COVER STORY

In 1994 Mahindra entered the US tractor market with only two products – the 350 & 450 and big ambitions! These two models were simple, rugged, no frills, two wheel drive models with

heavy duty India farming requirements to be tested in the U.S. Indeed, the odds seemed stacked against the Indian tractor major as it was up against some formidable competition from more established players which had been present in the market for over 100 years.

The brand was initially perceived by both dealers and customers as being a “lower quality” foreign made tractor that did not quite have the same quality as the industry majors.

Yet, the little red tractor maker from India soon demonstrated that it was more than a match for the

competition. As Mani Iyer, President, Mahindra USA Inc., says, there were three main reasons for the brand’s ultimate success in the US market. “We first established

Mahindra USA in Texas which has the largest tractor market in the US, including the Southwest and Southeast regions. Our tractors also came with the Mahindra legacy of tough, rugged and reliable products which was largely underestimated by competition. Perhaps the biggest factor in our favour was the reliability & performance reputation we soon gained for selling reliable and dependable workhorses

which performed exceptionally in the field and were rarely returned for repairs. We felt it was critical to establish ourselves as a company that prides itself on delivering a tractor that is simple, provides value and delights our customers based on the price/value proposition.”

Building customer confidence These factors soon translated into a healthy and growing consumer base for the company, which deployed a customer focused strategy.

“We built a solid reputation with the growing segment of the market we refer to as the Rural Lifestyler or Hobby Farmer. These customers are often first time tractor owners who use their tractors for less than 100 hours per year. However, they are price sensitive and require a tractor that is competitively priced, simple and easy to

MUSA epitomises the spirit of Rise and has used Alternative Thinking to grow from a niche player in the very competitive US tractor market into the number 3 player in its segment. The company has a strong management team with a clear vision that would ensure MUSA’s continued growth in the future, thanks to a strong product lineup and a strong and dedicated dealer network.

use. Over the years, we have built a strong reputation with this segment and in the process increased our product offerings, expanded into higher horsepower segments, added Cab, HST, and 4WD offerings, increased our dealer representation to over 400 locations and introduced our own finance company, Mahindra Finance USA (MFUSA) which was critical for our growth. These steps allowed us to expand our offerings across North America into the General Purpose Farm segment, Livestock Producers, Hobby Farmers and Dairy Farmers – where we are steadily growing today,” continues Mani.

Today, MUSA is the No. 3 tractor manufacturer in the USA in the 0 - 80 HP (PTO) category and closed the fiscal year ended March 2013 with record billings and record retail sales, gaining over 2% points and delivering its highest ever market share in the US. The company was also ranked No. 2 in the 2013 North American Equipment Dealers Association (NAEDA) Annual Dealer/Manufacturer Relations Survey for Overall Satisfaction, indicating a high degree of customer satisfaction. NAEDA is the apex dealer association in the USA and Mahindra’s strong ranking has allowed them to surpass John Deere on their home turf, which is an exceptional feat.

Compared to the competition, Mahindra Tractors are heavier in weight, lift, carrying and pulling capacity and are built tough – yet they are simple and easy to operate, with a performance that has earned Mahindra an industry

leading 97% customer satisfaction rating. This is a clear validation of the brand’s positioning - “Push more, Pull more

and Lift more.”Perhaps nobody believes this as

much as Janeth Tomlin, a loyal MUSA repeat customer who has appeared in several of the company’s TV commercials. As she says, “You can lift just about anything with that thing! It has never let me down. My dream was to take care of my own land. Without my Mahindra, I couldn’t have done it.”

For MUSA, the customer truly is King, or Queen in the case of Janeth. Its consumer focused strategy ensured extensive feedback on the company’s products and a robust, aggressive internet campaign which included a user-focussed website. Gradually, as more and more customers and dealers became familiar with the brand and put the tractors through their paces, the ‘low quality’ perception changed to more of a value-priced tractor; however the stigma of a ‘foreign brand’ still existed in certain markets.

The idea of Mahindra USA was conceived in the early 1990s as a part of Mahindra Group’s globalisation journey. The journey from 300 tractors to 10,000 tractors has been achieved with alternative thinking to take on established competition. We identified a niche in the large U.S. market amongst hobby and sundown farmers, competing on cost and efficiency and now Mahindra USA is a recognised player in the U.S. tractor industry.

