AKMALRace analysis From humblebeginnings, Akmal hasblossomed into one of theleading lights of the stayers’ranks. He was a highlyprogressive three-year-oldstayer last year, when he wonseven races, graduating fromclass 4 handicaps to success inthe Group 3 Jockey Club Cup.

He had proved disappointingon his first two runs this year, but on reflection he had validexcuses both times. In theDubai Duty Free FinestSurprise Stakes, over aninadequate 1m4f, he mademost of the running but waseasily brushed aside byspeedier rivals, finishing tailedoff behind Harbinger; and inthe Sagaro Stakes, back overhis favoured 2m, he wasrestrained by his jockeyRichard Hills instead ofdominating the field, thestrategy that had seen himcollect most of his victories.

A return to making therunning under Hills workedthe oracle in the Blue SquareHenry II Stakes last Thursday.Despite having to be scrubbedalong three furlongs fromhome, the John Dunlop-trainedgelding showed plenty ofcourage to dig deep and repelthe challenge of runner-upSaptapadi, whose year-olderbrother Patkai had finishedsecond in the race last year.Remarkably, considering hewas being scrubbed alongbefore better-travelling rivals,Akmal won a shade cosily by alength and a half.

Dunlop said after the racethat the Gold Cup at RoyalAscot would be next on theagenda for Akmal.Pedigree Akmal was bred byhis owner Hamdan AlMaktoum’s Shadwell Estatesfrom an association with thefamily began in 1988 with the$1 million purchase of Akmal’sthird dam, the Riverman mareHistoire, at the KeenelandNovember breeding-stocksale. Histoire had beentrained in France by CriquetteHead-Maarek to win over1m21⁄2f, and in the year of thesale her second foal,Hispanolia, by Kris, had wontwo Listed races in France.

Histoire was sold carrying acover by Nureyev and the

CONTREDANSERace analysis From Class 4handicapper to Classic winnerin one step: that’s theunusually steep career ascentof Contredanse, who on May13 carried top weight to asix-length victory in a 0-85three-year-old fillies’ handicapat Salisbury and, just over afortnight later, edged out theRichard Hannon-trainedMiddle Club to win the Oaksd’Italia at the San Siro onSunday.

The Luca Cumani-trainedContredanse failed to win lastyear, but still compiled somedecent form: with just one run– an eighth on her debut in a7f Newbury maiden – underher belt, she tackled thelucrative Tattersalls TimeformFillies’ 800 and faredcreditably, finishing ten lengthsbehind winner Lillie Langtry ineighth. On her next, and final, start at two, she was atwo-length third to MusidoraStakes winner and currentOaks favourite Aviate in aKempton maiden.

From three starts this yearshe is unbeaten, starting off ina class 5 handicap at Windsor, winning by only a head but asjoint top-weight withsubsequent dual handicapwinner Right Rave, receiving8lb, more than four lengthsback in third.

The Oaks d’Italia was, in allprobability, not the strongestGroup 2 to be run this year– Middle Club’s Group 3 winlast year and Group 3 secondon her previous run before therace entitled her to befavourite, and the third,Isantha, had been beaten in anon-black type race atHanover on her latest run– but Contredanse is evidentlyan improving filly and it willbe interesting to see how shefares against the cream ofBritain and Ireland’sthree-year-old fillies this year.

Pedigree Few could haveimagined when DanehillDancer – a sharp two-year-oldand smart sprinter at three, from a fast family – retired tostud at a fee of just Ir4,000gns,that he would become a goodsource of Classic horses, notonly over 1m but also up to1m4f, and be in the premierleague of Europe’s stallions.

But after a strong start forDanehill Dancer’s early crops– which yielded QueenElizabeth II Stakes scorerWhere Or When and starAustralian sprinter Choisir– the stallion’s price graduallyascended, hitting doublefigures (€30,000) for the firsttime in 2003, more thandoubling to €75,000 by 2006and rising to six figures(€115,000) in 2007 and2008, in the afterglow ofSpeciosa’s 1,000 Guineas win, before joining the elite leagueof private-fee stallions in2009.

