Bernadine Euers was recently quoted in the Daily Telegraph on the 3rd of May 2007. As a key note speaker at the national APOLA conference she pre- sented on keys issues for Lifeguards relating to dealing with aggression and violence on our beaches. The conference was well attended with over 150 professional life- guards who reported that on a regular basis they face incidents of aggression and in some cases violence. They indicated that the ag- gression comes in many forms, ranging from gangs on beaches to dog owners breaching local council by laws. In support of the confer- ence and our Life- guards, CARM Training also provided 2 short workshops on how to safely de-escalate ag- gressive beach goers. These sessions were conducted by Mr Peter Flannery, CARM Train- ing’s Learning and De- velopment Manager. The focus of Bernadine’s presentation was to enlighten lifeguards as to the key reasons for beach goers using ag- gressive behaviour. Euers explored and demonstrated the power of persuasion and tactical communi- cation vs the use of di- rective and coercion communication to achieve your end game. It was commented on by Lifeguards that Ber- nadine really under- stood their environment and through the use of a carefully prepared case study she man- aged to demonstrate the impact and effec- tiveness of tactful and tactical communica- tions in de-escalating aggression. The theme of the confer- ence was “surveillance is the key to prevention”. By observing the de- meanour of some peo- ple from a distance be- fore engaging we can often read and interpret important non verbal signs about the individ- ual, some very subtle, which often go unde- tected and can create consequences for us. Euers said, “The choice now is to consider and explore your options in terms of achieving the outcome you seek”, i.e. what is your end game. To have the ability to know your end game you need to know your powers and your role, put the incident into per- spective, understand the risks and your available resources. As a key note speaker at the national APOLA conference she pre-sented on keys issues for Lifeguards relating to dealing with aggression and violence on our beaches.

The conference was well attended with over 150 professional life-guards who reported that on a regular basis they face incidents of aggression and in some cases violence. They indicated that the ag-gression comes in many forms, ranging from

gangs on beaches to dog owners breaching local council by laws.