Offering Value and PerformanceTo tackle this head on, from 2005-06, advertising and promotional efforts began to focus on shifting the customer’s perception of Mahindra as a producer of ‘low priced’ tractors to one that provides ‘value’ and superior performance. This differentiation continues today with MUSA introducing its industry leading 5 year warranty in 2009 and the exclusive Mahindra Max 30-day Guarantee in 2012.

Both these programs aggressively promoted and differentiated Mahindra’s product quality and reliability over the competition and have provided the brand with a new positioning that no other brand has countered.

“Mahindra’s brand perception is transitioning and we are no longer perceived as simply a maker of ‘low priced tractors', as customers today see our brand as offering the “best value” in the market,” says Mani. This was evident in several customer surveys which reflected the fact that Mahindra enjoyed the highest customer satisfaction and customer loyalty ratings in the tractor industry, at 97% and 98%, respectively.

For MUSA, the relationship it shares with its dealers is just as important since they represent the brand in the market. “We see our dealers as partners and have formed a Dealer Advisory Council to obtain feedback every quarter which is fully integrated into our business processes immediately,” says Cleo Franklin, Vice President of Marketing and Strategic Planning. MUSA dealers are a support system for the company which provides them with the tools, products and advertising support to brand their dealerships in the local markets which ultimately drives brand awareness, delivers showroom traffic and translates into increasing retail volumes.

“We were given every possible support on a very personal basis from every one at Mahindra from the

President to those who loaded our orders. Mahindra’s support with information, co/op, encouragement and physical assistance was second to none we had ever experienced in any line or endeavor…I can honestly say we have had total support from Mahindra at every level to satisfy and live up to our reputation and we have 100% customer satisfaction even after having had some trying experiences,” stated Mahindra Dealer, David Davis, Co-Owner, Tractor Pros - St Albans, West Virginia.

Cleo agrees with Dave Davis’s comments which validate the strength of MUSA’s dealership connection amongst their competitors. “Our Dealer Delight strategy is not a slogan, it is part of our DNA and imbedded into the Mahindra culture. This positioning has taken our dealer growth beyond 400 dealer locations – by understanding our dealer requirements intimately - beyond manufacturer and supplier to one of partner. I can truly say with my years of experience with other brands – MUSA has earned a competitive edge in the industry as dealer inquiries to join the Mahindra family continues to grow.”

MUSA’s last three years’ turnaround performance in a continued soft and sensitive US economy is a Rise story in itself. Closing our F-13 in this manner is a milestone for Mahindra USA in which I take extreme pride - as we were able to post record sales and market share in a difficult industry and highly competitive market dominated by major players who are fully entrenched and aggressive. F-13’s performance is a direct return on the investments we have made in the past with the support and direction of our esteemed MUSA Board of Directors, and on behalf of Mahindra USA, I want to thank each of our Board members for their support and unwavering belief in my leadership and our capabilities.

Our investments in the ‘Power of 3’: our employees, partners and brand will continue and I strongly believe F-14 will be an inflection point for MUSA’s path to Rise and become a premier player in North America – taking a strong #3 market position in the 0-80 (PTO) HP segment.

Mani Iyer, President, Mahindra USA

I worked with the Board to chart out the right path for MUSA by framing a Strategy 2015 which paved the way for MUSA to fight the battle for market share. This has helped it to emerge among the top 3 tractor brands in the US, in its chosen segment, with a targeted sales volume of 15,000 by then. I strongly believe MUSA is on its way to achieving this goal. Major initiatives like improving the swiftness of our response to changing customer needs, driving simplicity forward, bringing operations under one roof at Satsuma, the plan to open up our fourth distribution centre in the North, and focused actions for success in Canada, have all helped MUSA reach where it is today.

Growing online presenceThe company has also effectively leveraged social media and the internet to sell its products. “In the course of our research we discovered that 75% of customers use the internet for product comparisons and other information when they decide to purchase a tractor. This led us to completely revamp our website and transform it from an information provider to a sales-facilitation and retail support tool,” says Cleo.

In fact, the MUSA website was redesigned on the basis of nine months of feedback and revised no less than five times to incorporate the waves of feedback received from customers. Unique features included a tractor selector tool for first time buyers and the ‘Tractorpedia’ which provides visitors with extensive information on tractors and tractor technology.

The Mahindra Max was the first ever tractor to be launched via the internet in North America. Taking best practices from India from the successful Digital launch of the Mahindra XUV 500 - this involved a 10-day teaser campaign encompassing YouTube and the MahindraMax.com site which revealed the new tractor piece by piece over a 10-day period to generate buzz around the product.

