Message of the Director

Dear Colleagues and Partners,

This week I attended the 39th Session of the UNESCO General Conference in

Paris France. UNESCO’s General Conference brings together all of the

Organization’s 195 Member States from 30 October to 14 November 2017 which

will determine the Organization’s budget and the direction of its programmes and

activities for the next two years. Several events were organized, such as

UNESCO’s Leaders Forum on the theme of Sustainable Development and

UNESCO’s Role in the Multilateral System along with Ministerial round tables

and plenary political debates where heads of delegations from member states

shared their countries interventions in the field of competences of UNESCO while

welcoming another woman Mme Azoulay to the helm of the organization.

On 10 November 2017, delegates will pay tribute to outgoing Director-General

Irina Bokova. I would like to join others in paying tribute to Ms Irina Bokova as

she has shown the way for other ladies to climb the ladder of success to the very

top of UN agencies. She championed without fear the agenda of building together

with member states a world, which believes and embraces unity in diversity.

Preparation for the regional retreat from 22 to 24 November 2017 are in full

planning. We are looking forward in exchanging views, reviewing activities and

prioritizing interventions to move forward with the next biennium work on SDGs

and Agenda 2063.

On the last quarter of 2017, we are also planning two major events, one to

3

commemorate the International Day to end impunity for crimes against journalists

(13 to 14 November 2017 in Nairobi, Kenya), and the second one, an

intercontinental Education for Sustainable Development technical workshop from

(7 to 9 December 2017) also in Nairobi Kenya.

I look forward to your participation in these events and wish you a fruitful week.
