WHATS ON

The biggest social media project Ely has ever seen and likely to see is still growing stronger day by day and now we have taken the decision to become completely environmentally friendly.

Just take a look at the Facebook stats from the last 7 day opposite.

As you can see this week alone we have nearly 100 new followers and we have reached in excess of 80,000 people with nearly 15,000 engaging with what we do.

But the vast numbers do not stop there!!

We have a website too. We regularly have 2000 visitors per day and now try to post about 6-8 stories a day.

The events section is ever growing, we have so far listed over 3,000 events and publicise them through our Facebook Group which itself has a further 3000 members.

And now our vacancy section, well that grew in days to 2000 followers, all ‘looking for’ or ‘listing’ work.

The numbers astound us every day. Stories we write get numbers we just cannot believe sometimes but we don’t make them up out of thin air. These are all recorded by Facebook and our WordPress partners. We could say we get 10,000 copies printed but do you know how many read it? At Spotted in Ely we only use channels that allow us to monitor real numbers.

YOU CAN USE THESE TO YOUR ADVANTAGE.Businesses need to promote and we have just the tool for you to do it and we’ve dropped the prices right down to make them affordable.

Running Spotted in Ely is a full time job for 1 and part time for another and till now we have done this voluntarily and have loved doing it but that doesn’t help with the bills. The site itself costs us hundreds of pounds a month to run just in the software and hardware we use and the travelling around.

So here’s a deal for your business I think you are going to want to get involved with. We have 3 levels of sponsorship, you decide which is best for you:

Sponsorship Deal 1: £35 for one week. You get a logo on nearly every page of the website which can be clicked through to any website or social media site of your

choice plus you get one story onto the Spotted in Ely Facebook timeline during that week and when available, a free quarter page advert into our new upcoming weekly E-Magazine. We do not carry over missed story timelines so be sure to use within the week you pay for.

Sponsorship Deal 2: £25 per week (minimum 4 weeks). All of the same as deal 1 except half page adverts in the E-magazine but with a minimum period of 4 weeks.

Sponsorship Deal 3: £20 per week (minimum 12 weeks). All of the same as deal 1 except half page adverts in the E-Magazine but with a minimum period of 12 weeks. £25 per week if you want full page.

Your site sponsor logo dimensions are fixed at 175px wide by 100 px tall. Magazine sizes will be sent to you on production.

We do not include any graphic work done in the deals above although we can do this for you for an additional fee.

We have done E-Magazines in the past and found it has been viewed in excess of 16,000 times. We want to increase that to 20,000.

So there is the new easy deal system we are running on Spotted in Ely. For more information email [email protected] today.

Supergran at 80 years young will

take a dive against dementia

Grandmother Margaret Missin will on June 8th, jump out of a perfectly serviceable aircraft to raise money for research against Dementia.

This Supergran will be jumping on her 80th Birthday.

Dementia is caused when the brain is damaged by diseases, such as Alzheimer’s or a series of strokes.

Margaret has had to help her husband Brian live day by day for the past 5 years with vascular dementia which is often caused by impaired supply of blood to the brain often after a series of mini strokes.

Margaret from Little Downham will be joined by her grandaughter Sophie Adams, also from Little Downham.

Anyone can show their support by helping raise over £5,000 through their JustGiving page set up by granddaughter Catherine. She writes:

My nan and sister are doing a parachute jump on my nan’s 80th birthday on 8th June. Dementia is a horrifying disease that not only effects those suffering but, as I’ve seen first hand, can cripple those left behind….some of the money we raise will go towards helping those who are “left behind” as many of them are elderly people who may have no one else to help or turn too. My nan is desperate to help because she wants to stop others suffering in the same way she and our family have.

Find out more or give generously at https://crowdfunding.justgiving.com/catherine-adams

North London Skydiving Centre will be assisting in the jump which will take place over Block Fen.

Ruby Wax OBE came to Ely Cathedral last night and was immediately in awe of the surroundings and in front of over 750 people

who filled not only the Nave but also the Transepts.