All these initiatives have resulted in a loyal fan following for the brand amongst Hobby Farmers, no mean feat considering the fact that tractor conversion is traditionally quite difficult. According to Cleo Franklin, there are three main factors which have contributed to the brand’s popularity. These include the dealers’ positive experience with the brand and a high customer satisfaction index of 97%, product quality and robust after-sales service and word of mouth which is the no. 1 brand driver, translating into a greater number of customers becoming advocates for the brand.

Taking the Rise spirit to heartMUSA has also undertaken a comprehensive CSR campaign in the US and Canada to support the communities in which it operates; in keeping with the Rise spirit. According to Cleo “We truly believe that our ability to

When I attended the MUSA National Dealer Meeting in February 2012 in Galveston, Texas, and interacted with the over 700 Dealers and Partners of MUSA, I quickly realized the passion, pride and commitment to become the #3 Brand in North America extended beyond MUSA’s employees.

More importantly, the MUSA ‘extended family’ connected very well to our Rise philosophy. MUSA’s rise over the last couple of years is based on its very high level of customer and dealer connect, an intensified retail focus, innovative brand-building efforts, and the passion and commitment of its people. I am proud to be part of their quest to become a premier player in North America.

Ruzbeh Irani, Chief Executive - International Operations Automotive and Farm Equipment Sectors

partner and execute on this front has been a tremendous differentiator for Mahindra USA in the industry as many say we have taken a leadership position in this arena. Our aim is to connect to the customer and our dealers beyond the tractor sale in ways that positively impact and lift their communities with Mahindra Rise.”

MUSA is the only tractor manufacturer to offer a ‘Women in Agriculture’ scholarship program that recognizes the important role women play in the future of the agricultural industry and awards 4 annual scholarships to deserving recipients. The WIA program is administered in partnership with the National Future Farmers of America (FFA) Organization.

Other initiatives include a partnership with ‘Operation Finally Home’ a non-profit organization that provides custom built – mortgage free homes for wounded veterans, families and widows of fallen military service personnel which is an industry first.

MUSA is also a corporate partner for the Texas Future Farmers of America that is committed to the future of farming in Texas. Corporate sponsorships help raise funds that are redistributed to members in the form of scholarships and other benefits to its members.

TREND WATCH

Mahindra Group On a Roll This column by Darius Lam, Associate Editor, focuses on topical issues.

The Mahindra Group has performed strongly across most of its sectors and businesses during the year ended March 2013, with its Automotive Sector sales growing by 17% last year. Total volumes reached an all-time annual high of 563,373 units compared to 483,164 units sold in the previous year. This is particularly creditable, considering that during the same period India’s passenger vehicle industry grew by just 2%, according to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

The primary reason for this sluggish growth was the drop in GDP growth, which led to an erosion of consumer confidence. In fact, the Indian passenger car market actually declined by 7% during the year, the first such drop in 12 years. Despite these challenges Mahindra has grown its volumes and moved into third place in the Indian market.

The Ssangyong Rexton which debuted in India during October 2012 became the second largest selling premium SUV model in the country soon after its launch. It has also won several prestigious automotive awards, including ‘Premium SUV of the Year’ at the ‘Bloomberg TV- Autocar Awards 2013’.

Some of the other notable achievements included the launch of our new Visual Identity and Word Mark during January 2013, which reflect the Group’s increasingly diverse and global nature. This new identity will play its part in helping us achieve our Group Aspiration, to emerge among the Top 50 most admired global brands within the next decade. This goal was unveiled by our Chairman, Anand Mahindra in Italy last year, just before the launch of the XUV 5OO in Europe.

The Mahindra Group is also being recognized as a Thought Leader, placing 10th in the 'Top 20 Thought Leaders' in India in a study conducted by Nielsen on behalf of the UK-based TLG Group.

Meanwhile, Mahindra Racing, which is playing an important role in building up the Mahindra brand globally, won the Constructors Title in the 125GP class at the prestigious Italian National Motorcycle Racing Championship in 2012. This is the first time that a racing team from Indian has won this title.

We also continued to meet our commitment towards environmental preservation, planting 1.75 million trees and thus adding substantially to India’s green cover during F-2013. This is part of the Group’s ‘Mahindra Hariyali’ initiative which aims to plant one million trees each year to counter climate change and global warming.

