A Message from the SuperintendentDEAR PARENTS,

I am writing this newsletter article in the beginning of August and it will not be sent home for a few weeks. Normally I would write a greeting about the opening of school, the excitement of returning, participating in the traditional welcome back activities, fall sports, and car-rying on the traditions many of us have come to expect with the opening of school. Considering how the last six months have gone, it is hard to predict what will happen in the next year or even the next few weeks. The unknown scares people (it scares me). As parents, we have to make the decision to send our children back to school or have them stay home and learn remotely. Everyone is in a different situation. The school district will follow all guidelines that the New York State Education Department and the Department of Health have given us for students to return in person. We will also provide a remote learning option for students that will not attend in person. Parents should feel comfortable with whatever option they choose for their child. We will continue to offer the best quality education Allegany-Limestone can provide for its students.

Sincerely,Mr. Tony Giannicchi, ALCS Superintendent

Academic Intervention Services/ESEA Title 1 Program: In the event that parents have ques-tions about Academic Intervention Services or the ESEA Title 1 Program, there are established procedures to fol-low. The procedures align with the Allegany-Limestone School Board Policies which advise addressing any issues with the person closest to the concern. In most cases, this would be the teacher. Then the building administrator would address the issue, if needed. If the issue remains unresolved, the building principal will forward the com-pleted written concern to the superintendent. The guide-lines for content and a timeline are available at building offices. ESEA Title I Program, Parent Right to Know: As the parent of a student at Allegany-Limestone Central School District, you have the right to request information regarding the qualifications of your child’s teachers, and if any services are being provided by a teaching assistant, that teaching assistant’s qualifications. For information on either of these, please contact the main office in the building where your child attends school.

Filling the Internet GapsBy Kevin L. Straub, Director of Technology/AP

We are looking forward to the students and staff com-ing back to our newly renovated Middle-High School. Since we will still be doing some remote/distance learn-ing, it is vital for our technology department to be aware of anyone’s extra needs. Our district is very spread out and this creates a gap in internet connectivity in certain areas commonly known as, “dead spots.” It is extremely important for us to know if this is the case for you and your family so we can work on finding a way to meet your educational and technological needs.

Even though we are not back to 100% “normal,” we are still dedicated to providing you with the best educational experience possible. We are still looking to get the eSports team up and going. A lot has happened since we have been away from the school building. More and more schools are interested in eSports and forming teams. BOCES has been very helpful and supportive in the process of bringing the schools together. I believe our eSports team could be up and competing by October.

Everyone here at the school has been looking forward to the return of the staff and students. They bring the buildings to life and make the job fun.

Hello Families of Alle-gany-Limestone!

I am very excited to be joining the Allegany-Lime-stone school community as the new 7th grade math teacher! I look forward to teaching the future 7th grade students and discov-ering their talents and abili-ties. My focus is building a classroom community where students will problem solve together and think creatively to develop a deeper understanding of the curricula. I believe in all students’ ability to learn and flourish in a nurturing classroom environment.

I received a BS in Adolescent Education-Mathematics from SUNY Cortland and an MS in Teaching Students with Disabilities from Pace University. I am certified for both Mathematics and Special Education for grades 7-12. I was born and raised in Westchester NY, and moved to Cuba NY this past January. Personally, I enjoy walking, hiking, reading, listening to podcasts, craft-ing, and crocheting. I am always looking to get involved and I am looking forward to being an active member in the Allegany-Limestone school community.

I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy during this time!

Mr. Ciminesi is now joining ALES as a perma-nent Elementary Teacher. We are excited to have him with us again.

Cortney Linnecke is an English teacher originally from Ashville, NY. She holds two Bachelor of Arts degrees from SUNY Gen-eseo, one in English and another in International Relations. She recently graduated from the Uni-versity at Buffalo with her Master of Education degree in English Adolescent Education. She has

stone School District. No matter where he went, sharing with students the natural world and uncovering its secrets has always been what he enjoyed most. He’s excited not only to share his knowledge with the students of Allegany-Limestone both in the classroom and out, but also to become an enthusiastic member of the community as well. If you see him, never hesitate to say hi!

