    GRA DE LEVEL NEWS

    Anthony Middle Schoolanthony.mpls.k12.mn.us612.668.3240

6TH GRADE - SCIENCE NEWS - WE'RE ON THE MOVE!

7TH GRADE - LEARNING ABOUT AESTHETICS

Our young scientists will be wrapping up the first half of our unit "We're on the Move" with an assessment on energy after winter break. We explored the two types of energy - potential and kinetic - and learned about all of the different forms of energy. In lab we built batteries and experimented with energy

transformations using a plasma ball, mousetrap car, radiometer, and a Van der Graaf generator (just to

name a few!). In the second half of the unit we will be exploring the topic of force and motion, and learning all about the relationships between an object 's motion

and the forces acting on it.

8TH GRADE - MODEL UN = A SUCCESS!On Friday, December 14th, Anthony 8th graders participated in a Model United Nations Conference. Students prepared for the role-play by studying the history, function, and structure of the United Nations, researching the global issue of refugees, and learning about the country they would be representing at the conference. Students also learned United Nations procedures, presentation skills, and negotiation skills.

The morning was memorable in many ways. There were 20 amazing Southwest students who came back to Anthony and helped us run the event. There were 45 dedicated parents who pitched in and worked as pages in the committee rooms.

Retired teachers Ms. Wasmoen and Ms. Taft came back to lend a hand. The teachers and staff at Anthony put in extra time and effort to make the event a success. Finally, and most importantly, the 8th graders were amazing. Their team work, negotiating skills, knowledge of refugees, and professional demeanor, made this a Model UN to remember. Thank you to all!

"Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion? ? Martha Graham.

Before the winter break Seventh graders were learning about modern dance history. As students learned that modern dance technique came out of a desire to rebel or reject ballet norms, seventh graders were able to analyze, compare, and reflect on ballet aesthetics versus modern aesthetics. Additionally, students were able to relate to

the Martha Graham?s quote about dance by drawing on other connections, such as sports and other interests both in and outside of school.

Coming back from the break, seventh graders will be working in their groups to create and choreograph a dance that manipulates the dance elements. Student have come to understand that all forms of dance and movement includes these basic elements ? the body, actions, space, time, and energy. This is

project is a way for students to apply their knowledge of what they have learned in the dance rotation, to be creative and collaborative with their classmates, and to take risk, and most of all, to have FUN!

For the past few weeks your Anthony Student Council has partnered with Reading Partners to give back to our community. Reading Partners is a small non profit organization, that works with schools in our Anthony community. They go around to elementary schools to give one-on-one tutoring sessions with students, to improve their reading skills. At the end of every session each kid gets to choose a book to bring home, to keep up on their reading skills. Reading Partners and Anthony are partnering up to do a book drive.

Student Council members are making book boxes where you can drop off any new or gently used books. The boxes will be by each grade dean?s office and by the student council room in the basement. And suggested book lists will be posted as well. Remember any old - gently used (or new) books you have laying around your house, you bring to donate.

Math is all around us. Many times we talk about reading with our children or having them spend time reading, but how often do we talk about math with them? Talking about math with our children engages them and illustrates ways that we encounter math in our lives daily. With a long break just ahead, here are some ways to engage your student(s) in math discussions:

    - Go grocery shopping together and ask them to find the unit rate for an item.

    - Ask them which set of items will give the better deal? (a 6-pack of soda or a 12-pack of soda?)

    - Look at post-holiday ads where items are discounted and ask you child to do mental math to find the amount of money saved.

    - Ask them "What do you notice? What do you wonder?" about images, things you see in nature.

    - The next time you go out to dinner, have each person guess the total bill. (Estimation!!!) My family uses "The Price Is Right" rules: whoever is closest without going over wins.

Let us know how you are talking with your kids about math.

Email me bits of your conversations, things that you notice/wonder, and ideas that came up: [email protected]
