OCTOBER DOUBLE ISSUE!

A new album from the Who, simply titled Who, (or, possibly Detour), is their first long player in 13

years, and will be released on the Polydor label on November 22. Endless Wire, their 2006 release, though

welcome after a 24 year layoff from recording, was a bit of a sprawling mess. The band seem to have got-

ten a few more things right this time around.

Perhaps influenced by Who co-producer D. Sardy, Pete Townshend seems to have much better

sense in editing himself this time around. Endless Wire began it’s life as a mini opera EP entitled Wire and

Glass. It was short, punchy, and delivered the goods. By the time it had been fleshed out with more (too

much) material, the resulting album was a hit or miss affair that required two vinyl albums to hold all the

music. This time, less is more. Eleven songs, on a single LP, all the flab cut away, and no overarching

themes or pretentious concepts. The production, judging from the newly issued single track Ball and

Chain, finally gets the sound right for the first time since 1978’s Who Are You: diamond hard, with slash-

ing guitars the song is a blues that sounds gloriously sloppy in a good way (think Join Together).\

In addition to original members Townshend and vocalist Roger Daltrey, the band, such as it is, in-

cludes long time bassist Pino Palladino and drummer Zak Starkey. Starkey (who only appeared briefly on

Endless Wire), is the fire that stokes the engine. Son of Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, he was given his first

drum set and lessons from original Who drummer Keith Moon. He was literally born for the job, and the

band should never have considered recording without him the last time around.

These were the fellows who famously crowed about hoping to die before they got old, and two of

the group did just that. The two remaining members of the band find themselves old men, and as such, face

aging on the current record, much as they did over fifty years ago when they became the collective voice

of a young generation of Mods who had no unifying voice of their own.. In a sense, it’s the only logical

way to approach a new (final?) release from the Who. No odes to romance, no nostalgia for lost youth, just

Pete and Rog raging and rocking about all manner of things from reincarnation to Guantanamo Bay.

Finally, in a brilliant commercial maneuver, the album is housed in a terrifically colorful and im-

pactful Mod cover, courtesy of the great British pop artist Sir Peter Blake, he of Sergeant Peppers Lonely

Hearts Club Band fame, who had also previously designed the cover for the Who’s 1981 Face Dances LP.

Cisco! It’s only forty five dollars for a fifty minute guided trail ride, for adults and children over ten years

of age. Riders will enjoy a little walking and a little trotting through our bucolic trails. A ten dollar, ten

minute guided pony ride for riders ages 5-10 is also available.

cierges set up rides for you, your family, or group. Four horses are available on most days, with multiple

riding times from which to choose. Rides can be booked at any time, day or night for the following day,

ing fall foliage, as the leaves turn color in a fiery display of Mother Nature’s artistry...

Close by: one can see all sorts of beautiful hues simply by taking a

walk to the Villa Roma timeshares toward the stables. Turn around at the

top of the hill and gaze at the valley below.

Near by: drive to the town of Narrowsburg NY, and follow route 97

down through Hawks Nest. Some of the most gorgeous scenery in the

Farther away: some of the best leafing on the east cost can be had

each fall by following the Shawangunk Mountains Scenic Byway to New

Paltz NY. While there, be sure to visit historic Huguenot Street. Some of