My name is Alexandra Scalise, and I am so excited to join Allegany-Lime-stone's music department as the new vocal teacher! I am originally from Bemus Point, NY and I attended SUNY Fredonia for my Bachelors and Masters de-grees. I studied voice and piano for over 10 years with several wonderful and talented music teachers in the Chautauqua County area. I have performed in several vocal and musi-cal theater ensembles such as the Fredonia Chamber Choir and as an ensemble mem-ber in the Hillman Opera's production of Mozart's Don Giovanni. I have been active in my community in performing as the vo-calist and percussionist in the Jamestown Municipal Band as well as playing piano and leading congregations in song at Holy Apostles Parish in Jamestown and Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Bemus Point. I look forward to becoming a part of Allegany-Limestone! Go Gators!

My name is Kennedi Wittenrich and I will be teaching Special Educa-tion at Allegany-Lime-stone Elementary School. I am a graduate of SUNY Geneseo, where I majored in Childhood and Special Education. In my free time, I enjoy reading, traveling, and spending time with my family and friends. I am so excited to join Allegany-Limestone Central School and can’t wait to be a part of the community.

previously worked at Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus-BOCES and has also completed supervised teaching placements at Hamburg High School and Lockport High School. She is now excited to join the Allegany-Limestone team and looks forward to meet-ing her students and becoming a member of the community!

Shane Murphy is origi-nally from Fredonia, NY where he was born and raised. At SUNY Fredonia, Shane graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology in 2016. Prior to graduating, Shane found himself participating in greenhouse maintenance and paleolimnological re-search (think dinosaur bones but with diatom shells in lake mud instead). He would also be a strong supporter of positive behavior and health awareness for other young adults on campus.

Directly after graduation, Shane found himself in Maine as an educational ranger in Acadia National Park, ME through the Friends of Acadia Summit Steward Program. In the winter seasons when the park was closed, Shane would work in the genomics lab The Jackson Laboratory where he would help maintain mice colonies and their rare and engineered genomes to aid in various medical research.

A close family member who needed some help brought him back to Fredonia, and this is when Shane decided it was time to become a fully-fledged New York State educator. He attended graduate school at Buffalo State College and earned a Master’s of Science in Education.

After much travel and many occupations, Shane is eager to start his career as a New York State teacher in the Allegany-Lime-

By: Shawn Phinney, Transportation SupervisorThe Allegany-Limestone Central School Transportation Department is actively

preparing to provide school bus services for the 2020-2021 school year. We all know how unique and challenging student learning will be this year. Transportation on school buses will be just as unique and challenging in its' own right.

Here are a few things to expect this September:• Bus routes will be very different including pick-up and drop off times of

the bus arriving at your home (different bus numbers or animal designators). When school buses reach maximum allowable student capacity, the bus will report directly to school. Students not picked up on that route will have to wait for another available bus or the return of the regular bus. Pick up times will vary daily due to ridership, bus carrying capacities and staffing shortages.

• Parents/Guardians will be strongly encouraged to self-transport to mini-mize the number of students on school buses and to help stagger arrival and departure times at school. Parents/Guardians are asked to verify student body temperatures before leaving home. Avoid sending students with elevated tem-peratures to bus stops or school. Student body temperatures will be evaluated again before entering school.

• Masks or nose & mouth coverings will be required at bus stops, on the bus and whenever exiting or changing buses.

• Reduced student capacity. Only 1 student per seat (household family members being the only exception).

• Multiple trips may be required to allow a single student per seat.

• Students will go directly to the furthest back, open seat. • Unloading procedures will remain the same. Students remain in their seats

until the students in front are 6+ feet down the bus isle.

Health and Safety is priority #1 for everyone. Students being out at bus stops, visible to drivers is just as important.

2020-21 TRANSPORTATION INFORMATIONA Message fromthe ALES Principal:By Megan Joanora

Now is the time for the growing excitement around the new school year. This year there is probably more than normal uncertainty and anxiety. We all know it will be a different year and it will look like no other school year that we have known. Even though knowing it will be different is im-portant, it is equally important to shift our focus from the unknown and unpredictable to what we know is always good to continually learn and practice. I would like to challenge everyone at ALES to focus on and practice some essential habits that will be good no matter what trying time we are in.

