She was thought to be born blind by her relatives, but her mother had hope that one day her dear Fatima will be able to see the light. She was brought to one of MALC’s Surgical Eye Camps in Sohbat Pur, Balochistan. Both her eyes were operated in the camp and when her dressing was removed she cried and was happy that she can now see her parents specially her mother who has been her eyes for 12 years. Our team members were ecstatic to watch Fatima playing with her siblings during their follow-up visit after the camp. According to Fatima’s mother, during the 12 years she had faith and hope that Fatima will be able to see. Her prayers were answered when the camp was arranged in their area and now she is able to concentrate more on her other children as well after Fatima’s operation. Cataract is one of the major causes of blindness. If we look at the scenario of Balochistan where health care facilities are sporadic it becomes a major health concern. Children especially girls at times are thought to be blind and often not treated which leads to negligence and they end up being blind for the rest of their lives. Our team has been able to touch many lives like Fatima through surgical eye camps which are now becoming a permanent feature of MALC’s Balochistan Blindness Control Programme.

Learning is a continuous process. A two Day training on ‘Enhancing Leadership Skills’, sponsored by ChristoffelBlindenmission (CBM), was organized by MALC at Pakistan Institute of Management (PIM) for its management staff on18th and 19th May, 2017 respectively. Through this training, the team was provided an opportunity to work in cross-functional teams.

WORKSHOP ON ‘ENHANCING LEADERSHIP SKILLS’ SPONSORED BY CBM

IN-HOUSE TRAINING SESSIONS AT MALC

MALC holds in-house training sessions weekly as a part of continuous

growth and development of its employees. In house training sessions are

an effective teaching learning tool where participants get an opportunity

to share their experiences. Through the various sessions employees are

able to improve their soft skills and enhance their knowledge in the subject

matter. Recently, sessions on presentation skills, assertiveness, emotional

intelligence, transactional analysis and etiquettes & mannerisms were held

where there was an overwhelming participation.

PTP- Sindh extended its support to MALC by

donating 7 microscopes, among them 2 are LED

microscopes, which will help boost MALC's TB

control activities.

MALC has always tried to provide quality health

care facilities and has recently inducted three

GeneXpert units throughout Karachi which will

diagnose the TB cases more efficiently and

effectively. With the inclusion of LED

Microscopes, MALC will be at par with the WHO

guidelines.

PROVINCIAL TUBERCULOSIS PROGRAM (PTP) – SINDH DONATES MICROSCOPES

A small ceremony was held on 20th May, 2017, to appreciate the efforts of the TB desk in coordinating with PTP for thedonation. On the auspicious occasion, the LED microscopes were handed over to the field teams of Karachi. Mr. MervynLobo, CEO-MALC, appreciated the TB desk team for not only providing results in terms of treating persons affected byTuberculosis, but for striving to acquire new technologies.

LEPROSY AWARENESS WORKSHOP

RECENT EVENTS Reported by: Health Education Department

A Leprosy awareness workshop was held at MALC, Saddar,

Karachi, by Health Education Department (Mr. Daniel

Karamat – Health Education Officer, MALC, and Ms. Sonya

Chaudary – Health Educationist, MALC) on Saturday, 15th

April, 2017 for social work students from Sindh University,

Jamshoro. 85 Students along with their faculty members

attended the workshop where they learned about Leprosy.

The students were also taught to diagnose Leprosy at an

early stage and reduce deformity rate in new affected

persons. The session started with a welcome speech which

was given by Mr. Karamat who appreciated the efforts of

Sindh University faculty members for the overwhelming

participation and for bringing gifts for persons affected by Leprosy, after which the lecture on Leprosy officially

commenced. It was a very interactive session, where students were keen on asking different questions concerning

Leprosy. Once the lecture was concluded, the students along with their faculty members presented gifts to the persons

affected by Leprosy, who became very content, after which the workshop successfully came to an end.

