extremely pleased with the standard of
uniform this term. Students have certainly listened
and cooperated with following school policy with
regard to the uniform requirements and supplying a
note when not in uniform.
A reminder to parents that, for legal reasons, students
cannot leave a sports venue early unless a parent or
guardian can pick them up. Students who cannot be
picked up at the sports venue must return to school.
And also a reminder that whilst mobile phones are
allowed at school, they are not to be used in the
classroom. Student’s phones will be confiscated by
the classroom teacher and can be collected from the
Deputy Principal at the end of the day.
Finally, congratulations to all the students who
received certificates at the celebration assembly and
the Great Lakes Learning Community ceremony on
Wednesday during Education Week.

BoysNetballOn Wednesday July 22 a bunch of netball misfits got
together to play in the Regional schools state cup
netball competition. Just looking at these enthusiastic
boys in their netball bibs, with their big smiles and
eager netball moves who would have thought that
these students would have outlasted and outplayed
everyone else in the competition. Overall the boys
played some “awesome” netball with great shooting
by Sam Gibson GA and Corey Fletcher GS, extremely
high interceptions from Adam Neal as GD and overall
outstanding play by the whole team. Please ask the
boys what these mean if you see them.
We are now off to the STATE finals in Sydney on

arrived at the Aquarium at 10.15 and had two hours
to enjoy the massive variety of marine life on display.
For many students, this was the first time to see a
Dugong in real life which were a highlight of the trip.
Did you know a Dugong eats 120 kg of Cos lettuce per
day! The Great Barrier Reef coral displays were
another highlight for many students with the variety
of brightly coloured coral and fish species.
The group had a walk across the bridge over the
Darling Harbour Marina to have some lunch and a
walk through the shopping centre.
After lunch we had a walk through the Darling
Harbour Marina where a multitude of luxury boats
were on display ‐ everything from speedboats,
houseboats, luxury motor yachts and racing yachts. It
was a definite eye opener to see just what a $7 million
boat looks like.
The coral reef display was my favourite; I would love
to have a tank like that at home.
Blake Hughes, Year 9
We loved the luxury boats, laying on the sun deck of a
$6 million dollar boat felt great!
Kye Burke & Samuel Hollis, Year 9
The large Great Barrier Reef tank was great; standing
in the walk through area with the see through floor
was the best part of the Aquarium.

FutsalReport
Last term, the U13s, U14s and U16s Boys, as well as
the U16s Girls took part in the Zone Futsal
Championships at Taree Saxby’s Stadium.
Competition for the boys took place on Monday, with
Each team eager to compete after plenty of training
preparation. All three teams were strong in every
game, with team work, communication and positive
encouragement at its highest. All three teams were
successful in progressing to the Regional Futsal
Championships in August. Our U14s Boys took out
Zone Champions for their age group, a massive
achievement that made us all so proud!
Then it was the girls turn on Tuesday. Our U16s team
was a combination of 12‐16 year olds. Most teams
that the girls came up against were all 16 year old
players. Our girls combined well in all games,
highlighting the importance that when the going got
tough, they never dropped their heads but kept
fighting until the end. The girls were unlucky not to
progress through to the Regional titles, finishing third
for the day.
I’d like to thank Miss Buttsworth for her assistance
with the U13 Boys. Her feedback was that the boys
showed why we play Football. To work together,
represent each other with respect and to uphold our
school core values. I’d also like to thank all of the
parents who assisted with transport. Your time is
highly valued and the kids couldn’t have competed
without you.

