2013 CANOWINDRA SHOW We’re less than two weeks away from the 2013 Canowindra Show and the Show Office is now open at the Central Motors - NRMA located at 91 Gaskill Street Canowindra. For information regarding the Show, renewing memberships, becoming a new member and for registering entries, please call into the Show Office from 10am to 4pm Wednesday 18 September to Friday 20 September, and Monday 23 September until 1pm Thursday 26 September. Please note that the Show Office will NOT be open on Friday of the Show. Cobley Pavilion entries need to be at the Showground by 9am on Friday 27 September unless otherwise indicated in Show Schedule.

MORE THAN TEA AND SCONES The Country Women's Association (CWA) NSW will be celebrating CWA Awareness Week 2013 from 14-21 September 2013 with a host of local events and activities planned across the state. With a focus on Diversity, Charity and Change the CWA NSW will be actively working to demonstrate the enormous scope of work it undertakes as one of the State’s oldest and most influential not for profit community organisations. CWA Awareness Week is a time to reflect on the achievements of the CWA in Canowindra and all across the state.

Just in the last few weeks Canowindra CWA have celebrated International Day with a Moroccan feast; catered for the Masonic Club’s Installation Dinner; and assisted with catering for the Winyar Ram Sale. Around 150 people enjoyed the first CWA Sunday Serenade held 25 August. The performances were amazing, the choir conducted by Mrs Jill MacDonald was fun, and the afternoon tea was scrumptious! But the most noteworthy feature of the afternoon was the community spirit that was so evident in the audience.

Catering for the Winyar Ram Sale Day Wednesday 11 September. L-R: Sally Wallace, Jenny Middleton, Sue Dawson and Anne Ward.

To the editor... Thank you to Calare: The dust has settled and another election campaign has ended. I thank the people of Calare for re-electing me as their representative in Federal Parliament and I look forward to what we can achieve with a new Coalition government in Canberra. I take my hat off to my hardworking volunteers and staff. Without their efforts I could not have hoped to secure the seat with such a big margin. So I thank each and every person that helped with pre-poll, campaign offices, Election Day and every job in between. In the new Coalition government the Nationals have lost a Cabinet position and only get three in total. As I was unsuccessful in attaining the position as Deputy Leader of the Nationals and one of the Cabinet positions goes to the Leader, and another to the Leader in the Senate, I am not the new Minister for Agriculture. This is very disappointing as I believe I was well placed to make a big difference to the prosperity of agriculture, and had worked towards doing so for the last five years as Shadow Minister. The good news is I have much more time to look after the interests of Calare. John Cobb - Dubbo Federal Member for Calare

SILOS @ THE SHOW Local primary and secondary students and interested community members are encouraged to visit The Silos Project information table in the Cobley Pavilion at this year’s Canowindra Show to sign up for music, dance and design workshops to be held in October and November. The Silos is a unique creative project that will draw its inspiration from the beautiful architecture and local stories of our regional silos. Two years in the making, The Silos Project will culminate in an amazing one-night-only physical theatre experience incorporating theatre, dance, acrobatics, music, light and sound, using the Canowindra silo and surrounding railway precinct as the dramatic backdrop for the production. The development of the project over the next two years will provide many benefits to the wider community including creative workshops and the filming of precious oral histories which will be gifted to local historical societies. The Silos Project would like to hear from anyone with a story to tell or an opinion of the silos. Have you used or worked on the silos? Have you climbed the silos? Do you think the silos are beautiful? What do the silos mean to you? Please stop by and say hello at the Show to learn more about The Silos Project, sign up for a workshop or tell us your stories! The Silos Design Workshop presented by Joey Ruigrok, Sydney based designer of sets, structures, rigging and contraptions, and local architect Dylan Gower, at local schools Tuesday 29-Thursday 31 October, suitable for all ages, adults are welcome. The Silos Music Workshops presented by Sydney based composer Scott Saunders and local music teachers Maryanne Wright and Kerrie O’Dea at Cowra High School: Saturday 19 October all musicians briefed on project and asked to bring an instrument and musical piece. Sunday 20 October 10am-12noon for primary students; 2pm-4pm for secondary students. Saturday 26 October open to community; Sunday 27 October 10am-12noon for primary students; and 2pm-4pm for secondary stu-dents. The Silos Dance Workshop presented by local dance instructors Alison Plevey and Alison Buckley at Cowra High school: Saturday 2 November 10am-4pm for primary students. Sunday 3 November 10am-4pm for secondary and Year 6 students. Repeated Saturday 16 & Sunday 17 November.

