LIMITED EDITION

DRIVING A RENAULT

SPORT RACING

Ismo Rajamäki was fortunate enough to be nominated the first driver of the limited edition Renault Trucks T High Renault Sport Racing vehicle in a major competition. Read on to find out more about this very special day.

4 OPTIMUM MAGAZINE _ The Renault Trucks Magazine

A real racing enthusiast, Ismo spotted the competition

to recruit a driver for the shoot on Instagram.

On the track, the Renault Trucks

T High Renault Sport Racing

proves to be easy to drive, powerful

and flexible.

’m a great fan of Renault Trucks vehicles and

also a racing enthusiast. I started driving

when I was three years old and, ever since,

driving has been a kind of compulsion.

To such a degree that I managed to turn it

into a full-time occupation. I set up

my own company, International Transport

IsmoRajamäki, in 1995. Among other things,

we specialise in transporting cars, motorcycles

and related equipment to racing circuits all over

Europe. For my part, I have already competed

as a driver in over 100 rallies.

Last May, I found out via Instagram that

Renault Trucks was launching a photo

competition to find the driver to be featured

in an upcoming film about its new limited

edition. Applicants had to send in photos of

themselves and their vehicle in context, as well

as a photo inspired by motor racing.

As I said, I’m a real 100% fan of Renault Trucks.

I’ve driven everything, from the Renault Magnum

right up to the Renault Trucks T, and I’ve never

been disappointed. Since 2016, I’ve been driving

a Renault Trucks T High which I appreciate for

its performance every single day. It combines

reliability, power, comfort and a great feeling

of security... So I jumped at the chance of being

involved in this competition and sent in a photo

of my Renault Trucks T High taken on the

Spa-Francorchamps track in Belgium.

This photo obviously made its point! So I was

very happy to be chosen to drive the new

Renault Trucks T High Renault Sport Racing

vehicle.

A SPECIAL SERIES

Only 99 of these vehicles will be produced, and

this bears the number 1. It’s in “Sirius yellow”,

the colour of the Renault Sport Racing Team and

its Formula 1 cars. It also boasts a number of

chequered details on the fairings symbolising F1

circuits. The rearview mirror casings are black,

like the radiator grille, as well as the diamond,

alternating textured and polished finishes.

As for the hubcaps, these are the same yellow

as the body. All this adds up to a very impressive

exterior appearance, ensuring this vehicle will

not go unnoticed once it gets onto the roads of

Europe. As for the interior, well, it’s incredible.

Every detail evokes the brand’s iconic quality

of build: black leather upholstery with yellow

stitching, like the steering wheel, the berth and

the carpet mats. The interior fittings are also

just as well-designed, featuring a panoramic

dashboard* with its carbon finish and yellow

piping around the air ducts. Even the safety belt

has a yellow sleeve.

DRIVING

It is not only the appearance that makes these

vehicles so special. Once I was out on the circuit,

I was able to discover the Renault Trucks T High

Renault Sport Racing vehicle’s performance. It is

manoeuvrable as well as being both powerful

and versatile thanks to its 520 hp 13 L diesel

engine, coupled to the Optidriver automatic

gearbox which has become a benchmark in my

profession. It generates almost 382 kW and

2,550 NM of torque! And as it is not intended for

competition, those who drive it on the road will

be able to enjoy themselves. It is also equipped

with the 7-inch Roadpad audio entertainment

and navigation system (see page 22). It also

comes with the Fuel Eco+ pack (including

Optivision) and the Protect pack. This is a vehicle

that perfectly combines driving pleasure and

performance.

*This is for left hand drive only.

Ismo had his first experiences of the

Bourg-en-Bresse circuit during the shooting.

The vehicle’s appearance includes all aspects of the brand’s

Formula 1 references.

MEETING

D-DAY

The filming took

place on June 25th

at the Bourg-en-

Bresse circuit in

France, where

I finally discovered

the first vehicle

belonging to this

new limited edition.

I was delighted

with this trip and

particularly proud

of being the first

official driver of the

Renault Trucks

Racing! The day

started with shooting

the clip: I was in the

driving seat and was

followed by the

Megane Renault

Sport. There were

at least fifty takes!

Then, once filming

was completed,

we did the photo

shoot with the

Renault Trucks

T High Renault Sport

Formula 1 car.

