Kites Soar Above The Blue Ridge On Labor Day Weekend

Ripples of color rise to the sky as children and adults fly kites this Labor Day weekend.

The 13th annual Mile High Kite & Craft Festival takes place Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 5-6, in the Beech Mountain town meadow. This year marks the first time the festival has spanned two days and craft vendors have been added.

Each day the fest iva l has a public area for open kite flying and space for demonstrations by kite club members. Because Beech Mountain sits at more than 5,000 feet in elevation, the kites soar to heights exceeding one mile above sea level and kite-flying participants receive an official certificate from Beech Mountain mayor Rick Owen that states, “I flew a kite a mile high on Beech Mountain.”

The children’s fun zone offers an array of games and activities. The

first 150 kids (12 and younger) each day receive a free kite. Kites will also be for sale, and an assortment of food and craft vendors will be present.

Prizes will be awarded Sunday for the biggest kite, smallest kite and best-decorated kite. As an added bonus, a four-pack of tickets will be given away each day to Beech Mountain’s Autumn at Oz celebra-tion, which sells out each October.

The Mi le High Ki te & Craf t Festival is sponsored by the Beech Mountain Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the Richmond Air Force kite club and the Wings Across Carolina Kiting and Okra Society (WACKOS) from Charlotte.

Festival hours are 10am to 4pm each day, and admission is free. Also on Saturday, an all-ages street dance takes place from 7pm to 9pm

Project 543 tells the story of unique spots across North Carolina we hope will become some of your favorite places. Why 543? Because that’s the number of miles from Manteo, on the coast, to Murphy, in the mountains, and is traditionally considered to be the width of our state. The entries in this project are in no particular order, and we’ll add to them each week. Check in often to find inspiration for your next trip, or start planning today at VisitNC.com.

The Tuckasegee runs the entire length of Jackson County and is formed by the junction of Panthertown and Greenland creeks in southeastern Jackson, flowing northwest into Swain County where it enters the Little Tennessee River.

The headwaters in Panthertown Valley contain wild brook trout. This part of the river is catch-and-release waters, artificial lures only. Below Cedar Cliff Lake in central Jackson County, the Tuckasegee is joined by the West Fork. This part of the river is hatchery-supported waters, but it often yields a good number of wild brown and rainbow trout. The section of the river at East Laport, a popular picnic and recreation area on NC 107 above Western Carolina University, produced a 15-pound brown trout that stayed on the record books for several years.

#44Take The Kids On A ‘Mom–Approved’ Rafting Trip

E ver yone can join in the fun on the rapids of the Tuckaseegee River. From May to September, choose to paddle and steer or simply float your way from Sylva, past Western Carolina

University, into the Tuckaseegee community on a guided raf t trip with the whole family. The Class II rapids will keep you moving while also giving you time to slow down in calmer waters. If you travel Harrison Ford’s Ledge you can catch a glimpse of the bus and train used in the wreck scene from The Fugitive. A stop at the swimming hole is the perfect t ime to hop in and cool off in the 70-degree water.

Plethora Of Pumpkins Awaits At Popular Pumpkin Festival

Pumpkins of all sizes – from pet i te to prodigious – are the primary attraction each

au tumn fo r the Yadk in Va l l ey Pumpkin Festival in downtown Elkin.

This year’s 19th annual festival takes place Saturday, Sept. 26, and promises plenty of plump produce.

T h e h i g h l i g h t i s t h e G r e a t Pumpkin Weigh-Off. Sanctioned by the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth association, the weigh-off awards cash prizes for the largest pumpkins - $1,000 for first place, $500 for second, $250 for third and $100 for fourth place.

The 2014 prize pumpkin was a prodigious 1,404 pounds, setting a new state record.

“These pumpkins sit on pallets in the back of a pickup truck and they’re so big they overflow the back of the pickup truck,” says festival organizer Myra Cook of the Yadkin Valley Chamber.

Growers from places like Ohio, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia and both North and South Carolina show up each year prior to the 9am weigh-off in hopes of capturing top honors.

“This is one of the most famous competitions. We’re the first one that takes place every year,” Cook says.

The weigh-off kicks off a full day of fun that lasts until 5pm. Other

highlights include: carnival rides for children, arts and crafts vendors, antique vendors, pumpkin-themed food, drinks and games.

Folks may also purchase a rubber duck or turtle for the Duck & Turtle Regatta race on the Yadkin River.

Of course, there are pumpkins for purchase – a plethora from produce growers across the Piedmont.

Hours for the Yadkin Val ley Pumpkin Festival are 9am to 5pm and there is no charge for admission. The event is sponsored by the Yadkin Valley Chamber.

Five nights a week live music hits the Iron Horse Station and I’m sure you’ll agree it is one of the best music venues ever. Rich full sound in the room created by the nearly 100 year old rafters and rough exposed bricks canceling the annoying echo you usually get in such a wide open room, perfect for the predominantly Southern American music show-cased here! You can enjoy artists and still have a conversation while enjoying diner. Hot Springs is my choice to check out the generation of new storytellers.
