PIT HEAD BATHSAs we reported in our December 2011 edition the current owners of the pit head bath site Homes & Communities Agency were at the time putting an application together to submit to Rotherham Borough Council for the demolition of the derelict Bath house & amenities block.This application was submitted to the Council on the 23rd May 2012. Rotherham Borough Council confirmed on the 31st July that although the application to demolish the building had been approved by the Council the matter now had to be referred to the Secretary of State for final approval or rejection becuase of the buildings Grade 2 listing.

We hope that this will become a regular feature in the centre of the magazine and we look forward to bringing you all the latest news from the Parish council.We believe this is a major step forward for the Parish Council, our magazine and more importantly our community.

Working hand in hand to strengthen our community

The Old ClockAnyone passing by the Old Colliery offices recently will have noticed that the clock tower has been wrapped in scaffolding for the past few weeks. This was because some much needed maintenance work had to be carried out to some of the brickwork, the East facing clock face and the timbers surrounding the clock faces. The old clock had done very well standing up to the elements for a hundred and forty years, but it was now time with the help of a grant from the Parish Council to administer some TLC, to ensure that it remains intact for at least another hundred years.

During this work, and while Smiths of Derby were replacing the east clock face, some of you may have noticed that the clock was chiming,

one chime short every hour. Now the work is complete the clock is back to normal and chiming the correct number every hour.

like to say a big thank you to the Parish Council

for their generous grant to enable the work to be carried out. Thanks also go to Arthur Whiteway and RDS Builders for their work while exposed to some horrendous downpours, Anston Decorators, Smiths Clocks of Derby and Arnold Laver Timber.

DID YOU KNOWThe Old Colliery Offices with its iconic clock tower was built in 1872 and for a short period was used as one of the first schools in the village. At the same time in 1872 the new purpose built school was nearing completion which is still there today on Station Rd and is now the Youth Centre. Once the new school was opened the then new mining company of Kiveton Park used the clock tower building solely as the mining offices hence the name “the Old Colliery Offices”

Arthur goes to

the Palace

Arthur Whiteway of Queens Avenue Kiveton Park and his wife Peggy were recently invited to attend the Queens garden Party at Buckingahm Palace.

Arthur received his invitation for his outstanding voluntary work which culminated in him being voted Rotherham volunteer of the year 2011.

Arthur said “ to receive the volunteer of the year award was a surprise, but to receive an invite to the palace came as an even bigger surprise, it was a long tiring day but very, very enjoyable”.

Consultation Begins On Rotherham’s Council

Housing PlanResidents in Rotherham are being asked for their views on where new housing should be built and how tenancies should be managed. Rotherham Borough Council is currently developing a major new housing strategy and wants feedback from as many people as possible. From June to September the authority is inviting all residents whether property owners or tenants in both council or private housing to either complete an online questionnaire or to attend one of two consultation events. The Council is also having to consider as part of the Government’s Localism Act a number of possible changes to the way council housing is allocated and how council tenancies are issued. Councillor Rose McNeely, Cabinet Member for Safe and Attractive Neighbourhoods urged everyone to take part. She said: “Housing - and its provision - affects us all and what the authority does and how it provides housing in the future is a huge responsibility because it has such far reaching consequences that is why I would urge everyone to have their say. We need to get the new strategy right and so we have to get as many views and opinions from the widest range of people as possible.” The draft strategy and the questionnaire are available to view on the council’s website at www.rotherham.gov.uk/housingstrategy The consultation events will be held on Wednesday 11th July from I0am to 1pm, and on Thursday 16th August. from 3pm to 6pm. at Springwell Gardens Community Centre.Eastwood View. Springwell Gardens. The public can also make their views known by emailing [email protected] or via their local area assembly meeting. The final documents along with a housing strategy action plan and Rotherham housing intelligence report will be published in November.

