From the director’s desk: A brief article in the Jamestown Sun announced the Arts Center has received a $190,220 Bush Foundation Community Innovation Grant. The article stated that the funds will be used to develop the space downtown; but didn’t say why this space is vitally important. The core of our city is the first impression the community makes and needs to be one of dynamic energy. As all of us drive through downtown, we want to see boards removed from windows and new “life” emerge.

“Community Innovation Grant recipients are tackling community problems in a way we believe most likely to result in real breakthrough solutions. They are engaging the community, collaborating with other organizations, and making the most of existing assets; in short, all of the things it takes to create a true community innovation,” said Elli Haerter, Bush Foundation ND and SD activities manager.

In multiple community meetings, The Arts Center began asking the question, “What makes a healthy, sustainable and livable community; and how can the Arts play a pivotal role in that development?” The Help Wanted signs all over Jamestown ask, “How can we attract new residents?” A University of Nebraska study found “…new residents reported that their final decision was based more on what they saw as desirable attributes of the community than on the specifics of employment and emphasized the importance of a shared community vision for the future.”

Through arts and heritage festivals, performances, casual gatherings, special events and outdoor movies, the centrally-located green space downtown that the Arts Center is creating, will have multiple uses attracting families, introducing new residents, and greatly enriching quality of life. Not only will the artistic elements of this space reflect our shared heritage, but also reflect a forward-thinking vision for downtown development.

Miranda LethermanEducation Coordinator

Help us welcome the newest member of The Arts Center team: Miranda Letherman, our new Education Coordinator. Miranda is excited about joining us and looks forward to collaborating with students, teachers, and artists to create cultural and artistic experiences through art classes and workshops. She has an A.A.S. in Graphic Design and a B.A. in Elementary Education, both of which will be an asset to the role. Art has always been part of Miranda’s life and she is eager to be immersed in the artistic environment at the Arts Center. She and her family live in the James River Valley near Adrian where they enjoy a large garden, horses, and all aspects of a country life.

presenCes: mixed media drawings by loral iverson Hannaher

October 23 – November 29, 2014

This exhibit will feature a gallery of “presence” portraits reflecting the artist’s ongoing exploration and meditation on objects from nature–both alive and dead. Loral has always been drawn to objects from nature whose forms have provided her a rich source of content. Whether the subject is a cabbage, leaf, skeleton or squash—each entity exhibits and contains human qualities.

In addition to portraits of plant forms, visitors to the exhibit will encounter a group of skeleton portraits. These drawings began as classroom assignment for Hannaher’s MSUM art students. In the process of lighting, posing and finding an engaging perspective a wonderful range of expressive possibilities unfolded. Through choices in color, mark making and placement on the page strong personalities emerged. A sensitive exploration of the intricacies of gesture included choices of what to include and what not to include in the drawing.

Appropriate to the season, gallery goers will encounter these “presences” and join the artist’s “Dia de Muertos” picnic. Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday observed throughout Mexico and around the world. Friends and family often picnic in graveyards to remember family and friends who have died.

Hannaher grew up in Moorhead, Minn. and lives in Fargo, N.D. She spent her formative years painting, drawing, and making assemblage sculpture at Minnesota State University Moorhead, where she earned a bachelor of arts degree. In 1981, Hannaher graduated with an M.F.A. in painting from the noted Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. For more than 20 years, she has taught drawing at Minnesota State University Moorhead. Hannaher exhibits broadly in the region including the Minnesota Museum of Art, MCAD Gallery, Plains Art Museum, Cranbrook Art Museum, North Dakota State University Gallery, and the Winnipeg Art Gallery.

Jfaa 50th annual art sHow Open to the public: September 13 - October 18, 2014

This year is a great milestone for the Annual. It’s particularly special as it’s the JFAA Annual’s 50th year. It is a grand feat for a small town art show to survive 50 years. While participation has ebbed and flowed over the years, it continues to be a favorite exhibition for the Jamestown community. To commemorate this milestone we have reached out to artists help us celebrate. We’re hoping they participate in the exhibit but we have also asked them to create a small commemorative artwork that will be part of a special “ticketed” preview.

The way it will work…Everyone who has a ticket will have a chance to receive an artwork (There will be a limited number of mini-artworks available–we won’t know how many until the last minute.) All incoming, donated artwork will be numbered. Corresponding numbers will be put in a bin. Ticket stubs will also be placed in a bin and we will randomly draw one from each thus matching ticket holder to artwork.

Another change this year is that all artwork in the exhibit is for sale. The Annual is a wonderful opportunity to purchase original artwork and support regional artists.

If you are an artist or creative person and would like donate a small piece to the celebration, you can still participate. The artwork needs to be delivered to the Arts Center by September 10th. Exhibiting Artists (and any who donate commemorative works) are our special guests and welcome to come to the opening preview free of charge but must buy a ticket if they wish to be part of the drawing for artwork.

There was one year that the show did not occur (while under renovation), but it has been 50 years since it was first held.

speCial exHiBit preview Celebrating 50!Join us for an evening to celebrate our 50th! Meet the Artists, Enjoy the Refreshments, Get first pick of the art, and maybe even win one of the specially created commemorative pieces.
