This week (10th June - 14th June) our KS2 pupils have been away on a residential to Shenley Lane, St Albans. They have all been having an amazing time and have not stopped! Activities have included water zorbing, 'It's a knockout' and a night hike. Their behaviour has been reported as exemplary, in particular how well our old pupils support the younger pupils. The Early Years class have also been out and about and have visited Willow Farm in Hickling. They had an amazing time learning all about life on a farm. The children found out all about the different crops that are grown on a farm and even got to hold a baby chick. The highlight of the day was of course the tractor and trailer ride. The next few weeks continue to be busy with rehearsals for our whole school production, a federation sports day and a trip to the Norfolk Show. Natalie Butcher (Head of School)

We often hear the muntjac deer calling when we are working on the land down Catfield Common, Muntjac tend to be most active between dawn and dusk, but calling can be effective all day, so allows you to observe, stalk, photograph and enjoy Muntjac, all day. Your position is important – try to ensure you are downwind of the deer, keeping a solid backdrop to your position will also help. Muntjac are often effectively called using a Roe call such as the Butollo Blatter and the Butollo Reed. Calling Muntjac can often be quite dramatic with the animals closing your position quickly and showing a lot of interest in you and your call! Cuckoo spit is a white frothy liquid secreted by the nymphs of a sap-sucking true bug known as a froghopper. They are also known as spittlebugs. Symptoms are blobs of white frothy liquid develop on young stems and leaves of a range of plants in late spring and summer, each blob contains a creamy white insect nymph up to 4-6mm (¼in) long. Usually plant growth is unaffected, but, if the nymph has been feeding at the shoot tip, this may cause some distorted growth. Despite the name, it does not actually come from a bird, but is created by a small insect called a froghopper. The name originates from the coinciding dates of the appearance of the foamy substance on plants and the arrival of the cuckoo.

Foxglove, also called Digitalis purpurea, is a common biennial garden plant that contains digitoxin, digoxin, and other cardiac glycosides. These are chemicals that affect the heart. Digitalis is poisonous; it can be fatal even in small doses. It was the original source of the drug called digitalis. Foxglove is a native of Europe it was first known by the Anglo-Saxon name foxes glofa (the glove of the fox), because its flowers look like the fingers of a glove. This name is also thought to be related to a northern legend that bad fairies gave the blossoms to the fox to put on his toes, so that he could muffle his footfalls while he hunted for prey. The legend may account in part for some of the common names of digitalis: dead man's bells, fairy finger, fairy bells, fairy thimbles, fairy cap, ladies' thimble, ladyfinger, rabbit's flower, throatwort, flapdock, flopdock, lion's mouth, and Scotch mercury. Foxglove was first introduced to the United States as an ornamental garden plant. During the first year, foxglove produces only leaves. In its second season it produces a tall, leafy flowering stalk that grows 3–4 ft tall. In early summer, many tubular, bell-shaped flowers bloom; they are about 2 in long and vary in colour from white to lavender and purple. Foxglove was originally used for congestive heart failure and atrial fibrillation (chaotic contractions across the atrium of the heart). Foxglove helps the muscles of the heart to contract, reduces the frequency of heartbeats, and lowers the amount of oxygen the heart needs to work. The cardiac glycosides in foxglove block an enzyme that regulates the heart's electrical activity. The dried leaves, ripe dried seeds, and fresh leaves of the one-year-old plant, or the leaves of the two-year old plant are the parts that were used in medicine.

Our case this month is a rather special young dog called Alvin. He is a very fit and energetic 3 year old Springer Spaniel Cross with no history of illness until recently, when he started occasionally being sick. This was followed by him stopping eating a short while later, very unusual for Alvin. He was brought straight in to see us as his owner had noticed his gums were yellow, or jaundiced. We ran blood tests which demonstrated elevations in all his liver enzymes so proceeded to ultrasound examination of his abdomen. At the time his abdomen looked quite normal and aspirates of his liver demonstrated inflammation of an unknown source. Initially he responded well to intra venous fluids and anti-biotics, but his liver enzymes remained high on blood tests and he started to be sick again. Blood tests were also run for leptospirosis as this is a relatively common cause of hepatitis in dogs, but Alvin has been vaccinated and it was subsequently ruled out. At this point it was determined that Alvin would need liver biopsies. Fortunately these could be performed by key hole surgery which greatly reduced the risk and helped his recovery post surgery. These biopsies indicated that the inflammation had been going on for longer than we could know about and his liver had started to fibrose in places as well. He has started anti-inflammatory medication and is currently still eating well ( a special diet for liver disease) and back out on his walks. He has been a wonderful patient through all of his tests and is a firm favourite in the surgery so we all hope he continues to do well. Although Alvin tested negative for leptospirosis this water borne disease is something that can affect our pets so we strongly recommend vaccinating to prevent it happening.

