Dear Parents and Carers, Welcome back to Term 4, this term is shaping up to be an incredibly busy one as some of the restrictions have eased. COVID-19 At the end of last term I sent to you a copy of the information we received about some of the restrictions which had been eased for Term 4. This term we were given a bit more clarification around what we can and cannot do. Kindergarten Orientation began this week. We had to abandon Nearly at Nulkaba as it is so late in the year and we needed to see the students for a longer time. We are looking at how we can still hold a COVID safe expo and also the fun activities with their buddies. Make sure you have the seesaw app up and running so you can keep up to date. There were a lot of happy and excited children and many relieved parents. Year 6 Farewell will go ahead - details to be finalised but will be on Thursday, 10 December 2020. Presentation Day/Recognition Assembly will go ahead on Tuesday, 8 December 2020 - details again to be worked out. Stage 2 Camp is on and also we hope a camp for our Leaders and an excursion for Stage 3 will occur as well. It is very important you check emails and seesaw and our website to keep up to date. Lots will be happening. Production is well under way and a note about the cost will be sent out soon. This cost is for the shirt, production costs and the USB with the performances on it. As no parents are still allowed on site this was the best we could do so as to allow the children the opportunity to perform. This term will also involve Leaders Elections, hopefully some sporting events, Stage 3 surf days, NAIDOC celebrations, assessments and reports, Book Fair and Book Week, Children's University Graduations, Interrelate and more. A lot of these events will look different but we are working hard to come up with the best plans that meet restrictions, are COVID safe and support our students and families. Pick up and drop off remains the same and many thanks for making this work so smoothly. Please only enter and exit through Gate 1 if you need to go into the office. We will keep you informed with more information as it comes to hand. Year 6 Area More information and photos will appear later in the newsletter but I would just like to offer my thanks to the small but extremely hard working group who gave up a part of their long weekend to work on the Year 6 area. A massive thank you to Gary Wills, Scott Schilder, Aaron Hare, Matt Zoneff and Paul Hunt for all their hard work in helping to get the Year 6 area up and running – still some work to do but it is looking amazing. Thanks also to staff members, Jaclyn Zoneff and her boys and nephew, Ashley Schilder and her children, Delaney Alston and her mum, Lauren Gray, Kassandra Manolis as well as a massive thank you to our GA Alan Blake who also gave up his Saturday to assist. Well done everyone. Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to Term 4, this term is shaping up to be an incredibly busy one as some of the restrictions have eased.

Year 7 Selective Schools Test If your child is in Year 5 and you are interested in them sitting this test so they can enter a selective High School in 2022 the please see Mrs Petrysen or call the office for further information.

Project Launch Our project launches for all Stages went extremely well on our first day back this term. Students were very excited and are now all actively engaged in all sort of learning around their chosen topic. I look forward to seeing the work they produce. This is our final project for the year and it won't be long before teachers will be looking at our first one for 2021 which traditionally has involved the whole school.

Final Year Reports These will be handed out at the end of Week 9 as has been our tradition. They might look slightly different to this time last year but will contain all the information you need to see how your child has progressed in a very strange 2020.

Disturbing Social Media I am sure you have all heard about some of the very disturbing images that have been on Social media just recently, the following advice has been provided by the DoE.

Advice for Parents The following advice for parents assists in limiting students’ exposure to harmful online content:

Engage in your child’s online activity and discuss the types of apps, websites and games they are viewing to ensure content is age-appropriate

Make use of parental control on devices to help limit your child’s online exposure

Help your child report and block inappropriate content on social media or apps

Encourage your child to talk to you about anything upsetting they view online

Visit www.esafety.gov.au for further advice on apps, social media and online safety issues.

FYI From 2021 there will be two staff development days at the beginning of Term 1 and only one at the end of the year. For 2021 Staff Development Days will be Wednesday, 27 and Thursday, 28 January 2021 with school to begin on Friday, 29 January 2021 for all student in Years 1 - 6. Best Start Times and dates and also Kindergartens first day will be sent out very soon. School will begin a day later and end a day later in Term 4.

Class KC We cannot believe that it is Term 4 of Kindergarten already.