A Mindfulness Guide for the FrazzledThe event was hosted by Topping & Company Bookstore to promote the release of Ruby’s book – “A Mindfulness Guide For The Frazzled”.

The comedic and animated American born but naturalised British Citizen, pursued a career in psychology and retains a masters degree in Mindfulness from Oxford University. Wax also campaigns and lectures on mental health.

She is also a classically trained actress who became popular in the UK for her stereotypical American roles in programs like “Girls on Top” and her appearance in “Absolutely Fabulous” which were both produced by her husband Ed Bye. Her previous book “How do you want me?” hit the Sunday Times Bestseller list.

Quoting Ruby on her new book “A

The Cathedral gets Ruby Waxed

Mindfulness Guide For The Frazzled”

“We are not equipped for this century, it’s too hard, too fast, and too full of fear; we just don’t have the bandwidth. Our brains can’t take so much information in a world where we’re bombarded by bad news and force-fed information. I can just about take in the weather then I’m exhausted. You open a newspaper, everyone’s dead. We’re only supposed to know what our neighbour is up to; if the woman next door to you is having sex with the man next door to her we need to know; but four doors down and it’s none of our business.“

If you would like to find out more about the book go to: http://www.rubywax.net/frazzled.html and for a signed copy head into Topping & Company on the High Street in Ely.

Parking OffencesPCSOs patrolling the vicinity of local schools attended St. Mary’s and St. John’s in Ely, and also Weatheralls School in Soham.

We’re greatful to parents who were so positive towards the PCSOs on duty.

In the full course of the patrol seven £30 penalty notices were issues and three traffic offence reports (TORs) were written.

A ‘TOR’ can result in a 3 point penalty and a £100 fine. The recipient will have to wait for the outcome to arrive through the post.

Our PCSOs will be deployed again tomorrow to other schools in the district and will continue to work their way around the area for the next two weeks.

PCSO Maria Robinson said “The parents, the teachers and the children were all really positive and supported what we were there to do. It’s clear that this is important to people – and it is about keeping the school children safe – so we’re going to keep it up. We don’t actually want to issue penalty notices – we just to improve the situation on the roads.”

The Bypass is still on course for 2017

Cambridgeshire County Council has this afternoon assured Spotted in Ely that the Ely Southern Bypass is on schedule.

The Cambridgeshire County Council are still to submit Business Plan/Study for the construction to the Department of Transport. The original timetable did state the plan would be sent in December 2015.

Any work estimated to be of value of £20 million must be submitted to the DfT so they can assess the work and tender process and overall value caps on spending to complete the project. The Ely Southern Bypass project is estimated to cost in excess of £35 for the 1 mile stretch of road.

Tony Taylorson, PR & Comms for Cambridgeshire County Council told us “I can confirm that we have been having discussions regarding the business case with the DfT but nothing has changed in terms of the timetable. We are still looking to begin work in the late summer of 2016 and the project should be completed by the end of 2017 subject to weather conditions.

The Department of Transport have not been available for a comment at this time until they speak to the person responsible for this project.

Cambridgeshire Police at Ely Station have been listening to the public over growing concern’s about parking in the area.

Yesterday they posted a Facebook status showing vehicles parked near to corners of a road at Witchford Village College and members of the public took to many social media outlets to express their concern which has led to at least 9 tickets being issued today (shown above).

Their post reads:

Responding to public frustrations voiced here and on our Twitter feed, PCSOs have engaged with parking enforcement activity in Ely today.

Every ticket is a £30 fine for the driver.

Offences include: – causing obstructions,– parking in restricted areas,– incorrectly parking in a bay (those drivers who park across two bays or inconsiderately stick out),– parking in a taxi rank, or– parking without a disabled badge.

This activity is going to continue, and it’s an example of what you can expect to see around school premises at pick up and drop off time.

