2017 SCHOOL CAPTAINS Our 2017 School Captains were announced at assembly
on Monday. After a rigorous election process, including an
interview with both Karen ter Haar and myself, it is with
great pleasure that I announce the following for 2017:
School Captains Vice Captains
Brigitte C & Ethan P Jeyda M & Noah B
I look forward to working closely with these young leaders in 2017. The rest of the
leadership process is also underway with an announcement of leadership roles occurring
later this term.
GK takes out the STATE BASKETBALL FINAL Tuesday our boys basketball team convincingly won three games at MSAC to get into the
State Final. I felt fortunate to be there on the day with Shannon Whelan (Coach) and a
dedicated group of parents to cheer the boys to a close win against St. Bernadette’s—34
to 31. These boys were impressive in their skill but more importantly, in the manner in
which they played, displaying respect and a commitment to each other that is not always
seen in challenging games. These boys have played through District level, Division level
and Region level to get to this point—amazing team effort. Congratulations to all the boys
and to Shannon Whelan on this amazing feat. Some pictures can be found later in the
Linkletter and the boys will also present their winning flag to our school on Monday at
assembly.
Also a big congratulations to our Orienteering Team who were very successful last Friday
in the State Orienteering Championships. Further information in Mr Blackburn’s sport re-
port later in the Linkletter.
REMEMBRANCE DAY Last Friday our community stopped to pay respect on November 11th at
11.00am with many other countries in the world. Our school leaders led the
ceremony with some information about why we take time to reflect on the
sacrifices others have endured for our freedom. We then stopped for our mi-
nute silence with 100% respect. A wreath was laid at our ANZAC bollard to
signify our level of respect on the day and as these pictures display, activities
in classes assisted in reiterating this.
Staffing Changes While we have not completed the pro-
cess of classes and teachers for 2017, I can inform you of two changes that have oc-
curred just recently. Anna Kapnoullas was due to return this term from Family Leave,
however will now stay on Family Leave indefinitely, with Marg Omond continuing in 3K
until the end of the year. Also it is with sadness that we say goodbye to Daniel Boulton at
the end of this year. Daniel is moving to Hazel Glen College in 2017 and we wish him all
the very best in this. Last night the 2017 Prep Team were also announced at the Prep
Information Night. The team will be Angela Totino, Hannah Longo, Marisa Pace and
Bianca Perry. Other staffing will be shared in the next few weeks. LLLLeeeeaaaannnnnnnneeee
2017 Class Placement Requests
TOMORROW is the FINAL DAY that parent
requests for placement consideration can be
made. Social or emotional context is only
considered, not teacher preference. Some
consideration may be given in regards to
composite class requests based on this. Clas-
ses will be finalised by TUESDAY next
week with no additional changes after this
point. Thanks

CANTEEN
Linkletter Page 5
STATE ORIENTEERING SUCCESS GK was well represented by a team of 108 gr 3-6 students that competed at the State Orienteering Championships held at
Westerfolds Park last Friday.
The GK team dominated the event by winning all grade level awards as well as the overall team event by approx 300 pts.
However what was most pleasing was the exemplary behaviour, sportsmanship, team-work, perseverance and application of
our students.
The Orienteering championships are the culmination of the school’s 4 week Orienteering program.
Thank-you to Mrs Green, Ms Whichello, Ms Rough for their assistance on the day. Special thanks to Mrs Owen who assisted
with organisation of the description sheets and washed all of the student’s uniform, as well as her help on the day.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE INFORMATION FOR PARENTS—CSEF
Every Victorian child should have access to the world of learning opportuni8es that exist beyond the class-
room. The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund helps ensure that no student will miss out on the opportunity
to join their classmates for important, educa8onal and fun ac8vi8es. It is part of making Victoria the Educa8on
State and the Government’s commitment to breaking the link between a student’s background and their out-
comes.
CAMPS, SPORTS & EXCURSIONS FUND (CSEF)
School camps provide children with inspiring experiences in the great outdoors, excursions encourage a
deeper understanding of how the world works and sports teach teamwork, discipline and leadership. All are
part of a healthy curriculum. CSEF will be provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to
cover the costs of school trips, camps and spor8ng ac8vi8es.
If you hold a valid means-tested concession card (Health Care Card) or
are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible
for CSEF. A special considera8on category also
exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The
allowance is paid to the school to use towards
expenses rela8ng to camps, excursions or spor8ng
ac8vi8es for the benefit of your child.
The annual CSEF amount per student is:
•• $125 for primary school students
•• $225 for secondary school students

How to encourage kids to be problem-solvers By Michael Grose
When parents solve all children’s problems we not only increase their dependency on
adults but we teach kids to be afraid of making mistakes and to blame themselves for not
being good enough. That’s fertile ground for anxiety and depressive illness.
So, how can we raise kids to be courageous problem-solvers rather than self-critical
scaredy cats? Here are three practical ideas to get you started.
1. Turn requests into problems for kids to solve
Kids get used to bringing their problems to parents to solve. If you keeping solving them, they’ll keep bringing
them. ‘Mum, my sister is annoying me!’ ‘Dad, can you ask my teacher to pick me for the team?’ ‘Hey, I can’t find
my socks!’ It’s tempting if you are in a time-poor family to simply jump in and help kids out. Alternatively, you can
take a problem-solving approach, cuing them to resolve their own problems and take responsibility for their con-
cerns. ‘What can you do to make her stop annoying you?’ ‘What’s the best approach to take with your teacher?’
‘Socks, smocks! Where might they be?’
2. Ask good questions to prompt problem-solving
A problem-solving approach relies on asking good questions, which can be challenging if you are used to solving
your child’s problems. The first question when a child brings you a problem should be: ‘Can you handle this on
your own?’ Next should be, ‘What do you want me to do to help you solve the problem?’ These questions are
not meant to deter children from coming to you; rather, to encourage and teach them to start working through
their own concerns themselves.
3. Coach them through problems and concerns
So, your child feels she was unfairly left out of a school sports team by a teacher and asks you get involved. The
easiest solution may be to meet with the teacher and find out what’s going on. You may or not resolve the prob-
lem but in doing so you are teaching a child to become dependent on you. Alternatively, you could coach your
child to speak to the teacher herself and find out why she was left out. Obviously, there are times when children
need their parents to be advocates for them such as when they are being bullied, but we need to make the most
of the opportunities for children to speak for themselves. Better to help your child find the right words to use and
discuss the best way to approach another person when they have problems. These are great skills to take into
adulthood.