HBF SUPPORTS EYE CAMPS IN BARKHAN AND ZHOB-BALOCHISTAN

Two surgical eye camps were held by MALC at Barkhan and Zhob- Balochistanthrough Habib Bank Foundation’s support.

• In Barkhan, 1,580 patients consulted the OPD, 150 surgeries were conducted.(122 Cataract surgeries with IOL implants & 28 minor surgeries).

• In Zhob, 4,194 patients consulted the OPD, 170 surgeries were conducted.(157 Cataract surgeries with IOL implants & 13 were minor surgeries).

There was an overwhelming response at the free camps, for which we expressour sincere appreciation to HBL Foundation for helping us in helping others.

HBF SUPPORTS MALC FOR CONDUCTING EYE CAMPS, PURCHASE OF EQUIPMENT AND ADOPTING HEALTH CENTERS

Habib Bank Foundation supports MALC by presenting a cheque for conducting Surgical

Eye Camps in Balochistan, purchasing operating microscope and Auto refractometer,

and adopting three health centers in Gilgit Baltistan. A small ceremony was held where

Mr. Abid Rafiq Ghazi- CEO, Habib Bank Foundation along with his team members

presented a cheque to Sr. Dr. Ruth Pfau to carry out the activities in the proposed

areas. We are very grateful to Habib Bank Foundation for their continued support.

MALC HOLDS GENERAL HEALTH CAMPS IN COLLABORATION WITH K-ELECTRIC

A series of six General Health camps were held by MALC in collaboration with

K-Electric in various areas of Karachi including Saddar, Lyari and Orangi (Chanesar

Goth, Sultanabad, Toori Bangash, Macchar Colony, Agra Taj and Bhittaiabad).

Doctors and paramedics from MALC conducted the OPD and provided medicines for

general health issues free of charge to 1,839 patients who accessed the camps.

We owe our sincere gratitude to K-Electric for providing us the opportunity.

EYE CAMP AT ZHOB

GENERAL HEALTH CAMP AT TOORI BANGASH, ORANGI

On 15th April, 2016, Nahid, a 4 year old girl who wasunable to see from both eyes visited the free surgicaleye camp at Chaman, Balochistan with her family. Dr.Abdul Bari Kakar checked her and found that she hadcataract in her eyes. She was advised to be operatedotherwise would turn blind. We asked her family ifthey could bring her to Quetta for the operation butthey informed us that it would be difficult. So wecontacted the Anaesthetist immediately who gave heranesthesia. Dr. Bari then performed surgery forcataract removal which was a success.

The next day Nahid’s bandages were opened. Onbeing exposed to light the very first time she wasterrified and held her face as it was too bright for hereyes. Her family members hugged her; they wereecstatic. When Dr. Bari checked her, she was able tosee from both eyes. Nahid was content now as shewas able to see everything clearly.

Dr. Bari gave her medication for two weeks and asked her to return on 29th April, 2016 for a follow up. When she was checked on 29th April, 2016 she was doing well with good eye sight.

EYE CAMPS AT GANDAKHA, BHAG & NUSHKI SUPPORTED BY HBF AND PROVINCIAL LEPROSY AND BLINDNESS CONTROL PROGRAMME

With the support of Habib Bank Foundation (HBF) and Provincial Leprosy and Blindness Control

Programme-Govt. of Baluchistan, MALC held three eye camps at Gandakha on 13th & 14th

March, 2017, at Bhag on 17th & 18th March, 2017 and at Nushki on 25th & 26th March, 2017.

• In Gandakha, 1,316 patients consulted the OPD & 130 surgeries were conducted (103 Cataract removal & 27 minorsurgeries)

• In Bhag, 1,544 patients consulted the OPD & 130 surgeries were conducted (116 Cataract removal & 14 minor surgeries)• In Nushki, 1,188 patients consulted the OPD & 58 surgeries were conducted (51 Cataract removal & 7 minor surgeries)

NBP CONTINUES SUPPORT FOR FEMALE WARD AT MALC HOSPITAL