Long awaited A57 Todwick improvement

to beginThe Department of Transport have confirmed that work is to start soon on the long awaited dual carriageway on the A57 at Todwick. The one mile (1.6km ) dual carriageway will run from Junction 31 of the M1 motorway to the Red Lion Junction at Todwick. Norman Baker the local transport minister, said the £14m scheme would greatly improve the journeys for motorists, pedestrians and bus passengers. The new dual carriageway is expected to be completed and opened by December of next year ( 2013 ) In the five years between 2006 and 2011 there was one fatality, seven serious accidents and 30 other accidents on the road. Andrew Deniff of the Rotherham Chamber of Trade, said “the dual carriageway would relive a major traffic hotspot. It would also give a real boost for the local area by improving journeys for all motorists and creating much better access to and from the industrial and business parks at Dinnington & Kiveton Park” It is also expected as part of this plan that the right turn off the A57 in to Goosecar lane will cease to be.

Brass Band Competition & JADE Urb Fest

Unfortunately the Forestry Commission who organise the Brass band competition on the Kiveton Community Woodland confirmed that due to a lack of funding, this year’s competition which normaly takes place mid to late July, and which has proved to be a huge success over the last two years had to be cancelled. It is also unclear at this stage as to IF or WHEN it will be held again.

Likewise the JADE Urb Fest also had to be cancelled this year, due to some issues around funding, but moreover the weather conditions and related safety aspects. Sam Oldroyd of JADE said “ Hopefully it will be up and runing again next year”

Good Old Bill

Due to the wonderful British weather the cricket season has been decimated and it is only due to the hard work of our dedicated grounds man Bill Cope that we have managed to play more games than most during the wet summer. Although, we lost a few players this year both teams are holding their own and it has given a chance to the junior players to make their debut’s in senior cricket.

The U13 team coached by Simon Cope has shown great improvement and regular cricket in both the Bassetlaw and Sheffield junior leagues have helped their development.The U11 coached by Gary Lomas, have unfortunately had many games cancelled but Thursday night practice has kept them involved.The social side of our family club has enjoyed many functions the highlight of which was a “Hot Tub” weekend which many enjoyed and the club is grateful and fortunate to have dedicated ladies who work very hard behind the scenes.Further fund raisers are planned and will be advertised on our web sitewww.waleswoodcricketclub.org.uk.Due to the popularity of our junior section a committee has been formed to run this area of the club

and we are planning to increase our coaching staff through the winter which can only help with the development of our junior players and remember coaching is not only available in the summer as we have indoor sessions out of season. Kiveton Park Library Summer Reading

ChallengeKiveton Park Library recently launched a summer reading challenge for the six week summer holidays.Children aged 4 - 11 are encouraged to read six books of their choice during the holidays and they receive a prize every time they complete two.Activities are being held every Thursday 10:30am - 11:30am in the library to encourage the children.An awards ceremony will be held in the library on Saturday 22nd September at 10:30 am to present the children with Certificates and Medals.

St.John The Baptist WalesNews & up and coming events

Open the BookOpen the Book began in Bedford in 1999, where a group of Christians first started presenting Bible stories in school assemblies. They were so well received that they were asked to return – again and again. Soon the word reached other schools and other areas, and Open the Book began to grow from a local initiative into a much bigger national enterprise. The latest available figures (March 2012) show that there are 6,332 registered volunteers reaching about 210,000 children

on a regular basis. This also means that the teachers from these schools are also hearing the stories – some of them for the first time.We (St John the Baptist, Kiveton Park and Wales, and Harthill All Hallows Churches) became involved in the project in 2010 after one of our Church members gained some experience of Open the Book with Dinnington St. Leonard’s. A group of about eight people registered as Storytellers; we visit all three Primary Schools in Kiveton and Wales, and Harthill Primary School once during each half term. The stories are taken from The Lion Storyteller Bible, specially written for the project by Bob Hartman. The stories are presented in dramatic form, with the ‘cast’ dressing up in appropriate costumes, and using ‘props’ for visual impact.We usually try to involve the children in the stories, getting them to participate in the actions and the crowd scenes, which they do with obvious enjoyment. We have been very well received at all the four schools, not only by the children, but also by the staff, who always make us very welcome. At our last presentation, one little girl saw us signing in at Reception. She asked “Have you come to do another show for us?” When I replied that yes we had, her response was “Yippee”. I think that says more about our effectiveness than any words I could say. Nora Brook, Open the Book Storyteller.

