There  was   a   kindly   nobleman  whose   wife   had   died   of   an   illness   leaving   the   nobleman   and   his   three

daughters  in  despair.  After  losing  all  his  money  the  family  had  to  move  into  a  peasant's  cottage  and  when  it  came  time  for  the  daughters  to  marry,  the  father  became  even  more  depressed  as  his  daughters  could  not  marry  without  dowries,  money  and  property  given  to  the  new  husband's  family.

One  night  after  the  daughters  had  washed  out  their  clothing  they  hung  their  stockings  over  the  fireplace  to  dry.  That  night  Saint  Nicholas,  knowing  the  despair  of  the  father,  stopped  by  the  nobleman's  house.  Looking  in  the  window  Saint  Nicholas  saw  that  the  family  had  gone  to  bed.  He  also  noticed  the  daughters  stockings.   Inspiration   struck   Saint   Nicholas   and   he   took   three   small   bags   of   gold   from   his   pouch   and  threw  them  one  by  one  down  the  chimney  and  they  landed  in  the  stockings.

The  next  morning  when  the  daughters  awoke  they  found  their  stockings  contained  enough  gold  for  them  to  get  married.  The  nobleman  was  able  to  see  his  three  daughters  marry  and  he  lived  a  long  and  happy  life.  This  is  where  we  received  the  tradition  of  hanging  Christmas  stockings  for  kids.

In  some  countries  children  have  similar  customs,  in  France  the  children  place  their  shoes  by  the  fireplace,  a  tradition  dating  back  to  when  children  wore  wooden  peasant  shoes.    In  Holland  the  children  fill   their  shoes  with   hay   and   a   carrot   for   the   horse   of   Sintirklass.   In  Hungary   children   shine   their   shoes   before  putting   them  near   the  door  or  a  windowsill   and   in  Puerto  Rico  children  put  greens  and   flowers   in  small  boxes  and  place  them  under  their  beds  for  the  camels  of  the  Three  Kings.

MY  DADDY  ATE  AN  APPLE    So  what  happens  if  you  eat  an  apple  with  a  green  worm  inside?  Not  just  any  worm,  of  course,  but  a  fuzzy  one,   a   buzzy   one,   a   great   big   fat   juicy  one!  Children  will   love   this   story   about   Daddy   Zebra's  trip  to  hospital  -‐  and  the  surprise  ending!

STOMP  BY  RUTH  PAUL    A  dinosaur  follow-‐the-‐leader  story!  Follow  these  colourful   dinosaurs   as   they   HOP,   STOMP   and  ROAR   their   way   through   the   pages   of   this  beautifully   illustrated   book.   On   the   outward  journey   the   largest   dinosaur   leads,   until   they  can   go   no   further   ...then   on   the  way   back,   it's  baby  dinosaur  who  gets  to  lead.

THE  GREAT  BIRD  POO  WAR    When   a   bird   flying   above   plops   on   Little  Pukeko's   head,   he   declares   war   -‐   the  ground-‐dwelling   birds   against   the   flying  birds.   The   plovers,   the   parakeets,   the  cockatoos,  the  cuckoos,  the  blackbirds  and  the   bluebirds   -‐   and  many   others   -‐   join   in,  and  soon  every  bird  is  covered  in  slop!

advice  from  midwife  &  author  of  oh  baby  and  oh  grow  up  -‐  Kathy  Fray

WIN  ME

Research  shows  that  children  immersed  in  conversation  during  the  first  two  years  later  acquire  a  wider

vocabulary  for  the  rest  of  their  lives.

So  yabber,  yabber  and  yabber  away  to  your  little  one.  It’s  like  brain  food.  It  is

brain  food.

So  do  be  chatty!

With  babies,  we  know  we  need  to  show  love,  affection  and

attention.

With  toddlers  we  need  to  show  freedom,  encouragement  and

respect.

But  from  preschoolers  onwards  our  role  gets  more  complex:  we  need  to  teach  giving,  sharing,  truth,  insight,  discrimination,  self  awareness,  responsibility  and  ultimately  independence.

The  main  point  to  realise  with  preteens  is  that  if  you  think  you  don’t  know  what’s  going  on  in  your  kid’s  sex  life,  then  you’re  probably  right  –  and  if  you  think  you  do  know,  then

you’re  probably  wrong.

We  need  to  tell  our  preteens  that  no  question  is  off  limits.