Revd. Deborah Hamilton-Grey

Sun 28th 9.30 am Morning Worship All Saints’, Catfield,

July – some would say the happiest month of the year, Summer has arrived. Strawberries and cream teas, festival season, Church fetes, tennis, school holidays are approaching, the agricultural year moves through its cycle and the Church Calendar moves through its spiritual cycle. We are almost ready to pause, to rest, to enjoy, to draw near to God. Change is difficult to negotiate we are told. Yet we live in a world that is constantly changing all around us all of the time. Maybe we are better at change than we imagine. The key is to travel lightly, (internally), to let go, to invite God into every situation, after all we are only passing through this world, we are pilgrims and strangers on a journey together, how then shall we live? I thank my God for all of you, especially for those who challenge us. Challenges help us to learn and grow, they are often teaching us the Way of Love. Our attitude to living with challenge should be the same as that of Christ Jesus, who being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, (Philippians 2). Christ made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness, he humbled himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross. Christ is our example. And Christ has already gone to the cross so that we don’t have to, the spiritual battle has already been won, Christ intercedes for us always, he is our advocate. We cannot earn salvation with God, Jesus has already paid the price. Our greatest challenge is to receive this gift of new life that Christ offers us, and to live life in all its fulness. God bless you always, Revd Deborah Hamilton-Grey.

HEALTH & WELLBEING TIME TO SLEEP – PART 3 OF 3 Over the last two months we’ve looked at ways you can change your environment and your lifestyle to give you best the chance of a good nights sleep. Sometimes, however, it is our busy minds that keep us from switching off. Do you find you are often too stressed and wound up from a busy day to sleep or you lie in bed worrying, feeling anxious and start over thinking things? Well there are certain exercises you can try to help relax the mind and to occupy your mind and control your thoughts. TOP TIP FOR CALMING YOUR BUSY MIND Often, I find, when talking to clients, it is 9 out of 10 times, due to a busy mind that they cannot get the sleep they require. Stress, worry, anxiety all play their part. However, there are ways to help. Here are two techniques you can try for slowing down and switching off your mind: SIMPLY BREATH – A BREATHING EXERCISE Here is a simple breathing exercise you can try when you head hits the pillow and you’re ready to sleep.

Focus your mind on your breathing for 3 or 4 breaths. Then take a long deep breath in Exhale fully focussing your mind on your body and how it feels Repeat the inhale and exhale a few times and then slow down the exhale to last

twice as long as the inhale breath If you find your mind wander off just simply bring it back to your breathing.

