Beech Mountain’s Ski Slope Time Machine WeekendCan dayglo ski clothes melt

snow? Did video kill the radio star? Do girls really just want

to have fun?

All these questions – and more – will be answered during the fourth annual Totally ’80s Retro Ski Weekend at Beech Mountain.

This year’s time warp back the new wave era takes place Feb. 20-22 and includes live music, special guest appearances, retro festivities and 80’s-themed specials on lodging and meals.

Headlining the weekend is The Break-fast Club, America’s favorite 1980s tribute band. The Breakfast Club plays Saturday night in the Beech Tree lodge at Beech Mountain Resort. During intermission, the fun continues with the annual $500 Totally Retro Apparel Contest.

Friday night’s band is Buick MacKane, performing an all-80s set at the Mile High Tavern. Also that night at the

Mile High Tavern is a $200 Madonna look-alike contest.

The Carolina Ghostbusters – complete with their vintage Ectomobile – will make multiple appearances in town and at the ski resort, and they will be joined by a talking replica of the KITT car from the 1980s hit television show, Knight Rider.

Another throwback event is an ’80s lip-sync battle Friday afternoon at Beech Mountain Brewing Co. in the alpine village at the ski resort.

Old school music fans will also have an opportunity to meet Brake Michaels of Charlotte. Brake is one

Just Desserts: Surry Sonker Trail Showcases a Tasty Confection

Nor t h C a ro l i n a ’s ne we s t culinary trail showcases a heritage food passed down

from generation to generation in Surry County.

The Surry Sonker Trail leads visitors to several places that serve sonker – a cobbler-esque dessert unique to the county. Seven trail stops offer this sweet confection on their regular menu. An additional stop is a pottery studio selling sonker baking dishes and sonker cookbooks.

So, what exactly is this authentic Southern delicacy?Sonker is similar to a pot pie or cobbler. It comes about by blending fruit and unshaped dough that is sweetened with sugar, molasses, or other secret ingredi-ents. Sonker is also similar to snowflakes in that no two are exactly alike.

“Everyone has their own recipe,” says Carolyn Carter of the Rockford

General Store, “and I’ve never had a bad one.”

Sonker’s origins in the county date to the early 1800s. A common belief is it was made to stretch the usage of fruit in tough times, or as a way to utilize fruit toward the end of its ripeness.

A lot of places on the trail, including Rockford General Store, feature sonker that is baked; however, Loretta Flack of Roxxi & Lulu’s Bakery in Elkin has a different philosophy. Her grandmother taught her to cook a dumpling-style sonker in a pot on the stove.

“The dumplings sit on top of the fruit,” says Flack. “When you cut into the

SHOP OF THE MONTHFEBRUARY 2015

If you appreciate hot rods that are built with a retro theme then this shop is for you. Owned by Keith & Leslie Sultana, Man Made Legends specializes in Hot Rods from the 20’s and 30’s.When complete, they resemble exactly how hot rodders would have customized them in the 1940’s. “Period Correct” you might say. Shop Manager John Sad said this qualifies Man Made Legends builds to be run in such vintage racing events as “The Race Of Gentleman” in Wildwood NJ as well as “Bonneville”. Man Made Legends was started in 2006. While they will build/restore whatever you want, their specialty will always be the vintage hot rods and specialty race cars. One such race car is currently undergoing a complete restoration at Man Made Legends. A 1976 NASCAR Torino which raced in the 1976 LEMANS. This is only one of two NASCAR race cars ever to run

this prestigious race. Can’t wait to see the finished car. Too cool!

dumplings they are like a biscuit inside – fluffy and soft with the flavor of the fruit.”

Not far from Roxxi & Lulu’s Bakery in Elkin is Heaven’s Scent, a hometown bistro featuring a recipe handed down from Linda Darnell, mother of co-owner Jones Darnell.

“Our sonkers are all baked. They have a crust on top, and no crust on bottom,” says Heaven’s Scent co-owner Jeff Taylor. “We do not use a glaze. The butter itself gives it a bit of a glaze. Most people like our sweet potato sonker. That seems to be everyone’s favorite.”

In addition to Heaven’s Scent, Roxxi & Lulu’s Baker y and Rockford General Store, there are four other eateries on the trail. They are: The Living Room Coffeehouse in Pilot Mountain, Putters Patio & Grill in Dobson, Trio Restaurant in Mount Airy, and Miss Angel’s Heavenly Pies in Mount Airy.

Another trail stop is Mayberry Pottery in Mount Airy, where visitors can

purchase baking dishes and sonker cookbooks.

The most unusual sonker on the trail belongs to Miss Angel’s Heavenly Pies. Owners

Angela and Randy Shur are natives of Yonkers, NY, and have bestowed a northern flavor on this tasty treat. They utilize a crumb-based crust, and drizzle a moonshine glaze over the crust.

“They tease us for being from the North, so I don’t call it a sonker,” says Angela Shur. “I call it a zonker because when you eat ours with moonshine, you go zonkers.”

The trail was created in early January by the Tourism Partnership of Surry County. It aims to spotlight a heritage food at a time when culinary trails are gaining in popularity.

“People travel now to find good food and this ties in nicely,” says Jessica Roberts of the tourism partnership.

“We have visitors who have picked up the brochure and said, ‘Oh wow, that reminds me of what my grandmother baked,’ or ‘That reminds me of what my mother made for me when I was growing up.’ We’re getting a lot of good feedback from the trail already.”

A brochure map has been created by the Tourism Partnership of Surry County to guide folks along the trail. It includes all the key info to enjoy a day or two along the trail.

The brochure map is available at no charge by calling (800) 948-0949, or by requesting a map online at: www.SonkerTrail.org.