Flower Festival – Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th September 2012As part of the National Heritage Open Days Initiative the church will once again be opening its doors for a flower festival on the second weekend in September. Organisations from Wales and Kiveton have been invited to join in with a floral display around the theme of Britain 2012. Inspiration may come from a year of celebrating heritage and achievement, perhaps highlighting the Diamond Jubilee, the Olympics, and other successful sporting events, as well as many other occasions which are being marked this year. The church will be open from 10am-4pm on Saturday 8th, and from 12pm-4pm on Sunday 9th September, when stewards will be on duty and refreshments served. Please come along to celebrate the creativity of local organisations.

Harvest Festival & Come to Church Sunday – Sunday 14th October 2012Harvest Festival is a traditional day of thanksgiving for successful harvests. This year the church will be decorated, and food and toiletries collected for the Sheffield Cathedral Archer Project. Items are collected all year round for this project (currently they are short of Pot Noodles), but a special effort is made at Harvest Festival. The Cathedral Archer Project works with the homeless and vulnerable in Sheffield to help them find pathways away from homelessness and exclusion. Acts of service to those who are in need are at the centre of Christianity. Jesus Christ lived a life that reflected God’s love for humankind. By feeding the hungry, Christians feel that they help bring about a society that is closer to the Kingdom of God. You are warmly invited to come to any of our services that day – 9.15 Parish Communion, 11.00 Family Service, 6.00 Harvest Songs of Praise.

Adult Learning for Leisure & Pleasure at The Old Colliery Offices Kiveton Park

Autumn 2012Our adult community learning for leisure & pleasure classes, some part funded through the Skill Funding Agency and Rotherham Borough Council, others supported by the Big Lottery fund and also the Loscar Wind Farm Fund have proved to be a big success this year and have been delivered to over 200 members of our community. We are now in the process of planning for September onwards and hope to be delivering again a range of classes such as Digital Imaging, Computing for Beginners, How to Set up E-mail and Use the Internet Safely, Spanish Language (covering both Beginner and Intermediate levels) Beginning Family History, Researching and Recording Family History. How to Get the Most Out of Your Home Computer, and Buying and selling on E-bay

All of our courses are for two hours per week, and are delivered at the Old Colliery Offices on Colliery Road in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Some are delivered in the evening with others taking place either in the morning or afternoon. Due to the fact that these courses are part funded we are able to offer them at a very low cost to the learner. They are open to all with no entry requirements other than a willingness to learn, with no exams to sit or any required home learning. We also throw in refreshments of tea or coffee with biscuits. All our tutors are experienced, fully qualified and very helpful.

RETIRING CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

My year of office 2011 to 2012, has been an interesting one. The Clerk to the Council went on long term sick, which eventually turned to resigning her post in December. Cllr Mike Brabbs and Cllr Barrie Marsh (Vice Chair) stepped in as Acting Clerks. Cllr Brabbs also took on the role of responsible finance officer.

In August the council recruited Sylvia Jones to the role of Administration Assistant. This arrangement has worked out very well. Eventually, Cllr Marsh stood down as Acting Clerk because of ill health.

The allotments at Stoney Bank are now being developed with the help of the Pay Back Team, who have worked with Colin Savage to make our footpaths and Rights of Way accessible for all. This project has been in the pipeline for a number of years, along with the binding of the Council Minutes, which are now in progress. The council is experiencing financial restraints due to paying for our ground maintenance, which, in the past, was funded by Rotherham Borough Council.

We have assisted more Community Groups with substantial grants, which include our Village Hall and the Community Development Trust. Smaller grants were also given to Rotherham Holiday Aid, Yorkshire Air Ambulance and other Community Groups.

All Community Groups have the right to apply for a grant. The council also supported the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee events, which took place over the Jubilee weekend of 2/3 June.

It was a great pleasure to hand over the Chain of Office to Cllr Mike Brabbs who has done a sterling job over the past 11 months.

And finally, on 30 July 2012, Mr Richard Waller will take up the post as Clerk to the Council.

The Diamond Jubilee weekend

Queens Diamond Jubilee.Pictured are just some of the activities that took place Including a display by The Lord Conyers Morris men, the Golden oldies tea party, a street party and childrens entertainement.Other activities included Fencing, Karate & Zumba dancing. Sponsors of the weekend were Wales Parish Council, Greencore and small local businesses.

