A fter a year of fundraising, Town Hall meetings, plan approvals, razing and building, filmmaker George Lucas and San Anselmo Chamber President & CEO Connie Rodgers unveiled Imagination Park to a cheering crowd of over 1,500 people in downtown San Anselmo on June 20, 2013. Walk past 535 San Anselmo Avenue, the site of the park, and you’ll no longer see a vacant building. Instead, you’ll see families picnicking on the grass, friends chatting on benches, children running along the cement pathways, and a constant stream of visitors from across the bay and beyond snapping photos of the town’s two new celebrities, Indiana Jones and Yoda, the magnificent bronze statues that sit regally atop the park’s fountain. Sculptor Lawrence Noble said he was honored to be able to create the two American film icons. He noted that because the entire Star Wars saga was created by George Lucas in San Anselmo, it seemed both fitting and proper that these statues resided in Imagination Park. Bank of Marin Named Top Corporate Philanthropist on Prestigious San Fran-cisco Business Times List

Bank of Marin (NAS-DAQ: BMRC) was named to the San Francisco Business Times annual “Top Corporate Philanthropist” list for the 10th consecutive year. The list of more than 70 companies recognizes the generosity of Bay Area businesses in total giving and volunteerism. Joan Capurro, Director of Community Relations, accepted the award on behalf of the Bank at the awards event.

Bank of Marin gives more than 1% of pre-tax profit to charity. The Bank’s financial contributions to non-profits are complemented by the donation of more than 10,000 hours of employee volunteer hours during the course of the year. Officers of the Bank also serve on 70 local non-profit boards across San Francisco, Marin, Napa and Sonoma Counties.

“We are deeply committed to the communities we serve and are very proud of our employees who contribute their time and talent to so many local non-profits,” said Russell A. Colombo, Presi-

dent and Chief Executive Officer. “As a leading com-munity bank, giving back is intrinsic to our culture and it is critical to the success of our business.” Bank of Marin, Joan Capurro, 1101 Fourth Street, San Rafael; 415-485-2252; [email protected]; BankofMarin.com

San Francisco Theological Seminary’s Designs Approved for Affordable Housing

Under the project leadership

of HartWest, the San Francisco Theological Seminary received Design Review approval from the San Anselmo Planning Commission last July for the largest project in recent town history. The SFTS Campus Master Plan combines affordable, attractive housing for students and faculty along with a new maintenance facility for the 120-year old landmark institution.

Thanks to exceptional architecture from Hart| Howerton, conscientious engineering from Firma Design Group and sage advice from land use attorney Neil Sorensen, the project got unanimous approval in spite of organized opposition. Extending over 15 months of complex design, drainage and politics, HartWest completed the project on schedule and under budget. When combined with their recently completed Virginia Grove and approved Spirit Rock projects, HartWest has now successfully received entitlements for 46 low-income housing units in Marin under

their Employer-directed Workforce Housing Program. These projects prove that affordable housing solutions in Marin do not need to be high density or contentious. Instead, they can add value to their community and benefit the neighborhood. San Francisco Theological Seminary, 105 Seminary Rd, San Anselmo; 415-451-2836; Sfts.edu

Marin IJ Calls Learning Curve “Highly Creative Marin County Quartet”

Paul Liberatore of the Marin Independent Journal reported that the sophomore album by Learning Curve, San Anselmo’s very own acclaimed band, is loaded “with a baker’s dozen [of] original power pop/rock songs, including a title track that was co-produced by Johnny Colla of Huey Lewis and the News.

“A San Anselmo resident, Colla also added backing vocals on the tune and wrote the arrangement for the News horn section.

“A story song about a guy whose romantic fire gets stoked when he meets an old lover at the Pelican Inn, ‘There’s a Flame’ showcases the fine tenor lead vocal of guitarist John Lavaroni and the band’s trademark

sibling harmonies, with John and his drummer brother, Pete Lavaroni, joined by keyboardist Jeff Ray and bassist Ross Perry, who moonlights as president of Sunnyside Nursery in San Anselmo.”

Liberatore notes that the songs on “There’s a Flame” are as “tuneful and taught as the 13 on the band’s debut album, ‘Mannequin Dump.’ By definition, a learning curve is a graphical representation of the increase in learning that comes with experience. With this second album, these seasoned musicians have earned a place at the very top of that curve.”

Dear Marin Community Leaders,

The Pacific Sun is excited to announce the launch of the 2013 Heroes of Marin and to welcome Redwood Credit Union as the presenting sponsor. The awards program, initiated in 2011, recognizes the true, yet often anonymous Heroes of Marin. Last year, eight individuals and groups were honored for their positive influence on Marin and in the lives of its residents.

