It’s with much excitement that I welcome you back to a new school year at Warialda Public School. I trust that you are all refreshed, recharged and ready for what will be a memorable and exciting 2020.

Again in 2020, we have 9 classes at WPS and expect to have 207 students enrolled. Whilst our teaching team remains stable across the school, we do extend a most sincere welcome to Mrs Rebecca Reardon who will be teaching with us on Tuesday’s.

Last Thursday, we welcomed 31 extremely excited kindergarten children. These very brave boys and girls started their school life with such maturity and calmness. Upon visiting their classrooms, they were immediately immersed in meaningful activities, demonstrating a love of learning. We look forward to watching them progress this Term.

On Friday, we hosted our annual Swimming Carnival. Fortunately, we managed to run the event without too much rain and can now look forward to the Inverell Zone Carnival to be held on the 21st of February. A sincere thanks is extended to each of the parents who volunteered their time to assist throughout the day. Congratulations to: Junior Champions: Kingston Hall & Whitney-Eve ShermanJunior Runner-Up: Archie van Velthuizen & Izzy Matthews11 Years Champions: Max Barwick & Pyper Dawson11 Years Runner-Up: Roley van Velthuizen & Darcy Mitchell (Tie) & Maggie ReardonSenior Champion: Os van Velthuizen & Trinity TurnerSenior Runner-Up: Sam Hall & Mia Ireland

The 2020 Student Leadership Team of Captains – Mia Ireland and Os van Velthuizen; Vice Captains – Ellie Michel & Samuel Hall; and PBL Prefects – Pyper Dawson and William Whalan have started the year exceptionally well leading by example. We look forward to watching these students develop their leadership skills as the year progresses.

This Thursday evening we will host our annual Meet the Teacher evening. This event commences at 6pm and takes place initially in the school library before parents move to their child’s classroom to chat with their teacher. The evidence tells us that when strong relationships are forged between home and school, it leads to positive outcomes for students. I’d strongly encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher and to start building that all-important relationship.

Again in 2020, we will be advocating for our school to reach the elusive target of 92% attendance. For the past few years, we have gone so close but fallen just short landing at around 91%. Interestingly, the data shows that we had 136 students attend at greater than 92%. The next group consisted of 51 students who had a rate of 91% to 80%. As part of our commitment to achieving targets, we will be trying some new strategies in relation to achieving improved attendance. However, the onus really remains with parents to make sure that students are at school each day unless they are unwell. We really appreciate your support.

Finally, we will continue to update parents via our school website, Facebook and newsletter but should you ever fi nd that you need more information, please simply pick up the phone or pop into our offi ce to fi nd the answers that you might need.

Have a great week and hopefully some beautiful rain!

Dan van Velthuizen - Principal
