And good music and fine wine might have more in common than it seems. According to songwriter and producer Frank Rogers (Brad Paisley, Darius Rucker, Josh Turner), a birthday celebration for his wife in the Napa Valley was an eye-opening experience. “During the trip we got to be friends with several vineyard owners and managers,” he says. “And I was struck by the similarities in the businesses we’re in. “Just watching the process, you notice on the music side that if you don’t have a song, you don’t have anything. And if a winemaker doesn’t have a good grape, they don’t have anything.” Rogers and his wife Jessica began making repeated trips to the area, and saw some interesting links. “Over time I’d find wines I liked that didn’t seem to be connected, only to discover they had the same winemaker,” Rogers says. “It reminded me of how writers and producers can work behind the scenes and the general public may not really see all that goes on.” The couple built a relationship with Debi Cali of Baldacci Family Vineyards, and she made trips to Nashville to attend Charts: The Best Of Times... ..And it was the worst of times. With apologies to Charles Dickens, this was a musically great week for Country radio, with new singles (this week’s adds in parentheses) from five superstars Tim McGraw (53), Brad Paisley (46), Toby Keith (42), Sugarland (37) and Keith Urban (27). Adding to the excitement is that the singles from McGraw, Paisley and Keith are all new projects. I can’t recall the last time that many major acts all released new music the same week. It was a great week if you worked at those acts’ labels, as well. Those kind of boxcar add weeks don’t come along very often. And, for Paisley and Urban, the add avalanche began a week before their official add date of July 13. The downside? Well … perfect musical storms can make things dicey for new artists. Recently- charted singles can appear to stall – or worse – as songs can fall out of the Top 50 when multiple superstars debut in the 40s. That can happen despite showing increased airplay over the past seven days. And, of course, it’s tough to gather any new airplay with superstars sucking all available airplay oxygen from the room. songwriter nights. “She was equally fascinated,” Rogers says. Walking through the caves at the Baldacci facility, Rogers remarked it seemed a perfect place to stage a writer’s night. “At first it was just about sharing the passion behind it, but we thought if we’re going to throw a party it might as well be for a good reason.” Rogers wanted to support music education in public schools; Cali chose literacy, and the NOTES organization was created to distribute funds accordingly. “The long term goal is to have a Napa in Nashville event, too,” Rogers says. “And then maybe spread out to various sites throughout the country.” ASCAP and SunTrust are sponsoring the Aug. 1 event in California, and songwriters Rivers Rutherford, Jim “Moose” Brown, Jon Randall, Hillary Lindsey, Don Sampson and David Lee Murphy will perform. Radio: Listeners Pay Attention Some good news for radio’s core business, as a new Harris Interactive poll shows that only 9% of consumers say they tend to ignore or disregard radio advertising the most. Thirteen percent said the same of television ads, while 17% overlook Internet search engine ads the most, and a huge 46% said they ignore Internet banner ads more than they disregard other media.

My Tunes: Music ThaT shaped My Life Brady Seals discusses his most important songs, artists or concerts: 1. Steve Earle, Guitar Town: One of the best country albums of all time. The lyrics and signature guitar riffs are classic. Steve’s Texas slang while singing made a huge impression on me as a vocalist. I still try to sing like him from time to time.2. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Gold & Platinum: I’m not sure it’s their best album but I know that it influenced me more than any other. I used to invite kids around the neighborhood and put on concerts. Of course

they weren’t really concerts, we just played and sang along with the record.3. The Band, The Last Waltz: I really got into The Band after watching Scorsese’s concert film “The Last Waltz.” They were a true, honest-to-goodness band. I love how The Band backed other artists during this film. It showed a humility in their artistry that you don’t see much these days.4. The Eagles, Hotel California: The quintessential American rock band. I remember as a boy hearing “Hotel California” and the lyrics being a little scary. Now the only thing that scares me about The Eagles is how tight their live harmonies are. 5. Elvis’ Golden Records: I really wanted to grow up and be like Elvis. The voice, the charisma, and the production of those old records are just amazing. I used to visit rest homes with my mother when I was really young and dress up like Elvis and pantomime to his songs. In fact, after a performance one day we turned on the TV in the lobby of the nursing home and found out Elvis had died. I was heart broken.• A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: David Bowie, Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars. One of these days I’m going to check it out. I’ve always admired “Major Tom” but never dug any deeper.• An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Nirvana, Kurt Cobain. I just wasn’t a fan of his voice. I remember some of the MTV Unplugged performances where it was just him, a guitar and his songs and I just wasn’t that impressed. It was obvious that he was an honest and passionate artist and for that I have the utmost respect.• An album you played or listened to incessantly: Free, Molten Gold. There are folks out there that probably don’t even know that this band even existed. It was Paul Rogers’ band before Bad Company, somewhere around 1963. They were a four-piece rock & roll band that you have to check out!• One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Fleet Foxes’ “White Winter Hymnal.” This song is definitely not for everyone. The only thing that comes to mind for this song is that is very original. The melodic structure and harmonies are spot on.

Chart Chat Congrats to Dierks Bentley, Steve Hodges, Shane Allen and the entire Capital crew on scoring this week’s No. 1 song with Bentley’s “Sideways.” The track is the second cut from his current album to top the chart (“Feel That Fire”), and the sixth No. 1 of Bentley’s career (“Every Mile A Memory,” “Settle For A Slowdown,” “Come A Little Closer” and “What Was I Thinkin’”). And kudos to Universal South’s Teddi Bonadies-led team, whose top 10 with Randy Houser’s “Boots On” makes him the first new male artist to reach the milestone this year, following label mates Eli Young Band, who were the first new artist to hit top 10 with “Always The Love Songs.” Breaking two artists into the top 10 in a year is certainly cause for celebration. And in the Chart Chat history department, Tuesday (7/7) marks the 20-year anniversary of the ascension of “Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old) to its peak at No. 10. By November of 1989, “If Tomorrow Never Comes” would enjoy two weeks at No. 1 and country music would be irrevocably changed ... as would the life of the artist performing those songs, Garth Brooks.

Adrian Monk: WXFL/Florence-Muscle Shoals, AL GSM Donald “Rocky” Reich (l) retired last week after more than 50 years in radio. During the festivities, company owner Jerry Phillips (r) and longtime friend Charlie Monk paid their respects.

Charts (continued from page 1) collected an aggregate 348 adds this week from our 123 reporters. The aforementioned five superstars garnered 205 of those adds, leaving just 143 slots for 50 other artists who got at least one add this week. The chart jolt can even be felt by big country acts with recently-released singles. Fact is, when five superstars release new singles, there’s just not much left to go around. Further muddying this week’s chart waters is Fourth of July weekend airplay. Lengthy countdowns of the top few hundred songs impact current airplay, as does a healthy dose of spins from patriotic Gold. In fact, five songs – Martina McBride’s “Independence Day” (605 plays), Aaron Tippin’s “Where the Stars and Stripes and Eagles Fly” (428), Toby Keith’s “American Solider” (390), Brooks & Dunn’s “Only In America” (369) and Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless The USA” (352) – got enough play to chart in the Top 50. As the saying goes, there are lies, damned lies and statistics. Those are just a few things you might want to keep in mind as you analyze the Mediabase airplay information in both the main chart and the Activator chart in this week’s Country Aircheck on your way to making music decisions.