This   months  Mini   Me   Star   is   LILLIE,   she   is   16   weeks   and   loves   splashing   in   the   bath,   Mummies  boobies  and  her  fur  pet  friends!    1.  What’s   Santa   brining   Me?   Highchair   from   Mocka,   Solvej   swing   from   nature   baby,   YmamaY  Admiralty  bay  dress..  Big  Bay  Bib....  Leopard  leggings  &  a  Jolly  Jumper  from  baby  on  the  move.    2.  Why  did  you  choose  to  be  with  my  Daddy?  Because  of  his  caring,  loving  and  nurturing  nature.  He  doesn't  judge  people  and  takes  them  for  face  value.  He  has  smoking  blue  eyes,  which  you  inherited.    3.  In  what  ways  do  you  think  I'm  like  you?  And  not  like  you?  You  are  like  me  with  your  olive  smooth  skin  &  calm  relaxed  demeanor;  you  also  enjoy  having  animals  around  the  house.  You’re  not  quite  as  good  as  sleeping  as  mummy  but  you  do  enjoy  the  ferry  ride  across  Foveaux  Strait  when  mummy  is  feeling  sick.  Lucky  daddy  is  a  fisherman  and  he  holds  onto  you.

MINI ME star!

This  Months  Mini  Me   Star   is   BROOKLYN,  he   is   10months   amd   loves   learning   to  walk,   baths  &  Daddy  coming  home!    1.  What’s  the  one   thing   that  you  are  most  passionate  about   to  do  with  parenting?  Being  positive  and  happy  around  you  at  all  times.  At  the  moment  Daddy  and  I  are  trying  to  teach  you  that  you  shouldn't  bite,  but  you  can  give  lots  of  kisses.    2.  Why  did  you  choose  to  be  with  my  Daddy?  He  is  an  amazing,  thoughtful  and  caring  man.  Your  Daddy  always  puts  others  first  and  will  help  anyone  at  the  drop  of  a  hat.  That's  what  I  love  about  him.    3.  In  what  ways  do  you  think  I'm  like  you?  And  not  like  you?  You  are  definitely  starting  to  look  more  like  me,  and  when  you  pull  funny  faces  you  look  like  I  did  when  I  did  the  same  faces  as  a  baby.  But  then  you  have  your  crazy,  cheeky  side  as  well.  I  think  that's  more  from  your  Daddy,  but  he  may  beg  to  differ!

As  you  know  I  am  nearing  the  birth  of  my  first  baby  and  one  of   the  things   I  am  most  fearful  of  is  breastfeeding  –  well,  it  is  not  actually  the  breastfeeding  itself,  rather  all  the  HOW’s  -‐  how  often,  how  to,  how  to  hold  him,  and  how  to  express!

One   of   the   tips   I   read  was   to   have   a   hair   tie   on  my  wrist   so   I   knew  which  breast  I  had  last  fed  with  –  I  loved  this  idea,  especially  with  the  onset  of  baby  brain   but   thought   I   could   go   one   better…below   is   my   idea   of   the   perfect  breastfeeding  bracelet!

These   start   from   just   $22.50  and  are  elasticated   so   are  easy   to  pull  on  and  off.

Way   back  when   in   the   days   before   the   internet,   before   emails,  before   texts.     The  days  when  we  used  to  write  letters  on  proper  paper.    Do  you  recall  growing  up  and  having  a  bunch  of  penpals?    Do  you  recall  the  enjoyment  you  got  from  writing  and  receiving   letters?     Jack  &   Lucy  was   inspired   by   childhood  memories   and   the   hope  that  children  today  could  experience  the  fun  of  penning  a  letter  or  a  note  to  friends  and   family,   and   the   joy   of   receiving   a   handwritten   response   in   the   mailbox.     As  families   are   increasingly  becoming   spread  out  across   the  globe,   taking   the   time   to  send  a  little  handwritten  letter,  note  or  card  will  mean  the  world.    It's  so  much  more  personal  than  an  email,  and  something  to  be  cherished.      Take  a   look  at   the  current   range  of   Jack  &  Lucy  stationery   including  sets  of  writing  paper,  notecards  or  postcards  as  well  as  greeting  cards.    Envelopes  and  stickers  are  included   with   most   sets   because   we   all   know   stickers   are   crucial   to   fun   letter  writing.        And   just   in   time  for  Christmas  are  wonderful  gift  sets,  which  include  notepads  and  small  boxes  of  coloured  pencils  too.    Every  order  is  beautifully  packaged  so  you'll  feel  like  you're  opening  a  gift  every  time  you  receive  a  parcel  from  Jack  &  Lucy.    l

big booklovers!

