working at NSFC?

I just love the ever-changing

landscape of education in

general. There is never a dull

moment and this allows for

flexibility and creativity when

developing new ideas.

Favourite book ?

Hello magazine. Who has time to sit and read a book

these days?!

Favourite film ?

The Elephant Man. Treves brings Merrick into his

home and discovers that his rough exterior hides a

refined soul - a bit like me really! (The refined soul

that is; I don’t have a Merrick at home).

Describe yourself in three words .

Organised, controlling, loud.

Which three words do you think your

colleagues would use to describe you?

Organised, positive, direct.

Which actress would play you in a film about your

life?

Meryl Streep. I think she would be particularly good

at portraying the many different sides to my

character, particularly ‘Musical Pam’ which is me in

front of the mirror singing loudly into a hair brush.

Describe your perfect Saturday

Ideally, I would lie in until around 9am then enjoy a

healthy fry up (or ‘grill up’, as it is in my house) with

my husband Eamonn and kids Abbie and Lewis

(when he’s home from university). Then a nice long

walk – country or coast - with Eamonn and our

British Bulldog, Bonnie.

On Saturday night, I might enjoy a large glass of

Pinot Grigio and an Indian takeaway - and I’ll

probably finish off a bar of Cadbury’s Dairy Milk

Whole Nut.

I’m a girl with simple tastes!

In each issue we’ll shine the spotlight on a colleague. If

Access to A Level student Demi Leigh Watson decided to donate her long locks to the Little Princess Trust, which makes wigs for children undergoing cancer treatment. She was moved to go under the shaver to celebrate the news that her young niece Ruby is in remission from leukemia. Demi Leigh said: “The Little Princess Trust has been providing real hair wigs for young boys and girls who have lost their own hair because of cancer treatment since 2006. “It does such brilliant work and I wanted to celebrate the fact that Ruby is in remission. Shaving my head and donating the hair seemed like a perfect way to support it.”

Liam Cartwright and Kate Palmer took part in debating issues including the need for a ‘curriculum for life’ and tackling racial and religious

discrimination.

Kate said:

“Becoming a Member of UK Youth Parliament has given me working experience of how politics and democracy

operates in the UK - and now that funding has been secured to fund UK Youth Parliament until 2020, even more young people have been given the chance to get involved.”

Liam led the debate on the longstanding issue of public transport.

He said: “Becoming a Member of UKYP has meant that I have had the opportunity to get involved in issues that directly affect me, as well as the constituents I represent.

“The current issues surrounding public transport have been affecting young people in

Newcastle for a long time, so I was pleased to be able to

debate the matter with over 250 of my peers.”

Micah van Tuyl, A Level

Government and Politics teacher said:

"I am delighted with Liam and Kate's work as MYPs.

“They represent the very high levels of interest and

enthusiasm that many of our

students have in political issues and our democratic system, particularly in light of this year's landmark political events."

A team of Newcastle Sixth Form College A Level Maths and Further Maths students took part

in the annual Senior Team Maths Challenge (STMC) competition, organised in conjunction

with the UK Maths Trust and Further Maths Support Programme.

The NSFC team, made up of students Olivia Moran, Denis Mullaj, Thaqeeb Saleem and Jenny

Jobson, came second after completing several rounds of challenging questions.

The STMC is a competition testing mathematical, communication and teamwork skills, and

students compete against teams from other schools and colleges from their region.

Is there anyone out there?

14th Astronomer Royal, Sir Arnold Wolfendale, visited NSFC to discuss the search for little green men.

The talk, hosted by Astronomy

enrichment students, was his first at the College.

Sir Arnold described how projects such as S.E.T.I. (The Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) were, at one time, the

laughing stock of astronomy, with

opinion only changing after the success of the Kepler space telescope. Kepler has found thousands of alien planets round other stars, many within 50 light years

from Earth.

Sir Arnold said: “Some scientists are of the view that there are so many stars in our galaxy, that even if a tiny percentage have suitable planets, life must exist on some of them.

“There is no real reason why this should be the case, however. There are up to 400 billion stars in our galaxy, so if the

probability of complex life emerging is less than 1:400 billion which it might be, then there is no reason to think there is life in our galaxy.”

Members of the Admissions and Marketing team recently attended a Labour Market

Information event which provided insights into both the current state of the local labour

market and developments in the collection and delivery of LMI to young people. A main theme

was the growth of the digital arts industry in the North East, with emerging careers in not only

in computing and the related creative industries , but also in the allied business and

administration functions.

For A Level students studying arts and humanities subjects where they may struggle to see the

connection between their academic studies and ‘real world’ work, information that

demonstrates that there are jobs in the region they can use their qualifications to help them

attain , is extremely valuable .