It’s 200 years since The Littleport & Ely Riots of 1816The Field Theatre Group are delighted to announce that they have received a Heritage Lottery grant for activities to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Littleport and Ely Riots.

Following on from the success of our recent community projects, Littleport Festival Fourteen and The Horseman’s Word, residents are invited to participate in a variety of activities.

To get the ball rolling The Field are hosting a series of free history workshops on the following dates.13 & 27 Feb, 12 & 26 March, 9 & 23 April. (2 till 4pm)The sessions will be held at the Adams Heritage Centre, 17 Main St Littleport.

Suitable for all ages. Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult.

There are 6 sessions in total. Session 3 will consist of a guided tour of the ‘riot trail’ and Session 5 will be an excursion to Ely to visit key sites connected with the riots. Free transport will be arranged for this.

These workshop will go towards the

creation of a community documentary ( Riot in the Blood) which will document the riots and the events leading up to them.

The Field will recreate the events, using film, stills photography and a narrative.

We are looking for residents of all ages to participate in this: as technicians and crew, re-enactors or researchers. We are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who is a descendent of any of the convicted rioters, as these links to the present day form an important part of the project.

We will also be leading a procession in June of next year, to lay wreaths on the unmarked grave of the five hanged men from Littleport.

This commemorative procession has been funded by Littleport Parish Council.

There are activities for families too. A series of costumed re-enactment walks combined with a

treasure hunt for younger children will take place around Littleport during May of next year.

Anyone who is interested in taking part please contact.

These are just some of the various commemorative activities planned in Littleport this year.

East Cambridgeshire District Council forms new communications partnership

East Cambridgeshire District Council has formed a new partnership with Spirus to deliver its PR and communications over the next six months.

With the new four year Corporate Plan for East Cambridgeshire at the heart of the council’s strategic vision, and with the contract for PR and communications coming to an end and once again up for tender, a need was identified for an increased level of resource and support to effectively communicate ECDC’s activities and key messages.

Spirus – who will now divide their time between their office in Burwell and the council offices in Ely - was interviewed by Chief Executive, John Hill, and members over a two stage process. ECDC is confident that in their new partner, they have an enthusiastic team that can bring a fresh perspective to the role, as well as an extensive range of additional areas of expertise that can be utilised when required.

John Hill stated: “2016 is set to be a very busy year and we look forward to working with Spirus to communicate the delivery of our priorities and the things that matter to our local communities.”

By actively engaging with local residents, and finding new ways to do so, Spirus will ensure information regarding the council’s progress towards delivering its priorities and making East Cambridgeshire an even better place to live, work and visit (its overriding aim) is disseminated promptly and accurately.

Members of East Cambridgeshire District Council responded to residents’ letters containing questions over the proposed housing development at Barton Road, Ely, at the full Council meeting on Thursday 7th January.

One of the concerns raised was over car parking. Currently, there are 192 public spaces at Barton Road, with an additional 19 that are private and five for coaches. If planning permission is given and work begins, the Council’s aim is to provide an additional 13 public spaces, taking the total number up to 205, meaning there would be more than are currently available for those travelling into the city for work, leisure or visits.

These extra spaces would be gained by removing all long stay coach parking at Barton Road, by reconfiguring car parking allocation around the site – making use of the adjacent depot land – and by releasing land leased to a private company.

To compensate for the loss of coach parking, one safe, short term drop off point (15 minute maximum stay) will be established within Barton Road car park. It is anticipated that those from surrounding villages, along with Kings School, will use this, as it is recognised as a vital drop off point. The two existing drop off points in the Gallery, which again have a 15 minute maximum stay, will continue to be accessible.

In terms of parking provision for coaches, the lay-by on Cambridge Road could be used. Secure sites on the outskirts of the city – recognised as being crucial to the long term success of encouraging travel companies to visit Ely – would also be sought.

The consultation period for this development has been extended to the 22nd January to allow more time for public engagement.