All in all, it’s been a great year for the Mahindra Group and F-2014 promises to be an even brighter one for all of us.

The history of MUSA is both memorable, and exciting in terms of the diversity of our experiences. MUSA was born in turmoil –with M&M facing a challenging situation as we extricated ourselves from an aborted agreement. And in 1994, it was to be a “BHAG” (Big Hairy Audacious Goal) aspiration well before the term was ever coined- an attempt to demonstrate our global aspirations by entering the most challenging tractor market in the world. MUSA commenced activities in a small shed, with our first employee, Rip, loading up each tractor on his pickup and wandering around Texas till he managed to sell it. And today, MUSA is a multi location no 3 tractor OEM in the US, with 350 dealers. We have not always had growth, learnt innumerable hard lessons, at times made steady progress and at times lost the plot completely. But through these many years, the Mahindra Tractor brand has steadily crept across the US hinterland, moving our brand recognition from “Mahindra who?” to “Mahindra, yes I know that company well”. And today, led by a dynamic young team, the company is breaking records and making dramatic market share gains every month.

Zhooben Bhiwandiwala, Executive Vice-President & Managing Partner – Mahindra Partners Division, Mahindra & Mahindra Limited

Another important element of MUSA’s CSR initiatives are its community Recovery and Rebuilding Programs that get into high gear during times of natural disasters. The company has played an important role in the Hurricane Katrina Recovery Program, donated tractors to the Haiti earthquake recovery effort, Texas Drought Relief Program, Hurricane Isaac Relief Program and Super storm Sandy Relief Program to name just a few.

MUSA has clearly come a long way from its humble beginnings back in 1994 thanks to the hard work and commitment of its employees. Their vision and passion will ensure that the little red tractor company becomes an increasingly potent force in the US tractor industry.

1962 – 2012: MSSSPL’s Golden Journey Of 50 Years

December 19, 2012, witnessed MUSCO Steel now Mahindra Sanyo Special Steel Pvt. Ltd. (MSSSPL) successfully complete 50 years of operation. Its Golden Jubilee celebrations were held on February 5, 2013, and aimed at

energizing the entire MSSSPL Parivaar The celebrations witnessed a power-packed, three-hour program, attended by MUSCO and MSSSPL Directors,

colleagues from the Systech Sector and senior executives from Sanyo, Mitsui and various suppliers, customers and auditors. Guests were welcomed with the sound of bugles, traditional tilaks and the presentation of flowers by school children.

Hemant Luthra, President, Systech Sector, read out excerpts from Mr. Keshub Mahindra’s speech: “…Most business schools and textbooks that record corporate history will tell you that it is very rare for a company to retain its position of pre-eminence over a length of time and even rarer for them to do so for 50 years…..… Anand and I have been committed to building Musco Steel in a manner consistent with the original vision of creating something that aspires to global competitiveness and best in class……"

This was followed by a video message from Anand Mahindra, in which he said: “……The steel business has, from a very early time, been a vital part of the dreams of the Mahindra Group and

of my family….. There were many lessons I learnt from my association with MSSSPL and my career here….. I learnt that MSSSPL is in an industry where the latest technology is the bhramastra that gives you the competitive edge….

I learned that the people of MSSSPL have always been skilled in collaborating with those who have the knowledge and expertise… initial collaboration with M. Rene Perrin, the inventor of the Perrin process or the current alliance with Sanyo and Mitsui…..and the most important lesson I have learned from MSSSPL is that the driving factor that creates a great business is not the business model, is not the strategy, is not even superior technology. It is the spirit of the people…..

“President Obama made the phrase ‘Yes We Can’ famous during his first presidential campaign. But in MSSSPL, ‘Yes We Can’ has been a way of life, long before that……. It is the ‘Yes We Can’ spirit that has enabled the dreams of our Founders and of my father to come true…. My very best wishes for another 50 glorious years.”

In response, various facets of the company's culture were revealed. He wrapped up by sharing the core values of the company and touched upon the evolving core standard operating practices assimilated from the cultural ethos of Japan and India – MSSSK: Mottainai (too precious to waste), Shraddha, Saburi, Shinrai (trust) and Kaizen (continuous improvement in work & family life).

There was a resonating ‘Yes We Can’ from the audience at the conclusion of the program. Thereafter, a Safety Excellence Centre and New Ring Office were inaugurated by the dignitaries present, which was followed by tree plantation. It was a memorable experience for the close to 1200 people who participated.