I CHALLENGE US TO WORK TOGETHER THIS YEAR TO:

1. Be curious – Learn about each other and the world.

2. Be conscious - Set goals and get to work achieving them.

3. Be resilient – Overcome challenges that are brought our way.

4. Be sociable – Practice new and old ways of communicating.

5. Be aware – Reflect on ourselves and take care of us.

6. Be creative –Inspire others around us and have fun.

7. Be empathetic – Appreciate and understand others and put ourselves in other people’s shoes.

8. Have integrity – Know and live through our values.

If we can meet the challenge together, if we can work on these essential habits together, ALES students and families will be able to continue being Gator Strong. We will find suc-cess even during a world pandemic. We will be okay together and we will rock this school year. So, let us prepare to give the 2020-2021 school year our best. Let’s get started!

On Monday, June 8, both Mrs. Luce and Mrs. Callen, co-advisors for National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), visited 24 students and their families to induct them into NJHS. Students were selected for this society based on 5 criteria: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character, and Citizen-ship. Mrs. Callen explained, "This society not only emphasizes good grades, but more importantly, strong character and service." Throughout the year, NJHS members will be

expected to participate in different volunteer and service activities that help to give back to our community.

Typically, there is an induction ceremony held at the school; however, our unique dis-tance learning environment did not allow for that. Mrs. Luce explained, "It was important for us to still take the time to recognize these students in person," so both Mrs. Callen and Mrs. Luce hit the road and delivered certifi-cates and cookies to each student. Cookies

were made by a mom of a current NJHS mom, Kara Stoever. Additionally, students were asked to recite the NJHS pledge along with their co-advisors.

It was a wonderful day and great to see all of the students! We would like to extend a "Congratulations!" to these students! Keep an ear out next year to learn how you can become a member of NJHS, too!

Congratulations to the 2020 National Junior Honor Society Inductees!

NYS Requirements and Changes for Health Screenings/ImmunizationsAs summer is quickly coming to an end

we are looking forward to the 2020-2021 school year in the Middle-High School and Elementary Nursing Office. There have been a few changes made in New York State concerning health examinations, screening requirements, and immunizations.

• Health Examination: New York State requires a current physical for all students entering the school district for the first time and when entering Pre-K or KDG, 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, and 11th grade. A copy of the health examination must be provided to the school as soon as possible.

• Health Screenings: Per regulation, vi-sion and hearing screenings will be required at school in grades Pre-K or KDG, 1, 3, 5, 7, and 11. Scoliosis screenings will be required for girls in grades 5 and 7 and for boys in grade 9. You will be notified of any abnormal findings.

• Meningitis Vaccine: As of July 2018, students entering Grade 7, 8, 9 must have 1 dose of meningococcal vaccine. Students entering Grade 12 must have either 2 doses of meningococcal vaccine, or 1 dose if given after age 16.

Thank you for working with us to keep

all of our students healthy!

STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER:Halley Glover, one of our HS Band flute players,

went above and beyond this 4th of July and participated in an opportunity which allowed her to perform with the United States Marine Band (virtually), in a collage per-formance, which featured 330 students from across the country. It was called The Stars and Stripes Together: A Virtual Patriotic Play Along. She had to perform and sub-mit her video of "The Stars and Stripes Forever" weeks ago to be able to be considered for this performance. If you would like to see a video of this performance, go you Youtube and search for: The Stars and Stripes Together: A Virtual Patriotic Play Along. Halley scrolls in from the bottom right side of the screen nicely at 55 seconds in. Bravo on representing ALCS proudly, Halley!

The abrupt end to the school year prevented Academic Boosters Club (ABC) from hosting traditional events like staff appreciation day and the honor roll ice cream social.

Thankfully, not even a global pandemic could get in the way of us awarding our annual scholarships and honor roll pins. In June, 15 graduating ABC members received one-time scholarships while 81 seniors received pins recognizing their hard work for achieving honor roll all four years of high school.

THIS YEAR’S SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS ARE:• $300 winners: Madison Smith, Ronald Jakubczyk

and Shilpa Thandla.• $150 Winners: Mikayla King, Nicole Marra, Kaitlyn Higby,

Allyson Youngs, Molly McClelland, Mychal Berlinski, Chloee LaCroix, Griffin Klice, Sean Campbell, Shane McMullan, Gustave Napoleon and Jordanne Youngs.

Uncertainty still looms as the new school approaches. At the time this story is being written, we are unsure what the year will look like. With that in mind, ABC members are hoping to move forward with our traditional activities like the fall academic pin ceremony and donut receptions for honor roll students, but we also understand that may not be possible. Rest assured we will recognize the hard work of our Gators in some way.
