Radio To Taylor: You Belong With Me The media assault for Taylor Swift’s Speak Now may be unprecedented in scope. As a national, if not international, event, the launch comes in an era marked by even more pervasive media and pseudo-media outlets than at any time in history. To wit: Tonight’s triple play on MTV Networks (CMT/MTV/VH1), old grey dames like the Times (New York and Los Angeles versions) and quite literally millions of fans tweeting, facebooking and otherwise socialing (we made up a word). Jimmy Dean’s ascension to stardom from an impoverished childhood in Olton, TX, a stint in the military and early Washington, DC area radio and TV appearances was punctuated by musical interludes from Shawn Camp, who sang the 1953 hit “Bumming Around,” Hall of Famers Roy Clark and Charlie McCoy collaborating on 1962’s “Little Black Book” and Daily & Vincent with Statler Brother-esqe harmonies on “Harvest Of Sunshine.” The “inspired casting of the night” honor, however, goes to whoever decided to recruit Trace Adkins and the Jordanaires to do Dean’s self-penned 1961 country and pop No. 1, “Big Bad John.” Hall of Fame member Bill Anderson welcomed Dean into the elite group with an incredibly heart-felt and eloquent speech filled with personal anecdotes of time spent with one of his best friends. “I doubt I ever had a closer friend, but I know I never had a better one,” said Anderson. Dean’s greatest contributions to this format came not from his charted songs, but from the country artists he put on the stage of his network TV show. Anderson recalled the late Roger Miller sending Dean a gold door-knob to “thank him for the million doors he opened” after Dean had him on the show to sing “King of the Road.” Anderson added, “If you have ever made any part of your living from Country music, Jimmy Dean opened doors for you, too.”

My Tunes: Music ThaT shaped My Life

Average Joe’s Entertainment’s Joe Schuld discusses his most important songs, artists or concerts:1. The Beatles/ I Saw Her Standing There, I Want To Hold Your Hand: When I was in second grade (1965), I convinced three guys to join me onstage for a school talent show. We all brought instruments, but we only had an accordion in my house. We lip-synched “I Want To Hold Your Hand”, then got mobbed during recess. I lived in Beatlemania. I talked the guy with the guitar into letting me have

it when we did “I Saw Her Standing There” after recess. This time, we sang with the record and I belted it out. After that, I bought every Beatles record as soon as it came out. I was hooked!2. Neil Young, Rust Never Sleeps Tour: I was grounded in the music of Neil Young when I was at Central Michigan University, two hours from Pine Knob. I remember it like it was yesterday. When we’re having a beer, ask me about this night if I haven’t told you already. All I can say is, I ended up in the second row with blood running from my palm down my forearm as I was thrusting my arm into the air and in a trance as Neil played “Tonight’s The Night.” Everyone there died and went to heaven, led by Neil.3. Jimmy Buffett, Kansas City: I have seen him play more than any artist I have not worked with, even though he’s only been to Kansas City once in the 20 years I’ve lived there. I love the way I can be at home and escape in his music at the same time. 4. Toad The Wet Sprocket, William Jewell College: I saw an inordinate amount of unbelievable musical moments at Columbia Records, including The Rolling Stones at Toad’s Place in New Haven, CT. But Toad The Wet Sprocket in an ancient, small auditorium at William Jewell College was a moment frozen (there was even snow) in time. “All I Want” was my stand, and it was amazing to see their career take off with that song.5. Jerrod Niemann, Stampede, Manhattan, KS: The first time I saw Jerrod play. It was a hot, humid Kansas day, and he played two shows in the blazing sun. He entertained the crowd like nobody’s business, mixing his songs with the perfect covers. When Category 5 folded, he was concerned his career was over, but I told him it was just beginning and it was time to make the album he wanted with no rules other than a few singles. You can imagine what I thought when I first heard Judge Jerrod & The Hung Jury. • An album you played or listened to incessantly: The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds and Bob Marley’s Exodus.• One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: “Lord Is It Mine” by Supertramp.

the Medallion on behalf of the Williams family, which was represented in the Ford Theatre by his sons Tim and Gary and their families.

NAB Radio Board Endorses Performance Fee Conditions The NAB Radio Board voted today to advance from its “ongoing dialogue” with the music industry-backed musicFIRST Coalition, as reported in August (CA 8/6), to a specific “good faith” legislative “term sheet” that could end the heated, protracted debate with the music industry. If approved by the MFC, such a settlement would help pave the way for broadcasters to avoid the scenario of potentially higher payments of a Performance Royalty Act pending in Congress The proposed royalties range between 0.25% and 1.0% of station net revenues, and are tied to whether Congress mandates radio receiver chips in mobile phones, as well as inclusion of

Anderson talked to Dean on the phone not long after Jimmy was informed of his election to the Hall. Dean told him, “Billo, I never thought I’d make it. I figured I pissed-off too many people down there (Nashville.).” Choked with emotion a number of times during his introduction, Anderson closed by saying, “I wish all of you cold have known the Jimmy Dean I knew. His song says Big John was a ‘big, big man.’ He didn’t have a thing on Jimmy Dean.” Dean’s daughter Connie Dean Taylor, the subject of Dean’s 1962 hit “To A Sleeping Beauty,” accepted the Medallion on behalf of family present, including Dean’s wife of 19 years Donna Meade Dean. Taylor kissed the medal and looked skyward as she told the assembled, “He loved country music and he loved to entertain. But I believe what he loved most about his profession was the many friends he made. He always said what a lucky and fortunate man he was.” Don William’s musical tribute featured the last minute addition of “Amanda,” performed by tour mates Joey + Rory. That song replaced “Help Yourself To Each Other,” which Williams had been scheduled to sing. Del McCoury and his band put their fabulous high-harmony bluegrass touches on “Lord, I Hope This Day Is Good,” Chris Young delivered a great rendition of “I Believe In You,” and, before singing “You’re Just A Country Boy,” Alison Krauss said, “I’m crazy about Don Williams. I always thought he sounded somewhere between Santa and the Almighty.” CMHoF & Museum Executive Director Kyle Young called the gang at Jack Clement’s Jack Music and JMI Records – which included Allen Reynolds, Bob McDill, Wayland Holyfield and Garth Fundis – “the original Music Mafia,” and recounted that Williams’ rise from songwriter, demo singer and songplugger to stardom began when it was suggested that since no one else wanted to cut his songs, perhaps Williams should record them himself. Hall of Famer Jim Foglesong, who signed Williams to Dot Records in 1974 and oversaw his recording career into the MCA years through 1985, inducted Williams into the Hall, noting, “This is the biggest of the big.” Manager Robert Pratt accepted