While Danehill Dancerproduces year after year aslew of sharp, high-classtwo-year-olds – he achieved anew high last year when siringthe first three home, led byAlfred Nobel, in the Group 1Phoenix Stakes – he is alsocapable of providing stars overfurther, as the ultra-toughAnna Pavlova (a LancashireOaks winner on soft ground),

Wajir (winner of the 1m7fGroup 3 Prix de Lutece) – andnow Contredanse prove.

The high esteem in whichDanehill Dancer is held – andalso how breeders view hisversatility – is shown in hiscovers last year. Among themare sprinters includingFrizzante, Guineas winnersVirginia Waters and Yesterday, and top-class middle-distancefillies All My Loving and RaveReviews.

Contredanse’s sisterCallwood Dancer won theGrade 2 Nassau Stakes over1m1f in Canada, andWalklikeanegyptian, herthree-parts sister by Danehill, was a 5f winner in Britain butwas smart at around 1m inAmerica.

Contredanse’s dam, Ahdaab, was of little account but hailsfrom a glittering family. Herdam, Dish Dash, won theRibblesdale Stakes and Maroof, her half-brother by Danzig, upstaged Barathea andBigstone to win the 1994Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at66-1, while half-sister Sabaah,by Nureyev, produced Irish2,000 Guineas and Irish Derbywinner Desert King.

Ahdaab was covered byDanehill Dancer every seasonbetween 2003 and 2009 andher last registered offspringwas a yearling filly bred byLynch Bages and Samac.

resultant foal, Oumaldaaya, went on to carry SheikhHamdan’s silks to victory inthe Premio Lydia Tesio and theLupe Stakes. It was Histoire’sthird foal for Shadwell whodid most to repay her purchaseprice, however: the result ofher visit in 1990 to Chief ’sCrown was Derby winnerErhaab.

Oumaldaaya’s stud recorddid not live up to her racingcareer and up until November2002 – when Shadwell culledher from its broodmare band, selling her to Horse France for$170,000 at the KeenelandNovember sale – her firstseven foals had yielded justone black-type performer, theDesmond Stakes winnerHaami, by Nashwan.

Oumaldaaya’s first threeoffspring after being broughtto Europe after her sale werebred by King Bloodstock andhave produced only onewinner, Brandane, herfive-year-old son by DanehillDancer who was twicesuccessful in class 6 handicaps. Her most recent two registeredfoals, a two-year-old filly byOratorio (sold to DavidRedvers for €16,000 at lastyear’s Goffs Orby sale) and ayearling filly by Holy RomanEmperor, were bred by LynchBages and Samac.

Oumaldaaya is gainingredemption through Ayun, her2000 daughter by Swain(a son of Nashwan, meaningAyun is closely related toHaami) who won three racesfor Dunlop. Ayun’s first foal,Feraa, by Sakhee, won a racein Greece and the tenaciousAkmal is her second, although her third, Albeed, athree-year-old filly by TigerHill, has failed to get to withinten lengths of the winner infour starts. Ayun also has atwo-year-old colt by RedRansom, named Elrasheed, ayearling colt by Nayef and afilly foal by Cape Cross.

Akmal is by Lanwades Studlinchpin Selkirk, one of ahandful of proven NorthernDancer-free stallions at stud inEurope. The son of Sharpen Uphas proved to be a mostversatile sire, with his Group 1winners scoring over distancesranging from 7f (Field Of Hopein the 1999 Prix de la Foret)to 1m6f (Kastoria, 2006 IrishSt Leger).

Mare transformed by move to UShelps keep her sire’s name in lights

Race analysis TuscanEvening has not looked backsince leaving Ireland forAmerica last year.

She departed Europe as amaiden from 11 starts at twoand three – even though shefinished placed five times(including seconds behindsubsequent Group 1 winnersListen and Myboycharlie attwo) and was runner-up, laterdemoted to fourth, behindHalfway To Heaven in the Irish1,000 Guineas.

Under the tutelage of JerryHollendorfer in California, shehas now won nine races– including five Grade 2s, andcoming over distances rangingfrom 61⁄2f to 1m2f – in thespace of under a year.

