Dear Residents

With the invention of the internet and social media, staying in touch sure has become easy. Gone are the days you can just take the phone off the hook if you don’t want to be disturbed. From Whatsapp to iMessage, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Snapchat, Messenger and email we are bombarded with information – sometimes true information, but a lot of the time, with fake news. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to separate fact from fiction and we’re also losing that personal touch, the face-to-face interactions and connections of yesteryear.

Neighbourliness and community spirit seem to be a thing of the past even though social media makes the world smaller and brings us “closer”. I am privileged to be the editor on a number of residential estate publications and believe me when I tell you, the issues of fake news, un-neighbourly behaviour like speeding and playing loud music into the early hours is endemic to estate living. But what is not common-place anymore is the friendly knock on your neighbour’s door to say hello or welcome. Consideration of fellow community members, children and animals all need to make a come-back as well.

How about making the old school effort of saying hello to your neighbours, slowing down for a child to cross the road and thinking twice before sharing news or information that just might not be true?

Hello to all

Our Estate has been blessed with a massive amount of rain during the last few weeks of autumn. We are into now and still enjoying some welcome thunder showers and intermittent rain. According to some, late rains mean cold winters. I can’t wait for the next summer to arrive again because it’s the season I enjoy the most. But I am looking forward to using the fireplace and enjoying some quality family time in front of the fire. Nothing beats the atmosphere during the cold months.

'n Paar gedagtes rondom Mei maand. Ons jaarlikse Familie dag het plaasgevind op 1 Mei. Elvis Blue, wat geen bekendstelling nodig het nie, het vir ons kom optree. Dankie aan Elvis Blue dat jy ook gehelp het om hierdie byeenkoms ‘n groot sukses te maak. Soos gewoonlik was daar vir die

kinders ‘n klomp aktiwiteite beskikbaar wat hulle elke keer vreeslik geniet. "Blos" het ook na die spreekwoordelike partytjie toe gekom en het hulle "verversings" aangebied. Weereens ‘n groot dag gewees!

8 Mei – Dankie aan almal wat gaan stem het. Veral onder jongmense is daar ‘n kultuur van wegbly. Dit is noodsaaklik en jou grondwetlike reg om te stem. Mag ons land voorspoed ervaar en mag die inwoners van Suid-Afrika met goeie oordeel hulle stemme bring.

Our Estate is really looking fantastic and the new river project has proved to be very successful. The rehabilitation of the banks is also looking very good and it will be maintained each season. After a few heavy down pours it is clear that the work that was done is proper and correct. The Municipality also upgraded one of the inlets and it is making a big difference.

Best of luck to all our scholars and students for the school term ahead. Knowledge is power, so keep up the good work.

Good day Residents

Once more winter has crept up on us and it’s time to get out the winter woollies and light the fire places.

The year so far has been very good as some big projects have been completed and after the last heavy down pours it looks like the changes are working well.

This winter a total clean-up will be done on the Estate, namely cutting of reeds in dams, trimming of all vegetation and trees, cleaning of all river features and servitudes. We are also going to do some extra maintenance like painting of buildings, checking of bridges and jungle gyms.

We had two big functions and both were hugely successful. Thank you all for attending these and for helping us make it even better each time.

A notice will be sent to all soon in order to update you on work done as well any other interesting news.

Thank you to all our Residents for your cooperation in making this one of the best Estates in the area.

I want to take this opportunity to thank all security personnel for their hard work and diligence and all the extra work they do,

the maintenance staff for all their hard work and commitment, as well as the ladies in the Office for their patience and hard work and for always trying to do their best for our Residents. Last but not least, a big thanks goes to all the Directors for their support in getting the Estate where it is today.

Firstly welcome to all our new Residents. I’m sure that you already know that you’re living in the best estate around.

The Easter Egg Hunt was great fun and the Family Fun Day was also a huge success. Seeing all the Residents and their family and friends who attended this function on 1 May proves that our recipe is working. Thank you to all who helped make this another very successful event enjoyed by all.

