From the GMs Desk Dear Colleagues, The cold weather has now descended upon us and winter is here, signaling the middle of 2014 - an appropriate time to look back at what has been achieved so far this year. Since the beginning of the year the SA business has commenced providing permanent services to PPG and Roma Mitchell House. We have also increased the scope of work within the SA Health contract to include the Northern Community GP Plus Health Centre. In addition we are supplying guarding services at Penrice Soda Products. In the NT we have been successful in extending our contracts for both the Department of Health and the Department of Justice and we have recently commenced permanent work at the Darwin Marine Supply Base and casual services to SKYCITY Casino. Moving forward, there are opportunities available and we have a very strong focus on adding to our business, and hope to finish the year off strong with some new clients in the SA/NT portfolio. On another note I would like to take this opportunity to say congratulations to all of those people who have received service awards this year, your outstanding commitment to MSS Security and the local community is greatly appreciated. For those invited to the SA Service Awards event I look forward to meeting with you on what will be a delightful evening. Keep up the good work. Matt Burleigh General Manager SA/NT The Guard Post - SA/NT JUNE 2014 ISSUE 20 FROM THE NT Dear NT Team, As the dragonflies descend on the NT it marks the start of the Dry Season for us locals, which in turn is the start of all the functions and markets. It also brings the end of the rains and the start of the cooler weather, time to bring out the winter clothes for those 18 degree days. April and May brought some great news for the NT business, with the Department of Justice and the Department of Health - Darwin Alcohol Assessment Treatment Services both extending our contract’s to provide their security services for a further 12 months respectively. We now also have a full office, with Julie Flint taking full control of the payroll and accounts and Terry Matthews out and about conducting infield audits and assessing each site as our dedicated NT Service Support Manager. Both are doing a fantastic job and I look forward to implementing some further changes within our operation with their support. On another note we have received great feedback from SKYCITY Casino in relation to the TASTE Wine and Food Festival. FROM THE NT Dear NT Team,

As the dragonflies descend on the NT it marks the start of the Dry Season for us locals, which in turn is the start of all the functions and markets. South Australia - Service Support Manager Note Hi All,

First of all I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself; my name is Callum Scaife, Service Support Manager

SA. In my two months of working with MSS Security I have been impressed with the level of experience and expertise

that we offer our clients and seeing this on a daily basis makes me feel proud being a part of the MSS Security Team. I

have met a large number of employee within the healthcare sites but for those I have not had the pleasure of meeting I

endeavour to get out to your sites and catch up with you in the very near future.

Since commencing I have been busy ensuring that I meet and greet as many staff

as possible whilst continuing to conduct regular inspections; in particular I’m

concentrating on learning the operations at each of my relevant sites and focusing

on consistency at these sites. The overall outcome of inspections has been good

and I thank you for the hard work you put in each and every day. Moving forward I

will be focusing the coming months on grooming, in particular hair styling and facial

hair. I would therefore ask you all to familiarize yourself with the relevant

requirements of neatly trimmed and groomed hair, including facial hair, taking in the

consideration of conservative hair styling and the image we are portraying to our

clients and customers. For clarification of the required standards please refer to

your MSS Security Officer Standing Instructions 2013 (white book).

If you do happen to see myself or another Service Support Manager at your site please use this

as an opportunity to speak to us about anything that you believe may need to be brought to the

attention of the Company, including concerns and issues, as well as good news stories or

recommendations you may think can improve the service at your site. If you do not see us on site

and wish to speak with us feel free to contact your Service Support Manager at the office or on

our mobiles.

On a final note I would like to thank you all for being so welcoming over the past couple of months, I look forward to

working with and along side you all.

Callum Scaife

SAFETY UPDATE Hi Everyone!!  We are certainly progressing through the year at a steady pace and the first half of the year has been busy with external audits being conducted across all States and Territories with good results.   The external auditors we had in both the NT and SA were very complimentary of our operations and the professionalism and knowledge of our teams on site.  Thank you to all who assisted in the preparation and attendance at the audit. This great result regarding the review of the management of our safety system is a credit to us all.