She entered Sunday’s GamelyHandicap on a four-racewinning streak, and extendedthe run to five with ahalf-length win – her first atGrade 1 level – over ForeverTogether, a four-time top-flightwinner on turf.

Hollendorfer said after therace that Tuscan Eveningwould be pointed at theBeverly D Stakes at Arlingtonon August 21 – which wouldbe the mare’s first race outsideCalifornia since her movestateside – with the Grade 3Beverly Hills Handicap atHollywood Park on June 26 asa shorter-term target.Pedigree Tuscan Eveningcapped another fantastic weekfor young Juddmonte sireOasis Dream.

On the same day that TuscanEvening won the GamelyHandicap, Oasis Dream siredthe winners of the Group 3John of Gaunt Stakes, MainAim, and Listed King Charles IIStakes, Field Of Dream, as wellas the runner-up in the ListedSandy Lane Stakes, Rainfall.Earlier in the week, OasisDream was represented by hisfirst Classic winner whenFrozen Power won theMehl-Mülhens-Rennen,Germany’s 2,000 Guineas.

The sire also had an excitingnew juvenile maiden winner,Swiss Dream, who is describedby her trainer David Elsworthas “class with a capital C” andis Royal Ascot-bound.

Tuscan Evening is OasisDream’s sixth Group 1 winner. The sire’s versatility isremarkable: his currentjuveniles are his fourth crop

– at least one Group 1 winneremerged from his first threeand the distances those winscame over ranges from 6f ongood ground (Arcano in thePrix Morny) to 1m2f on heavy(Querari in last month’s PremioPresidente Repubblicca). Andnot forgetting 1m2f Group 1winner Midday, who finishedsecond in the Oaks, and 1m4fGroup 2 winner Monitor

Closely, who finished third inthe St Leger.

Tuscan Evening hails from afine family for her breederAnthony Oppenheimer’sHascombe and Valiant Studs. Her dam, the Suave Dancermare The Faraway Tree, wastrained by Geoff Wragg forOppenheimer to finish placedin the Park Hill Stakes, and is ahalf-sister to Jersey Stakes and

Challenge Stakes heroine SallyRous, Prix d’Ispahan winnerSasuru and Listed winners LittleBean and Sossus Vlei – as wellas the dam of Poule d’Essai desPouliches winner Rose Gypsy.

The Faraway Tree has atwo-year-old colt by HurricaneRun, named Barbican, wasbarren to Shamardal in 2009,and has a colt foal by Lawmanon the ground.

QUICK QUESTIONSRichard Venn, UK andIreland representative forBBAG Sales in Germany

What are yourexpectations for the BBAGBreeze-Up on Friday? Thebreeze-up sales have generallyfared well this year and wewould be hopeful ofcontinuing in that vein, although, in the currentclimate, nothing can beguaranteed. We’re very hopefulthat vendors will get a fairprice for their stock and thatthere will also be value outthere for buyers.

Why buy a breeze-uphorse in Germany? I thinkthere’s great value out there. As the sale is laterin the seasonthan any of theother breeze-ups,there’s plenty ofpetrol left inthe tank of

these horses and they’re verymuch a long-term prospect. The catalogue is very strongagain this year.

Which Irish or UK clientsare you expecting tocome over? Unfortunately, the sale clashes with Epsom, but there will be a smallnumber of British and Irishvendors and buyers there. ConMarnane’s Bansha HouseStable has sent another nicedraft of horses.

How much has therecession affected theindustry in Germany? Theindustry has been hit veryhard by the recession. Thereare fewer people withracehorses and theracecourses have also haddifficulties. With that in mind, only the better-class mares arebeing bred, so the strength ofthe German breed remainsintact.

Student FocusFeaturing members ofthe Irish National Studbreeding course. Thisweek, Adam Rumsby

ADAM RUMSBY, from Scone in theHunter Valley in Australia, hasbeen involved in the racing andbreeding industry since completinga TAFE certificate course in EquineStudies back in 2006.

Hailing from the breedingepicentre of Australia, Rumsbyhas worked at two nearby studfarms but has concentrated mainlyon working in the racing yard oflocal trainer Rodney Northam.