Local ChampionColin Savage - Footpaths and Rights of way Officer for Wales Parish Council has done sterling work for the Council opening up paths and bridleways for able and disabled people to access them.Some of the examples he has done is to claim paths from Queens Avenue to the Cemetry on Church Street: Queens Avenue to Stockwell Avenue and from Stockwell Avenue a path to the canal including a path to Stockwell Lane.

Community PolicingMy name is Paul Dimelow and I am the Police Community Support Officer for the Kiveton Park and Wales Community. Wales Parish Council has invited me to do a little piece in this newsletter about policing issues in the area. I have been PCSO for the Kiveton area now for over 5 years and I have enjoyed my time here. You can see me regularly in the area on foot and pushbike, and I strive to be a friendly face for everybody from schoolchildren up to O.A.P’s.

The area is a very nice area for me to cover generally. We get the occasional bout of Anti-Social Behaviour but over the time I have been PCSO here I have seen this reduce from being quite an issue during the evenings to just now and again. The biggest type of Anti-Social behaviour currently is the use of illegal off road motor bikes being ridden around the area. On a weekly basis, we are getting calls from members of the public complaining of these bikes. Usually they are either on Kiveton Pit top area, the field behind South Terrace at Walesbar or on the Waleswood Industrial Estate. Can I ask that any member of the public gives us a ring on the new non-emergency telephone number 101 if they see any illegal Motorcycles being ridden around the area.

Crime in the area is relatively low. We do seem to be getting a number of minor Shed/garage break-ins but this is something everyone in the area can assist the Police with. I would like to ask everyone with a shed or garage take a look at the security on them. First and foremost are they kept locked? The majority of shed/garage break-ins are from insecure doors or windows. Are the locks substantial? Are the frames and doors rotten so rendering any lock virtually useless? Please take a look and upgrade the security on any outbuildings. Household crime like I have already stated is relatively low in the area but that does not mean we should get complacent. Everyone should look at the security of their own properties and do whatever they can to make their property safe and secure. There has been an article in the press and on TV recently about barrel locks on uPVC doors. There is an issue with the security of these locks which are still being sold in certain DIY and hardware stores. Anyone with any concerns about whether they have one of these locks fitted please contact me and I can visit you to advise what to do. Josh Hill, the Kiveton Park racer has just boosted his chances of securing a fully supported ride for the 2013 season by being selected as one of the Triumph Young’s Guns top 10 elite riders. Josh will compete over the next 5 months to attempt to secure a fully supported Triumph Daytona 675 ride to compete in the Triumph Triple Challenge alongside the British Superbike Championship.Josh will now travel to four seminars that will test his fitness, race setup skills, media and interview techniques. The final of which will take place at the Triumph live festival which celebrates Triumph being 110 yrears old on the weekend of 31st August / 1st September at Mallory Park. Josh will be performing on track demonstrations and media interviews throughout the weekend. Whilst Josh has spent most of the year concentrating on the Triumph Young Guns. Josh also began his Superstock 600 campaign by testing his new 2012 bike at Cadwell Park in May in readiness for the first race which took place at Snetterton late June. “The bikes is really smooth, and I have so much more confidence in this year’s bike compared to last year’s. So hopefully it will help me to achieve improved results” said the optimistic Josh in a recent interview following his visit to the Triumph factory. KIVETON COMMUNITY WOODLAND

Pit Pony Sculpture‘What makes Kiveton and Wales smile?’ This was the starting point for artist Adam Reynold’s project that has culminated in 4 sculptures - 3 of local people in the Desire estate and ‘Dreaming of Sky’ the fantastic sculpted pit pony on top of the hill. The sculptures are intended to form a walk through the estate and into the woodland where you can see the 2 ton cast iron pony and cart overlooking the places where the ponies worked underground and rested in nearby fields. The texts running round the sculpture were taken from local people when asked ‘What makes you smile?’