HSE Notice Board

We have recently developed a new HSE Notice Board that is available via the MSS Security Website – Employee Portal  We use the HSE Notice Board to post Safety Tips and Alerts, as well as any updates or changes to the Work Health Safety or WorkCover Legislation that occurs in your State or Territory.  The notice board also enables you to access the incident reporting portal and can be utilized to make a safety improvement suggestion or report a safety issue and/or hazard.   We are also able to post your site’s safety news or safe work practices that we would love to share with others. If you have a safety topic, act or photograph of your team we would certainly appreciate hearing from you.  Please send through to the HSE QA Coordinator SA/NT via email: [email protected]

NT SAFETY NEWS The Darwin Operations are surely enjoying the reduced rain and the commencement of their dry season. This is also a great opportunity to have a spring clean of equipment, documents and furniture as they generally have a habit of becoming damp and damaged during the wet season.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is an area we need to ensure is kept clean and hygienic, with safety glasses, gloves and vests etc required to be kept clean and maintained.  The correct and adequate use of PPE is a key control for managing hazards on nearly every job.  Even though PPE is low down on the hierarchy of controls for managing risk, it is often the last line of defence against injury if other controls fail.  Thank you also goes to Toni and her Team for their focus on updating their safety management system and keeping this current. This focus over the last quarter has seen the majority of NT sites have their risk assessment is reviewed and several outstanding corrective actions from the site QA WHSE Inspections are completed.

Good News...  LUCY BARRACLOUGH

During her shift, a member of the public who was being chased by SAPOL officers ran into the foyer of her

site. Lucy blocked entry to the area where staff are located and denied access. Police swooped in and ar-

rested the person. Lucy handled the incident with a calm demeanour and professionalism. Her actions were

appreciated by the Client and MSS Security. GREAT WORK LUCY!!

KEVIN BILSTEIN AND ANTHONY LORENZ

Kevin and Anthony were conducting routine patrols at their remote site when they came across a distressed

site employee. Kevin and Anthony spoke with the employee to find out what they could do to help and

eventually decided they needed to get some assistance for the person. They showed compassion and

quick thinking which played a large part in ensuring the employees personal safety.

WELL DONE KEVIN AND ANTHONY!!

RYAN TOWLER

Ryan Was conducing a routine patrol at the Women’s and Children’s

Hospital when he heard a lady in distress. On investigation he found a

man helping a woman out of a car who was clearly in heavy labour. With-

out delay Ryan took charge of the situation and radioed for assistance

while the partner of the woman ran into the hospital to retrieve help. Ryan

stayed with the woman and ended up catching the newborn in his arms

shortly before medical assistance arrived. Ryan said the experience was

truly overwhelming and that he is grateful to have been a part of the gift

of life. EXCELLENT WORK RYAN!!

NT Service Support Manager Note Hi All,

I have met most of you over the past few months since my commencement in the NT in March but would like to take this opportunity to say it has been a great transition for me from the SA to the NT MSS Security Business.

Our goals for the NT moving forward are exciting and we look forward to your assistance, ensuring that we are able to offer and provide our clients the best possible service.

One thing I have noticed about the NT is the wonderful laid back lifestyle that the Territory presents, and this is great when we are at home and relaxing with friends and family but when we are working we need to ensure we are focussed on the job at hand. The small things such as neat appearance, attire, attitude and continued professionalism are what makes a difference in the community and to our clients.

On another note I would like to thank the personnel who worked at the SKYCITY and Litchfield functions for their professional approach to ensuring that the functions were enjoyed by all and remained incident free.

Last but certainly not least, congratulations to those that completed the recent Custodial Course, this provides additional team members at the Supreme Court and allows the Custodial Officers to enjoy some downtime when required.