‘What is the Cycle of Life’? Is the big question that KC are currently working on during our Project Based Learning. We are learning lots about the life cycles of different animals and are keen to learn more. The children loved our project launch where they dressed up as explorers. We collected many different bugs on a bush walk of the local bush land. We then played animals games, created some interesting insects and even made a ladybug cookie to eat as a treat. As you can see by their smiles, Kindergarten were super excited to be involved in all activities during the day and even the teachers dressed up as explorers on the day too.

KC have been working extremely hard to rehearse for our production class dance and also our stage boys and girls dances. It is an exciting time and we cannot wait to have it all ready and perform for an audience. Production will look a little different this time, but it will still be as amazing and magical as always. WE CAN’T WAIT!

This week we said goodbye to Mrs Dean, who was finishing her placement with us to complete her teaching degree. We look forward to seeing her around our school teaching and wish her every success in the future. KC will miss seeing you each day Mrs Dean.

Stage 1 What a great start to the term we have had. We kicked off

Term 4 with our Project Launch ‘Uniquely Me’. The students

spent the day doing rotations of Boot Camp with Mrs

Cousins, Cosmic Yoga with Mrs Thorpe, Mindfulness Art with

Mrs Woods and glitter bottles with Ms Ebony and Ms

Bradley. Our new project focuses on the recognition and

celebration of our own unique qualities. The students will be

learning about mindfulness including breathing techniques,

yoga and positive affirmations. We will be doing artworks

relating to our Book Week theme and will be learning how

to write persuasive texts. The children will also be

encouraged to write ‘Tootles’. This is where students write

thank you notes to their classmates throughout the project.

They will then bring them home as a keep sake.

This Term we have also introduced our Weekly Wonders. Each week, one student per class will be chosen for being an

absolute super star. The student will be treated to an award, a huge special sticker and a milkshake! Congratulations to

our winners so far.

In Week 4 we will be performing our Production ‘Far Away’.

The students have been excitedly preparing for their class

and year group dances. We have no doubt that the

production will be a wonderful experience for all involved.

The performance dates are Thursday, 5 and Friday,

6 November 2020. As we are still not allowed to have

parents on site, the students will be performing in front of

the Primary students and teachers. A video of the

performance will be available for the parents.

Following production we will move onto preparing the

Yearly Reports. These reports will be sent home at the end

of the Term.

Towards the end of Term we will engage in Christmas activities and enjoy our Stage 1 Party Day. Further details about

Party Day will be communicated closer to the time.

If you have any questions regarding events or dates, please contact your class teacher directly.

We are looking forward to a wonderful Term 4!

Class 3S 3S are back and ready for a fun filled term of learning! On the first day back, we kicked off our third Project ‘We’re going

on an Adventure’ with an exciting project launch. We have lots to look forward to in our final term of Year Three. In

technology with Mrs Anderson, we have been exploring Virtual and Augmented Reality, it’s been a blast! We have been

working hard on our production class item and cannot wait to perform in Week 4. We also have our camp to Adventureland

Forster in Week 5. 3S have been working hard in class and have enjoyed exploring different types of poetry.

This term will fly by and we are looking forward to enjoying the time together!

Stage 3 It is hard to believe that we are now into Term 4. Before long we will be saying goodbye to our Year 6 students, as they head into High School. As always Term 4 is an extremely busy time for Stage 3. We started with our new project launch ‘How to energise our Earth’. This project will focus on energy, in particular renewable and non-renewable energy sources. The launch was a very hands on and a fun day for our students and teachers, where classes rotated around completing different experiments.

Interrelate has begun and will run in Weeks 2 - 4 for our Year 6 students. The focus this year is on personal development and body image.

Year 5 are now looking to the future and the process of leadership for 2020 is underway. Students have been asked to nominate themselves to be a candidate for a school leader by Week 3. Initial speeches will be delivered to Stage 3 in Week 5. With the final 10 boys and girls delivering their speeches to the school in Week 7. Good luck to all involved.

Classes have begun to discuss themes for our upcoming Year 6 farewell, it is always a fantastic night for all Stage 3 students. Please mark Thursday, 10 December 2020 in your calendars.

With all of the cancellations this year (mainly our camps), we have decided to run a Stage 3 excursion to Sydney in Week 8. It will involve going to Luna Park which correlates with our energy project.