Woodland Workout Swathes of colourful wild flowers have been abundant on Kiveton Community Woodland this spring, pink ragged robins, ox eye daisies, bird’s foot trefoil, pink clover and even a few orchids have all contributed to the site looking very attractive despite the awful weather. You could help improve the site too by volunteering on the occasional Thursday morning at a Woodland Workout session. 10 volunteers have already helped clear an area

in the woods for children to come and build dens, learn bushcraft and do natural arts and crafts. Future tasks will include planting trees and bulbs, removing tree guards, clearing vegetation to promote the growth of wild flowers and ground flora, litter picking and fence removal. These sessions are designed to be sociable rather than hard work and are a great opportunity to make new friends while being active out in the fresh air. Free tea & biscuits too!

Friends of Kiveton Communtiy Woodland The next Friends of the Woodland meeting will be held at The Old Colliery offices at 6pm on Wednesday 22nd August. The meeting will be followed by a guided walk around the wood, everyone is welcome. A picnic and work session has also been organised for Sunday 19th August from 10am till 2pm where we will be removing tree guards to allow the trees to grow bigger and stronger. This will be another sociable event where everyone is welcome to join in then celebrate their hard work with a picnic on top of the hill.

Fun Fit Mums( Buggyfit )A fun outdoor exercise class for mums wanting to get fit, loose a few pounds and make new friends is still taking place every Thursday at 1.30. The class is only £2 and baby comes free, older children are also welcome during the holidays if they can keep up with their mums.

REJECTED AGAINThe current owners of the former Lord Conyers arms public house in Wales Square (Brocklebank & Co.) Recently submitted another planning application to demolish the the old public house and replace it with four, three bedroomed houses. After careful consideration Rotherham Borough Council have again decided to reject this second application.

The Council noted that Insufficient information had been submitted by the applicant to justify the loss of former Lord Conyers building which it is said contributes in a positive manner to the character and appearance of the Wales Conservation Area.

The Council considered that the proposed demolition and new development would be by way of its design, layout and scale be

detrimental to the character and appearance of the Conservation Area in accordance with UDP Policy, Development in Conservation Areas of the Rotherham UDP and guidance in the NPPF (National Planning Policy Framework)

Community low carbon heating

scheme launchedCommunity groups up and down the nation will be able to bid for a share of £8million to install low carbon heating like solar thermal panels, biomass boilers and heat pumps into homes in their local area. From today, community-based organisations including community co-operatives, voluntary groups, social enterprises and development trusts will be eligible to apply.

DECC has today also announced winners of this year’s £10million RHPP social landlord competition, helping to get low carbon heating systems into the homes of thousands of social housing tenants.

DREAMING OF SKYFour steel sculptures created by artist Adam Reynolds as part of the “What makes Kiveton smile project” were finally unveiled on the evening of Tuesday 17th July.

The ceremonies took place on Lambrell Avenue and Stockwell Avenue where lifelong Kiveton hairdresser Ken Meese ( Pictured ) unveiled a silhouette of himself, and then on the hill on Kiveton Woodland, where a silhouette of a Pit pony and tub were unveiled by Ken Chapman, chair of the Kiveton & Wales History Society.

The Pony sculpture is to commemorate not only those that worked the ponies, but also all those that cared for them and of course all the ponies themselves. A fitting location overlooking the old Kiveton Colliery site where so many of these men & ponies worked and toiled in harsh conditions underground.

The pony sculpture is entitled “Dreaming of Sky “ which so many of these ponies must have done on a daily basis as they worked their shift and waited to be taken back to the surface for fresh air, blue sky and a field without shackles.

There was also a dance display by the Discreet Dance company and songs by Ray Hearne to accompany the unveilings.The sculptures have been funded by Stratta homes, and are supported by The Land Trust, Kiveton Community Woodland and www.rotherham.gov.uk

These are three words that sum up Redroad FM, an exciting local radio station aiming to create real life media experiences for young people.

Redroad FM broadcast to the local community from the Old Colliery Offices at Kiveton Park.

It provides young people with an opportunity to learn how to be a radio presenter, as well as investigative journalists.

