Dear Parents and Carers Welcome to Week 6. I hope you all enjoyed our long weekend with a public holiday for Labour Day. Have you seen the new shade sail next to the school oval? It looks fantastic and will provide a lovely shady seated area for our students around the oval as well make observing our school carnivals and events more comfortable for parents. Thanks to the P&C for coordinating the Shire grant as well as donating funds to make it all possible. FACTION CARNIVAL It was a wonderful display of school spirit and sportsmanship during the Faction Swimming Carnival held on Thursday 23 February for students from Years 4-6. Congratulations to Penguins, the winning faction and to all the championship boys and girls. Thank you to Mrs Alison Charman for her overall coordination of this event. This Thursday we will have our interschool swimming carnival also to be held at Mount Helena swimming pool. I wish all of our school competitors the best of luck. STUDENT COUNCIL FOR 2017 Last week the school announced its school captains and student council representatives. During Monday’s operational assembly in Week 5 thirteen Year 6 students presented their speeches to our staff and students on why they would make a good school captain. Congratulations to Dominic and Dakota who were selected as School Captains for Sawyers Valley Primary School for 2017. Over the last fortnight students from Rooms 4, 5, 6 and 7 have also been part of a class selection process to choose representatives for the Student Council. Congratulations to Rick and Seb from Room 4, Piper and Leah from Room 5, Teagan and Sienna from Room 5 and Jade and Mya from Room 7. These students will join our School Captains to form the Sawyers Valley Primary School Student Council. EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS AND STUDENT SAFETY - EVACUATION DRILL Student safety is paramount to our school and we are committed to ensuring that we are well prepared in the event of an emergency. Last Wednesday our school held an Evacuation Drill to test out our procedures in the event of an emergency. On this occasion we held our drill over a lunch break. A long continuous siren was sounded and all classes and personnel assembled in the ‘Safer Location’ until they heard the ‘all clear’. Staff held a debriefing session following the event to fine-tune roles and responsibilities. MISSION STATEMENT Sawyers Valley Primary School aims to create and foster an environment where students become independent learners, enabling them to take responsible control of their lives and contribute meaningfully to society. STUDENT EXPECTED BEHAVIOUR CODE Last Friday was the deadline for our mascot competition. Thanks you to all our students who entered, either through our Visual Arts classes or as individuals. Our school Behaviour Team will commence choosing finalists over the week but it is a tricky job because there are so many quality entries. Results will be announced in Week 7. On Tuesday the following focus behaviours were introduced to the students as part of our operational assembly. Please talk to your children about our expected behaviours.

SAWYERS VALLEY PRIMARY SCHOOL HEALTH PLAN and HEALTH AND WELLBEING POLICY To support the school’s Health Plan and Health and Well-being Policy, our school newsletter will include a special section each fortnight to pass on tips and ideas to families. These will relate to our school curriculum as well as special events and promotions that occur from time to time. Look out for the section entitled: Sawyers Valley is a Health Promoting School.

P&C EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE On Friday 24 February the P&C Annual General Meeting was held. I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks to the outgoing committee on behalf of our school and thank them for their considerable contribution to our school community.

Congratulations to the newly elected P&C Office Bearers and Executive Team.

I am away from school this week and part of next, attending training. Mr Andrew Johnston will be acting principal in my absence. Kind regards.

Fiona Collopy

Principal

Thank you! The early childhood staff and students

would like to send out a huge thank you

to Mick Trevethan for repairing and

supplying our jumping mat covers. They

look great and the children have been

thoroughly enjoying being able to use them again!

This week’s focus behaviours are:

Be truthful and see our part in every situation.

Say sorry when our words and actions have

hurt others.

Faction Swimming Carnival Years 4-6 On Thursday 23 February our students from years 4 to 6 participated in the annual faction swimming carnival. The weather was superb as were the students! Swimming races can be very challenging, particularly because we don’t get to practise them at school and some students naturally were a bit nervous. However, every student entered the water in at least three events. Overcoming fears plays a big part in developing resiliency and contributing to feelings of high self-worth. It was a joy to watch all swimmers doing their best and supporting and encouraging their peers. Congratulations to Penguins who finished with the highest number of points but only just ahead of Swans with Magpies only slightly behind them. Our champions and runners up on the day were: Champion Runner up Year 4 Mia & Ashleigh (tie) Ellh Maitland Willox Milan

Year 5 Ebonee Teagan & Lilie (tie) Jamie Rocco

Year 6 Katie Dakota Dominic Shane

Thank you again to everyone who was able to help, especially the recorders, judges, starters and

race marshalls. Finally a big thankyou to the P&C and their band of helpers for the yummy sausage

sizzle and the very busy cake and drink stall, and thankyou to all of our busy parents who found time

to donate something to the stall.

Even the pool staff couldn’t resist buying a treat for their morning tea!

I have just dried the last swim ring and volleyball and already I can’t wait till next year.

Interschool Team Selection As announced at the Faction Swimming Carnival, as of 2017 there is a change to the process for

interschool team selection. The interschool team will no longer be selected solely upon the results of

faction carnivals. In line with all the other schools in the HECSA (Hills Education Community Sports

Association), Sawyers Valley will now select competitors for interschool teams based on; sporting

performance during sports classes, performance during sporting activities such as swimming

lessons, showing sportsmanship towards other class members and younger students as well as

results at faction carnivals. If a high performing swimmer or runner is absent for a carnival, if

necessary there will be a run off or a swim off to determine the interschool selection.
