CEO LETTER: SEASON’S GREETINGS It can be easy to get caught up in the “stress of the

holidays.” But just like in the fast pace work environ-

ments we’re performing in now, I think the majority of

the stress is manageable if we prioritize, simplify, and

adjust our thinking by asking ourselves the right ques-

tions. The holidays are one of the best times of year to

take a moment to reflect and be grateful for what we

have been given. These are just a few things that I am

grateful for this year in regards to Sunland:

Growing with Loyal Customers:

We are fortunate that we were given the opportunities to help many new

and existing customers do what they do better this year. From new e-

commerce accounts to launching a 700,000+ sq. ft. operation in Georgia for

one of our most loyal customers - it has been a year of exciting growth.

New Team Members:

To support this exciting growth and to take us to the next level in our Desti-

nation 2018 Journey (and beyond), we have added some incredibly valua-

ble talent to the Sunland team. The newest member is an incredible leader

with very impressive operations experience, Hari Sivaprakasam. Hari has

come on board as Sunland’s first Chief Operating Officer. We look forward

to everyone meeting and working with Hari as he will certainly help strength-

en our organization’s ability to provide more value to our customers.

Evolution of our Lean Journey:

Our sites have been making great improvements and I am very proud of

everyone for continuing to strive for excellence. This year we discovered an

exciting program that will help accelerate our lean journey by empowering

our associates on the floor to eliminate waste and make changes that will

enhance their performance.

SunRaisers:

This year we established a community outreach program

called SunRaisers to help better our community by providing

opportunities for our associates engage in public service

projects. The first project our committee led has been a

huge success as we were able to support the Salvation

Army’s Angel Tree program by fulfilling 29 children’s Christ-

mas wishes. While we can only imagine the joy the children

will feel when they receive their gifts, we know the joy we

feel from being able to help.

Celebrating Success Together:

We were fortunate this year in being able to throw a big Holi-

day Party for our associates to celebrate our successes and

award those who have gone above and beyond. It’s always

so much fun to get everyone together for a special evening,

and it was truly priceless seeing both Gloria’s reaction to be-

ing named our 2016 Annual ICARE Award Winner and

Melvin’s smooth moves on the dance floor.

Thank you to our customers for your loyalty, our vendors for

your support, and especially our Sunland Team members for

your continued hard work and dedication to continuously im-

proving. I look forward to what 2017 has in store for us.

Wishing you comfort & joy,

Arch

CHANGE YOUR QUESTIONS, CHANGE YOUR LIFE

ELIJAH RAY, CHIEF CUSTOMER OFFICER

Earlier this year I had the opportunity to learn from one of the most powerful busi-

ness books I have read, Change Your Questions, Change Your Life by Marilee

Adams. The book emphasizes the power of being self-aware and asking construc-

tive questions that can positively impact our reactions to any situation. It introduc-

es the “Choice Map” - a tool designed to help us recognize when we are in a

“Learner Mindset” vs. a “Judger Mindset” and how to switch mindsets by asking

ourselves questions like “How else can I think about this?” Whether you’re having

trouble working effectively with a colleague, finding a customer particularly challenging to satisfy, or even

struggling in a relationship with a family member, this tool can help you be more solutions focused. Our

behavior follows the questions we ask ourselves and asking the right questions can lead you to better re-

sults in your career and in your personal life.

QUALITY MOMENT

Examples of Judger Questions: Examples of Learner Questions:

What’s wrong with me?

What’s wrong with them?

Whose fault is it?

What do I want? What are my goals?

What can I learn?

What are the facts? What am I assuming?

What’s possible?

Results of Judger Questions: Results of Learner Questions:

Pessimism, negativity, and stress

Judgmental, reactive, critical, and inflexible mindset

Relating to others in a win-lose or defensive / aggres-sive way

Optimism, hope, and possibilities

Thoughtful, curious, creative, and flexible mindset

Relating to others in a win-win, connected, and collabo-rative way

OPERATIONS FOCUS

This year we sent two groups from our leader-

ship and operations teams to visit Cambridge

Engineering in St. Louis, MI to see how they

were making lean and waste elimination a part of their culture.

Everyone who visited was amazed by how engaged all of their

employees were with continuous improvement and how pas-

sionate they were about eliminating waste.

Sunland has begun enhancing our lean journey with some of the

key practices we've learned from our visit and Paul Akers' book,

2 Second Lean. In fact, we’ve already begun making 2 Second

Lean improvement videos and will be expanding this practice

throughout our entire organization.

Are you familiar with these chemical hazard labels?

10 YEARS

OF PERFECT SAFETY

Congratulations to our

Anderson Road Team!

Before you can eliminate waste, you have to identify it. Take

a look around and approach it like a giant scavenger hunt!

Look around you and identify one example of the 8

wastes in your life:

1. Over Production:

2. Over Processing:

3. Excess Inventory:

4. Defects:

5. Transportation:

6. Wasted Motion:

7. Waiting Time:

8. Unused Employee Genius:

Sunland believes that the quality of our processes and the strength of

our company are dependent on our ability to develop the talent and

leadership skills of our associates. The ICARE Program is designed to

encourage and reward performance excellence.

PEOPLE

4nd Quarter Winner:

Shymaine Williams

Piggly Wiggly Road Site | North Charleston, SC

It is with great pleasure that

we announce the winner of the

ICARE award for our fourth

quarter to Shymaine Williams,

Team Lead, from our North

Charleston site. Shy has

helped lead several recent im-

provements in the operation

that have increase efficiency

and productivity for multiple customer accounts.

The North Charleston facility just completed an A3

which resulted in a complete re-layout of the entire

3rd building. It also involved some process chang-

es that helped in picking and shipping of paper or-

ders. The estimated savings with all changes to be

implemented is in excess of $200K. Shy was the

lead on this project to identify proper space for

each account, positioning of the account for proper

handling, and getting the team to make the chang-

es. He has now started another A3, getting a cou-

ple of associates involved on improving a receiving

process. Shy is driving the lean culture at our N.

Charleston site and continues to show extra effort

to improve himself, the team, and the equipment –

he helps serve in a maintenance capacity for the

site as well.

Congratulations to our win-

ner of the ICARE award for

2016/17 first quarter, Molly

Stech. Molly is a Customer

Service Representative at

the Blackhawk Facility and

has been with Sunland for

almost nine years. She is

always willing to stay late,

often spending hours on the phone with the help

desk, to ensure that all customer orders go out

on time and with the correct paperwork. Certifi-

cates of Analysis, commercial invoices, SDS,

hazard declarations, and even the occasional

“Kosher certificate” make chemical operations

that much more complex than your standard

commodity distribution. Molly successfully tack-

les these challenges everyday with a great atti-

tude. Most recently, the customer that Molly sup-

ports provided our management team with a

recognition email expressing their gratitude to the

Sunland team, specifically Molly, indicating how

she bends over backwards to help in a time of

need