It was a really

unforgettable day

for me, combining

the Renault Trucks

NEW GENERATION

ELECTROMOBILITYThis year, Renault Trucks unveiled the second generation of its all-electric vehicles. After the Renault Master Z.E., there will now be the Renault Trucks D and D Wide Z.E.

7OPTIMUM MAGAZINE _ The Renault Trucks Magazine

What characteristics does the

Renault Master Z.E. have?

K. S. — We have replaced the thermal

driveline with an electric equivalent.

Neither the passenger compartment

nor the rear of the vehicle – used for

carrying the cargo – was impacted

by the battery we installed under the

front seat. The payload is the same

as that of the Renault Master Thermal

model, which is however lighter and

only weighs 3.1 t, in comparison

with the 3.5 t for the Renault Master

electric. We can therefore carry out

the same activities, cleaner and

quieter than ever before. We also

replaced the bench seat with

a passenger seat and the spare wheel

with an anti-puncture kit to save

even more space. However, the bench

and spare wheel are still available

as options.

Does the launch of an electric

utility vehicle meet a real

market demand?

Katell Simon, Marketing Manager

LCV and Service Offering — Yes,

because legislation is changing.

Countries, regions and cities are now

all seeking to limit polluting emissions

and improve quality of life in and

around cities. Urban mobility is

therefore a front-line concern: delivery,

rubbish collection and public transport

are all involved. Electric vehicles will

be able to serve areas with limited

access, but also make certain rounds

at night, for example, without

generating noise to disturb residents.

Renault Master Z.E. meets all

these demands. Identical to the

Renault Master Thermal in

appearance, this new model has

lost none of its power or payload.

Drawing upon 10 years of experience under real operating conditions with partner customers, Renault Trucks is unquestionably a pioneerin the field of electro-mobility. The Group is now launching the Renault Master Z.E., an all-electric vehicle.

What is the battery’s actual

range capability?

K. S. — It’s around 120 km.

Average consumption for standard

use is 25 kWh / 100 km. The

Renault Master Z.E. is really a vehicle

devoted to transport in urban and

suburban areas. We know that this

operating range is sufficient for most

of our customers, who cover between

20,000 and 22,000 km a year, which

is around 100 km a day. It is also

important to stress that the operating

range largely depends on driving

conditions: speed, the load carried,

topography and weather conditions.

It takes six hours to recharge the

batteries completely using a purpose

designed charger such as the Wallbox.

This varies according to the type of

charger used and its power. Cities are

installing more and more charging

stations, which is making it easier for

these vehicles to operate efficiently.

What advantages does an

all-electric vehicle offer?

K. S. — Zero noise and zero CO2

emissions when operating.

This means being able to use the

vehicle even when there are traffic

restrictions due to peak pollution for

example. Maintenance is also greatly

reduced. This will only concern

changing air filters, cab filters

and brake pads. Furthermore,

Renault Trucks has decided to provide

a number of safety-related items

of equipment as standard. The radar

and rear view camera, for example,

the wide view anti-blindspot mirror,

the cruise control/speed limiter

and the Z.E. Voice, which warns

pedestrians when the vehicle is

travelling at between 1 and 30 km

an hour. The aim is to give drivers as

much information as possible so that

they can focus all their concentration

on actually driving.

Which models are available

for the Renault Master Z.E.?

K. S. — Two models are on offer this

year. There is a choice of four types

of van, depending on height and

weight, while the cab floor is available

in two versions. The vehicles are

becoming available gradually

because, in parallel with offering this

kind of solution, we are also providing

a comprehensive after-sales service

in France and abroad. This involves

setting up a network of authorised

dealers for the sale and maintenance

of electric vehicles. Meanwhile, the

method of financing depends on each

country: comprehensive rental of the

vehicle and battery, the sale of the

vehicle and rental of the battery,

or sale of the whole vehicle plus

battery.

VERSIONSAvailable in 6 versions,

3 lengths and 2 heights, to meet

all kinds of professional needs.

The battery has a real operating range of 120 km and a charging time of six hours using the specific charger. The four van versions offer a usable volume of 8 to 13 m³ for a payload of 975 to 1,128 kg. Both platform models can carry upto 22 m³ for a payload of 1,355 and 1,377 kg.