CABONNE MAYORAL ELECTION 2013 Cabonne Mayor Ian Gosper and Deputy Mayor Lachie MacSmith were re-elected unopposed Tuesday 17 September 2013 for their second terms in office. Cr Gosper thanked his deputy, fellow councillors, General Manager Andrew Hopkins and senior staff for their support and help during the past 12 months. “I will definitely calling on you for more assistance in the next 12 months,” he said. The Mayor praised the strong teamwork developed by councillors and staff and said he aimed to build on that in the coming year.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY NEWS Some will have already noticed a new bronze plaque on the wall of the River Bank Gallery. It is the first of several that will gradually appear on buildings in Gaskill Street Conservation Area as part of a joint project of Cabonne Council and Canowindra Historical Society & Museum Inc. Building owners are invited to share half the cost with Cabonne Council. The project is being managed voluntarily by the Historical Society which has researched the history of the buildings. Reducing the wording to the required few lines and checking accuracy is a major task. Funding was limited to twelve plaques for Stage 1 so that not all eligible building owners were invited this year. It is expected that further funds will be available in 2014 for more to participate and that a brochure will give fuller histories of the buildings and the development of Canowindra’s CBD. In the lead up to Bathurst’s Ben Hall Raid Weekend, a coach load from Bathurst District Historical Society will make its last stop at Canowindra on a ‘Chasing Ben Hall’ Tour which leaves Bathurst at 7am on Thursday 26 September. The tour includes Ben Hall sites in Grenfell, Eugowra, Forbes and Canowindra districts. The tour group is expected to have tea in Canowindra’s Memorial Park before returning to Bathurst. Audrey and John Farley are to meet and greet them at the Historical Museum about 5pm where others may wish to join them.

WORKING TOGETHER TO FIGHT CRIME .../Contd

Chaired by Eddy Wilkinson, president of the Canowindra Business Chamber, Mr Driver presented an overview of the command in respect of resources and deployment, reported crime, how you can assist, and options to increase police visibility. Availability of staff was one of the main challenges faced for the Cowra Sector when coordinating the duty roster. This has been addressed by the return of some staff which will improve the allocation of officers. Discussion on reported crime patterns demonstrated the times and days of the week when crime is most prevalent, however compared to other towns within and outside the Sector, Canowindra fares better than most. It was agreed however that recent incidents of crime have become more serious and preventative measures needed to be considered. Mr Driver recommended ways in which individuals can help prevent crime by not being an easy target: removal of valuables from cars, even if parked off the street; lock your car and house, especially during major events, for example The Show and the upcoming Bushranger Jubilee; and report suspicious behaviour. The main issue raised at the meeting was the lack of police visibility in our town, this was addressed by a statement from Mr Driver, “I will give you an undertaking that we will go and look at our practices with a view to increasing our visibility.” Phil Gersbach was invited to join an existing co m mi t tee w he re po l i ce , cou n c i l representatives and community members meet regularly to share information on local crime and safety issues. Further information in regards to this will be included in future issues of The Phoenix. Remember: it is better to be safe than sorry. For emergencies and immediate police presence, ring Triple Zero 000; to report an incident where police are required to take a statement and evidence call our police number 02 6344 1300 (the phone will be redirected to an available police officer); to advise of an incident after it has occurred, where a police officer is not required but a report is necessary, call the Police Assistance Line on 131 444. Phil Gersbach and Jo Gaigals would like to thank everyone who attended the meeting or extended their apology. Thanks to Eddy Wilkinson for chairing the meeting, and the helpful staff of the Canowindra Services and Citizens Club for their assistance in setting up the venue. A sincere thank you to Ms Godden, Messrs Driver, Powell, Owen and Payne for listening to and addressing our concerns and the great job you do. We look forward to working with you in future to ensure the safety and protection of our community.
