Kia Ora and Welcome to TAN Congratulations to our rowers who raced gallantly against the best school rowers in New Zealand this week. The best placed of our crews were Taane Whetu and Nick Preston-Marshall, who finished 13

th in the time trial repechage for the Under 16 boys

double scull; followed by Niamh Summers and Brooke Rabbidge who were 14

th fastest in the Under 15 Girls double scull

repechage. For all of the squad it was their first season of competitive rowing, and I am sure they will have benefitted from the experience. It was great to see them looking good out on the water; bring on next season!

At the end of last week Mr Grant presented a seminar at a Mahara/My Portfolio conference in Wellington. My Portfolio is an online digital student and teacher collaboration tool that assists pupils to learn by using the cloud to store teaching resources and students’ work. Teachers and students can then comment on and discuss each other’s work. It is a good exam-ple of new kinds of collaborative learning that the internet ena-bles, and a method we are interested in developing further as we find better ways to help students learn.

On Tuesday we had the Defence Force bus visit, which gave students the opportunity to hear and ask questions about careers in the Forces. Also visiting this week was a Liaison Officer from Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology, who discussed training opportunities with students.

Today I was privileged to join Rooms 4 and 5 students, along with 12 parent supporters, as they rode their bikes on the A2O trail along the shores of Lake Pukaki and back to Twizel. It is good to see children getting out and enjoying the special qualities of the great outdoors we have around us.

Reports: Progress Reports for Year 1-10 students are being written this week for sending home next week. These will give a summary indication of how your child has progressed in learning this term. The National Education Guidelines require us to give parents and caregivers of children who have completed their first, second or third year of schooling an Anniversary Report. We will issue these as closely as possible to each child’s anniversary. These reports will show the children’s progress and achieve-ment in relation to the National Standards in Reading, Writing and Mathematics, and on the rest of the curriculum. It will also involve parents in Three Way Conferences. If your child’s anni-versary of starting school is in this part of this term you will receive an Anniversary Report and take part in a Conference with your child’s teacher, as this marks the end of a learning year for younger children. At the end of Term 2 teachers will hold Three Way Conferences with all students (other than anni-versary students) and their parents to ensure relevant learning goals are set for the second semester. We appreciate that this process may cause some confusion for parents of Year 1-3 students, however along with all other schools we need to comply with Ministry of Education directives. Year 11-13 students will receive a report from their academic mentors next week after discussion between the mentors, the students, other teachers and the student. Parents are of course welcome to make an appointment to discuss their child’s progress at any time!

Coming Events: Good luck to those swimmers going to Otago Primary Schools Swimming Champs on Saturday - Jack Andrew, Nikau Whetu, Maddison Skinner, Kaya Skinner, and Holly Skinner.