UPDATE ON…

ELECTRIC TRUCKS:

THE STATUS IN 2018?

According to Citepa (1), Trucks are responsible for 8% of CO2

emissions (2). Developing electric solutions has, therefore,

become an important field of research and innovation

for manufacturers.

In 2011, Renault Trucks introduced

the Renault Midlum, an all-electric

16-ton vehicle. At that time, it was

one of the largest electric trucks

in the world, carrying up to 5.5 t

of goods and the precursor of other

innovations at Renault Trucks.

In the same year, Renault Trucks

marketed the lighter Renault Maxity

electric. Cleaner and quieter than

most vehicles available, it had

a payload of 2 t, a range of 100 km

and an average speed of up to

90 kph.

Professionals, who now have

to face new requirements and

more demanding constraints,

need these solutions.

Renault Trucks is pursuing its

efforts and, in partnership with

the Delanchy Group (see next

page), is developing an all-electric

vehicle with a refrigerated body

for the delivery of fresh produce.

This vehicle is currently operating

under real working conditions

in Lyon, the city where the brand

was born.

ACCESSIdeal for serving city centres

without emissions or subject

to any restrictions at all times

of the day or night.

well, having worked there before leaving to live

his own professional experiences. Upon his

return, he expanded the branches and upgraded

the fleet, which now operates 300 vehicles. His

primary aim is to guarantee optimal customer

service by taking the company into the future.

Eleven branches now cover the country, with

a focus on technology and vehicle safety, made

possible by a fleet of vehicles no more than four

years old. All the trucks are now fitted with GPS,

but the technological innovations go far beyond

that: vehicles can be checked around the clock

from the company’s PC which manages the

entire fleet’s geolocation in real-time, with

a call centre available for partner companies

to keep them updated on our current deliveries.

Vehicle tracking is therefore ongoing and

traceability guaranteed; quite a new departure

for Chilean carriers.

As for the vehicles, the fleet includes a wide

range of sizes from LCVs to semitrailers.

The 40 Renault Trucks T are exclusively used

for long-distance deliveries. Chilean roads are

managed by operators who must keep them

in good condition. They are therefore not

dangerous. But changes in climate, associated

with the distances travelled, can have a

hile, on the flank of South America,

covers more than 4,000 km from north

to south and features a wide diversity

of climates and very different weather

conditions in different regions. Pipau

Transportes, founded in 1970 in Talca,

is located in one of the country’s most

important economic regions, some 250 km from

the capital. It has now become one of Chile’s most

important transport operators, covering almost

70% of the market. Its portfolio includes several

historical and powerful conglomerates, including

Paris or Falabella, an online trader, which

explains the carrier’s importance, since it is such

an essential link in the chain. More recently,

Pipau Transportes opened up to mid-market

companies such as ABCDIN, La Polar, Easy, CIC

and Conac. Every day, dozens of vehicles leave

their various depots throughout the country,

carrying all kinds of goods. With a workforce

of 700 and over 250 drivers, Pipau Transportes is

the country’s leading national logistics, transport

and retail market carrier.

A 2.0 COMPANY

In 2007, Rodrigo Ahumada, the founder’s son,

took command of the company. He knew it very

significant impact. From one rotation to the next,

trucks travel from the central climate, where

temperatures can reach 45°C in the summer,

to the almost permanent torrential rains in the

Southern regions throughout most of the year.

These constraints call for vehicles that are

strong, safe, powerful and designed to withstand

these climatic extremes, for the sake of their

cargo and drivers.

ON THE ROAD

Transport is a highly competitive sector

in Chile, and several manufacturers approach

the company because of its reputation.

Renault Trucks has always been one of these,

and confidence between us began to build when

we started working with a new importer, Salfa.

Pipau Transportes has now found a genuine

partner, one that listens to their concerns and

service quality requirements. As a result, the

haulier was able to acquire Renault Trucks T

vehicles which perfectly meet its needs. If the

vehicles do not «go up» into the far North, there

is still a vast amount of territory to be covered:

an area of over 2,000 km². Pipau Transportes

makes deliveries in large cities as well as in

remote villages. The return trip from one village

to another can mean each vehicle has to travel

up to 500 km. Monthly spending on fuel is a key

element in the company’s finances, adding up

to some $140,000 a month (almost €120,000

or £107,000). Very close attention is therefore

paid to fuel consumption. This was a factor

which played a major role in the choice of the

Renault Trucks T. It was easy to calculate:

which vehicles on the market offer the best

performance in terms of consumption compared

to the volume of their loads? Which ones are

the most advantageous? The driving comfort

and engine reliability decided the rest.

