Don your cloaks, masked defenders, you are needed at the libraries!

We hope that you have had a chance to check out Sengkang Public Library since its opening in March, if you haven’t, fret not! A library built with tweens (10 – 12 years) in mind, Sengkang hosts a slew of tween-centric programmes every month, and May is the month of superhero comics!

Fancy having your own batarang or green lantern corps ring? Be a Superhero lets you create powerful accessories to accompany your transformation into a super hero on page 3. Find out all about comic strips and how to create your very own superhero comic strip in our two-part comic creation workshop What are Comics (Part 1) and Comics Scripting and Writing (Part 2) on pages 5 and 6.

Here’s also your chance to become a superhero for Singapore! Take part in our Storytelling Special: Ahoy Navy! Stories from the Singapore Navy where officers from the navy regale you with stories of bravery and valour at sea! (Page 7). Kelab Membaca Wira Cerdik@CCKPL merupakan kerjasama NLB dan Pre-school Teachers Network Singapore (PTNS).   Kelab membaca ini bertujuan memupuk minat membaca dalam Bahasa Melayu, khususnya dalam kalangan kanak-kanak berumur antara 4 hingga 6 tahun. Ini akan diterapkan melalui aktiviti-aktiviti berasaskan buku. Anggota-anggota kelab akan bertemu pada hari Sabtu ketiga setiap bulan. Jika anda berminat untuk mendaftarkan anak anda sebagai ahli, sila dapatkan borang pendaftaran dari kaunter khidmat pelanggan perpustakaan.

The reading club, Kelab Membaca Wira Cerdik@CCKPL, is a collaboration between NLB and the Pre-school Teachers Network Singapore (PTNS). It aims to foster interest in reading in the Malay language and instilling healthy reading habits among children aged 4 to 6 years. This will be implemented through book-based activities and other activities that are fun. The Reading Club session is held monthly every 3rd Saturday of the month. If you are interested to register your child as a member, please approach the staff at the customer service counter to get your registration form.

Expert Series Workshop:Write Right! Supporting Children’s Writing

Development in Their Preschool Years

Have you ever thought about how to help your child in his writing development? What does it mean to be able to write? Understand the foundations of writing, and participate in experiencing first-hand, some of the challenges and successes your child may face during various writing processes. Learn more about how you can support your child through the writing process. Pick up practical tips on helping him to form letters, create printed words, and construct sentences. As a parent you can nurture a confident and enthusiastic writer in your child through meaningful and fun experiences at home. this programme is brought to you by the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA) and is open to parents who have children aged 6 years and below. Seats are limited and based on a first-come, first-served basis.

The presenter, Jaclyn Smith, M.S. Ed., in Early Childhood Education, is the Assistant Curriculum Manager of Learning Vision, Busy Bees Singapore. Jaclyn has worked with diverse backgrounds of children and families in Singapore and overseas. She has been invited to be a speaker at the Asian Parenting Summit and is a frequent presenter at the ECDA Conference. Jaclyn is also a fervent advocate of promoting positive family-child relationships and an ardent believer of the vital role early childhood professionals play in empowering such relationships.