In   1945,   Claire   Randall   is  back   from   the   war   and  reunited  with  her  husband  on  a  second  honeymoon  in  Scotland.   Innocently   she  walks   through   a   stone  circle  in  the  Highlands,  and  finds   herself   in   a   violent  skirmish   taking   place   in  1743.   Suddenly   she   is   a  Sassenach,   an   outlander,  in   a   country   torn   by   war  and   by   clan   feuds.   A  wartime   nurse,   Claire   can  deal   with   the   bloody  wounds   that   face  her.  But  it   is   harder   to   deal   with  the   knowledge   that   she   is  in   Jacobite   Scotland   and  the   carnage  of   Culloden   is  looming.

Bonkers:   My   Life   in   Laughs  by   Jennifer   Saunders   -‐   the  hilarious,   touching   life   story  of   the   iconic   comedian   and  national   treasure   Jennifer  Saunders'   comic   creations  have  brought  joy  to  millions.  From   Comic   Strip   to   Comic  Relief,   from   Bolly-‐swilling  Edina  in  Ab  Fab  to  her  takes  on   Madonna   or   Mamma  Mia,   her   characters   are  household   names.   But   it's  Jennifer   herself   who   has   a  place   in   all   our   hearts.   This  is   her   funny,   moving   and  frankly   bonkers   memoir,  filled   with   laughter,   friends  and   occasional   heartache   -‐  but  never  misery.

An   epic   saga   of   love,  betrayal,   ambition   and  redemption   in   1920s  Australia.   The   four  Latimer  sisters   are   famous  throughout   New   South  Wales  for  their  beauty,  wit  and   ambition.   They   have  always   been   close;   always  happy.   They   thought   this  would   never   change. But  then   they   left   home   to  train   as   nurses,   swapping  the   feather   beds   of   their  father's   townhouse   for   the  spartan   bunks   of   nursing  accomodation.   And   now,  as   the   Depression   casts   its  shadow   across   Australia,  they   must   confront   their  own  secret  desires.

The Myths and a Safer Option  There   are   enough   changes   going   on   in   your   body   during   pregnancy   that   can   make   you   feel   self-‐  conscious   and   unattractive  most   of  which  we   can’t   control   -‐   regrowth   does   not   need   to   be   one   of  them!  Although  there  is  no  evidence  that  suggests  dying  your  hair  while  you  are  pregnant  can  cause  problems  to  your  unborn  child,  some  women  prefer  to  avoid  the  process  altogether.    As  the  owner  of  a  hairsalon  and  a  mother,  I  of  course  know  a  fair  bit  on  this  subject,  and  would  like  to  clear  up  a  few  myths  about  hair  colour  and  introduce  you  to  Chi  Organic  Hair  Colour….        Many   hair   colours   still   contain  Ammonia,   this   is   an   irritant   that   can   damage   hair   and   gives   off   the  strong   smell,     with   your   new   found   smelling   powers   of   a   superhero,   may   make   you   feel   unwell,  especially  during  your  first  trimester  so  always  be  in  a  well  ventilated  area  when  applying.    Chi   Organic   Professional   Hair   Colours   are   the   preferred   choice   for   expectant   and   breast   feeding  mothers.     They   are   derived   from  organic   plant,  mineral   and   herb   extracts,  Metallic   Free,   Ammonia  Free  and  PPD  free  (the  chemical  ingredient  responsible  for  most  allergic  reactions).  Infused  with  non-‐synthetic  Organic  Silk  and  Aloe  Vera,  give  100%  grey  coverage,    brilliant  shine  and  come  in  a  full  colour  range.      Chances  are  this  colour  is  gentler  than  the  body  lotion  you  use.      The   colour   solution   is   not   absorbed   through   the   hair   shaft,   but   your   skin,   so   such   methods   as  highlighting  with  foils/meche/cap  have  zero  contact  with  the  scalp  if  you  are  still  concerned.    We  have  been  working  with  Chi  for  8  years  now  and  have  every  confidence   in  their  ability  and  their  safety,  afterall,  as  hairdressers  we  want  to  be  working  with  as  little  chemical  contact  as  possible  too.    Look  and  feel  great  during  your  pregnancy  with  Chi  Organics  at  Molton  Brown    For  more  info  see  our  website  www.moltonbrownmilford.co.nz  or  call  us  09  4895074

Sometimes  the  madness  of  getting  everything  organised  for  the  Christmas  meal  is  so  all-‐consuming,  it’s  nice  to  have  a  dessert  you  can  literally  just  pull  out  of  the  freezer  and  serve  –  then  sit  back  with  a  bubbly  and  enjoy  it.