The Renault Trucks T vehicles are robust and

undemanding in terms of maintenance. This

enables Pipau Transportes to manage in-house

maintenance, servicing and minor body repairs.

Last month, the customer purchased 10 new

Renault Trucks T vehicles, recent additions to its

fleet. Rodrigo Ahumada commented that an

“exciting alliance” is now being created between

the company and its partner, Renault Trucks.

Salfa, the importer, is responsive and

communicative, having offered training sessions

for the drivers, particularly in eco-driving.

Driving comfort, engine reliability... Our drivers travel between 8,000 and 10,000 km per month on average, and they can set out on their assignments with confidence!”

Another advantage spotted by Rodrigo Ahumada.

In 11 years, the company has built its reputation

on the philosophy of putting service first,

with the aid of current technologies. This is

what sets it apart from its competitors. And

Rodrigo Ahumada doesn’t intend to stop there:

Pipau Transportes aims to expand into

neighbouring countries and develop new

business. Its route is clearly mapped out.

can consult their contact list or make

a call, but they can receive calls

or SMS messages on either phone.

The priority given to one of the two

devices can also be changed very

easily via a straightforward menu.

WORKING TO MUSIC

Thanks to a subscription to the Deezer

streaming platform, drivers can

access their music library without

taking their eyes off the road. Roadpad

also allows them to listen to their

favourite radio programmes in DAB +

(Digital Audio Broadcasting) and

thereby benefit from optimal sound

quality. Finally, Roadpad offers easy

access to the weather application,

particularly important on long

journeys, as well as to Google Maps.

The safety of the driver, the load

and other road users has also been

improved. Roadpad helps drivers

under all circumstances by means

of the cameras (with an option of up

to four) providing perfect views of the

vehicle’s sides and back. This makes

driving more comfortable both when

travelling and manoeuvring.

Apowerful navigator,

music player, cameras,

hands-free phone access,

GPS guidance and

more. With Roadpad,

Renault Trucks really has

thought of everything!

And as for security, this is a top

priority, since all the features of this

new embedded wizard can be

accessed via a 7-inch high-resolution

«drag-and-drop» touchscreen. The

driver has plenty of entertainment

too, by having access to the phone

and music streaming options.

MAKING THE DRIVER’S

ASSIGNMENT EASIER

Whatever the driver’s activity, Roadpad

has been designed to simplify

everyday life. It incorporates an

impressively accurate GPS device with

a TomTom navigation system offering

many features, such as the ability to

view an itinerary in 2-D or 3-D and get

real-time traffic condition updates.

Roadpad also adapts to drivers’

lifestyles, offering the capability of

connecting two phones at the same

time, so as to enjoy total hands-free

access to both professional and

personal phones. Drivers do have

his project was launched

to increase the diversity

of our pre-owned vehicles

and to respond swiftly and

efficiently to customers’

transportation requirements,”

explains Pierre-François

Debidour, the director of our Used

Trucks activity.

FLEXIBILITY AND SWIFT

DELIVERY

Pre-owned Trucks are selected,

subjected to over 200 different tests,

processed and reconditioned in the

specialised “Used Trucks Factory”

workshop, an integral part of the

Bourg-en-Bresse production

plant. For almost a year and a half,

customers in France and abroad have

been able to acquire a customised

vehicle offering (configuration and

options) adapted to their activity and

usually available within seven weeks.

“And in order to satisfy customers

who need a solution almost

immediately, we have analysed and

identified their needs so we can offer

a choice of used vehicles ready to go,

available in the Renault Trucks

network,” emphasises Pierre-

François Debidour.

THE SAME INDUSTRIAL PROCESS

AS FOR A NEW VEHICLE

In 2018, almost 400 Trucks will leave

the adaptation facility at Bourg-en-

Bresse, where engineers and

mechanics implement Renault

Trucks’ expertise and manufacturing

methods, thereby ensuring that the

refurbished vehicles can provide

a high level of quality and reliability.

