Last week Colin the postman came to Norwood. He talked to Year One about posting letters and parcels. We watched a DVD all about ‘Lennie the Letter’ and how he goes

in the postbag and sometimes on a night train. Colin made us all guess how much a 1st class stamp cost- 46p!

Many thanks to Colin who gave up his day off to come and talk to us.

By Grace Maciver and Callum Morris.

Year One Post Man Visit

Film Club

Yr 5 have recently been doing film club on a Wednesday. You watch a film then at the

end you talk about what you liked or didn’t like, then you vote on the film. There are always a different variety of votes from 1 to 5. Here are the national star scores for the

films we watched:

Hue and Cry -3*The Secret of Kells – 4*

Return from Witch Mountain – 4*Storm Boy – 3*

Fantastic Mr Fox – 5*Overall, Norwood’s favourite Y5 film was Fantastic Mr Fox because it was modern and

everybody liked it! We would recommend FILM CLUB to everybody we know!

Children in the Spotlight

Shinewaves Competition Time

Last week’s competition was to write a poem or limerick about walking to school. The winner with a poem entitled ‘Don’t Be A Fool, Just Walk To School’ was Caris Dixon from 5M. Well done!

This week’s competition is by special request. Some listeners have requested a design a monster competition. So this week’s competition is to create a mythical monster, anyway you like: describe in words, draw, paint, collage or model. Make

sure you include a name and explain any special features your creature has.

Pop your design in the Shinewaves postbox, or hand in at the office if it is too big, with your name and class on the back by the morning of Tuesday 7th June.

Norwood’s Next Big Thing!

Enterprise Project

Has your child got a flair for business? Do they possess the gift of the gab? Would they be able to sell ice to the Eskimos?Well if the answer is yes, we have the showcase for them!

During the fortnight in June, Monday 13th June – Friday 24th June, your child will be involved in an Enterprise Project named ‘Norwood’s Next Big Thing!’ This event will involve problem solving skills, communication and creativity. The

children will learn how to pitch, what a product is and how to be persuasive!

Each class is to be given an amount of money and their job is to make a product that can be sold for a profit. Classes will

be making the exact same product, but will be competing against each other to see who can raise the most funds.

All money raised will be going towards our Arts Festival beginning the 4th July, whereby all family members are welcome to visit the school on the Sale Day (23rd June), to not only go to their child’s class, but to go around the whole school

commenting on each classes persuasive selling skills, the quality of product and the simple enjoyment factor. Like all good sales people (and from many an Apprentice program – bad sales people!), the school fully appreciates that no sales may

be made, but we would still value your comments, enthusiasm and involvement!

More information will follow nearer the time, but if you have any comments or concerns then please feel free to email me, Miss A. McCarthy, on [email protected].

Many thanks for your continued support and commitment to make Norwood a wonderful school!

Sian & Harry from the School Council, recently went to Holy Trinity School to help with the planting of shrubs & trees in their school grounds. Norwood School Council is part of the Sefton Learning Partnership & has now forged

close links with other School Councils.

Charity Cake Sale

The School Council would like to say a very big thank you to the children

in Years 3 & 4 for their wonderful

cakes. It was a very successful sale and we

raised a magnificent £101 towards

the school's charity, Cancer Research.

PTA Fashion Show

Thank you for attending and thank you to all our fantastic models who brilliantly ‘strutted their stuff’ on the catwalk!

We raised, approximately, a truly wonderful £200!

Last Sunday Tom (from 5B) competed at the National Gymnastics Finals in Birmingham.

This involved all regions in the UK competing as teams and individuals.

Tom was in the North West team representing his age group

(an achievement in itself to be selected).

The North West team came 4th overall after competing on

seven pieces:rings; pommels; floor; high bar; parallel bars; vault and

conditioning set.

National Gymnastics Finals

As an individual Tom came 9th overall for his age group out of the UK.We are very proud of him and his commitment to the sport.

Well done Tom!

Last week, as part of their World War Two topic, Year Six had a fantastic time coding and decoding messages with Mr James learning about the famous German Enigma machine. We also had our Make Do and Mend exhibition, where children brought

in their projects. It was wonderful to see so much variety, including sewing, gardening, knitting, cooking, baking and wood/metal work. Such fantastic skills to teach Mrs Coleman!

YR 6 Topic Work

Victoria Park Fun RunLast Thursday a group of Y5 and Y6 children attended the Victoria Park 1 mile run. All children completed the mile and Tom Langford (Y5) came 1st in just 3 seconds off the track record! Both the Y5 and Y6 boys came a fantastic 2nd place

overall!

Mrs Bentley and Mrs Harris would like to thank all the parents and staff who have attended the cross country events this year, your support has been fantastic. But most of all a HUGE well done to all the children who have attended cross country training sessions and events. You have been superb and lets hope next year is just as rewarding and as fun.