I have to say a special thank you to Helgard and Vincent from Security who helped get everything ready in time. Without your muscles and willingness to assist it would have gone much slower. Thank you guys!

On the 2005 photo you can clearly see where Vineyard Village is situated at the other end of the Estate. In the 2019 photo you can barely see the roof tops.

What’s the secret to enjoying more blooms and greater harvests? Pollination! To increase the

pollination of your garden plants, consider a backyard bee house for solitary bees.

Unlike honey bees, Solitary Bees are very docile and up to three times more effective as pollinators. (They are the most diverse species of the aculeates (a stinging insect group that includes the bees, wasps, and ants) and due to their wide range of feeding habits and high incidence of polyphagy (feeding on a variety of foods) they visit and thereby pollinate a broad range of different plants. They are either stingless (males) or couldn’t be bothered to sting you unless you ‘attack’ them (main reason being that they do not have a hive to protect). No, you won’t get any honey, but you will enjoy more flowers, thriving plants, and healthier vegetables and fruit in your garden!

Solitary Bees form the largest percent of the bee population, 90% of bees are solitary. There are about 20 000 – 30 000 species worldwide. There are over 1,000 known species in Southern Africa.

Solitary Bees are lone bees, which means they do not belong to a colony. Generally, they are absolutely harmless.

The female Solitary bee lays an egg in a ‘compartment’ (in a hole) and seals it with pollen and nectar to provide brekkie for her babies once they hatch. She then flies away (after making one or more nests) and dies.

The males usually emerge first and are ready for mating when the females emerge. Providing nest boxes for solitary bees is increasingly popular for gardeners.

Why a Bee Hotel?

Solitary bees need a place to live that’s dry and safe!

Around the world bee abundance and diversity is dwindling, hence the need for us to lend a helping hand. A Bee Hotel provides a desperately needed hollow for them.

To really enjoy the Hotel hang it eye level (or lower if you have kiddies). Find a dry spot that is in dappled sunlight. Ideally, place it on a wall around the house, in the boma or under the cover of the veranda facing the garden. Hang it where you can see it and enjoy it. Take pride in knowing that you are making a valuable contribution to the protection and conservation of our bees in the country.

Carpenter bees are considered a pest by many, and you can often find them making nest holes in roof rafters and other exposed wood. However, these big, docile solitary bees are very important pollinators and should be protected instead of destroyed. A larger, thicker bee hotel with a bigger diameter entrance hole affixed close to your roof would be very inviting to them and may keep them from invading your rafters.

Jump, slide, bounce, repeat!

This year's Easter Egg Hunt in Boardwalk Meander Estate was definitely one for the books. With over 60 children taking

part in the fun, the day was a massive success. Other exciting activities such as pony rides, face painting and the slip 'n slide ensured that there was never a dull moment. The endless laughter and high pitched screams of pleasure that filled the playground was music to every parent's ears. A big thank you goes to all who participated – from the kids’ right through to the sponsors.

FAMILY FUN DAY

On the 1st of May, the Family Day broke Boardwalk Meander records with an incredible turnout of over 600 people!

Residents could buy a ticket for the spitbraai or pack their own picnic and enjoy the special day with friends, while being entertained by Elvis Blue. The 2010 Idols winner performed songs that had everyone clapping (and even singing) along. This included songs from his latest album to his famed "Lighthouse" song.

The day was perfect for Residents of Meander to relax, have a good time, and catch up with old friends – and to meet new neighbours. As always, the kids were provided with fun activities that kept them entertained the whole day. Our teens had a good time visiting the photobooth to take a picture or ten.

Congratulations to Riani and Pieter Ferreira for winning the prize of the Best Looking Table (see picture), and a huge THANK YOU to Board Member Jan-Louis Fischer who put together this amazing day, with the assistance of Estate Manager John Moore, as well as René Koeleman.