This  wonderful  festive  looking  arrangement  can  be  prepared  a  few  days  in  advance,  so  on  the  day  it’s  just  like  plonking  a  tub  of  ice  cream  on  the  table  –  but  a  thousand  times  more  impressive!  You  can  be  as  creative  as  you  like  with  the  decorations  in  the  ice  bowl.  I’ve  used  what  I  think  is  quite  Christmassy,  and  goes  well  with  the  ginger  ice  cream  –  however  if  you  were  serving  a  berry  ice  cream,  for  example,  perhaps  some  lovely  pink  flowers  and  berries  could  be  nice.  The  thicker  you  make  the  bowl,  the  longer  it  will  take  to  freeze  –  but  it  also  means  it’ll  last  longer  on  the  table!  Be  sure  to  pop  a  plate  underneath  the  ice  bowl  when  you  serve  it  to  protect  your  tablecloth.  A  very  merry  Christmas  to  you  all!  x

festive bowl!

I’ve  had  some  dreadful  Caesar  salads  in  my  time  and  I’m  sure  you  have  too  –  overly  creamy  and  rich,  heavily  salted,  made  with  poor-‐quality  ingredients  and  manufactured  dressing.

Done  well,  however,  this  salad  can  be  a  real  delight.  I  think  the  magic  really  lies  in  the  dressing  –  it  makes  such  a  big  difference  using  a  homemade  one.

The  leftover  dressing  can  keep  for  up  to  a  week  in  the  fridge  and  is  wonderful  in  sammies  or  wraps,  with  potato  salad  or  as  a  dip.

If  you’re  pressed  for  time,  you  could  just  use  a  cooked  chook  and  just  scatter  chunks  of    it  on  the  salad.  Serves  4.

chicken caesar salad!

Beer  battered  fish  is  a  delicious  treat,  perfect   in  a  homemade  burger  –  and  it’s  so  simple!

The  key  to  getting  these  burgers  perfect  is  not  overcooking  the  fish  –  I  always  do  a  small   test  piece   first.   If   the  oil   is   too  hot,   the  batter  will   brown  quickly  but  won’t  cook   though   –   raw   batter   is   not   a   good   thing!   Not   hot   enough   and   you’ll   get   a  soggier  piece  of   fish.   Fresh   fish   like   this  deserves   to  be   treated  with   respect,   so   I  recommended  avoiding  the  usual  processed  white  burger  buns  and  choosing  lovely  fresh  bakery  buns  instead  (like  ciabatta  buns  or  wholegrain  rolls)  –  it  makes  a  huge  difference.  Filet  ’o’  fish,  eat  your  heart  out!

cheesecake! Dairy  &  gluten  free  cheesecake  with  chocolate  and  strawberries!    I’m  happy  to  say  that  this  is  as  scrumptious  as  good  as  any  cheesecake  I’ve  made.  It’s  rich  (which  is  why  the  creamy  layer  isn’t  too  thick)  so  don’t  go  nuts  on  the  slice  sizes.  Oh  go  on  then,  if  you  must.  The  base  is  lovely  buttery  cashews,  coconut  and  almond,  bound  with  coconut  oil  (available  in  most  supermarkets  now).      The  filling  uses  good  old  Whittaker’s  chocolate,  coconut  cream  and  dairy-‐free  cream  cheese   –  which   is   available   at   most   health   food   shops   (I   got   mine   from   Harvest  Wholefoods).  There  are  a  few  brands  out  there  –  so  just  use  whatever  you  can  find,  because  the  chocolate  will  take  care  of  the  taste!    Note:  You  can   leave   the  egg  white  out   if   you  are  egg-‐intolerant  –   it’s   just   there   to  make   the   filling   lighter.   If   you’re   OK   with   dairy,   you   can   just   use   normal   cream  cheese,  and  replace  the  coconut  cream  with  1  cup  cream,  whipped.  For  a  sugar-‐free  option,  use  sugar-‐free  chocolate  and  hold  on  the  icing  sugar.