“I started off there as a stablehand,” he said, “and I reallyenjoyed it. I would hope to set upas a trainer in a few years timeif I can.

“To become a good trainer, though, I think it’s important tohave a good grip on all aspects ofthe industry, and that is why Idecided to get some experienceat the Magic Million yearlingsales with Glastonbury Farm.

“After that I went to work forNathan Tinkler’s Patinack Farm, starting off doing broodmarework mainly. I also ended upworking in the foaling unit andI found that really interesting. Itwas great experience and I hopeto head back there once the courseis finished.

“Coming to the National Studhas obviously helped me to gain

more experience in this regard. Acouple of my friends back homehad completed the course and ithas been a good avenue for themto get a broader knowledge base.

“I was lucky enough to winthe Hunter Valley ThoroughbredBreeders’ Scholarship to comehere and I’m so grateful to themfor the opportunity. I have reallyenjoyed the rotation at the Kildareyard since I’ve been here as it’s amare and foal barn.

“The stallion rotation has alsobeen a great learning curve as

I’ve never worked in a coveringshed before.

“ I ’m look ing forward toreturning home after the courseand going back to work atPatinack. I’ll be assisting in allaspects of the running of the farmwhen I go back, from foaling tobroodmare work and helping outin the covering shed.

“ H o p e f u l l y, w i t h t h a texperience behind me, I might bein a position to take out my licenceand train a small stable of nicehorses by the time I’m 30.”

More Group 1 joy asMedici rocks Sha TinMR MEDICI’S victory in Sunday’sGroup 1 Standard CharteredChampions & Chater Cup at ShaTin marked a one-two for Irish-breds in the race, with SuperPistachio taking second, a lengthand a quarter behind the winner.

Mr Medici was bred at KildaraghStud just outside Kildangan inCounty Kildare.

“We bought Mr Medici’s dam,Way For Life, with her Night Shiftfilly foal at foot in a private deal,”said stud owner Peter Kavanagh.“She was visiting Spectrum atthe time and the following season we decided to send her toMedicean, as we fancied theMr Prospector-cross [Mediceani s by Mr Prospec tor ’ s sonMachiavellian] and the fact thathe’s inbred to Northern Dancer.

“Those first three foals haveall been stakes performers andnow, of course, Mr Medici is aGroup 1 winner”.

Way For Life subsequentlyvisited Azamour and producedLife And Soul, a useful three yearold currently in training withAmanda Perrett.

“That turned out to be her lastfoal as she died from complications

foaling,” Kavanagh said. “It wasa severe blow, what with herbeing a black-type mare andhaving produced three black-typeperformers. She had the makingsof a fine foundation mare.”

Kavanagh has operated fromKildaragh Stud since 1986. Having at first concentrated onpinhooking, the primary concernnow is to develop his broodmareband.

“We continue to buy a selectnumber of weanlings each yearwith the plan of selling them atthe premier sales at Arqana, Goffsand Tattersalls, but our mainfocus is to continually upgrade ourown mares on the farm and to

breed good sound race horses,”he said.

Mr Medici’s Group 1 victoryfollows that of Kildaragh graduateJukebox Jury’s success in thePreis Von Europa at Cologne lastSeptember. He was consigned asa yearling by the Kildare stud.Purchased at Arqana by his trainerMark Johnston, he is set toline-up in the Investec CoronationCup at Epsom on Friday.

Jukebox Jury is just one of a hostof top-class horses who have beensold by Kildaragh Stud in France.Originally, Kavanagh sold yearlingswith Moyglare Stud at Deauville, and realising the importance ofthe European market, spent threeyears in Normandy, mainly atHaras du Mézeray.

This year will be no differentas Kildaragh Stud as it will senda number of yearlings to France.

“We have a nice bunch of horses this year and they’ll besplit between the three big salesin Europe. The recent results inthe Classics show that top-qualityhorses can be bought at commercialprices and that gives greatencouragement to prospectivepurchasers and investors.”

Peter Kavanagh: “A nicebunch of horses this year”