“Whether new or used, the

specifications are the same.

Pre-owned vehicles are examined

by our design office, which specifies

and validates every transformation

or adaptation operation required,

before launching the industrial

process. It isn’t a question of making

new from old, but to transform these

vehicles using only certified Genuine

new parts.”

A CUSTOMISED OFFERING WITH

A MANUFACTURER’S GUARANTEE

Currently, the two most common

adaptations concern transforming

standard Renault Trucks T tractors

into construction-site tractors

(T X-Road) and rigids.

The Renault Trucks T X-Road is fitted

with an 11L 460hp Euro 6 engine and

is available in a 4x2 configuration.

It is equipped with reinforced

bodywork items, such as steel

bumpers, ultra-sturdy steps and

headlamp protection grids. It is also

fitted with 315/80 mixed profile tyres

providing an extra 60 mm of ground

clearance. The Optidriver automated

gearbox’s performance is enhanced

by adding the “off-road” mode and

a manual throttle. The specific design

emphasises its robustness and ability

to operate in difficult conditions for

tasks such as delivering materials

to construction sites.

The same vehicles can also be

transformed into rigids. This involves

removing the cab, powertrain and

suspension so that the side members

can be replaced. This allows us

to give customers the choice of

three different lengths of wheelbase,

plus a wide range of options

providing robustness and flexibility

for subsequent body mounting.

The refurbished used vehicles leaving

the Used Trucks Factory are covered

by a one or two year guarantee,

depending on the country. This

manufacturer’s warranty, which

covers all incidents associated with

the engine, gearbox and drive axles,

are valid in all Renault Trucks sales

and service outlets throughout

Europe. It is combined with

Renault Trucks European assistance,

which operates 24 hours a day,

seven days a week and includes

towing insurance. Furthermore,

each transformation is subject

to an update of the documentation

to ensure that aftersales servicing

will comply with the new conditions.

2019 will see the arrival of new

vehicles from the Used Trucks

Factory, to comply with the changes

in the market and our customers’

evolving needs.

The transformation workshop complies with the same specifications, whether they concern new or used vehicles.

EXCHANGE: RENOVATED

PARTS AND GUARANTEESWith eXchange, Renault Trucks offers fully refurbished spare parts and guarantees

he standard eXchange

consists of replacing worn

or degraded parts with

certified Genuine parts.

For example, an engine or

gearbox as good as new

for a price as much as 50%

lower. “We want to oppose the race

for lower prices which often means

poor quality,» says Mete Büyükakinci,

the Project Remanufacturing

Director at Renault Trucks. With

eXchange, the parts are renovated in

our factories or those of our external

remanufacturers, according to our

specifications and under stringent

operating conditions so that the parts

can deliver performances similar

to the original specifications, but

at a lower cost while still respecting

environmental considerations.”

Furthermore, in addition to saving

money, eXchange also saves energy.

“The production of an eXchange part

consumes 10% of the energy required

to produce a new part.”

A TWO-YEAR QUALITY GUARANTEE

Engine units and components,

gearboxes, braking, clutch, electrical

and electronic circuits, steering

and suspension, cooling, etc.

All of these parts are available

in eXchange versions for all ranges of

Renault Trucks vehicles. “Depending

on its age, an engine can be worth up

to 50% of the entire truck’s value,”

says Mete Büyükakinci. “But if the

customer returns the old one, it is

dismantled, cleaned, repaired or all

the worn and damaged elements are

replaced. We then carry out all the

quality checks and the engine is as

good as new in terms of its

performance and reliability. With

a two-year manufacturer’s warranty,

the eXchange offering is available

throughout Europe and is now

gradually being extended to countries

in the Middle East and Africa. Thanks

to eXchange parts, customers can now

maintain their trucks’ performance,

whatever their age, at a fair price,

in line with the vehicle’s value.”

T

ECONOMICAL

The eXchange parts, totally

renovated and tested

in Renault Trucks’ workshops,

are up to 50% less expensive

than new parts.

ECOLOGICAL

The eXchange parts are ecological,

because manufacturing

them only uses 10%

of the energy required

to manufacture new parts.