We appreciate you and you make us proud to be living in this extraordinary Estate!

So, there we all sat in the reception of the vet… that is now the Britz family. It was quiet, apart from my daughter’s

heart breaking cry. We were all there… to say goodbye to Mosca.

Pets teach us about life. Well, Mosca taught us a lot!

Mosca was a beautiful Husky dog that could run like the wind. Mosca was a part of our family, even before our kids were born.

So, WHEN do you realise that pets teach you about life? When they are not there anymore… When we had to say goodbye to Mosca to leave to pet heaven, we all cried. His age caught up with him and we had to accept that he had to go.

In Boardwalk Meander, I am sure that there are many residents who believe pets are just one big responsibility, that THEY are the reason for your allergies and that THEY destroy your house and garden. Not to mention the irritation when they bark and keep you awake at night.

But, I would like to prove them wrong. I have seen the joy pets bring to our lives. I believe that pets teach us about life and that there are more reasons to own a pet as not to…

Firstly, pets teach children to study better. According to www.pet360.com it is scientifically proven that kids relax in the company of pets. Kids can relax and take in more facts when they study with pets in the room with them.

My kids just loved it when Mosca lay at their feet when they were studying. Mosca never got impatient with them when they forgot something. He would just put his head down at their feet and then they knew that they had to study it again.

Secondly, did you know that pets are children’s best friends. Children share their stories and their feelings with their pets, especially when they are sad.

I loved it when Mosca tilted his head and looked at me when I was sad. It is as if he just knew... He would lick me in the face or neck to make me feel better.

Pets teach children to care. People say that pets are too great a responsibility, but caring for pets is a great way to teach children responsibility. We all need to be responsible adults one day, don’t we?

Although, many people believe their allergies are due to the pets in their houses, it is proven that pets keep children healthy.

Dr Dennis Ownby did a study with 474 babies to the age of 7. On jamanetwork.com, Dr Ownby proved that children who grew up with more than one animal, are less allergic to dust and are even less likely to be asthmatic.

So, mom and dad, it is NOT as unhealthy as you think if your pet sleeps on your bed!

My last point:

Pets keep families together. Pets help families to learn to share and spend time together.

Our new dogs, two beautiful German Shepherds, Aru and Kyra do exactly that!

In our family of four, we all have to take turns to play with the dogs and give them attention. We even share our dogs with our neighbour’s kids who often ask if they can come and play with them.

I am pleased to announce that two families we know well, also residents in Boardwalk Meander, are both new dog owners. Through all the potty training and moaning about their destroyed gardens, the joy of owning a pet far exceeds the pain of having to train them.

Here is my advice:

If you are stressed, feel lonely, feel sad or if you are bored, get a pet! Pets teach us a lot about life and makes a huge difference in our lives!

We are so blessed with such a large variety of birds in our beautiful Estate, but they are not restricted

by our boundary walls and therefore we must enjoy their presence while they are here. As such, we will soon see our Swallows migrating to warmer countries until they return with the blossom of spring.

We are also very fortunate to have dams on the Estate that attract specific species of water birds such as the Heron. The Heron are mostly long-legged freshwater birds, some of which are referred to as Egrets or Bitterns rather than Herons. There are 64 registered species of Herons of which 22 can be found in South Africa.

Some of the regular visitors to Boardwalk are the Black-Headed Heron (Swartkopreier), the Great Egret (Grootwitreier), the Yellow-billed Egret (Geelbekwitreier) and the Goliath Heron (Reusereier). Not to say that these are the only species that can be found in our area.

It’s unfortunate that we still see children throwing stones at our birds and some adults finding joy out of their unleashed dogs chasing our birds. Let’s all contribute to protect these birds and let Boardwalk Meander be a haven for them to feed and breed for all to enjoy.

The Goliath Heron is also known as the Giant Heron and has often been spotted at some of our dams, praying on fish such as Carp and Kurper.