Proposed Barton Road development – Questions answered

Alan Baldwin, Deputy Chief Constable for Cambridgeshire Police Cambridgeshire this week saw a new Deputy Chief Constable take up office for which he says he is keen to deliver for the people of Cambridgeshire by fighting crime, bringing offenders to justice and protecting the most vulnerable.

Formerly with Thames Valley and with the Police both civilian and military since 1987, Alan Baldwin said, “I feel privileged to have this role and am extremely proud to be part of the force. I am keen to build on the great work undertaken to date to deliver the best policing service for the people of Cambridgeshire.

“As ever my focus will be fighting crime and anti-social behaviour, helping victims by bringing offenders to justice and protecting the most vulnerable in society.

“I want to be as visible as I can be and over the coming months will get across the county to meet, listen and talk to as many people as I can to gain a good understanding of the issues we face.

“I have been impressed with the work I have seen in Cambridgeshire already and look forward to us achieving further success in the future.”

We often hear the phrase ‘mental health issues’ in the media. Mental health awareness is increasing, as it should do. The mental illnesses that people – even children - can suffer from vary greatly and affect everyone differently.

Time to Talk is an initiative to raise awareness of mental health issues. This year, Time to Talk takes place on Thursday 4th February. The initiative focuses on starting conversations started around mental health and reducing stigma attached to certain mental health issues. Time to Talk is supported by Mind, Rethink Mental Health and the Department of Health, amongst others. On 4th February, individuals, schools and workplaces across the country will be taking part through social media, blog posts and face to face conversations about mental health.

Having met with constituents who have told me about their personal experiences with mental health difficulties, and in my role on the Education Select Committee, where mental health for young people has also been a topic of discussion, I’m participating in this years’ Time to Talk day. I hope that people across Cambridgeshire can get behind this initiative.

Walkies!! for Arthur Rank & Animal Rescue

Last Sunday, 17th January 30+ dogs took part in a charity walk on behalf Animal Rescue Centre and The Arthur Rank Hospice from Downham Market to the rescue centre in Denver.

Friends and family of Angie, who is currently receiving care from the hospice is why all breeds from Chihuahua’s to St Bernard’s came out for the glorious winter stroll.

Long term Tesco employee, mother and grand-mother Angie from Soham managed to make the start of the event and see them all off despite her illness which inspired all the participants to raise more money than they expected.

Angie is also a prolific fund-raiser herself. Her colleagues and friends recently raised £1000 for Macmillan.

At the end of the 1 hour walk, hot refreshments were on hand to warm those winter chills.

So far they have raised £590 and the total is still growing. You can give to both causes through their JustGiving page.

Carpenters Arms continues support of Soham Scouts

The Carpenter’s Arms have just presented a cheque for £900 to 2nd Soham Scout Group from proceeds of their Sunday meat draw during 2015.

The donation will be used to provide equipment and activities for the young people of the group during 2016.

Mark Clements, pictured far right said:

“On behalf of our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts I would like to say a big thank you to Matt and Alison (Landlord and Landlady) for this very generous donation and to Pat for helping to

sell the draw tickets and to everyone who has brought tickets over the past 12 months you are all very special people.”

Matt and Alison are keen supporters of the local troops. They made a donation last year which enabled the groups to purchase 4 new hiking tents which have been used this weekend at the Fire & Ice camp at Toolmers camp site in Hertfordshire.

This new donation will be used to buy equipment for the younger sections (Beavers and Cubs) which will be discussed at a group committee meeting on Wednesday this week.

Police have released images of the man who they want to question over the fake £50 note story we published earlier this week.

On January 10th at the BP Garage in Soham shortly after 6.30pm, this man filled up his Mini convertible and tried to pay for his fuel using 2 fake £50 notes.

The on the ball staff member was immediately suspicious of the notes, retained the money and called the Police. The man left without leaving any details.

Can you identify this man or his distinctive car? Its a Mini Cooper S Convertible which appears to be silver in colour with 2 black go faster stripes.

Can you identify the £50 Note man?

“Everywhere I look I keep seeing...”
