HCC Open Day

Hope Christian College’s first Open Day for 2017 was very much a success. As usual the carnival-like atmosphere had parents and students smiling alike as they enjoyed classroom displays, were involved with activities and games, were entertained by some excellent performances and relaxed with friends in our food court. Thanks to all who came along and made it a great day.

Year 3 Wildlife Excursion Miss Fairley and Mr Webb’s Year 3 classes visited Gorge Wildlife Park recently. Here’s what the students reported:

On Friday, Week 6, the Year 3s went on an excursion to Gorge Wildlife Park, because we are learning about native animals. First, we listened to the education officers. I patted a cute koala for the first time and it was so soft. I got to pat a carpet python and it was very scary. I got to touch a bearded dragon and it was spiky. (Monica Yarak)

We split into groups and toured the park. Firstly, I went to see the monkeys. They were really funny. One monkey was banging on the sign with a stick. Then we went to see the meerkats. They were so cute. When we were leaving I heard the meerkats crying. They did not want us to leave. (Haillie Stewart)

We spent some time feeding the kangaroos. I also fed a joey. He tickled me when he ate. I had the best day ever. (Bodie Norton)

We spent time feeding the wallabies and the kangaroos. I was feeding one kangaroo for a long time until another one came and then another one came. They all preferred crackers to the pellets. I had a great time there. (Xavier Day-Turner)

Engineering Program In 2016, Hope Christian College Pathways Coordinator, Mrs Alford, advised me of an opportunity to attend the University of New South Wales Summer Engineering Program in Sydney. Unfortunately, I missed out on a place but the university forwarded my application to Curtin University in Perth. I was very happy to be accepted into the Indigenous Australian Engineering Summer School held in the Christmas Holidays from 15 -21 January.

The program was created by Engineering Aid Australia in partnership with Curtin University. The goal of the school is to develop an understanding of yourself and university life, build relationships with firms and ultimately decide if engineering is right for you.

Twenty students from over Australia converged in Perth to grab a hold of this opportunity to explore Engineering as a career option. Over the week a number of events and activities were held where we met with representatives from several engineering firms such as Arup, Aurecon, Woodside and WSP Parsons Brinkerhoff. We experienced what it meant to be an engineer firsthand, conducting site visits to bridges, oil and gas companies, as well as the new Perth Stadium. These were all opportunities to see if engineering was truly for us.

The week was an amazing experience; the friendships made and the opportunities presented all worked together to create a remarkable Summer School. I encourage other students to take advantage of the opportunities presented to them. It can be a life changing experience. - Isaac Kathner( Year 12 Student)

Experiencing Art On 6 March, the Year 11 and 12 Visual Art students had the opportunity to go to the Helpmann Graduate Art exhibition. They were privileged to have two artists who had their works exhibited explain their work to the students, which gave the students a greater insight into the artist work. We then followed this up with a visit to the Art Gallery where we had a guided tour of the Rodin Exhibition (Verses Rodin). Students were quite taken aback with the sculptures and have learned to appreciate sculpture as a form of art.

Next term the Year 10 Visual Art students have a very unique opportunity to have their work exhibited in the Art Gallery. They will visit the Art Gallery, to find an artist to investigate and replicate an art work of theirs. After creating a piece they will revisit the Gallery to present in front of their chosen art works. The Gallery will use these replications as part of their teaching and learning program and may keep the work to display. This is an exciting opportunity for our students and we look forward to seeing their creations. - Mrs Olivia Saman

VET courses can be a good choice for students who have an interest in areas that are not catered for by regular school subjects. VET courses can contribute towards a student’s SACE. There are many options to choose from, which give students a head start into their career pathway. Some courses selected in recent years include: automotive, early childhood education, business, aviation, health services, fitness, hairdressing, digital media and Christian Ministry.

I encourage parents to discuss VET options with their children. My work days this semester are Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and I can be contacted by email at other times. Please contact me if you would like more information about VET courses, career pathways or work experience. - Mrs Fay Alford (Pathways)