Along with surf day, Year 6 transition to high school, sport gala days, Leader’s Camp, presentation days and party day, there is a lot to squeeze into this term.

It is always an exciting time for Stage 3, but it is extremely important that all students maintain and uphold our school values of respect, responsibility and excellence at all times to ensure an enjoyable and memorable last term of 2020 is had by all.

Stage 3 teachers thank you for your support.

Nulkaba News - 2020 Term 4 Week 2 Page 9 Friday, 23 October 2020

It’s Book Week 2020! This year’s theme has been “Curious Creatures, Wild Minds” and it has certainly been a ‘curious’ year.

Book Week is normally held in August but due to the COVID situation and restrictions, it was rescheduled to October. The Library has been decorated to highlight this year’s theme, and 3B and 4/5Z both have managed to create some artwork pieces for display in the Library as well. Mrs Morris has been sharing a range of the Book of the Year award books with classes and is running some competitions as well. The colouring competition closes on Monday, and winners will be announced in the next few days. A second competition running for the next few weeks, features an image representing a well-known story – and students have to work out just which story is shown. At the end of each week, a winner will be drawn, and the next image put on display.

Given the current environment, there are currently no plans to hold a Book Week Parade for 2020. So, we will have to keep out fingers crossed that we will be able to hold a parade in 2021.

“Hello Lighthouse” with Books to Life! In 2019, we were able to attend the Books to Life performance of the Book Week award-nominated book “The All New Orange 430”. This live performance was just outstanding and plans were made to bring this year’s performance to Nulkaba.

The performance for 2020 is based on the award-winning “Hello Lighthouse”. Unlike last year’s performance, this year’s has had to be adapted to suit the COVID environment, and is has been converted to an online experience – which will be just as engaging and enjoyable to watch thanks to the talents of lead performer, Tony Appleby.

Permission notes are on their way (if they have not already been sent out) and should be returned with the $5.00 payment by Friday, 6 November 2020. The Books to Life website https://bookstolife.com.au/ contains lots of information and links about the show and is well worth a look. This promises to be a fantastic performance and is one not to be missed.

Be Sure to Mark the Dates! The Book Fair will be Happening in Week 6! November 16 to 18 Of course the Fair has to run a bit differently this year due to COVID restrictions – but we are

working on a range of ways to ensure that students and parents have as much information as

possible about the Fair and the items available for purchase. Student wish lists will be very

important this year, and it is highly recommended that payments are made online rather than

by cash. More information will be given in the next newsletter, as well as via Seesaw messages

and notes home. Shopping at the Fair is of course a great way of getting in some Christmas

shopping and helps our school library earn new items for student use and enjoyment.

Overdue Library Loans and Term 4 Borrowing Currently, there are many overdue library items marked out to students. Many students were given letters in the last week of Term 3 giving details about overdue items. Thank you to those parents and students who have returned the items noted in those letters. However, many items remain unreturned. It would be appreciated if anyone who received a letter returns the noted items, or the letter, as soon as possible so that student records and be cleared and be brought up to date. With that in mind, as well as the fact that library borrowing for 2020 will cease for the year before the end of term, any student who has overdue items will not be allowed to borrow any further items until the overdue items are accounted for – this is to minimise the number of items that have to be returned. Please let Mrs Morris know of any concerns regarding library items.

Nulkaba News - 2020 Term 4 Week 2 Page 10 Friday, 23 October 2020

Toward the end of last term we held our Skip Off to raise money to support the upgrade of our Year 6 Area. The Skip Off

was a massive success with the school raising $8500. We as a school have to thank the wonderful sponsors for the day.

Sportspower Cessnock, Ingenia Holidays Hunter Valley and our school canteen. These are regular supports for school

events and it was amazing to be able to provide many prizes on the day for students across the activities.

This money was then used to purchase fencing and plants for the Year 6 Area that we were able to work on over the

holidays. Across two days Mr Wills our P&C president and a number of staff members and their families worked very hard

to start the process with the upgrade. The students have been so appreciative and proud of the area and we are

purchasing more plants, paint for the tables and looking for some umbrellas to complete the area. Thank you for your

contribution to the skip off and to Mr Wills and the staff for their contribution over the two days. It has been a great

improvement.