There are many breathing exercises to be found but this is a simple technique, easy to practice and is a great place to start. A RELAXATION RECORDING I have a FREE progressive relaxation recording which you can try. This recording lasts for approximately 10 minutes and guides you through relaxing the body, focussing the mind on the body and your breathing to take you into a nice peaceful state ready to sleep. Give it a go, you have nothing to lose. To get your FREE copy visit my website www.janeturner.co.uk and go to the “Downloads” page. If after trying everything you can to improve your quality of sleep you find that you are still struggling to sleep then visit your GP to discuss this further. Do not allow your lack of sleep affect your health, mental and physical, as this will affect your quality of life, and none of us want that! If you have any further question about sleep and would like to speak with me further about them, please feel free to contact me at the details below, I am here to help you. FARMING NEWS by A.W.A. - July 2019 I mentioned the Ladybirds last month, but where are the Swallowtail Butterflies this year? I’ve had a few people questioning me this Summer to ask if they’ve been to the right locations to view them when they come away being disappointed. The Wild Carrot plants, upon which the Swallowtail Butterflies lay their eggs, seem to be out of sequence with the hatching Butterflies. Given that to date it’s been a pretty dry Spring one would have expected an abundance of the plants but no. On the other hand leverets are having a great time and hares are already pregnant with their second litter. This is great to see and shows that arable farmers are great at their jobs. If we were doing anything wrong we would not see the abundance of wildlife on our farms both on the ground and in the air. I note the comments in the magazine last month about the use of Neonicotinoids. The comments made refer to experiments by pressure groups looking to ban the products by feeding 50 times the rates used on seeds directly to insects. The comments about maize were from France where they used to use different drills to us where the drill vented to air whereas ours vent to the soil. I think the writer was actually agreeing with me in that the best products should be used. Much of this “data” no doubt came from the Internet and not replicated trials which all farming guidance has to be based on. Just because comments are on the Internet does not make the comments true. Crop agronomy is a specialised area of agriculture and ensures all applications are carried out in accordance with best practice and science. Seed has undergone extensive testing to give us the best genes and resistance, fertilizer use is all geared to the crop being grown and chemicals used to protect the plants have to go through a European registration scheme which includes re-registration after a few years. Crop production is now much better than when I first set out with operator training and MOT’s for application equipment. The introduction of farm agronomists has been a major step forward to ensuring all processes are adhered to. Pig and poultry sectors are also heavily regulated but red meat sectors still seem to be a bit vague on applications. Vets are now required to administer antibiotics in a bid to reduce resistance that might be starting to creep into humans and because new antibiotics are going to be next to impossible to be registered, livestock farmers are feeling the backlash. Wormers and fly repellant products are still freely available and there do not appear to be any checks on their use and where they go once they leave the animal. Within agriculture we actually have a very limited number of products that we are authorized to use in this country and some are finding resistance such as wormers. The result is that the livestock farmer will use the next generation of wormer to control worms in his stock along with rotational grazing. There are 5 generations of wormers and most farmers are using third generation wormers. One farm in Wales has already met with resistance to fourth generation wormer. If that farmer carries on without making changes he will build up resistance to the last generation of wormer and be forced to give up sheep farming. So where should we be going? We should manage our farms to break the worm lifecycle and that probably means grazing animals on arable by-products for part of the year. This is another example of how the current Common Agricultural Policy is encouraging less mixed farming and not delivering the biodiversity that was hoped for. Unfortunately Michael Gove’s great new plan will not achieve the results he is hoping for, because he doesn’t understand why traditional agriculture used to deliver biodiversity through diverse mixed farming. AN EXTRACT OF THE DRAFT MINUTES OF THE ANNUAL MEETING OF CATFIELD PARISH COUNCIL HELD ON WEDNESDAY 5th JUNE 2019 IN THE VILLAGE HALL.

Co-option of Parish Councillor: Two people put their names forward for co-option, Dianne Fernee and Ray Read. Each spoke briefly about themselves. The clerk issued ballot papers. There were eight votes in favour of Mrs Fernee and one for Mr Read. Mrs Fernee then joined the meeting. Public Forum: Mrs Millership reported that residents were concerned about the old Mushroom site on the Industrial State, she said that the Enforcement Board were meeting the following day and this matter would be raised with them. Mr Beckley stated that the Parish Council were trying to be active in improvements to the Industrial Estate and were waiting for feedback from NNDC. Matters Arising: Mr Bishop had written regarding the suggested car scheme, he was reluctant to write anything for the magazine but was happy to give information. Dr Bacon suggested that a scheme would need an individual or small group to run it. Mrs Fernee will write something for the magazine to see if there is any interest in a scheme for the village. Mr Beckley had been to look at the dog bin near to Ludham Road, it is well used and in a good location. There is no obvious alternative site. The clerk will contact NNDC to see if it can be moved a few feet away from the Catfield sign. Dr Bacon suggested that there could be a dog bin near to the Church. The dog walkers circuit goes past the junction near the Church and there is dog fouling in the Churchyard. Mrs Walker proposed that the clerk will investigate the costs, this was seconded by Mrs Wickens with all in agreement. Planning: Planning application PM/19/0680, erection of seven dwellings and landscaping on the Neaves site. The plans for this application had been circulated. There was some discussion regarding the application. It is essential that there is clear visibility around the bend in the road. Dr Bacon reported that a Party Wall Notice had been served, he had completed and returned the Notice. This was issued because the contractors will be building within three metres of the village hall. A surveyor did a detailed survey of the village hall and there is agreement with the developer regarding the boundary. Mr Harris recommended getting the agreement in writing. A response will be sent to NNDC regarding the visibility. Recreations Grounds: A ROSPA check will be carried out during June and the goal post at the playing field will be included. Dr Bacon will little pick for June. Highways: Anglian Water will be dealing with the manhole cover in New Road. Elderbush Lane will be closed for BT works on 24th and 25th June. (cont.)