Business Development Manager, Trevor Grossett said “A lot of young people would like to DJ in a club or perform drama to an audience, but this is another way for them to share their music and interests”Redroad FM has no minimum age for someone who wants to get into radio broadcasting. We will help them with training and support so they know how to use the equipment properly”Redroad FM has an estimated 6,000 listeners across the region, although it used to be about 10,000 when there was a breakfast show. Trevor went onto say “it is hard to find someone to come in and start at 7.00 or 8.00 am, but we would welcome anyone who had the commitment to do it”.Jodie and Megan are 16 year old friends who attend Wingfield Business and Enterprise College. They have a show on Redroad FM on Fridays at 4.00pm called Jodie and Megan’s Friday Night Top Ten.Jodie said “I heard about Redroad FM through school about 2 years ago. Me and other class mates came here to do a jingle about school dinners”. Jodie and Megan play their Top Ten, and include local news. Megan also sings live on air each week and says singing is something she would like to get into. Megan added “it has made me feel more confident and I actually feel better singing than talking” .Redroad FM is running training events during the summer holiday period and if anyone is interested do get in touch because we are always looking for new presenters.

Kiveton Park Colliery Cricket Club

STAYING POSITIVE DESPITE BY THE WEATHER

Kiveton Park Colliery Cricket Club’s 2012 cricket season has been decimated by the weather so far. At the time of writing eight out of fourteen games have been weather affected, six of which have not even witnessed a ball being bowled. Despite the terrible summer the club have remained positive and are hopeful that the remainder of the season can be played in relatively dry conditions. Results, as well as the weather, have also been mixed. Kiveton have won three and lost three of the six games they have completed so far, leaving the side just below mid table. Kiveton have had to regroup as a club after the previous season’s Premier League adventure. The new players, such as Matt Hall and Adam Whiteley, have settled in well and have proven to be vital members of the side. Coupled with experienced players such as Richard Spurr, Rob Coxon and Richard Grainger the club have a firm basis on which to thrive.

One major loss in the early part of the season was the departure of skipper Lee Brooks who has relocated to Essex. Luke Donaghy has taken over the captaincy and has led the side well with confidence and maturity often in difficult circumstances. Like most clubs Kiveton have been affected off the pitch by the poor weather. Most clubs rely on self generated income to keep going and Kiveton are no different. The lack of matches at home has meant a severe lack of income on match days, often no income at all. Whilst not at a critical stage it is important to remember the fine line between boom and bust particularly in grass roots sports and in such challenging times. Despite the disjointed season Kiveton are confident looking ahead to the remainder of the season. A challenge for the title looks too far away at present so the focus is now on consolidation and hopefully a strong run of results towards the end of the season.

As ever the club are grateful for any support from the local community especially during match days. As well as three senior teams the club also have numerous youth teams across various age groups and encourage youngsters from the area to become involved. The 11th Rotherham Scout Group has actively supported children and young people of Kiveton Park, Wales and surrounding villages for many years. We operate on an entirely voluntary basis, with no mainstream funding. After over 40 years of service, the current scout headquarters building, behind St. John’s rooms in Kiveton, has reached the end of its useful life despite lots of loving care, attention and repair! We are having a big push on fundraising to replace the building. Can you help? We have a grand summer raffle taking place and tickets are on sale throughout the village. We have been busy over the summer – dodging the rainclouds whilst trying to get outdoors as much as possible! Archery, windsurfing, shelter building, fire craft, leather craft, recycled art, pond dipping, canoe polo, kayaking, bug hunts, Olympic crafts and games and so much more besides. We have been celebrating the Jubilee; planting trees at Kiveton Woodlands as part of a Jubilee Wood, scouting and guiding had a big camp and party at Walesby over the Jubilee weekend and we had further celebrations at our Big Picnic in Kiveton Woodlands for all the group. The Cubs held a competion to design a Birthday card for Queen Elizabeth. Emelia Hollingshead was the winner and posted her card to the Queen. In return she has received a lovely card back from her Majesty. The scouts recently took part in a county 24 hour challenge event and we won! Tasks ranged from pulling a Landrover to shaving a foam beard off a balloon. This year we entered 2 teams in the Shenington 24 hour pedal car challenge event and both teams completed in good times. Seven of our scouts move on to the Wales Explorer scout unit in September and have been joining in activities with them over the last couple of months; wide games, stream scrambling, cooking, film making

A Kiveton Park & Wales Olympian

As we all enjoy the London 2012 Olympics few residents of Kiveton Park and Wales will realise that our community had a competitor from the village who took part in the last London Olympics in 1948.