On June 25 we celebrated NAIDOC at a special
assembly. The theme of NAIDOC 2015 is “We all stand
on Sacred Ground.” Tiarna Barlow and Maddie Baird
talked about the meaning and special significance of
Aboriginal sacred sites and how important they are to
our culture and identity.
The Aboriginal Boys group performed three dances
which were the Welcome Dance, Animal Dance and
The Honey Bee dance. The boys were spectacular and
everyone enjoyed watching them ‘shake a leg.’
Lucy McBride and Madi Duri hosted our special
assembly and they did a fantastic job. Lucy also gave a
presentation about her hometown of Lightening Ridge
and explained what her life was like there. She talked
about her Country and her mob and that she is a
proud Gamilaroi girl. Lucy showed us a DVD about
Bush tucker and medicinal remedies used in her
Country. This was very interesting and extra special as
her grandmother Brenda McBride, was the Elder
talking in the DVD.
Our Year 7 Advisor, Mr Jock Webb, introduced our
new Aboriginal students to our campus and Mrs
Amato presented them with ‘Welcome’ certificate.
Our Aboriginal girls performed the Swan Dance. The
girls gave an amazing performance and we would like
to thank Margie Donnelly from Homebase who taught
the girls the dance and Homebase who also provided
their beautiful costumes.
Special thanks to John Thomson (Head Teacher TAS)
and our Aboriginal students for cooking up some
beautiful foods for us. The Kangaroo Tail Soup was
delicious!
After our assembly, students got to paint their own
boomerangs, play Indigenous games, sample
traditional bush tucker and listen to Dreamtime
stories. Thanks to all the teachers who helped in these
fun activities.

AustralianGeographyCompetition
Earlier this year Geography students from Great Lakes
College Tuncurry Campus tested their geographical
skills and knowledge against students from all around
Australia in the 2015 Australian Geography
Competition.
We have recently received the results and as a faculty
we were very pleased with the levels of student
achievement. There were a number of student
geographers at our school who performed to a very
high level in the Competition this year with five
gaining high distinctions, eight distinctions and six
credits. Over 76, 000 students from 770 schools across
Australia entered the Australian Geography
Competition so the results provide us with an external
benchmark as to how our students are going in
certain aspects of geography.
One of our students in particular achieved
outstanding results. Mitchell Books of year 10
achieved not only a high distinction in a senior
category but also placed in the top 2% of Australia.
Bernard Fitzpatrick, a geographer and the
competition’s national coordinator expressed the
following: ‘The competition plays an important role in
promoting geography to students and the wider
community. Geography is an important subject which
develops a student’s understanding of the spatial and
temporal relationships of people and place. It helps
students appreciate the complex nature of local,
regional and global social, economic, and
environmental interactions’.

Survivor
Last term the Year 8 Survivor elective class set off on
an adventure to work on their skills in an overnight
“wilderness” experience. Everyone was willing and
eager to hike from Elizabeth’s beach, over the
mountain, to Bull’s Paddock. Students had to carry all
of their equipment, food, clothes and sleeping gear
with them. This, in itself, was an arduous task for
some but not for bushranger Ben Hall, who took every
step in his stride and also assisted other students
along the way. We encountered many leeches which
Brock Austin took care of with his sea salt.
Arriving at our destination, students had to set up
their tents and sleeping gear. This too proved
challenging for some especially for those that “forgot”
their tents and tent covers.
Students then had to be ready to prepare and cook
their own food on the Trangias or the BBQs provided.
Most of them did an amazing job.
Night activities included staying warm by the Trangia,
spotlight and a night walk along the beach.
Once in bed the weather set in and it rained quite a
bit over night. Those of us who had come prepared
stayed warm and dry, others, almost floated away,
like Jaxon Oakley.
Day two, with the rain set in, we travelled to Smith’s
Lake for some morning canoeing. Here, Ben Hall and
Jillian Black discovered the importance of water
safety, with their canoe capsizing. They quickly swam
to shore and were saved by the Café staff. The
morning was highly enjoyed by the students and staff,
with races and cruising along the lake.
We were all sad to have to pack up and leave. It was a
great few days enjoyed by all, even with the weather.
Some lessons learned to take away from the trip:
Don’t pack a tent that weighs more than you do and
dump it on the teacher to carry (Thanks Miss Dunk,
you’re a machine)
Make sure you use a tent that has a fly in case of wet
weather.
Always watch where you are walking, as those well lit
sign posts can just appear in front of you!