The celebrations were interspersed by enjoyable songs and graceful dances by employees and students of the JCMM School. Earlier, a short film was made on MSSSPL’s 50-year journey, with the heroes being employees narrating the story.

It was in 1962 that J. C. Mahindra, the then Controller of Iron & Steel,

understood the important role of steel in the economy of post-Independent India and, together with K. C Mahindra, laid the foundation of India’s 1st alloy steel plant, MUSCO. This was a step towards the creation of a strong, self-reliant & technologically advanced nation.

Right from inception, technology absorption and establishing the market – product – customer triad helped MUSCO scale up to become the reputed brand that it is today.

From 1962 to 1999, MUSCO was ably led by Harish Chandra Mahindra, Chairman and Managing Director, after which Keshub Mahindra took over as Chairman, MUSCO. Anand Mahindra joined the company in 1981 after graduating from Harvard Business School, became Dy. MD and President in 1989 and Vice Chairman in 1991.

During its 50-year journey, MUSCO has faced diverse challenges but has always remained a front

runner. The company has numerous ‘Firsts’ to its credit: the first steel company to get ISO 9001 certification, the first single source supplier to many reputed MNCs, the first to implement SAP ECC 6 in its industry and the first company in the Mahindra Group to be awarded ISO 50001 (for its Energy Management System).

MUSCO serves various sectors of Indian industry and has been a pioneer in developing products for the Auto, Bearings, Railways, Tool & Die, Engineering, Oil & Gas, Mining, Defence and Aerospace industries. The company has also grown as a socially responsible organization, engaging with all stakeholders and catering to their aspirations and needs. A residential colony was built, in which executives and workmen dwell together and their children go to the same school – the JCMM School. Today this school also provides primary education to children from surrounding areas.

Firmly focused on Sustainability,

MUSCO has initiated a number of activities in this sphere, such as reduction in water consumption through rain water harvesting and efforts towards reducing the company’s carbon foot print. The company also works closely with the community towards promoting health and education. These initiatives include helping the Mahila Bachat Gaat to generate additional income for the family, arranging medical camps, spending quality time with senior citizens and helping orphanages.

The Annual Quiz Contest, conducted across the Mahindra Group, is also a MUSCO initiative. It witnesses enthusiastic participation and contestants vie for the coveted Harish Mahindra Memorial Trophy.

Two 2013 highlights include the Nav Chandi Yag Pooja being performed on January 31, 2013 and the milestone of 10,000 trees being planted in F 13.

8th Fireside Chat with C.P. GurnaniThe Fireside Chat series at M&M witnesses a senior GEB member providing a forum for young leaders to engage in discussions on pertinent topics.

C.P. Gurnani (popularly known as CP) – CEO, Mahindra Satyam and

MD, Tech Mahindra – is known to the world as the 'Turnaround CEO' and calls himself the ‘Chief Happiness Officer’. A man who dons many hats, he is a people’s person and a die hard fan of golfing and Govinda!

He was the Guest Speaker at the Fireside Chat held on January 10, 2013, and ensured that it was an interactive and insightful interaction for all those who attended, as well as for those who viewed it over the Group-wide webcast.

A natural leader and motivator, CP truly lives up to his ‘Chief Happiness Officer’ title and said, “In order to be successful today, one needs to have drive, zeal and enthusiasm, and all this is possible only when one is happy!”

He believes in happiness, not just that of his employees, but that of the company’s stakeholders too. “It is this very happiness that is reflected in our ‘Customer First’ attitude and drives our positive energy – a mindset that ensures that we stand tall in the face of extreme adversity,” he says, making a reference to the acquisition of Satyam and the subsequent legal battle. “No acquisition, be it Swaraj, Satyam or Ssanyong has had the perfect playbook – in terms of people, culture and business integration. What stands us in good stead are our RISE pillars that have always helped pave the way.”

Innovation as a concept is very close to CPs heart and is, according to him, a phenomenon that applies equally to individuals, organizations and countries. “At any point in time as an individual, I am either a Worker Bee, an Improver or a Game Changer, depending on how I approach my work. If I choose to be a Game Changer, I will innovate, I will question the status quo, I will take risks, I will challenge conventional thinking – RISE in action. Unless we as individuals innovate and add value to ourselves, we will not add value to our jobs,” he explained.

He added, “From an organizational perspective, we had the Scorpio – which was a Game Changer from the Mahindra Group, with similar success stories from Reliance and Airtel. But how did this happen? The philosophy is the same - challenge conventional thinking!”