William Henry Blackwell, Bill to his friends, was born on November 19th 1917 at Storth Lane, Kiveton Park. He was the son of Harry and Lucy Blackwell and the eldest grandson of William Henry Blackwell, who came to work at the newly opened Kiveton Park Colliery in the early 1870’s.

Bill was only nine years old when his father, Harry, died and times were hard for him and his mother Lucy. He attended Wales Junior School and is featured on page 28 in the School’s Centenary Booklet. When he was only fourteen years old Bill left school and followed his father and grandfather down the mine at Kiveton Colliery.

A fitness fanatic, along with his friends from Kiveton Park and Harthill, he formed a Health and Fitness group which had it’s headquarters in the old hut at Firvale.The group would swim in Harthill Ponds and give fitness displays in and around the area.

Bill never liked his work down the mine and constantly looked for an alternative form of employment.When returning from one night shift he read an advertisement in the “Radio Times” seeking young men to join the Metropolitan Police Force in London. This was his chance!He applied and because of his fitness he was readily accepted. Aged nineteen years old he left Kiveton in 1936 and went to London to join the Police.After the start of the Second World War he joined the Royal Air Force and saw service in Burma fighting the Japanese and was demobbed in 1946.On his return to the Metropolitan Police Force he resumed his fitness activities and also acted as an examiner for the Amateur Swimming Association. He also became a more than competent wrestler and competed in many competitions which eventually led to him being chosen to represent his country in the Heavyweight free style class at the 1948 London Olympics.

On July 30th 1948 he was one of two British representatives who competed in the event against men from Australia, Belguim, Finland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Iran, Switzerland, Turkey and the U.S.A.Although he did not win a medal this was no mean feat for a young man from a poor mining family from South Yorkshire.

It is worth noting that, unlike today’s fully sponsored event, in possibly the last truly amateur Games, competitors were expected to buy their own uniforms but were given a badge to put on the blazers they bought for themselves. Gymnasts were also given a pair of underpants!

Many of Bill’s gymnastic achievements are recorded in the London Metropolitan Police Archives along with photographs taken when he was in the Police Sports Team as he was one of only two Metropolitan Police Officers who took part in the 1948 Olympic Games.

Bill spent his retirement from the Force in Ashford, Kent where he died in 2003 aged eighty-six years.

A GREAT SUCCESSThe Duke of Devonshire opened the Chesterfield Canal Festival at the new Staveley Town Basin on Saturday. He said “We are in the middle of a big good news story about the Chesterfield Canal”. This started a superb weekend of family fun. The Duke went on to unveil a plaque with Cllr George Wharmby, Chair of Derbyshire County Council, to open the Basin officially. His final duty was to name the Chesterfield Canal Trust’s new tripboat, the Hugh Henshall, and to have a cruise. The money to build the boat, which is specially adapted for the disabled, was won on the People’s Millions by the Chesterfield Canal Trust. Members of the public poured in to enjoy a huge range of activities. Many went on a boat trip, some combining this with a trip to Barrow Hill Roundhouse to have a Steam Train ride.There were plenty of

rides for the kids, the zorbs proving to be especially popular. Many adults joined their children on Segway rides or canoeing.The Entertainment Marquee was constantly busy with several bands as well as clog dancing, choirs from Springwell Community School and the Pomegranate Youth Theatre performing extracts from their recent production of Tales from the Chesterfield Canal.Further entertainment was provided outside including the Urban Gypsies belly dancers and the Woodhouse Prize Band. Flying displays by the Raptor Foundation with their Birds of Prey were hugely popular. There were dozens of stalls of every kind, many reporting very healthy sales.

Seven different food outlets from Mr Spud to Coconut Kitchen were complemented by the Real Ale bar provided by Brampton Brewery.On the Saturday night there was a concert featuring the Swing Commanders who were rapturously received by a standing ovation.

Throw in a steamroller, fourteen MGs, model boats and the opportunity to help to create a canal collage and you begin to get a picture of what was on offer. Very importantly, the rain held off for virtually the whole weekend.Judging by the comments received on the gates as happy people went home, the event was a great success. The question on most people’s lips was “Will it be on again next year?” The Chesterfield Canal Trust very much hopes that the answer will be “Yes!”