With Redwood Credit Union’s assistance, another eight honorees will receive the recognition they so richly deserve. The Pacific Sun will feature the stories behind two Heroes award recipients each week beginning November 22 and concluding December 13. These honorees will be formally acknowledged at a dinner reception November 14th.

We want to recognize those individuals, groups, or organizations that stand out because of their actions, integrity, or honor. That hero could be a firefighter who rescues a child from a burning house, the girl who is courageously battling leukemia, the business that allows its employees to mentor teens for an hour a week, or the neighborhood group that cleans up the creek.

Awards will be given in the following categories: Arts and Culture, Community Spirit, Courage, Environmental Stewardship, Innovation, Rising Star and Role Model. The Pacific Sun’s Lifetime Achievement award will recognize an individual or group for contributions, leadership, enthusiasm, and tireless efforts on behalf of the community, county and neighbors.

We are calling for nominations. If you know a person, organization, or group

deserving of recognition, please go to www.PacificSun.com/Heroes to fill out the form. Deadline for the nominations is October 4.

We would also like to invite you to become a sponsor. Sponsorship levels and benefits are enclosed. All sponsors will have the opportunity to choose a specific award to sponsor. Champion Level sponsors will have an exclusive sponsorship within their business category and they will receive distinct prominence throughout the weekly recognition articles as well as at the recognition dinner. This is an opportunity

for your organization to show its commitment to the unsung Heroes of Marin while marketing your organization to people who are making a difference in Marin and impacting the lives of our residents.

For information, please contact Advertising Director John Harper at (415) 485-6700, ext. 306. Thank you for your kind consideration and we look forward to your participation.

Sincerely,

Bob HeinenPublisher

people, Dave Donery, Bob Atwood and Lauren Matthys, submitted the same name to a park naming contest that drew 76 entries.

The new 8,700-square-foot park, a gift from San Anselmo resident and Star

Wars creator Lucas, opened just in time for the annual San Anselmo Art and Wine Festival. On August 2, there was also a free “Kids’ Inauguration” which included face painting, balloons, popcorn and an opportunity for children to create a quilt to

thank George Lucas for the park. This is not the first time Lucas has

contributed to the community. He also paid for the under-grounding of power lines on Miracle Mile, and reconstructed the building that houses Amazing Grace Music.

And he donated more than half of proceeds from the sale of his company Lucasfilm to Disney to the San Rafael-based Edutopia, a nonprofit dedicated to improving and transforming the K-12 learning process with 21st-century strategies and innovations.

As so eloquently said by Sir Winston Churchill: “You make a living by what you get, but you make a life by what you give.” San Anselmo has received an amazing gift from our 40-year resident, George Lucas: Imagination Park.

In 2012, the San Rafael Pacific’s, an independent minor league team comparable to the AA/AAA levels of affiliated baseball, became the first professional baseball team in the history of Marin County. Playing in the North American Baseball League, the Pacific’s enjoyed their inaugural season playing at historic Albert Park.

In 2013, the Pacific’s joined the first-year Pacific Association of Professional Baseball Clubs, and will compete against Maui, Hilo, and first-year Vallejo in their second season. Former San Rafael manager, Mike Marshall, was named Commissioner of the league in December of 2012. The Vallejo Admirals will begin their first season in team history, as they joined as the fourth member of the league in February of 2013. The Pacific Association announced that they will

compete in inter-league play with the Arizona-based Freedom Pro League during the 2013 regular season.

We invite you to come out to ballpark this season and in the years to come and help us continue to write the history of the San Rafael Pacific’s!

The achievements of 40 outstanding Marin women entrepreneurs

who’ve made a difference were celebrated at a dinner hosted last May at the “Gathering Place for Entrepreneurs,” otherwise known as the Renaissance Center in downtown San Rafael.

One of Marin’s most beloved caterers, Stacy Scott, provided a scrumptious dinner served by specially selected male waiters, who

were there to pamper the honorees.

The three San Anselmo Chamber honorees included: Joyce Brown, owner of Élan Health and Fitness Center; Joan Capurro, Senior Vice President, Bank of Marin & San Anselmo Chamber of Commerce Business Citizen of the Year 2013; and our very own Connie Rodgers, President/CEO San Anselmo Chamber of Commerce.

Congratulations ladies!

shop, eat, stay Local!• Help San Anselmo retain its special charm. Spending your dol-

lars locally will help our businesses keep their doors open. • There’s so much to choose from! • Save on gas! Why drive out of town, spending more than four

dollars per gallon to save a dollar or two?• Local shopping dollars support our police, firefighters, roads

and parks. • Help support worthy causes. Local businesses statistically

give more to local non-profits, charities and schools than big box stores headquartered elsewhere.

• Keep jobs here. • Shop where everyone knows your name. Become a regular,

valued customer and that business is sure to show you their appreciation.
