The past twelve months have been busy for the Mint, from the celebrations for the golden anniversary of Australian decimal currency to the excitement of the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, it has been a great year. The pictures captured in the opening cover of this issue are just a snapshot of some of the highlights from 2016.
This December we are proud to bring you the Stuart Devlin exhibition The Designer

THE VOICE OF CRICKET 1930 – 2015
R I C H I E B E N A U D
Debuting for Australia in 1952 Richard “Richie” Benaud OBE was one of cricket’s great all-rounders. Consistently effective leg spin bowling and explosive batting earned Benaud the Australian team captaincy from 1958. Retiring in 1964, Benaud had already taken steps to stay close to the game he loved, pursuing journalism and publishing his first book. For almost five decades after retiring Benaud continued bringing the game to life with live commentary.
This coin is a tribute to the voice of cricket, who was a beacon of integrity against the ups and downs of the game, his legacy sure to endure for many centuries more.

The first effigy of Her Majesty to appear on Australian coins was produced by Mary Gillick, her calm portrayal of Her Majesty in contrast to the prior styles of effigy in use won her support at the Mint. Since then four more effigies have featured on Australian circulating coinage.
The annual year sets are indispensable in every collection and the 2017 year set is no exception. Featuring beautiful packaging that showcases reproductions of the effigies featured on Australian decimal currency, the 2017 year set is not to be missed.

The role of Product Development at the Mint is a challenging and varied one. Adonis who has been working as part of the Product Development team for ten years loves that every day is different.
Product Development is responsible for “creating all of the commemorative and numismatic products” at the Mint. As well as this the Product Development team “think of the theme, the product format, the way [the product] will look and feel and ensure that the original vision [of a product] is what is executed at the end of the day”. Adonis, pictured below with team member Matthew Frawley, can’t imagine working in any other department at the Mint and is proud of the work that she and her team produce.
For Adonis one of the projects that she felt really resonated with her was the 50 Years of Play School – Three Coin Set because as a mother she could visualise herself purchasing this product for her children as she was developing it.
Adonis and the Product Development team have some exciting products in store for 2017 and they can’t wait to share them with you!
FROM THE VAULTT H E R O Y A L L A D I E S
Designed by Stuart Devlin, The Royal Ladies collection was produced in 1992 to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Royalties from the sales of the coins sets went towards supporting the Commonwealth Games Federation.
The Royal Ladies represented in the coin set include Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Her Royal Highness the Queen Mother, Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales, Her Royal Highness the Princess Margaret, and Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal.
Devlin had two sittings with each lady, taking photographs and sketches which assisted him in creating the final drawings. After
the drawings were approved, plaster models were sculpted which were four or five times the size of the end product. Devlin approached the coining process with a meticulous attention to detail. Devlin described The Royal Ladies as “the most exciting coin design commission this century”.
To see The Royal Ladies collection and other rarities from Devlin’s career don’t miss the Mint’s exhibition The Designer with the Midas Touch. Honouring five decades of Devlin’s masterly work, this exhibition will be a must see.