HD Radio chips in cell/smartphones, when feasible. Absent such legislation, stations would pay 0.25% of net industry revenue, representing the percentage of radio-activated mobile phones in the marketplace. If and when radio-capable phones are at the 75% penetration level, the royalty rate would rise to 1%. If those chips were installed, the NAB is seeking a reduction in its online royalty rates through 2016. Without such technology, the rates would remain status quo until half of mobile phones have chips. The tone of the NAB is decidedly more conciliatory than in the past, starting with no longer referring to the proposed royalty as a “tax.” NAB Joint Board Chairman Steve Newberry said, “No broadcaster that I know relishes paying a new fee, but the terms of this agreement provide badly needed certainty for our business to move forward, and the positive of this accord far outweigh the negatives.” NAB President/CEO Gordon Smith added, “Radio stations, artists and the record labels have more commonalities than differences, and adoption of legislation that reflects this Term Sheet will provide a framework for untold new revenue opportunities for both sides.” The proposal also calls for musicFIRST to recognize the “unparalleled promotional value of terrestrial radio airplay.” NAB says the MFC already supports a mandate regarding the chips. However, the Consumer Electronics Association is

Taylor Swift Speak Now (Big Machine) For her third release, Swift is the sole writer on all 14 tracks. “These songs are made up of words I didn’t say when the moment was right in front of me,” Swift writes in the liner notes. “Each is written with a specific person in mind telling them what I meant to tell them in person.” While she won’t

reveal who each song is about, seemingly random uppercase letters in the lyrics offer clues. The Target exclusive Deluxe Edition features additional tracks “Ours,” “If This Was A Movie,” “Super Man” as well as acoustic versions of “Back To December,” “Haunted” and “Mine.” The lead single’s music video and a behind-the-scenes feature about the piece are also included. Swift and Nathan Chapman co-produced.

Radio To Taylor (continued from page 1)CBS Radio/Houston VP/Programming and KILT PD Mark Adams, who also oversees Top 40 KKHH & Hot AC KHMX, has a unique perspective on formatic embrace of Swift. “While Taylor’s popularity is undeniably mainstream, I feel she’s fully embraced and recognized as the country superstar that she is,” Adams says. “We have both a CHR and a Hot AC in our Houston cluster and both stations play Taylor. Actually, the week I took over KILT was the week all three stations added ‘Mine’ on the same day. “That said, I feel as if there’s more of a song-by-song determination going on at the other formats while Country is more predisposed to embrace Taylor’s music as a whole. There have certainly been a number of Taylor Swift records that have been big hits for Country that may have not been played, or at least played as heavily, at other formats.” “We think it’s very important to have some ownership of Taylor,” KKWF/Seattle PD Mike Preston says. “In fact, Entercom did a program with Big Machine called the Taylor Swift Takeover that aired today at 12noon in all Entercom Country markets after about 2 weeks of on air and online build up. Now that it’s aired, we’ve got all the elements, plus bonus material and video, on our websites, as well as a group contest to send someone to London with Taylor. As a lead up, we were able to “win it way before you can buy it” and sent someone to her album launch festivities this week in LA. Interestingly, our Entercom CHR/Hot AC stations are doing a similar program as well.” KEEY/Minneapolis PD Gregg Swedberg keeps it simple. “She’s a country artist,” he says. “If you check airplay at Top 40, ‘Mine’ won’t be anywhere near a No. 1 record and, if in Borchetta I trust (and I do), it will be No. 1 in our format. It’s important that we don’t chase her away. Why would you? We’re not so big that we can afford to chaseanyone away. “We did all sorts of contesting for this release,” Swedberg continues. “We’ll support it as long as there’s guitars, fiddles and no pre-generated beat. We do talk inside our cluster, and that’s how I know that ‘Mine’ isn’t as hot as her previous Top 40 stuff was, and who knows how long they’ll be interested in Taylor. I’d just tell Taylor, ‘As long as you want to keep making music the way you do, you belong with me.’” CAC

Here is the first of two weeks’ worth of Summer 2010 diary Arbitron ratings, listed alphabetically by market. Next week’s Country Aircheck Weekly will include the rest of the Summer reports. It was a strong season for Country radio in diary metros, with 62 stations up (57.4%), 41 down (38.0%) and five unchanged (4.6%). Equally impressive is that those stations which went up averaged a 1.1-share increase, while those declining lost an average 0.8 share. With a few exceptions, only stations achieving at least a 1.0 share are included. Legend: A “+” indicates a Classic Country outlet, a “^” designates Country stations in the same market owned by a single operator and a “t” indicates a tie. An “na” indicates a subscriber-only market, where rankings are not available, or a station programming another format during that ratings period. Client-exclusive ratings are embargoed from publication.