“We cannot rest on our laurels… we have to continuously innovate, improve and ask ourselves questions… not just about our own company, but about our country as well. Is India Inc. investing enough to create the ecosystem to encourage the next Nobel Laureate? Are we ready with the next Google or Apple? We as a country and as India Inc. have to cultivate and breed innovation so that it becomes part of the culture, part of our DNA!" he asserted firmly in his closing remarks. "The answer my friend is not blowing in the wind. The answer lies in the tenets of Mahindra RISE."

C P Gurnani, CEO, Mahindra Satyam and MD, Tech Mahindra, with participants.

SPECIAL FEATUREQUALITY FOCUS

A Tete-a-Tete With Anjanikumar ChoudhariME met with Anjanikumar (Anjou) Choudhari, Director, Mahindra Institute of Quality (MIQ), to gain an insight to new initiatives at MIQ, as well as to understand its achievements, future plans and more…

Many congratulations on the exponential progress made by MIQ. Tell us about some of the things you have initiated in the last 3 years. The Mahindra Institute of Quality is just over six years old. It had a slow start but we learnt a great deal in the first three years. These learnings have been applied now. For example, our programs are now shorter and more focused on specific training needs. MIQ has started running programs off-campus, at company locations, which makes it more convenient and economical for our customers. There is much greater use of experienced Indian rather than overseas teachers, which provides a better local business perspective. We now also have a small but very competent and enthusiastic group of young program managers. Training programs have been introduced for service sector businesses – something totally missing earlier. These are some of the changes which have accelerated progress at MIQ. MIQ’s activities, programs and achievements are now also better ‘advertised’ through the intranet and the internet and a well produced annual training brochure and calendar is distributed widely within and outside our Group.

What have been the major achievements in the last 3 years? There have been 8-10 new programs introduced every year and the size of the annual training calendar has increased almost six-fold from 19 programs in 2010 to 112 programs this year. The number of training days has increased from 119 to 412 in these three years and the number of participants has grown five-fold from 575 to over 2700 this year.

Is it true that all participants have to go back and solve real life problems before they are certified? Most of our TQM-related programs require every participant to compulsorily bring along an actual problem his department or work group is facing, duly confirmed by his boss. The participant applies the teachings at MIQ to solve the problem – again the solution being confirmed by the superior – before he or she is certified by MIQ. Program managers at MIQ guide every participant in this. Till date, over 1900 projects have been completed, with certified savings of over Rs. 240 crores and another 600+ projects are currently underway.

How have our Group companies and participants related to the enhanced offerings and quality of training at MIQ?It is very heartening that the CAPS rating for MIQ, given by 400 respondents from our Group companies and from non Mahindra organizations, is 73 – one of the highest in our Group. MIQ also checks individual program feedback and overall feedback on a 5-point scale averages between 4.5 – 4.7. There have been other forms of recognition and appreciation. This year has seen a number of awards being received by MIQ: The National Award for application-oriented training from the Quality Council of India, the Asian Quality Leadership Award for teaching practices and the Golden Peacock National Training Award.

The Mahindra Way has now been widely accepted as the Group’s Business Excellence model. Can you share how this was made possible? The Mahindra Way is now the business excellence model adopted by 23 companies in our Group, 12 of which are from the Service Sector businesses. In its earlier years, there was a lot of resistance to adopting the model. There were a number of reasons. There was no significant training and facilitation in adoption of the model and there was limited interaction between the businesses and MIQ. The process of annual assessments was largely managed by Japanese assessors, who had limited long-term interest in the efficient application of the MQW model and essentially visited a business once a year for one or two days.

In the last three years, over 40 training programs have been conducted to induct company executives into the model and over 1500 executives have attended these programs. In addition, the annual assessments are now conducted by a combination of experienced senior Indian assessors along with their Japanese counterparts, which has made it easier to relate to the Indian context in which our companies operate. Finally, the annual assessments are followed through the year by a series of formal interactions between the company and the MIQ – TMW team. All of this has improved the understanding and the credibility of our Group’s Business Excellence Model.

Where do you see MIQ in the next two years in terms of future growth? MIQ has been largely Western India focused because that is where many of our businesses are located. There is considerable scope to expand operations to the South for the MRV staff, as well as to the growing engineering and automotive sector in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. We also need to further strengthen our offerings in the services sector. There is considerable scope for the use of e-learning so that people can learn from their workplaces.