The heron hunts by standing in the shallow water and watching the water at its feet. It catches the fish with a very rapid movement when it gets close enough and then swallows it whole. It can swallow fish of up to 30cm and although it can catch larger fish of up to 50cm with its massive bill, it will not be able to swallow such a large fish. On average, it catches about 2 – 3 fish per day.

The Goliath Heron is the largest of all Herons with a wingspan of 185–230 cm, a weight of 4–5 kg and a height of 120–152 cm. In comparison, the average height of a 10-year old boy is 137cm.

They are majestic in flight with their characteristic broad wings that beat slowly and deeply.

It’s highly territorial and when two of them are seen together, it’s most likely to be a breeding pair. The male and female look similar and it’s very difficult to spot the difference in gender.

Breeding happens normally between November and March and they build their nest with large sticks either in trees overhanging the water or on the ground under a thick bush. They lay on average 3-4 eggs and incubation is between 24–30 days. The young will leave the nest at about 5 weeks, but the parents can take care of their young for up to 7 weeks.

GARDEN PROJECT

Dear Residents

With winter on its way, the Committee has been hard at work in the first part of the year planning the future projects and finishing off the projects in progress.

Entrance 1 of Vineyard Village is nearing completion. The addition of a water feature and an arch to provide some shade for the garden table makes this the ideal area to sit, relax and enjoy the ambiance of our beautiful Village.

You’d have noticed the closure of the electrical boxes with a neat wooden structure that still provides necessary access however is no longer an eyesore.

The Committee has identified the five projects to complete in 2019, namely:

1. Finishing touches to Entrance 1. 2. The circle at Units 58,94,103 en 80.3. The wall between Units 11 and 12.4. The garden bed between Units 136 and

144.5. The garden situated near Unit 57.

The Committee is also looking at the revamping Entrance 2 of Vineyard Village however as this forms part of the Estate’s ground needs to be discussed with the HOA for their input .

Here are a few myths about the winter solstice to set you straight before the longest night of the year.

THE WINTER SOLSTICE IS THE LONGEST NIGHT OF THE YEAR

So, yes, the winter solstice is the longest night of the year, but only if you live in the Northern Hemisphere. If you live in the Southern Hemisphere, your winter solstice is between June 20 and 22. Yes, this may seem obvious, since each hemisphere is on the opposite side of the planet, but hey, a quick geography lesson never hurt anyone.

PEOPLE DON'T EVEN CELEBRATE THE WINTER SOLSTICE

Sure, the winter solstice happens at a pretty dark and cold time of the year for most of us up here in the Northern Hemisphere. Plus it's only a few days before a certain other holiday that's a little bit, um, more popular, but that doesn't mean people don't celebrate the winter solstice in other parts of the world.

Believe it or not, there are tons of spiritual and Pagan practices that people perform to celebrate the winter solstice, many of them similar to the festivities we usually tie to the new year holiday and Christmas: feasts, gift-giving, and celebrations over the new (solar) year.

THE EARTH IS THE CLOSEST TO THE SUN DURING THE WINTER SOLSTICE

The Earth does not orbit the sun in a perfect circle; rather, it works in an elliptical shape, so that there's a point in the year when Earth is closest to the sun, and a point at which it's farthest from the sun. The funniest thing about this is that neither of those times are related to the winter or summer solstice.

Earth is closest to the sun around Jan. 7, and farthest from the sun around July 7. The more you know, y'all.

THE WINTER SOLSTICE IS ALL ABOUT DARKNESS

On the contrary, much of the winter solstice is about lightness and rebirth. One of the most popular Pagan myths surrounding the winter solstice is about the Norse Goddess Frigga, who gave birth to her "young sun" on the winter solstice, a birth that is viewed as giving light to darkness.

For this reason, the longest night is also known in northern Europe as the "Mother's Night," a day focused on rebirth, light, and forward movement.

See? Winter isn't that bleak, people! You just need to channel your inner Frigga.