Project 543 tells the story of unique spots across North Carolina we hope will become some of your favorite places. Why 543? Because that’s the number of miles from Manteo, on the coast, to Murphy, in the mountains, and is traditionally considered to be the width of our state. The entries in this project are in no particular order, and we’ll add to them each week. Check in often to find inspiration for your next trip, or start planning today at VisitNC.com.

We are all familiar with the term “farm to fork” by now. But what about “farm to fermenter”? Fonta Flora Brewery in Morganton, North Carolina in my humble opinion does farm to fermentor better than

any brewery in the country. Head brewer Todd Boera not only utilizes local farmers and business to provide ingredients for his crafty creations, I’ll have you know that Todd will forage the foothills and forests to find favorable flora for his fermentors.

Ingredients like ramps, dandelions, figs have been foraged for in the wild while local crops like plums, kiwi, sweet potato, carrots, beets, rye grass, alfalfa , clover hay, sunflowers and fennel come directly from the farm. Yes, kiwi!

Todd along with David and Mark Bennett, the three principles in Fonta Flora will be celebrating the opening of the newly renovated brewery with a release of several variations of Urban Monk Imperial Stout. Also, Vestige Bloom: Appalachian Wild Ale: Kiwi Funk and Vestige Wither: Appalachian Wild Ale: Fennel Funk will also make their debut on February 7th.

The Urban Monk imperial stout is now aging on heaps of Defiant Whisky oak soaked spirals, the brewery has a new look for 2015 and David, Mark, Todd and Sarah are making sure all is perfect for your arrival.

Film Junkies Guide to North CarolinaDurham Locations Duke University For information about the university, call 919-684-3214 or visit www.duke.edu. Tours are offered during daylight hours : call for times. Duke Chapel is located on Chapel Drive, West Campus.

Duke University has attained international prominence in fields ranging from medicine

to basketball. It is one of America’s most beautiful universities, espe-cially the castle-like West Campus. Bright Leaf, a Michael Curtiz film star-ring Lauren Bacall and Gary Cooper, is a fictionalized account of a family much like the Dukes, founders of the college. The film shot and premiered in Durham back in the early 1950s. Recently, Duke has gotten maximum exposure as Worthington College, home to roommates Joey (Katie Holmes) and Audrey (Busy Philipps) and epicenter for the “Dawson’s Creek” gang. The gray stone ex-teriors of West Campus appear in the opening shots of the fifth and sixth seasons, and the girls’ dorm room features Duke’s trademark arched windows. Duke even made an appearance in two shows at once when Jack Osbourne had a cameo in a season-six episode. Behind-the-scenes segments from the filming (heavily bleeped, of course) appeared on “The Osbournes.”

The centerpiece of West Campus is the signature Duke Chapel, dedicated in 1935 and one of the most impressive structures on any college campus. The architect of the chapel was Horace

Trumbauer of Philadelphia, and his chief designer was Julian Abele, America’s first black architect of note. The Reverend Billy Graham and Archbishop Desmond Tutu are just two of the noted clergymen who have led services here. The view is most impressive driving up Chapel Drive,

scene of some well-known NCAA Tournament spots featuring Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski as a chauffeur. The chapel is available for weddings, though one ceremony was almost indefinitely delayed for a rather stirring film shoot. It seems that The Handmaid’s Tale’s director, Volker Schlondorff, kept insisting on one more take of a scene shot in front of the chapel—a public hanging featuring Victoria Tennant! All the while, a real life wedding party was slowly coming in.

Most shoots are not as dramatic. A favorite site for filming is the quad between Chapel Circle and Duke Hos-pital. In Getting In, a film most notable for some unknowns named Matthew Perry and Calista Flockhart in the supporting cast, Perkins Library was used as a dorm. The library’s interior appears in The Program in a scene with Coach Winters (James Caan) and star recruit Darnell Jefferson (Omar Epps). Duke’s campus appears in Stonehrook and in I Know What You Did Last Summer, most memorably when the ominous words appear on a fogged locker-room mirror before stunned Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt). The indoor pool was used for a scene

in Billy Bathgate And since Duke is known for excellence in both men’s and women’s basketball, it is ironic that a football movie, The Program, filmed interiors and a few exteriors here. Despite some controversy over Kiss the Girls, Duke is mostly film-friendly, with several commercials, made-for-TV movies, “Good Morning America,” and even the soap opera “One Life to Live” to its credit.

Twelve Bones, Twenty Four Stops. Coincidence? The North Carolina

Barbecue Society has designed a barbecue

trail from Eastern North Carolina to Tennessee. The trail will meander across the state with stops at 24 NCBS Historic Barbecue Pits. These pits were care-fully and selectively chosen by the NCBS board as representatives of the distinctive methods and barbecue cooking styles that have made North Carolina the Barbecue Capital of the World. Each NCBS Historic Barbecue Pit still cooks the old fashioned pit cooked method. And each NCBS Historic Barbecue Pit will proudly display a specially designed emblem depicting old style barbecue cooking that is part of the tradition, heritage and culture that NCBS seeks to preserve.

Criteria for selection to the NCBS His-toric Barbecue Trail included, among other things, that the NCBS Historic Barbecue Pit cook their meat product on pits fueled by wood or charcoal, make their own sauce, that the pit had operated continuously for fifteen or more years, that the end product was a good offering and representative of North Carolina Barbecue and that the pit had earned and enjoyed the high esteem of its community, the barbecue industry and barbecue aficionados. The board decided to only include pits that provide a sit down dining experience for the public and to limit the number of pits on the trail to two per town/city.

The establishment of the NCBS Historic Barbecue Trail will afford v isitors to the Old North State an opportunity to sample North