A full copy of the draft minutes can be obtained from the Parish Clerk. An extract of the minutes can also be viewed on the village website www.catfield.org.uk

(P C Minutes contd.} Footpaths, Staithes & Sandholes: Dr Bacon reported that the sluice bridge from Johnny Crowe Staithe, Sharpe Street to How Hill is now in the open position along with the path across the meadow. Dr Bacon will be taking a walk around Catfield Common in July as part of Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s Commons Walks.

Schools: Ms Johnson reported that the school is still looking to extend their partnership. The staff are working closely with Ludham and Happisburgh. There is a new Year 6 teacher who will be Head of School and a new Business Manager. The children will be going to the Norfolk Show and there will be a church service on 23rd July. Any Other Business: Mr Gardiner stated that the paintings which had been done by Neil Smalley are to be photographed, there is a cost to this and all contributions are welcome. Mr Read (a parishioner) stated that with regard to visibility on the corner opposite the shop the planning permission had stated that the hedge should be no more than one metre above the brick wall. It is now much higher and impedes visibility. The clerk will contact the planning department. The date of the next meeting was set for Wednesday 3rd July at 7.30pm in the village hall.

Catfield Village Hall Companion Dog Show

The “No Dogs Allowed” sign at the playing field next to the Village Hall was ignored for the day as 63 dogs of all shapes and sizes arrived for the 9th Catfield Village Hall Companion Dog Show. Considering the high winds and torrential rain that came along before and after the day, we were really lucky to have a nice warm sunny day for the event. There were lots of Catfield entries but some had travelled further, coming from Lowestoft, Attleborough and Watton. One dog even claimed to have come all the way from the USA but we’re sure that wasn’t just for the day! Thanks go to everyone who came along to put marquee up and those who helped out on the day (including our famous Vegetarian BBQers!), also to our sponsors Gail & Scott at The Crown, Horizon MOT Centre. Ropes Direct and Haines Marine. Special thanks have to go to Elaine David who stepped in to judge at the last minute when our nominated judge could not make it. Elaine had a tough job with so many lovely dogs and in the end she awarded Best In Show to Morgan the Pointer and Reserve Best In Show to Tiger the Australian Shepherd. Best Puppy went to Izzy, who had already earned a 1st prize for The Dog with the Waggiest Tail – it probably hasn’t stopped wagging yet!

Boat Trip raising funds for Norfolk and Waveney Prostate Cancer Support Group.

Dear Parishioners, After last year’s successful boat trip, we are organising another trip this summer, August 11th, on the Southern Comfort. Again departing from the Horning Swan at 6 p.m. and returning at 9 p.m. Tickets will cost £12 each and include a buffet supper. The funds raised from the evening will go to the Norfolk and Waveney Prostate Cancer Support Group. The proceeds from last year’s trip have now gone to help finance diagnostic equipment in the Urology Department at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital which the group have both organised and financed. Again, many thanks for last year’s support. Tickets are again limited so to avoid disappointment, early booking is advisable. Tickets can be obtained from Nigel Gardiner on 01692 580362

Shoreline Report: The Trussell Trust, who founded the Foodbank system, report that over the last financial year demand for Foodbank services has gone up by 13% nationally. The average wait for someone newly granted Universal Credit is 5 weeks. This is one of the gaps that Foodbank fills. Thank you for all you do locally, or at your Supermarket. Did you know it takes 50 litres of water to produce a pint of beer, Wateraid asks us?

In response, one of the biggest drinks manufacturers is working towards reducing that

amount, because we all have to acknowledge that clean water is an increasingly

precious resource and it needs to be valued and saved by us all. Thank you for your

pennies and small change!

When Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen), a bouncer from an Italian-American

neighbourhood in the Bronx, is hired to drive Dr Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali), a

world-class Black pianist, on a concert tour from Manhattan to the Deep South, they

must rely on “The Green Book” to guide them to the few establishments that were then

safe for African-Americans. Confronted with racism, danger, unexpected humanity and

humour, they are forced to set aside differences to survive and thrive on
