BAND-AID FOR A BROKEN LEG - Damien Brown

Most readers will be familiar with the organization Medecin Sans Frontieres and the magnificent work they do all over the trouble spots of the world. It was founded in Paris in 1971 with the idea of going to the world’s often neglected trouble spots to provide care for people in need, whatever the cause…war, flood, fire, famine, epidemics of disease which strike impoverished communities, anywhere and anytime. It is a non-profit organisation, sourced in the pri-vately in the main, not by massive charity organisations who seem to spend a great deal of their income on expen-sive appeals, functions and publicity. M.S.F. bends over backwards to remain free of political and/or religious influ-ences, specially the United Nations, in order that they can function independently and not be accused of any form of bias, and just get on with their work. The organisation was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999, and rightly so. M.S.F. is staffed by volunteers [about 3000] in any year. Doctors and nurses from many different disciplines de-pending on the project requirements, physios, O.T’s, driv-ers, administrators, dieticians all volunteer for these jobs, and are as well informed as can be of the situations con-fronting them. This is the story of Damien Brown, a young Australian medical graduate who finds his first M.S.F posting is to a tiny settlement of mud huts in Mavinga, in the wilds of An-gola. Here he finds life to be a light-years away from the luxuries of a modern western hospital. Many of the pa-tients are suffering from the effects of malnutrition, diar-rhoea, chest infections; simple to treat but not high on the list of cases in Western medicine. He speaks no Angolan and finds it difficult when it comes to taking histories. The local staff, many of whom are working for M.S.F and gradu-ally come to accept this young Australian. There are heart-rending accounts of specific cases as Dr. Brown traverses Africa, going to Sudan and wherever he is sent. The object it to treat people where needed and to assist the staff, many of whom are highly skilled, to manage the little hospi-tals with occasional assistance. The book is written with calm and clarity and not as do many such accounts, sensationalize the horror and suffer-ing borne in Third World countries. Of course he gets sick, fed up with the lack of female company, and in the end wisely recognizes the fact that he is becoming burnt out. I urge you to read this book. It is not a sob story but it evokes sensation of wanting to help in any way. If you can’t volunteer, take the time to look at the web site Medecin Sans Frontieres any see if you can find a small donation. I’ll be surprised if you don’t!

Marg Whibley.

BUSHFIRE READY

The start to a new bushfire season is nearly upon us and it is time to start thinking of what we need to do to prepare. We cannot escape the fact that we live in a bushfire prone environment. Bushfires will happen but we can reduce their impact by being Bushfire Ready. It is everyone’s responsibility to be adequately prepared for, and know what to do, in the event of a bushfire.

Fuel management is a key part of being Bushfire Ready. If we manage the fuel we improve the chances of controlling the intensity of a bushfire. As a component of this, Council will be conducting house/block inspections in the last week of October.

To ensure compliance in this area, you should clear your property of all flammable material, including undergrowth. Residents who do not clear their prop-erties and keep them maintained throughout sum-mer may receive fines. We also urge you to be-come Bushfire Ready by developing a Bushfire Ac-tion Plan in consultation with the SA Country Fire Service.

Should you wish to discuss any of these matters further please contact Council’s General Inspector Michael Wilkin on 8768 2003 or 0429 799 614.

Sponsors for our first day were Robe Seafood and Take-away and also Sails- many thanks to them. President Mr. M.Giles gave a brief welcome to all and introduced Jenny Waugh from Bowls S.A. to present badges to some of our members. Recipi-ents of Super Veteran badges were Bet Allsop and Necia Hunt – congratulations girls. Their list of personal achievements listed far too many for me to list and I don`t think there is enough pages in the paper, and not to be left out of things, also Sid Kirkland. Congratulations Sid. Mayor Peter Riseley declared the rinks open and singles champions Vic Dawson and Nesla Boundy bowled the first bowls to open the season. The weather was kind to us with sunny skies and little wind. First wrong bias for the season was a little surprising. It went to I. Bruce. Thanks for that Ian. Baxter was spotted playing with some pink dimpled bowls – don’t think that is a guys colour is it? After the games, everyone gathered for a BBQ tea. A big crowd – almost standing room only – was great to see. Thanks to everyone who contributed towards such a feast, and to all the volun-teers who put their time and efforts in to finishing off the grounds. Congratulations to all the winners. Winners Skip M.
